Jazz To Acquire Shelvin Mack

The Jazz are set to acquire Shelvin Mack from the Hawks in exchange for a second round draft pick, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Yahoo Sports tweets. The move is part of a three-team trade involving the Bulls. More details here.

The Jazz are still trying to add a point guard in the wake of their failed talks with the Rockets about Ty Lawson, Marc J. Spears of The Vertical on Yahoo Sports reported earlier today (Twitter link). Marc Stein of ESPN.com added that Mack was one name Utah looked into (on Twitter).

The Hawks re-signed Mack in August 2014 to a three-year deal worth $7.3MM. Mack, 25, is averaging 3.9 points and 1.6 assists per game while making 24 appearances.

Thunder, Nuggets Discuss Randy Foye Trade

The Thunder and Nuggets are in advanced talks on a trade involving Randy Foye, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Yahoo Sports reports (on Twitter). Wojnarowski reported yesterday that Foye’s eminently positive locker room presence appeals to the Nuggets, so it will be interesting to see what it takes to acquire him.

Foye is making $3.135MM on an expiring contract. Foye was said to be available as of mid-December, as Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders reported then. His role has increasingly shrunk with Denver. Foye has also been linked to the Heat.

Clippers, Magic Discuss Channing Frye Trade

11:34pm: The Clippers have yet to commit to any deal on this front, as Wojnarowski hears, and they’re expected to stand pat and sign a D-League big man instead, according to Vertical colleague Marc J. Spears (Twitter links). That gives the Cavs a strong chance to swoop in and nab Frye, Wojnarowski says.

WEDNESDAY, 8:15am: The Magic would move Stephenson elsewhere if they acquire him, sources tell TNT’s David Aldridge. That suggests the team would trade him rather than waive him.

7:37pm: The Clippers are discussing a bigger deal involving Stephenson’s contract, which has placed talks with Orlando temporarily on hold, Wojnarowski reports (Twitter links). Stephenson would be waived if acquired by the Magic, the scribe notes.

7:21pm: The Clippers would send Lance Stephenson, C.J. Wilcox and possibly a second-rounder to Orlando in return, Wojnarowski relays (Twitter links). Los Angeles is also engaged in talks with another team regarding Stephenson, which puts any trade with Orlando on hold temporarily, the Vertical scribe adds. There are also a number of teams interested in Frye, including the Cavaliers, Wojnarowski also notes (Twitter link).

TUESDAY, 7:16pm: The Clippers and Magic are closing in on agreement that would send power forward Channing Frye to Los Angeles, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Yahoo Sports reports (Twitter link). It is unclear who or what would be heading to Orlando in return for the veteran stretch-four.

The Magic have been trying to trade Frye, according to an earlier report from Marc Stein of ESPN.com, who suggested the effort to find a taker for the 32-year-old would accelerate now that the team has traded Tobias Harris, Frye’s cousin, to the Pistons for Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings. Frye is making more than $8.193MM this season, with about $7.8MM coming next season and $7.4MM in 2017/18, the final year of his deal.

The 32-year-old has disappointed since Orlando signed him to a four year deal during the summer of 2014. He has appeared in 44 games this season, including 29 as a starter, and is averaging just 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per night. His career averages are 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.0 assist, and Frye owns a career slash line of .438/.387/.820.

Pistons Offer Anthony To Rockets For Motiejunas

The Pistons have offered center Joel Anthony to the Rockets in exchange for power forward Donatas Motiejunas, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter). The teams discussed this swap on draft night and at that time the talks involved picks as well, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press (Twitter links).

It’s a “lock” that either Terrence Jones or Motiejunas will leave the Rockets as restricted free agents this summer, Zach Lowe of ESPN.com reported earlier this week.

Rockets, Jazz End Talks On Ty Lawson, Trey Burke

10:29am: The talks are over, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Yahoo Sports, who indicates the discussion was only casual anyway (Twitter link). Wojnarowski also casts doubt on the idea the Rockets will waive Lawson.

7:47am: The Rockets would give considerable thought to waiving Lawson if they don’t trade him to Utah, sources tell Marc Stein of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

THURSDAY: 7:01am: The talks are serious, with the Jazz having committed to send Burke away, and the growing sense around the league is that Utah is ready to accept Houston’s offer, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.com (Twitter links). However, Andy Larsen of KSL.com hears the teams are trending in the direction of not getting a deal done (Twitter link).

7:42pm: Utah is looking at deals for several other veteran point guards as well as Lawson, according to Stein.

6:38pm: The Jazz have been interested in acquiring Lawson for a few weeks, tweets Tony Jones of The Salt Lake Tribune. Burke would be headed to Houston in return as part of a proposal the teams are discussing, but his salary is just short of $2.66MM — nearly $10MM less than Lawson — so other players would have to be included to make the deal work, Jones says (Twitter links). Burke is signed through the 2016/17 season, when he will make nearly $3.39MM.

