Latest On Allegations Against Luke Walton

Facing a lawsuit which alleges that he sexual assaulted former Spectrum SportsNet reporter Kelli Tennant, Kings head coach Luke Walton has retained the services of attorney Mark Baute, who issued a statement on Monday night in strong support of his client.

“Luke Walton retained me to defend him against these baseless allegations,” Baute said, per Sam Amick of The Athletic. “The accuser is an opportunist, not a victim, and her claim is not credible. We intend to prove this in a courtroom.”

A source tells Amick that Kings general manager Vlade Divac had no previous knowledge of the accusations against Walton until Monday’s report surfaced. The Kings appear to be just as stunned by the news as everyone else, according to Amick, who adds that it’s too early in the fact-finding process to determine whether the team might explore the possibility of terminating Walton’s new four-year contract.

Here are a few more notes on the Walton situation:

  • Tania Ganguli of The Los Angeles Times passes along several details of the lawsuit, which alleges that Tennant “was afraid she was about to be raped” during the alleged incident at the Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica. While Tennant didn’t make the allegations public until now, she had previously told others about the alleged assault, according to the suit.
  • As Ganguli relays, the lawsuit also discusses a second incident which took place on May 24, 2017, when Tennant spoke at a charity event honoring Walton and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. Tennant alleges that Walton “made lewd noises and looked at her suggestively before hugging her in an unwanted way,” Ganguli writes. The alleged incident was mentioned in the lawsuit to establish a “pattern of mistreatment.”
  • It’s crucial that the Kings are fair and transparent as they investigate the allegations against Walton, writes Marcus Breton of The Sacramento Bee. While it’s an uncomfortable situation for Sacramento, the team would only make things worse by going on the defensive or focusing on protecting its investment in Walton, Breton contends.

Suns Fire Head Coach Igor Kokoskov

APRIL 23, 7:32am: The Suns issued a press release late Monday night confirming that they’ve parted ways with Kokoskov and announcing that the search for the club’s next head coach will begin immediately.

“After extensive evaluation, I determined it is best to move in a different direction with our head coaching position,” Jones said in a statement. “I want to thank Igor for his work this past season and wish him the best with his future endeavors.”

APRIL 22, 11:45pm: The Suns have become the latest NBA team to dismiss their head coach this spring, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who reports (via Twitter) that the club has fired Igor Kokoskov.

Despite a disappointing season in Phoenix, it’s still a somewhat surprising development. After all, it was less than a year ago that the Suns hired Kokoskov, making him the NBA’s first European-born head coach last May after interviewing upwards of 10 candidates. Kokoskov and the club reportedly agreed on a three-year deal at the time.

In his first and only season at the helm in Phoenix, Kokoskov led the Suns to a 19-65 record, which placed the team dead last in the Western Conference and just two games ahead of the NBA-worst Knicks.

A playoff berth in 2018/19 always seemed like a long shot for the franchise, but after signing Trevor Ariza and drafting Deandre Ayton during the 2018 offseason, the Suns had hoped to take some positive steps forward. Instead, the club won fewer than 25 games for the fourth straight year.

The other lottery teams that have fired head coaches so far – the Lakers, Grizzlies, Cavaliers, and Kings – announced their decisions within a couple days of their regular season finales. The Suns delayed their decision, and Wojnarowski tweets that the team had initially planned on bringing Kokoskov back for a second season.

Instead, he becomes the latest victim of the organization’s frequent turnover — Phoenix has employed six head coaches – including interim coaches – since the start of the 2012/13 season, and will now be on the lookout for its seventh.

It’s not clear exactly what prompted the Suns’ change of direction on Kokoskov, but it’s worth noting that the team recently finalized some front office changes, giving James Jones the permanent general manager title and adding Jeff Bower in a top management role. Perhaps the new group wanted to make its own coaching hire, as Kokoskov was Ryan McDonough‘s pick.

As for which candidates the Suns may target now that Kokoskov has been let go, Wojnarowski reports (via Twitter) that the club is interested in Sixers assistant Monty Williams. The Lakers have already met with Williams and plan to conduct a second interview with him.

