Rivers Officially Declares For NBA Draft

Duke guard Austin Rivers has announced his decision to leave school and officially declare for the 2012 NBA draft. Rivers, 19, played one season for the Blue Devils in which he averaged 15.5 PPG and 3.4 RPG with a season-high 29 points coming in a buzzer-beating victory over the University of North Carolina. The consenus ACC rookie of the year will hire an agent and is projected to be one the first players selected in the draft.

"I would like to thank the coaches, my teammates and the fans for helping make this past year at Duke so special," Rivers said in a statement released by the university. "It was a difficult decision to leave Duke, but I am excited about chasing my dream of playing in the NBA."

The son of Celtics head coach Doc Rivers led his squad to a 2-seed in the 2012 NCAA tournament only to lose in the first round to 15-seed Lehigh University.

Western Notes: Brooks, Fortson, Jazz

With a busy Monday chock full of games set to get underway, let's take a look around the Western Conference to catch up on the latest news and happenings.

  • Stefan Swiat of Suns.com says Suns general manager Lance Blanks took a flight to China on Monday to check in on CBA All-Star point guard Aaron Brooks. The former Oregon star has thrived in China as he has led his squad to the CBA Finals thanks to his 21.9 PPG and 4.7 APG. Adding a hot Brooks for the stretch run may be enough for the Suns to clinch a playoff spot with the team currently one game behind the Rockets for the eighth seed.
  • The Rockets are set to sign guard Courtney Fortson for the remainder of the season with a team option for next year, tweets Mark Berman of FOX 26 Houston. Fortson, 23, signed a 10-day contract with the team on March 18th after being cut by the Clippers in late January. The rookie out of Arkansas is currently averaging 2.8 PPG and 1.2 RPG in five games with the Rockets.
  • Lang Greene of HoopsWorld writes many Jazz players are relieved that the trade deadline has passed given the uncertainty surrounding the front office's plans for developing the roster. Since the deadline, the Jazz have won six of their last seven games, putting the team in the playoff mix as the current seventh seed in the Western Conference.

Raptors Sign Anderson To 10-Day Contract

The Raptors have signed guard Alan Anderson to a 10-day contract according to an announcement made by the team today. Anderson, 29, was averaging 21.5 PPG and 4.6 RPG in eight games with the D-League's Canton Charge.

The former Michigan State standout has limited experience in the NBA spread over two seasons with the Bobcats after signing with the team as a free agent prior to the 2005/2006 season. With the Raptors' roster now at 13 players, the team did not need to make a corresponding move upon Anderson's signing.

Minor Moves: Josh Selby

We'll track today's notable international and D-League-related transactions here:

  • The Grizzlies assigned Josh Selby to their D-League affiliate in Reno, the team announced today. Selby, a rookie guard, hadn't seen action for Memphis since the team signed Gilbert Arenas. It's the second time this season he's been assigned to the Bighorns. The Kansas product has averaged 21.5 PPG in four games (31.0 MPG) at Reno, and 2.5 PPG in 23 games (8.8 MPG) for the Grizzlies.

Latest On Lamar Odom

In the midst of a one-point, one-rebound, one-assist performance in last Wednesday's game against the Lakers, Lamar Odom was booed by the hometown crowd in Dallas. He told reporters today that hearing those boos was "a little confusing and little hurtful," as Jeff Caplan of ESPN Dallas writes.

"I admitted I was out of shape for different reasons when I came into camp. I admitted what I had been through," Odom said. "I was honest about how my summer went, how I almost left the game with everything I went through, and I think people just took it the wrong way, like I had a reason not to be here or if I didn't want to be here…. I think people took that the wrong way and the next thing I know I'm trying to come out of a slump and I check into a game and I'm getting booed. I'm not really used to that."

Odom has been mired in a season-long slump since being traded to Dallas, prompting Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas to write over the weekend that the Mavericks need to cut ties with with the ex-Laker. While a buyout may have made sense at one point, Odom would lose his playoff eligiblity if he was bought out and waived now, so he has little incentive to agree to a pay cut. The Mavs could still simply waive the veteran, eating the guaranteed money left on his contract this year and next. That also seems unlikely though, since the team still hopes he can turn things around.

Owner Mark Cuban has insisted that the Mavs don't care about Odom's point totals or other traditional stats, if he can help them in other ways: "When he comes in, does the lead go up or down?" Cuban said over the weekend. "That’s all I care about." Of course, as MacMahon points out, the team's commitment to Odom makes even less sense given that stance — his plus-minus over the last ten games is minus-67.

There's still time for Odom to regain the form that earned him the Sixth Man of the Year award in Los Angeles a season ago, but it's looking less and less likely to happen this season. At this point, I think it's almost a certainty that Odom won't be a Maverick in 2012/13. Whether or not he finishes the year with the team and earns playoff minutes is the more pressing question.

