Trail Blazers Resume Search For General Manager

The Trail Blazers fell to the Thunder last night to fall four games out of the West's final playoff spot, but the bigger news for the team came off the court. Blazers president Larry Miller said before the game that the team has reopened its search for a general manager, according to Jason Quick of the Oregonian.

It has been nearly a year since Rich Cho was fired, with Portland employing Chad Buchanan as the team's acting GM since then. The Blazers previously interviewed "five or six" candidates, who won't be reconsidered now, according to Miller. The previous interviewees include Dennis Lindsey of the Spurs, Neil Olshey of the Clippers, Troy Weaver of the Thunder, and David Griffin, who has since been hired by the Cavs. Quick adds that Ed Stefanski and Dave Pendergraft may also have been interviewed, though that's unconfirmed (Twitter link).

Miller says the Blazers are looking for a candidate with previous GM experience, and Quick wonders if the team could have its eye on Steve Kerr. Portland pursued Kerr after parting ways with Cho, but the former Suns GM and current TNT analyst preferred to spend time with his family. Quick speculates that perhaps the extended wait to hire a permanent GM suggests that the Blazers are waiting on Kerr.

While the Blazers' search has been resumed, it may not move forward in earnest until after the season, when rival teams allow their current employees to interview for the position.

David Stern On New CBA, Seattle, Replay, NCAA

NBA commissioner David Stern met with reporters in Phoenix before last night's game between the Suns and Spurs, addressing a number of topics. Reports from the Associated Press and Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic relayed some of Stern's more interesting comments, so let's check out the highlights:

  • Stern says we're already starting to witness the positive effects of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement: "As we watch in baseball and we see ten-year contracts and nine-year contracts, ten years for huge amounts… Those players would only get four-year contracts in our sport. We've aligned pay with performance in an important way."
  • The commissioner pointed to the Lakers, Mavericks, and Pacers as a few teams who have already made roster moves with an eye on future tax restrictions.
  • The league is trying to keep its franchises in their current locations, so it would be unwise for the city of Seattle build an arena thinking it would earn them an NBA team, says Stern: "It's a chicken and egg. We don't have any plans to expand and we're working arduously with Sacramento and New Orleans both to keep the teams that are there."
  • The NBA will look into adding goaltending calls to the list of plays that can be reviewed by video replay. Stern wants to ensure the calls are accurate without compromising the flow of the game.
  • Stern was critical of the NCAA's new withdrawal deadline, which has been moved up by about a month and precedes the NBA's deadline, as we outlined here: "If the NCAA would spend a little less time talking about whether players should stay in school for one or two years and enforce their rules equally…. I think the most important thing is to get kids in college the most informed advice they can get without losing their eligibility."

Dominic McGuire Hopes To Re-Sign With Warriors

Dominic McGuire is playing on his fourth team in as many NBA seasons, but he has no desire to join a fifth next year. If it were up to him, he'd return to Golden State for 2012/13, as he tells Marcus Thompson II of the Bay Area News Group.

"Hell yeah," said McGuire when asked if he'd like to remain a Warrior. "Without a doubt. No question about it. I would like to be back here. Hopefully I found a home. We’ll see what happens."

McGuire's season-long numbers (3.0 PPG, 3.7 RPG, .448 FG%) don't look overly inspiring at first glance, but the 6'9" forward has received increased minutes in the last month and has responded on both ends of the floor. In last night's game against the Lakers, the versatile 26-year-old spent time running the offense and defending Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant, and Ramon Sessions, impressing coach Mark Jackson.

"It’s shocking to me that a guy like him was at home waiting for a phone call without a job," said Jackson. "Anybody that wants to win and wants to develop a culture of winning — the phone should have been busy every time you tried to call…. He’s an absolute winner. We are fortunate to have him and hopefully we can keep him around."

McGuire, who signed a one-year, minimum-salary deal with the Warriors in December, will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end.

Jerryd Bayless Out For Season

Raptors guard Jerryd Bayless will miss the rest of the season with a torn left oblique muscle, according to the team. In a tweet, the Toronto Sun's Ryan Wolstat says there's a chance Bayless has played his final game with the team, as Toronto could choose not to tender his $4.16MM qualifying offer, but in the end Bayless will probably be back one more year before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2013.

The Raptors recently signed guards Alan Anderson and Ben Uzoh to 10-day contracts, so their backcourt is secure for now.

In 31 games this season, Bayless has averaged 11.4 PPG and 3.8 APG.

Rockets Sign Courtney Fortson For Rest Of Season

A day after his 10-day contract expired, the Rockets have decided to keep Courtney Fortson for the rest of the season, with a non-guaranteed contract next year, also. According to the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen, this means Fortson can go through the Rockets' offseason program and summer league, and, hopefully, be a part of their training camp.

Fortson was waived by the Clippers after signing a 10-day contract with the team on January 27th. Since signing with Houston on March 18th, Fortson has appeared in five games, posting averages of 2.8 PPG and 0.8 APG.

The Rockets have been in search of backcourt stability since losing Kyle Lowry to a mysterious bacterial infection a few weeks ago. Days after acquiring Derek Fisher at the trade deadline, Houston agreed to a buyout with the former Laker point guard, and yesterday they signed 13-year veteran Earl Boykins to a 10-day contract.

Odds & Ends: James, Gibson, Draft, Stuckey

It's being reported by ESPN.com's Chris Broussard that early on in Miami's 105-90 loss against Indiana last night, LeBron James may have dislocated the ring finger on his left hand. In 41 minutes, James scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds in what was Miami's second straight loss.

Rockets Sign Malcolm Thomas To 10-Day Contract

TUESDAY, 5:25pm: The Rockets made the move official, announcing (via Twitter) that they've signed Thomas to a 10-day contract.

MONDAY, 9:11pm: Los Angeles D-Fenders forward Malcolm Thomas is expected to be called up by the Rockets on Wednesday, reports Yahoo! Sports writer Marc J. Spears (via Twitter). Thomas, 23, saw limited action in three games earlier this season with the Spurs before being released in early February. The rookie out of San Diego State is currently averaging 13.8 PPG and 9.3 RPG in 19 games with the D-Fenders.

Odds & Ends: Draft, McCollum, Chandler, Magic

As we approach the season's final few weeks, some teams will jockey for playoff spots while clubs on the other end of the spectrum jockey for draft position. Henry Abbott of ESPN.com's TrueHoop writes today about the issue of tanking that inevitably arises at this point in the season, and what can be done to avoid it. The piece is highly recommended, and includes a fascinating tidbit on four general mangers on non-playoff teams who reportedly only put in part-time hours.

Southwest Notes: Spurs, Thomas, Hornets

San Antonio finally finalized its signing of Patrick Mills today, and while it's unclear whether the point guard will play in Phoenix tonight, he'll at least be on the Spurs' bench. Here are a few more links on the Southwest leaders and their division rivals:

  • The flurry of midseason roster moves made by the Spurs in recent weeks is unprecedented for the team, says Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News. Manu Ginobli says the acquisitions of Stephen Jackson, Boris Diaw, and Mills show the Spurs are going "all-in" while Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle says San Antonio is "loading up for a run."
  • The Rockets are expected to sign Malcolm Thomas, as we heard last night. According to Mark Berman of FOX 26 Houston (Twitter link), the Rockets will assign Thomas to their D-League affiliate so he can receive more playing time as the team evaluates him.
  • Eric Pincus of HoopsWorld takes an extended look at the Hornets' current situation, with decisions on Eric Gordon and a handful of unrestricted free agents coming this summer.