Kevon Looney Wants To Stay With Warriors

Warriors big man Kevon Looney wants to re-sign with the team this summer, he told Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area.

“I’d love to stay here,” he said. “I like being on this team. I want to be there when Chase Center (the team’s new arena) opens later this year.”

The 6’9” Looney is averaging 9.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG in 22.3 MPG during the opening-round series against the Clippers. He’s had two double-figure games in the series, giving Golden State a lift in the wake of DeMarcus Cousins‘ season-ending injury. During the regular season, Looney averaged 6.3 PPG and 5.2 RPG in 18.5 MPG while appearing in 80 games.

Looney re-signed with the Warriors last summer on a one-year, minimum salary deal. This summer, Golden State holds Looney’s Bird rights, allowing the team to exceed the cap to re-sign him, though Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant will obviously be the top priorities.

If the Warriors re-sign their stars and are wary of going too far into the tax for role players, Looney could get a more lucrative offer from another club, as teammate Andre Iguodala suggested last week.

For his part, head coach Steve Kerr gave Looney a ringing endorsement over the weekend, indicating he hopes the front office can reach a multi-year agreement with the 2015 first-round pick.

“For two years now, he has been a rock for us,” Kerr said. “I want him to be here for a long time. I think everybody in this locker room wants Loon to be rewarded for his effort.”

Luke Walton Sued For Alleged Assault

10:41pm: The Warriors, who employed Walton as an assistant coach before he was hired by the Lakers, say they were unaware of the alleged incident, per a statement passed along by the New York Times’ Marc Stein (Twitter link). “We became aware of the alleged incident and story this evening and are in the process of seeking more information. We’ll have no further comment at this time.”

10:18pm: An ESPN report from Dave McMenamin gives a conflicting timeline, saying the alleged incident happened before Walton was named Lakers coach in April 2016. “No one ever reported it to the team,” a source told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. “And that is not why the team parted ways with him.”

8:39pm: New Kings head coach and former Lakers coach Luke Walton is being sued by a female reporter for an alleged sexual assault in May 2017, according to a TMZ report relayed by Yahoo Sports’ Jack Baer.

Kelli Tennant, a reporter who previously worked for Spectrum Sportsnet LA, claims that Walton assaulted her in a hotel room in Santa Monica while discussing a book she was writing.

The lawsuit reportedly asserts that Walton forcibly kissed Tennant and rubbed his body against her despite pleas to stop.

Tennant claims she did not initially report the alleged assault since she had to continually interact with him because of her job, according to TMZ.

Tennant left Spectrum Sportsnet LA that year. She now works for Amazon Prime, covering the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour, and also has a podcast focusing on women’s issues.

The accusation casts a shadow over Walton and his swift hiring by Sacramento GM Vlade Divac.

The Kings issued a statement, Sam Amick of The Athletic tweets, which states, “We are aware of the report and are gathering additional information. We have no further comment at this time.”

Durant Insists He’s Made No Decision About Free Agency

Kevin Durant continues to maintain, at least publicly, that he has no idea where he will wind up in free agency, which he expressed to Logan Murdock of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Barring an unforeseen change of heart, the Warriors superstar forward will decline his $31.5MM option this season and become an unrestricted free agent once again.

“I don’t know. I never know,” Durant said of his plans. “Nothing. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. … Of course, I think about it, but not like, let me make these [plans], let me go ahead and go through the logistics and the details. I don’t go through details on [stuff] like this.”

Speculation has swirled that if Durant leaves Golden State, he will head to New York City to join either the Knicks or Nets. The Clippers have also been a rumored destination.

Durant, who is averaging 27.0 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 6.8 APG in the first round of the playoffs, surprised a lot of people in 2016 by joining the Warriors. So it’s not out of the question he’ll do something unexpected in free agency again.

While Durant understands his decision will be one of the big stories this summer, he hates the speculation and questions he gets regarding his future.

“That’s a hot topic. But you don’t have to talk about it. And then you don’t have to get mad when I don’t want to talk about it,” he said. “And then you don’t have to get mad when your little brain is roaming around, but you can’t find the correct answers. That’s bad journalism. That’s not doing your job well.”

