Eastern Notes: Hornets, Bulls, Knicks, Nets

The Hornets have six players on the roster who will make $12MM or more next year and that leaves the team without much flexibility heading into the offseason, as Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer writes. The franchise has roughly $102MM on the books for the 2017/18 campaign, as we outlined on the team’s Salary Digest page.

Bonnell believes GM Rich Cho needs to find a way to improve the team’s depth. The 2015/16 squad was able to make the playoffs because of a deep rotation, but after losing several contributors to free agency, Charlotte fell in the standings.

Cho will have the No.11 and No. 41 overall picks in this year’s draft as well as two exceptions (the highest mid-level exception—approximately $8.4MM —and the bi-annual exception, which is projected to be around $3.3MM) to work with as he looks to add talent.

  • Donovan Mitchell recently met with the Bulls and Vincent Goodwill of Comcast Sportsnet (Twitter link) hears that the team was impressed with the guard’s workout. Goodwill notes that there is a good chance that Mitchell is off the board by the time Chicago picks at No. 16.
  • Steve Vasturia worked out for the Knicks, Dennis Chambers of Basketball Insiders reports (Twitter link). The 22-year-old shooting guard has plans to work out for the Nets as well.
  • Isaac Hamilton will work out for the Knicks, Ian Begley of ESPN.com relays (ESPN Now link). Begley notes that the UCLA product fits the mold that team President Phil Jackson is looking for and the shooting guard could be an option for the team in the second round. New York owns the No. 44 and No. 58 overall selections in addition to the No.8.

Sixers Looking To Sell/Trade Second-Round Picks

Four of Philly’s league-high five selections are in the second-round and an anonymous executive tells Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the front office will look to sell one of their selections.

Another executive told Pompey that Philadelphia has been in contact with other teams regarding a trade for a couple of its picks. “Their last two second-rounders are in play [for possible trades]. The word is out there,” the second anonymous executive said.

Philadelphia owns the No. 36, No. 39, No. 46 and No. 50 overall picks in addition to the No. 3 overall selections. It’ll be difficult to add that many rookies to a team that will look to improve upon its 2016/17 record, as I discussed in the team’s offseason preview.

The front office is also considering taking a draft-and-stash prospect who would play overseas for at least one season. The team used this vehicle with prospects in the past, such as Dario Saric and Furkan Korkmaz.

Rosters will expand to 17 next season with a pair of two-way contracts being added to each team’s arsenal. It shouldn’t be assumed that the team will use both of those contracts on rookie players. Pompey notes that Alex Poythress, who played six games for Philadelphia near the end of last season, is a candidate to receive one of those two-way deals.

It’ll be tough for Philadelphia to add five rookies to a squad full of young talent, so it’s likely that the team makes some sort of move. Stay tuned to Hoops Rumors for the latest on the Sixers’ situation.

Ford’s Latest: Celtics, Lakers, Sixers, Suns

ESPN’s Chad Ford has updated his mock draft, publishing the sixth version of 2017’s mock on ESPN.com today (Insider link). According to Ford, Markelle Fultz is the top player on the Celtics‘ board, as expected, but he’s not the only player the team is considering. Sources tell Ford that Lonzo Ball, De’Aaron Fox, Josh Jackson, and Jayson Tatum are also on Boston’s radar, though a strong workout and interview with the C’s will likely seal the deal for Fultz.

Here are several more tidbits of note from Ford’s mock:

  • The Lakers are “going out of their way” to downplay the idea that they’ve landed on Lonzo Ball. While that’s partly about controlling the narrative, the team’s front office is also somewhat split on the pick, according to Ford, who says L.A. hasn’t ruled out De’Aaron Fox or Josh Jackson.
  • There’s an ongoing debate between the Sixers front office and coaching staff about which player they should take at No. 3, says Ford. If the team opts for the best player available, that probably means selecting Jackson or Fox, despite the fact that Malik Monk or Dennis Smith Jr. would be a better fit.
  • The Suns are hoping Ball falls to them at No. 4, but will likely end up picking between Josh Jackson, De’Aaron Fox, and Jayson Tatum, per Ford.
  • There’s some talk within the Kings‘ organization about packaging the 5th and 10th overall picks to move up and land Fox, who is viewed as a strong complement to Buddy Hield. However, that would be a steep price to pay, as Ford notes.
  • Although the Mavericks have scouted French point guard Frank Ntilikina more than any other team in the NBA, Ford believes it would be hard for Dallas to pass up Dennis Smith Jr. if he’s available at No. 9.
  • Former Duke sharpshooter Luke Kennard is drawing interest from teams picking as high as No. 8 (Knicks), and is a strong candidate for Detroit at No. 12, since the Pistons will likely target a shooter if they keep the pick.

Eastern Draft Notes: Knicks, Smith, Hornets, Bulls

Former North Carolina State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is in town to work out for the Knicks, according to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com (Twitter link). Marc Berman of The New York Post tweets that the workout will take place tomorrow.