WEDNESDAY, 5:35pm: The Rockets are looking to Utah in their quest to find a taker for point guard Ty Lawson, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Lawson has reportedly been on the market since at least December, while the Jazz have been down a point guard with Dante Exum missing the season after undergoing left knee surgery last summer. A slow market left Houston expecting to hang on to Lawson through the deadline, as USA Today’s Sam Amick reported last month, but it appears the team is making a renewed effort to find a new home for him.

Lawson was expected to add spark to Houston’s offense after being acquired in an offseason deal with the Nuggets. He opened the season as the team’s starting point guard, but proved to be a poor fit and was demoted to the bench after coach Kevin McHale was fired in November. Lawson is averaging just 6.3 points and 3.6 assists in 48 games.

Utah passed on a chance to deal for Lawson last summer, tweets Aaron Falk of The Salt Lake Tribune. He believes any deal made now would have to include more than Lawson. The seventh-year point guard has a salary of more than $12.4MM this season, so it won’t be easy for the Jazz to match without giving up something significant. A combination of Trey Burke and Joe Ingles or Burke and Tibor Pleiss would work, tweets Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders. Lawson is due to make more than $13.2MM next season, but that salary is non-guaranteed.

If a trade goes through, it would be an unusual deal for two teams locked in a tight battle for a playoff spot. The Jazz entered the All-Star break leading the Rockets by half a game for eighth place in the West.

Kings Interested In Iman Shumpert

10:27am: The would-be deal to send Shumpert to Sacramento is losing steam, Jones hears (on Twitter).

8:20am: The Kings would like to trade with the Cavaliers for Iman Shumpert, reports Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee, who indicates that the teams are working off of a proposal that would have Ben McLemore and Kosta Koufos going to Cleveland and Timofey Mozgov joining Shumpert on the Kings. Shumpert was unlikely to be traded as of late Wednesday, as Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal reported, but McLemore and Koufos are reportedly of interest to the Cavs. Cleveland has apparently explored trading Mozgov but met with rejection on that front from Sacramento.

McLemore and Koufos are also part of a deal the Kings are apparently discussing with Chicago involving Pau Gasol. Both Sacramento and Cleveland are working on multiple fronts, and its unclear how much of a priority either side is making the other. The Kings-Cavs proposal would be a money-saver for Cleveland, since Shumpert’s salary of almost $8.989MM and Mozgov’s $4.95MM pay totals about $3.1MM more than the combined salaries of Koufos ($7.7MM) and McLemore (close to $3.157MM).

The Cavs would save many times that amount in projected luxury tax penalties. However, it would be a wash in terms of long-term salary commitments, since Mozgov is the only one on an expiring deal. Shumpert is fresh off signing a four-year, $40MM deal in the offseason, at about the same time Koufos landed a four-year, $32.879MM contract with Sacramento. McLemore is in year three of a four-year rookie scale contract and the Kings are reportedly “desperate” to find him a new home as they work with his camp to find a trade partner.

Andrew Nicholson’s Camp Pushing Magic For Trade

Andrew Nicholson camp is pushing for the Magic to trade him to a team that would give him more playing time, and the Magic are believed to be making him and Shabazz Napier available, reports Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders. Nicholson, whose minutes have dried up the past few weeks, is making almost $2.381MM in the final season of his rookie scale contract and is eligible for restricted free agency this summer. Napier is only in year two of his rookie deal, with just more than $1.294MM coming his way this season.

Nicholson is averging 15.3 minutes per game this season, up from last year’s 12.3, but he’s only appeared in five of the Magic’s last 12 games. His 18 minutes in the team’s last game before the All-Star break represented his only double-digit-minute game since January 6th. Still, he’s been as effective as ever when he has played, averaging a career-best 3.6 rebounds per contest and draining 35.2% of his 3-pointers, also a career high.

Napier would figure to have a reduced role on the Magic following Tuesday’s trade for fellow point guard Brandon Jennings. As it is, Napier sees only 12.1 minutes per contest.

Nets Hire Sean Marks As GM

The Nets have hired Sean Marks as their GM, the team announced via press release. Marks leaves his job as Spurs assistant GM. He has a four-year contract with Brooklyn, league sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Yahoo Sports. Brooklyn had apparently been upping its offer in negotiations late Wednesday, after Marks reportedly turned down the job. The Spurs reportedly envisioned him eventually taking a greater role in their organization and wanted him to stay, but Marks instead joins the Nets on trade deadline day.

