2013 NBA Draft

2013 Draft Picks By Team

With the 2013 draft order finalized, rumors have already started swirling about teams potentially trading in or out of the draft, or up or down. That includes the Cavaliers, who hold four picks in the top 33 and are reportedly open to moving their first overall pick.

Besides the Cavs, another three teams – the Hawks, Timberwolves, and Trail Blazers – each hold four picks, while six more clubs hold three picks each. Teams rarely carry more than a couple rookies on their regular season rosters, so it's possible we'll see some action on the trade market on or before June 27th.

Here's the complete list of draft picks by team:

  • 76ers: 11, 35, 42
  • Bobcats: 4
  • Bucks: 15, 43

Odds & Ends: Jackson, Cavs, Love, Lakers

When Mitch Kupchak called Phil Jackson to tell him that he was hiring Mike D'Antoni as coach, he didn't give the Lakers General Manager the most encouraging reaction. "I laughed," Jackson told ESPN's "Mike & Mike in the Morning" show, according to Arash Markazi of ESPNLosAngeles.com. "It was humorous to me when Mitch said that we think that Mike is a better coach for this group of guys."  Here's the latest from around the league..

  • The Cavs have a lot of options at their disposal this summer as they look to get back to the postseason, writes Lang Greene of HoopsWorld.  Cleveland has just over $27MM in guaranteed salaries on the books for next season, but could create more space by dropping the non-guaranteed contracts of C.J. Miles ($2.3MM) and Kevin Jones ($789K).  Veteran forward Marreese Speights also holds a player option of $4.5MM for next season and could opt out to pursue a multi-year deal this summer.
  • More from Greene, who writes that Kevin Love is optimistic about the Timberwolves' future.  “I think Flip is great,” Love said. “I’ve always admired what he’s done, obviously coming from the Timberwolves prior, being with Detroit and having been in the Western and Eastern Conference Finals he’s got quite a reputation."
  • Phil Handy has joined Mike Brown's staff as an assistant coach with Cavs, sources tell Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter).  Handy was a player development coach with the Lakers under Brown.
  • Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports Florida (Sulia link) notes that Jerry Colangelo never believed Mike Krzyzewski wouldn't come back to coach the U.S. Olympic team even though Krzyzewski publicly said he was done.  Colangelo said in an interview back in February that he hadn't heard from Coach K directly that he didn't want to return, which led him to believe that he could lure him back for 2016.
  • Memphis senior D.J. Stephens registered a 46 inch maximum vertical at today's workout in Brooklyn, which may be the highest recorded measurement in NBA history, tweets Matt Kamalsky of DraftExpress.

Lottery Leftovers: Cavs, Mavs, Blazers, Wolves

We gave you the pre-Lottery links and the Lottery results, so with the 2013 NBA Lottery in the books, it's only fair that we round up for you the draft news and notes from around the league:

  • Despite winning the lottery, the Cavaliers will still explore potential trade scenarios for the top selection, tweets ESPN's Brian Windhorst.  The Cavs, who own the first, 19th, 31st and 33rd picks in June's draft, also have cap space and a hunger to win as soon as possible.
  • If the Cavs, or whoever else, don't select Nerlens Noel with the top selection, the former Kentucky center could fall out of the top three, tweets Yahoo's Marc Spears.
  • If not Noel, ESPN's Chad Ford tweets that Otto Porter could be a dark horse candidate to go first overall.  According to Ford, Cleveland loves Porter because he is a perfect fit who is NBA-ready and can therefore help right away.
  • The Mavericks will look to trade the No. 13 pick in an attempt to preserve cap space for a run at Dwight Howard, tweets ESPN's Chad Ford.  Ford adds that the No. 13 pick will make $1,655,300 in 2013/14.
  • With a roster ready to win now and a draft thin on impact talent, look for the Blazers to dangle their No. 10 pick in an attempt to move up or acquire veteran help for Damian Lillard, LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum, writes Chris Haynes of CSN Northwest.  Mike Tokito of the Oregonian agrees, writing that unless the team can acquire a legitimate center to guard the paint, look for Portland to be active in trade talks.
  • The Timberwolves secured the No. 9 pick, which leads Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune, via Twitter, to guess that the team will take the best big man available with their first pick and then take a flyer on a shooting guard with their second first rounder at No. 26.
  • Here is an assortment of mock drafts published immediately following the lottery results: ESPN via Chad Ford, Draft Express via Jonathan Givony, HoopsWorld, and Sheridan Hoops via Joe Kotoch.

