JULY 10: Thompson’s five-year, maximum-salary contract is now official, the Warriors announced in a press release.
JULY 1: Wojnarowski provides another update on Thompson’s new contract, tweeting that it includes a 15% trade bonus. Trade bonuses can’t push a player’s salary beyond his max, so Klay wouldn’t receive it in the unlikely event he’s traded this season. That could change down the road.
JUNE 30: The Warriors and Thompson have a “done deal” in place, three sources confirm to Marc Stein of The New York Times (Twitter link). A source tells Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link) that it’s a standard five-year deal with no options and no no-trade clause.
JUNE 29: The Warriors and Thompson plan to reach an agreement on a five-year max deal shortly after free agency begins on Sunday, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.
JUNE 28: The Warriors are planning to offer All-Star guard Klay Thompson a five-year, maximum-salary contract when free agency opens on Sunday, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. According to Wojnarowski, that offer will likely accelerate Thompson’s free agency, as the two sides aren’t expected to take long to reach an agreement.
Reports this week have indicated that Thompson had considered meeting with the Lakers and Clippers if the Warriors didn’t put that five-year offer (worth a projected $189.66MM) on the table right away. However, there has been no indication – even after Thompson tore his ACL – that Golden State was wavering on making that commitment.
According to Wojnarowski, several teams that had Thompson on their wish lists have given up hope on that possibility in recent days, becoming convinced that the sharpshooter will remain in the Bay Area.
An ESPN report this morning suggested that Thompson’s camp might have been using those Los Angeles teams to create leverage to ask the Warriors for a fifth-year player option or a no-trade clause. Stephen Curry didn’t get either of those perks in his own five-year, maximum-salary deal, so Golden State may be reluctant to give them to Thompson. At this point, it’s not clear whether or not Klay’s camp intends to push for either one.
If the Warriors can lock up Thompson, they’ll be halfway to keeping their core intact for the 2019/20 season. The team also reportedly plans to offer a five-year maximum-salary (worth a projected $221MM+) to Kevin Durant.
[UPDATE: Durant has committed to the Nets]
Both Thompson and Durant – who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles – are expected to miss most or all of next season, but would be ready to go for 2020/21.

In other news that everyone has known for like 4 years…
Basically Thompson played the Warriors. He pulled this whole thing if I don’t get the max offer I’ll talk to your two division rivals. He had no intentions of ever talking to them. Granted, he has signed nothing yet but I think we all know he will sign this deal he’d be a fool not to.
wow…facepalm…just wow…
You need to open your eyes son
Is that a post that found its way onto this comment section from like 4 months ago?
And in today’s news water is still wet and the Knicks and Cavs will likely be in the lottery next year.
Do you think anyone in Golden States front office really thought Klay was going to go anywhere? Ahahahahahahah no
So, Thompson is going to make if he signs it a annual salary of $38 million. That is the same amount that LeBron James makes. I’d like to repeat that Thompson will make the same annual salary as LeBron James! Got to love the ridiculous salaries of the end BA.
Except he won’t. Thompson’s max salary in year one is $32.7M.
Thompson is younger and plays better defense. 5 years younger is a much bigger difference in the NBA when you are talking almost 30 to almost 35.
You’re talking about 5 years difference between a guy who didn’t make All NBA and a guy who is the best player this generation (maybe ever) not to mention the fact that Klay wont even play next year… apples to oranges
so what? The original poster said he’d make the same as LeBron, obviously not true.
Reading comprehension. He was talking about the money they make not about their history. Would you invest in a guy the will only go down hill in LeBron or a guy still at his peak in Thompson. Not many players past 35 still at top of their game. None that i can think of.
Well for all we know Klay is on the decline after the injury, will he be the same? Who knows?
I really like Klay a lot… but I still rather pay more to an older LBJ everyday of the week & twice on Sundays!
LeBron defense is nowhere it once was. Players now can drive past him with ease. He is much slower up and down the court. Age catches up to everyone. He will be the Pujols of the NBA very soon.
Who the h are you stupidly rambling on about
Lebron could’ve stayed in Cleveland and received more $$. His choice.
@goldenmisfit It’s not a free and open market where teams can outspend other competitors. The GSW can offer 1 more year than any other team. All other teams can all offer the same if they have cap space. So the salaries between Klay and LBJ has little to do with who’s better and more to do with NBA salary cap limitations and when each player signed and how many years in, etc.
LeBron could have made that much too but he instead chose to change teams 3 times. The NBA salary system rewards tenure. I’m not saying the system is great, but LeBron James is responsible for his own situation.
And look at him now, desperately in need of cash…
Boy Lacob, how are we going to pull this one off? Oh right, we are “light years ahead of” everyone else. Joey Lightyears gets the arena built just in time to generate the cap tax revenue we need. Durant might even decide to stay, once he gets a feel for the new ($$$) arena. Money talks, BS walks.
Only GS fans actually believe an arena can make/break their team. Time Up, Game Over :)
I’ve read they expect 200 million in additional Revenue. That’s why they build these things, that’s why they move across the bay. There’s money over there.
SF is moneying up
Only GS fans actually believe an arena will make/break an NBA team. Times Up/Game Over
If Durant signs a max contract the Warriors will have to move Green.
No, they won’t.
You obviously don’t understand economics or how the hard cap works.
You obviously don’t know that there is no “hard cap” in the NBA.
I sort of wish they had a hard cap. There’s so many ways around is not even funny. You want to exceed the cap you can you’ll just have to pay for it.
Hence, “soft cap”, and with a slider in the back and a little pinwheel on top, the better to change with the wind.
You’re really arrogant….and wrong. The GSW can resign any of their own players to max deals so long as they’re willing to pay the lux tax. They just can’t add OUTSIDE players right now because they are over the cap.
This just proves Thompson is all about the money. Yes the Warriors are a great team but he was very clear if the Warriors did not offer the maximum contract he would talk to the Clippers and Lakers. That was him saying “I’m going to sign with the highest bidder“.
As did Step and as will Durant ……
He shouldn’t be about the money?
He wasn’t about the money when he and green to sign for 16 million a few years ago. Harrison Barnes WAS about the money rejected that 16 million and went to the Mavs for 23 million.
Harrison Barnes was about the money Klay Thompson wasn’t Draymond Green wasn’t.
Steph Curry wasn’t when he signed his 10 million deal for 4 years. Different group of guys I’ll tell you that. They’re willing to wait until the team can afford to pay them the big bucks.
You don’t think they can afford to pay him? From Bloomberg in March, GS, “has taken in an unprecedented $2 billion in the form of tickets, suites, and sponsorships, more than double the franchise’s estimate for the privately financed Chase Center in San Francisco, according to team President Rick Welts.”
This year they will challenge the NY Knicks for the largest revenue producing team in the league. I think they can afford it.
The team is in a different position now then the time I’m referring to above, which is 4 years ago.
@gary Curry wasn’t doing anyone a favor. That was his rookie deal and it was the max amount he could sign for.
And Barnes left because the Warriors were signing Durant and GSW had no intention in brining him back, and certainly not at the price Dallas was offering. Your take is just off son.
It was a favor on both sides. It was not his rookie deal it was an extension 40 million four years. Less than market value because of his ankles.
Thompson and green signed their extensions the summer before Durant and that’s when they offered it to Barnes as well. He declined played out the year and became a free agent.
Durant really messed up. He’s pretty much done now.
Warriors 4 Life.
Why?
This was offical on july 1st. Why does it take 9.days to announce it after the initial report
Maybe because the man just had surgery, and even though they agreed to a deal, he still had to sign it for it to be announced.
Why are all my post posting double?
Trade him for Westbrook