He also gets annoyed and somewhat amused when he hears how other perceive his actions during a game, especially when the Warriors are struggling.

“‘KD is not smiling right now. Something must be going on about him leaving,'” he said of a typical reaction to his mood. “‘His foot must be out the door. He not smiling on the bench.'”

Lakers Don’t Plan To Replace Magic Johnson

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss has no plans for now to hire a replacement for Magic Johnson, Tania Ganguli and Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times report.

Johnson blindsided the organization by stepping down as president of basketball operations two weeks ago. However, Johnson declared that he’s still playing an active role in organizational decisions.

“I love Jeanie,” Johnson said. “I’ve been talking to her almost every day. I’m trying to help. Listen, I may not be in there physically, but I’m still there.”

Johnson is still expected to help woo free agents this summer as the franchise seeks more star power to help LeBron James bring it back to prominence, according the L.A. Times story.

If the Lakers don’t replace Johnson, the power of GM Rob Pelinka will continue to grow. Pelinka is running the team’s search for a new head coach to replace Luke Walton, who was dismissed after the season. The Lakers have already met with former Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue and Sixers assistant Monty Williams. They’re expected to meet with Heat assistant and Pelinka’s former college teammate, Juwan Howard, on Tuesday.

Tyreke Evans Hasn’t Ruled Out Re-Signing With Pacers

Tyreke Evans will consider re-signing with the Pacers even though this season didn’t meet his expectations, J. Michael of the Indianapolis Star reports.

Evans wasn’t thrilled with his role during the regular season after signing a one-year, $12.4MM contract with Indiana in free agency last summer. The combo guard averaged 10.2 PPG in 20.3 MPG in 68 games while taking an average of 9.6 shots, six fewer per game than he did with the Grizzlies last season. He was also nagged by soreness in right knee.

Evans said he wants to play for a “good team,” and the Pacers certainly fit that criteria. But he’d also like to play a role similar to the one he had in the last two games of the playoffs. He averaged 20 PPG in 24 MPG during Games 3 and 4 of Boston’s first-round sweep of Indiana.

Evans, who turned down offers from the Lakers and Hornets last summer, wants to be able to play through his mistakes and utilize his offensive skill set, according to Michael.

“The playing situation was just a little different,” Evans said. “Not how I expected it to be. I feel like I was forcing a lot when I came in.”

Kyle Guy Will Not Return To Virginia

Virginia point guard Kyle Guy has officially decided to forego his remaining college eligibility and stay in the draft, he announced on his Twitter page.

Guy’s post read, “Saying goodbye twice is not easy.. Charlottesville I just want to say thank you so much. I’ll never forget this. One day I will have the words. I am officially keeping my name in the draft. I know it’s the right step after much prayer and thought with my family.”

Guy averaged 15.4 PPG, 4.5 RPG and 2.1 APG for the national champions as a junior but the finality of his decision is a surprise, considering he’s not ranked among the Top 100 prospects by ESPN’s draft expert Jonathan Givony. His strongest attribute is his perimeter shooting prowess, as he made 42.6% of his 3-point attempts this past season.

The 6’2” Guy did have a strong run in the NCAA Tournament, including a 24-point outing against Texas Tech in the title game. He also had a 25-point, 10-rebound performance against Purdue in the Elite Eight.

Guy announced last week that he would test the draft waters.

Poll: 2019 All-NBA Second Team

In an NBA season packed with incredible individual performances, we’re asking you to decide which 15 players are most deserving of All-NBA recognition.

Last week, we opened voting for the All-NBA First Team, and we now have our answers for which five players you believe deserve spots on that team. Three players – a two-time Most Valuable Player and this season’s top two MVP candidates – were seemingly easy choices, but the final two First Team spots were decided by small margins. Kevin Durant nabbed the second forward slot by just 24 votes, while Nikola Jokic won the center spot by 13 votes.

We’re moving on today to the All-NBA Second Team, so be sure to cast your votes below for the two guards, two forwards, and one center that you believe are most deserving of being named to that squad. Don’t forget that a few players – including Anthony Davis, Karl-Anthony Towns, Ben Simmons, and Jimmy Butler – qualify at two positions.