NBA Draft Lottery Results

While a consensus number one pick has yet to emerge, we now officially know what team will be tasked with making the draft's first selection; the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Besides the Cavs, who had the third best odds of winning, count the Wizards and the Blazers as winners on Tuesday night.  The Wiz secured the No. 3 selection despite only having a 12.4 percent chance of landing in the top three.  At No. 10, the Blazers retained their lottery selection, which would have gone to the Bobcats had it been outside of the top 12.  Give their odds, the Magic (best odds, will pick second) and the Bobcats (second best odds, will pick fourth) had to have gone home disappointed.

 2013 NBA Draft Lottery Results:

  1. Cleveland Cavaliers
  2. Orlando Magic
  3. Washington Wizards
  4. Charlotte Bobcats
  5. Phoenix Suns
  6. New Orleans Pelicans
  7. Sacramento Kings
  8. Detroit Pistons
  9. Minnesota Timberwolves
  10. Portland Trail Blazers
  11. Philadelphia 76ers
  12. Toronto Raptors (pick to be traded to Thunder)
  13. Dallas Mavericks
  14. Utah Jazz

Lottery Links: Magic, Noel, Thunder, Trades

With less than two hours until the start of the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery, let's round up any and all pre-Lottery notes in one post here.  Be sure to check back with us around 8:00pm CST for an updated list of this year's first 14 picks.

  • With a 25 percent chance at landing the top pick, the Magic sit in the best position entering the night.  While they are assured a top-four selection, the team will likely look to move the pick if it is worse than No. 2, tweets Sam Amico of FOX Sports.
  • Kentucky's Nerlens Noel, current rehabbing from a torn ACL, is widely projected to be the first player taken in June.  USA Today's Sean Highkin breaks down how the unique prospect would fit with each of the lottery's 14 participants.
  • Royce Young from Daily Thunder details what is on the line tonight for the Thunder, who will own the Raptors' first round pick should it fall outside of the top three.  They received the pick in the deal for James Harden (the Rockets got it via the Kyle Lowry deal).  As our Luke Adams wrote earlier today, Toronto only has a 2.6 percent shot at a top-three selection, so the pick will likely go to Oklahoma City.  If so, the Thunder will be picking either 12th or 13th.
  • The only other trade that could take effect tonight depending on how the ping pong balls bounce is owned by the Blazers, who will send their pick to the Bobcats if it lands outside of the top 12.
  • While it's not lottery specific, here is a link to RealGM's summary of all pending future draft picks trades.

Lottery Teams’ Odds To Land Top-Three Pick

The NBA's draft lottery is set to take place tonight, with the league's 14 non-playoff teams vying for a chance at the first overall pick and the opportunity to select a player from a crop of prospects that includes Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore, and others.

The odds at landing the first overall pick are cited frequently, from the Magic's 25% all the way down to the Jazz's 0.5%. But what chance does each team have to land a top-three pick? Listed in the chart below are the odds each lottery team has at the first, second, and third overall picks, as well as each team's overall odds at landing in the top three.

Draft Updates: Saturday Evening

10:45pm: There have been some updates on the second to last day of the Chicago predraft camp, which started on Thursday and ends tomorrow night, as well as other draft-related news, including a few players who hope their names are announced earlier, rather than later, by David Stern in June.

  • Virginia Tech guard and ACC Player of the year, Erick Green, told CSN Washington's J. Michael that he expects to be drafted higher than expected. Despite averaging 25 PPG along with 4 APG and 4 RPG in his last college season, Virginia Tech's awful record kept him off the national radar, and at a smidgen under 6'2" he's undersized for an NBA off guard.
  • One player the Wizards interviewed was Duke's Mason Plumlee, who Green beat out for ACC Player of the Year. When Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer asked Plumlee whether he believes he's a top 10 pick, Plumlee told him: "I feel like athletically and how I played this year, I’ve proven that I am."
  • Another player hoping to be a lottery pick, but who didn't play in a big conference like the ACC, is Lehigh University's C.J. McCollum, who spoke with Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal about his size (he's undersized for an off guard like Green, but can play both guard positions).  Two teams who don't really have a need at guard, in the Cavs and Wizards, both interviewed McCollum.
  • Norvel Pelle is even further off the radar than the others mentioned, but he's a player who Jeremy Woo described at Zagsblog.com as "the most enigmatic player on the court" in Chicago, and he didn't even play in college after failing to qualify academically. Despite some praise from Woo, and one Western Conference scout's take that Pelle "would have to make it via the NBA's D-League," another scout was a bit more harsh with his assessment, saying that the rail-thin 6'11" 20-year-old was "an AAU tragedy who got bad advice. Wasted years of development. Get his passport ready."
  • After watching Bobcats general manager Rich Cho inquire time and again about players in the 10-20 pick range, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer believes the Bobcats might be looking to trade down from wherever they wind up in the draft lottery this Tuesday, May 21st.
  • Josh Robbins writes at the Orlando Sentinel that Magic Senior Vice President Pat Williams, is their good luck charm because his teams have won the draft lottery four different times: once for the Sixers in 1986, and three times for the Magic in 1992, 1993 and 2004.