Smith, who was previously said to have a tentative session lined up with New York, has frequently been mentioned as a potential target for the club at No. 8. By that point, top point guards like Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, and De’Aaron Fox will almost certainly be off the board, but Smith may still be available, and the Knicks are in the market for a point guard of the future.

Atlantic Draft Notes: Dorsey, Dozier, Meeks, Dotson

Oregon shooting guard Tyler Dorsey will work out for the Sixers on Wednesday, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Dorsey is considered second-round material by both DraftExpress, which currently rates him 46th overall, and ESPN.com’s Chad Ford, who pegs him at No. 47. Philadelphia owns four second-round picks.

In other draft-related news around the Atlantic Division:

  • South Carolina shooting guard P.J. Dozier was among the prospects worked out by the Raptors on Monday, according to the team’s Twitter feed. Dozier is ranked No. 51 by DraftExpress and No. 56 by Ford. North Carolina center Kennedy Meeks was also present at the workout. Meeks isn’t ranked among DraftExpress’ Top 100 prospects but Ford has him at No. 67. The Raptors have the No. 23 overall pick but don’t own a second-rounder, so this would be a case of doing due diligence or perhaps an indication they’re interested in trading for a second-round pick.
  • Georgia point guard J.J. Frazier will be among the prospects the Raptors will work out on Tuesday, Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders tweets.
  • Damyean Dotson will work out for the Knicks on Tuesday and the Nets on Wednesday, Scotto reports in another tweet. DraftExpress ranks the Houston swingman at No. 64, while Ford has him slightly higher at 58.
  • The Knicks will bring in Meeks on Wednesday, according to Scotto (Twitter link).

De’Aaron Fox Works Out For Kings; Suns Next

Projected high lottery pick De’Aaron Fox worked out for the Kings on Monday and will visit three other teams with a Top 5 pick over the next week, Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com tweets. The University of Kentucky point guard will work out for the Suns, who hold the No. 4 pick, later this week, Howard-Cooper continues. Fox will work out next week for the Sixers, who have the No. 3 pick, and the Lakers, slotted at No. 2, Howard-Cooper adds.

Fox, who averaged 16.7 PPG and 4.6 APG in his lone season with the Wildcats, is ranked No. 5 by DraftExpress and ESPN’s Chad Ford. That’s where the Kings sit on the draft board, and they certainly have a need at the position. The same could be said about the Lakers and Sixers, though most mock drafts predict Los Angeles will go with UCLA point man Lonzo Ball and Philadelphia will target Kansas small forward Josh Jackson.

Fox could improve his stock during his tour and perhaps even get picked at the No. 2 spot. It’s not a lock that the Lakers will draft Ball, according to another tweet from Howard-Cooper. Fox’s maturity and intelligence will blow the Lakers away, Howard-Cooper predicts.

If Fox makes a big impression on the Lakers or Sixers, there may be more mystery and intrigue to the top of the draft than currently projected.

Draft Notes: Lakers, Ball, Artis, Briscoe, D. White

Despite multiple reports suggesting that the Lakers aren’t sold on the idea of using the No. 2 overall pick on Lonzo Ball, NBA executives are skeptical. As Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com writes, several execs told him that they don’t buy those reports, and one suggested that the Lakers may be trying to convince teams they like Josh Jackson in the hopes that someone will trade up to No. 2 for Jackson and allow the Lakers to move down while still landing Ball or De’Aaron Fox.

I’m also skeptical that the Lakers would pass on Ball, though I think the explanation could be simpler than that. While Magic Johnson has said publicly that Ball’s outspoken father LaVar Ball won’t affect the team’s decision at all, it’s possible that the club has some private concerns. In that scenario, it could make sense to leak word of those concerns in the hopes that LaVar, not wanting to alienate the Lakers, will dial back on his public comments a little.

While we wait to see how Ball’s meeting with the Lakers goes this week, let’s round up a few more draft-related items…

  • Pittsburgh wing Jamel Artis has workouts on tap with the Spurs, Clippers, and Mavericks this week, league sources inform Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders (Twitter link). Ian Begley of ESPN.com adds the Knicks to the list of clubs Artis will audition for in the coming days, writing that Artis and UVA’s London Perrantes are scheduled to work out for New York on Friday.
  • Kentucky’s Isaiah Briscoe has a busy pre-draft workout schedule, according to Jessica Camerato of CSNPhilly.com (Twitter link), who says sessions with the Trail Blazers, Pistons, Bulls, and Lakers are still on tap for Briscoe. Camerato also adds the Raptors and Rockets to the list of teams Briscoe has already auditioned for.
  • Camerato also provides workout details for a couple more prospects who visited Philadelphia today, reporting that Derrick White (Colorado) will audition for the Pelicans, Jazz, and Hornets, while Melo Trimble (Maryland) will work out for the Rockets, Trail Blazers, Pelicans, and Knicks (Twitter links).
  • The Kings will work out Duke’s Harry Giles on Tuesday, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com tweets. The 6’11” center, whose lone college season was marred by knee injuries, is ranked No. 12 overall by ESPN’s Chad Ford, though he’s just No. 33 on DraftExpress’ board. Sacramento holds the No. 5, No. 10 and No. 34 picks in the draft.