Draft Updates: Green, Beal, Kabongo, Cunningham

The Associated Press announced its All-America team today (link via ESPN.com), with Thomas Robinson of Kansas leading the way as the only unanimous selection. Kentucky's Anthony Davis, Ohio State's Jared Sullinger, Michigan State's Draymond Green, and Creighton's Doug McDermott rounded out the AP's picks. Three of those players are still alive in the NCAA Final Four, but most prospects with NBA aspirations are looking ahead to the June draft. Here are the latest draft updates:

  • Michigan State's Green has signed with agents Ron Shade and Herb Rudoy, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter). ESPN.com's Chad Ford had the Spartan senior going 28th overall in his first mock draft.
  • Ford also takes a look at how the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight may have affected a number of players' draft stocks (Insider link). Not good news for Harrison Barnes.
  • Like Ford, Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld recaps the weekend action for a few top prospects. He also adds that the Wizards are "enamored with" Bradley Beal.
  • Freshman Myck Kabongo will return to Texas for his sophomore season, tweets Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports.
  • Jared Cunningham of Oregon State will test the draft waters, according to Andy Katz of ESPN.com. Cunningham won't officially declare or hire an agent right away, so he'll have until April 29th to make his decision. For more details on the deadlines facing underclassmen, click here.

Rockets Agree To Sign Earl Boykins

The Rockets and Earl Boykins have agreed to terms on a 10-day contract, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. Houston had a pair of open roster spots, and won't need to make a corresponding move to make room for Boykins.

Boykins, 35, told Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype last month that he was talking to a couple teams and hoped to find a deal soon. The Rockets will be the tenth team Boykins has played for in 13 NBA seasons. Although the 5'5" guard hasn't played in the NBA yet this year, he appeared in 57 games for the Bucks in 2010/11, averaging 7.2 points and 2.5 assists in 15.1 minutes per game.

Playoff Eligibility For Late-Season Additions

With the buyout deadline having passed last Friday night, players can no longer be waived by one team and be playoff-eligible for another. While this rule is fairly straightforward, there are a few wrinkles to it, so let's run through a few scenarios that we've seen this season to explain when a player is and isn't eligible for postseason play:

A player is waived, clears waivers, and is signed by another team before March 23rd at 11:00pm
Eligible for postseason: Yes
Example: Ronny Turiaf. Turiaf was waived by the Nuggets on March 18th and signed with the Heat on March 21st, making him playoff-eligible for Miami.

A player is waived before March 23rd, but clears waivers and is signed by another team after March 23rd.
Eligible for postseason: Yes
Example: Rasual Butler. The Raptors waived Butler on the 23rd, meaning he wouldn't clear waivers until after the deadline. But he will still be eligible for the postseason if a new team signs him.

A player is waived and is signed by another team after March 23rd.
Eligible for postseason: No
Example: No one on a guaranteed contract has been waived since the 23rd, but anyone released between now and season's end won't be eligible for the playoffs with a new team.

A player on a 10-day contract has the deal expire after March 23rd and signs a rest-of-season deal with any team after March 23rd.
Eligible for postseason: Yes
Example: Mike James. James became a free agent on Saturday, when his second 10-day deal with the Bulls expired. However, because his contract wasn't guaranteed for the season, James retains playoff eligiblity if he's signed by the Bulls or another team.

A player signs with a team after March 23rd, having not played for an NBA team yet this season.
Eligible for postseason: Yes
Example: After playing in China, Patrick Mills has returned to America and signed with the Spurs. Because San Antonio is his first NBA team this season, he'll be playoff-eligible, regardless of whether he finalized his contract before or after March 23rd. A player who has been a free agent all year long, such as James Posey or Michael Finley, could also sign now and be playoff-eligible.

Raptors Looking To Add Depth

After trading Leandro Barbosa and waiving Anthony Carter and Rasual Butler, the Raptors are carrying the minimum 12 players on their roster. As Doug Smith of the Toronto Star writes, the team's current roster is getting even thinner — DeMar DeRozan has been ruled out of tonight's game with a left ankle injury, while James Johnson missed today's shootaround with flu-like symptoms. The Raptors' dwindling depth has GM Bryan Colangelo and assistant Ed Stefanski "beating the bushes" in search of reinforcements.

"They’re working on that, different names and different people so they’re prepared for it, we just have to wait and see who’s available," coach Dwane Casey said. "They’ve already got the list and Bryan’s made calls and Ed’s made calls to different people."

Considering the Raptors allowed Carter and Butler to pursue opportunities for contending teams, Toronto is unlikely to be considering veterans. A D-League player, perhaps on a 10-day contract, would be a more likely target for Colangelo.

2013/14 NBA Free Agents

Hoops Rumors’ up-to-date list of 2013/14 free agents is below. These are players who are eligible for restricted or unrestricted free agency after the 2012/13 season. The player’s 2013 age is in parentheses.

Players who appeared in an NBA regular season game in 2012/13 and aren’t currently on a roster are listed, along with a few other notable names. Players on a D-League roster are not listed here, though most D-League players are free to sign with any NBA team.