3:00pm: There isn't on-court action at the Chicago predraft camp this weekend as there was Thursday and Friday, though teams and players remain in town until tomorrow. Several general managers tell Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel that they would prefer the event focus less on putting players through drills and afford them more time for interviews. With ESPN televising the part of the combine with players on the hardwood, I wouldn't expect the GMs to get their wish anytime soon. Here's the latest draft-related news:

  • The league posted measurements and athletic testing results from the combine participants on NBA.com.
  • Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com rounds up his observations from the combine, passing along gloomy opinions on the top talent from a pair of NBA GMs, one of whom says, "There's really no one worthy of the top pick."
  • MLive's David Mayo provides a master list of all the draft prospects whom the Pistons have interviewed either formally or informally, along with the dates of the individual workouts those players have scheduled with the team.
  • Jamaal Franklin attended the combine despite a sprained ankle that kept him out of workouts and drills, and he interviewed with at least nine teams, according to Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union-Tribune. His first workout is scheduled for June 3rd with the Mavs, and the Hawks, Nets, Cavs and Bucks are also "in the mix," Zeigler writes.
  • The Sixers interviewed Rudy Gobert on Friday, reports Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
  • Chris Mannix of SI.com quizzed some of the top prospects with questions they likely heard in their interviews with teams.

Central Notes: Bulls, Pistons, Cavs, Oladipo

The Bulls' season is done, despite gritting out a tough run of injuries–not to mention their season-long absence of 2011 MVP, Derrick Roseto defeat the Nets and advance to the second round. Even with Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, and the aforementioned Rose out, and with Taj Gibson's knee bothering him, the Bulls pushed the Heat a lot more than many expected.

With the Bulls' season over, now is the time to plot for Rose's heralded return (a season later than expected), and decide whether to make a splash this offseason or hold firm and see what this year's tough group can do with a healthy and rested Rose.

  • K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune provides a primer on the state of the Bulls' guaranteed contracts next season, and with $72,044,288 earmarked for just eight players, the Bulls are hoping to find someone like Nate Robinson who can inject some offense without making more than the league minimum.
  • Paul Ladewski at SheridanHoops.com thinks the Bulls should go after Al Jefferson in a sign-and-trade deal with the Jazz and Joe Cowley at the Chicago Sun Times bids adieu to important backcourt producers, Robinson and Marco Belinelli, who will likely sign with other teams this offseason when they become unrestricted free agents. The Bulls are expected to buy out Richard Hamilton's contract this summer, so they'll have a paucity of guards under contract for next season, and Cowley notes that Tom Thibodeau is looking for more outside shooting at the lowest cost they can find.
  • Indiana guard, Victor Oladipo, told Vincent Goodwell at the Detroit News he had his best team interview at the NBA pre draft combine on Friday with the Pistons. The Pistons love his defensive tenacity and motor, and Oladipo says he'd be a good fit for the "defensively oriented" team.
  • Mary Schmitt Boyer of the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote in her mailbag the Cavs shouldn't look to acquire Paul Pierce this summer, but believes the team wants to win now and could be looking to add "significant veteran" to their younger squad using a collection of draft picks and money.
  • In another in a series of pre-draft columns, Mary Schmitt Boyer also looks at the pro prospects of Michigan point guard and NCAA Tournament hero, Trey Burke.

Blazers Eyeing Oladipo, Considering Trading Up?

Assuming there are no major surprises in next Tuesday's draft lottery, the Trail Blazers are expected to have the 10th overall pick in the 2013 draft. By that point, Indiana guard Victor Oladipo will certainly be off the board. According to Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com though, the Blazers are one of a few teams that "really like" Oladipo and are considering trying to move up to get him.

I'd imagine any serious talks about a trade would happen next month, or at least after next week's lottery, considering we don't even know how the top 14 picks will line up yet. If Portland gets lucky on lottery night, the team could end up talking about trading down, rather than up, to draft Oladipo. If the Blazers did end up in a position to take the 21-year-old, he'd be all for it, as he tells Haynes.

"I would really love to go to Portland, and I'm not just saying that," Oladipo said. "I hope, and I don't think I'm dropping that far, but if they decided to move up somehow, I think that would be a great situation for me. It's a place where you can just concentrate on basketball."

In his latest mock draft, ESPN.com's Chad Ford has Oladipo going fourth overall to the Suns, so to have a real shot at landing the young guard, the Blazers would probably have to be picking somewhere in the top five. Portland has three second-round picks it could dangle in a trade offer, though I think it would take a little more than that to land a top-five pick.