Sixers Not Ruling Out Trading No. 3 Pick

The Sixers don’t appear to be locked in on a specific player with the No. 3 overall pick in this month’s draft, with president Bryan Colangelo suggesting earlier today that there are “six or seven” players on the team’s radar for that selection. According to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Colangelo also hasn’t ruled out the possibility of trading that pick.

“I think that should we move or if there’s a transaction that comes out that gives us a chance to perhaps increase what impact No. 3 can have in terms of its return, I think we will look at it,” Colangelo said. “There’s some discussions that have been fairly interesting.”

Assuming Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball are the first two players off the board, as expected, there’s no consensus choice for that third overall spot. De’Aaron Fox, Jayson Tatum, Josh Jackson, and Malik Monk are among the candidates to be drafted there, and if the Sixers like several of those players, they could attempt to move back a few spots and still grab one. Moving up in the draft or trading the No. 3 pick in a package for a star are also possibilities, though they’re probably less likely.

Trades for top-five picks have been somewhat rare in recent years, so there’s a good chance the Sixers simply keep and make their selection. Still, given Colangelo’s suggestion that there have been some “interesting” talks regarding the pick, it’s a situation worth monitoring as the draft approaches.

Sixers Notes: Fultz, Ball, Embiid, Simmons, Korkmaz

With the No. 3 pick in this month’s draft, the Sixers aren’t overly likely to have a chance to draft either Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball, but that doesn’t mean the team isn’t doing its due diligence on those top prospects. President of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo told reporters today, including Derek Bodner (Twitter link) that they’ve talked to Fultz’s reps about the possibility of working him out, though it seems like he may only audition for the Celtics.

Meanwhile, Colangelo said the Sixers haven’t yet met with Ball, but would still like to do so, as Jessica Camerato of CSNPhilly.com tweets. With the exception of those two point guards, Philadelphia has workouts lined up for all of this year’s top prospects, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer (Twitter link).

  • According to Colangelo, the Sixers have their eye on six or seven prospects with the No. 3 overall pick (Twitter link via Bodner). In addition to Fultz and Ball, I’d imagine guys like De’Aaron Fox, Jayson Tatum, Josh Jackson, and Malik Monk are under consideration.
  • Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons won’t participate in Summer League play for the Sixers, Colangelo confirmed today (Twitter link via Bodner). Both players are coming off season-ending injuries, so it seems the team will take it slow and look to get them ready for the fall.
  • 2016 first-round pick Furkan Korkmaz, a draft-and-stash prospect, may play for the Sixers in the Summer League, depending on his international commitments (Twitter link via Bodner). For now, Korkmaz is traveling to Philadelphia to visit the Sixers and work out with some of the club’s players, per Pompey (Twitter link). The young shooting guard wants to come stateside for the 2017/18 season, but has a pricey buyout – $2MM, according to David Pick – and the 76ers may want to stash him for a little while longer.
  • Tyler Cavanaugh (George Washington), Derrick White (Colorado), Tahjere McCall (Tennessee State), Isaiah Briscoe (Kentucky), Reggie Upshaw Jr. (Middle Tennessee State), and Melo Trimble (Maryland) worked out today for the Sixers, as Pompey writes for The Inquirer.

Southwest Notes: Mavs, N. Kerr, Ntilikina

A recent Dallas Morning News report has rounded up a number of mock drafts and two common themes prevail as possibilities for the Mavs: Dallas could either draft point guard Frank Ntilikina to ultimately man the franchise’s playmaking duties or take a gamble on Lauri Markkanen, a sharp-shooting forward being likened to Dirk Nowitzki.

In Ntilikina the Mavs could get a potential point guard of the future, one that the team is said to have actively scouted thus far. The guard is being hailed for his perimeter defense, although the rest of the 18-year-old’s game may take time to develop.

Markkanen, in contrast, represents a different course of action for the Mavs. The modern-day stretch four is celebrated for his already impressive ability to shoot the ball and would benefit from the tutelage of Nowitzki.

Other potential Mavs target that come up in the report are Dennis Smith Jr., Jonathan Jeanne and Jonathan Isaac.

  • Nick Kerr will be serving in a video role with the Spurs after this season, Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News confirms. Nick is the son of Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.
  • Vanderbilt center Luke Kornet is expected to work out with the Spurs on Monday, Jabari Young of the San Antonio Express-News tweets. The 7’1″ senior could be a potential second-round target.
  • Consider Frank Ntilikina a safer bet than Dennis Smith Jr., says Matt Mosley of the Dallas Morning News. The scribe also mentions that he would be disappointed if the Mavs drafted Lauri Markkanen, citing the difficulties he could have replacing Dirk Nowitzki.
  • Another Dallas Morning News report takes a good, long look at Frank Ntilikina, collecting analysis published around the web. There’s an element of risk at play if the Mavs draft him, Dallas Morning News reporter Eddie Sefko says.