“After an exhaustive vetting process, we are delighted to have Sean as our general manager,” Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in Brooklyn’s statement. “His experience on the court, in coaching and management gives him a 360 degree view of the job at hand. His background helping to build one of the greatest teams in the NBA gives him an unparalleled frame of reference. And he impressed us all with his vision, his values, his personality and his enthusiasm for the club. The vote to select him from an incredible list of talent was unanimous. We welcome Sean into our Nets family and look forward to his strong leadership and independent thinking as we build our own success story.”

Marks takes the reigns from assistant GM Frank Zanin, who’d been running the front office since the team removed Billy King from the job last month. It’s unclear just how much say Marks will have in Brooklyn’s decision-making today with the 2pm Central time trade deadline only hours away.

“I am very excited to be named the general manager of the Brooklyn Nets, and to become a member of the vibrant and dynamic organization that represents Brooklyn,” Marks said, according to the Nets’ press release. “I would like to thank Nets’ ownership for giving me this opportunity, and I look forward to the challenge of creating a unified culture and building a winning team.”

Prokhorov denied on Wednesday that he’d offered the job to Marks, as had been reported, joking that he’d never heard of him. The owner raised the idea of taking another week to make a hire, casting doubt on the idea that the Nets wanted to have a GM in place before the deadline.

Spurs assistant coach Ettore Messina reportedly has a strong chance to fill the Nets’ head coaching vacancy now that Marks is in Brooklyn, but the Nets apparently planned on making whomever they’d hire as GM only one part of a committee that will choose the next coach. The same committee was in charge of the GM search, with Nuggets assistant GM Arturas Karnisovas reportedly next in line had Marks not agreed to take the job, with Rockets executive Gersson Rosas and former Suns and Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo also among those who had been in the final mix.

Marks, 40, had a 12-year NBA playing career that ended with the 2010/11 season. He joined the Spurs organization the next season, and he’s served them in multiple front office and coaching capacities.

Bucks, Suns Talk Teletovic; Markieff Still On Block

The Bucks and Suns are in talks about a trade that would send Mirza Teletovic to Milwaukee, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.com (ESPN Now link). It’s among multiple conversations Phoenix is having, Stein notes. The Suns continue to shop Markieff Morris and receive interest from the Raptors and others in P.J. Tucker, Stein adds (on Twitter). The effort on the Morris front is in spite of Morris having said Wednesday night that he wants to stay in Phoenix, according to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic.

“Happy where I am now and we’ll see what happens,” Morris said. “It’s a part of the game. I’ve learned that this past two years. A lot of stuff is going to happen that’s not in my control. All I can do is wait to see if I’m here. If I’m not, I had a couple great years here and I loved it. If I am, keep on moving forward and get better.”

Morris and Teletovic both play power forward. Jon Leuer is the only other natural four on the Phoenix roster. Teletovic’s $5.5MM salary is slightly too large for Milwaukee’s $5.2MM trade exception, as Stein points out, so the Bucks would have to send at least $3.6MM in salary to the Suns to faciliate a deal.

The Raptors had interest in Morris, but they’re apparently out of the mix on him. The Suns as of mid-January had reportedly been delaying talks about Teletovic, who’s on a one-year contract, and Tucker until they had a better idea of whether they could make the playoffs, but Phoenix hit the All-Star break 13 games out of a playoff spot.

Sixers ‘Gauging Interest’ in Jahlil Okafor

THURSDAY, 7:06am: The Sixers have listened to offers but they’re not inclined to trade Okafor or Nerlens Noel barring an overwhelming offer, sources tell Marc Stein of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

9:56pm: Philadelphia would insist on receiving a player at a different position of equal talent to Okafor if a trade is to happen, a source told Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

9:25pm: The Heat could be a possible trading partner, Moore writes in a full story, citing a report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that the team expressed interest in Okafor earlier this season. A source tells Moore that coach Brett Brown has encountered difficulty in trying to blend Okafor and Noel, who are both natural back-to-the-basket big men. “I can’t really control what’s going to happen,” Okafor said today about trade rumors. Two sources also told Moore that teams interested in making deals with the Sixers are now contacting Colangelo, rather than GM Sam Hinkie.

8:44pm: The Sixers are “gauging interest” in rookie center Jahlil Okafor before Thursday’s trade deadline, tweets Tom Moore of Calkins Media. Okafor was the third overall pick in last year’s draft, but there have been concerns that he and power forward Nerlens Noel aren’t compatible, and Philadelphia’s frontcourt could get more crowded if 2014 draftee Joel Embiid can overcome a recurring foot injury and play next season.

Okafor has emerged as a top contender for Rookie of the Year honors, averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds in 47 games. But he has experienced a troubled rookie season off the court, getting suspended for two games in December after videos were released showing his involvement in a Boston street fight.

Okafor is on a rookie scale contract and is signed through the 2018/19 season. If the Sixers do move him before the deadline, it will be the most dramatic step yet in the new direction the franchise has taken since Jerry Colangelo joined the front office in early December.
