AUGUST 7: The three-team trade is now official, the Kings, Celtics, and Hawks all announced today in press releases.
The 2023 second-round pick that the Hawks are sending to Boston originally belonged to the Trail Blazers and was shipped to Atlanta by the Clippers in the Lou Williams trade in March, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic (Twitter link).
JULY 30: The Celtics are trading veteran big man Tristan Thompson to the Hawks for guard Kris Dunn, forward Bruno Fernando and a 2023 second-rounder, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets.
However, Thompson isn’t staying with the Hawks. He’s being forwarded to the Kings, with guard Delon Wright going to Atlanta.
All the players in the three-way deal have expiring contracts. Thompson will make $9.7MM next season, while Dunn will secure just over $5MM and Fernando will collect $1.8MM. Wright will make approximately $8.5MM next season.
The move pushes the Celtics another $3MM below the luxury tax threshold, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets. Dunn had a player option on his contract and opted in earlier this week, which made the trade viable.
After nine seasons in Cleveland, Thompson played in 54 regular-season games with the Celtics, including 43 starts. He averaged 7.6 PPG and 8.1 RPG.
Dunn’s lone season in Atlanta was a washout due to an ankle injury. He only appeared in four regular-season games, but does give the Celtics another option for their backcourt rotation with Kemba Walker getting traded this offseason.
Fernando, an early second-round pick in 2019, appeared in 89 regular-season games during his first two years in the league.
Thompson gives the Kings some frontcourt insurance with Richaun Holmes entering free agency.
Wright averaged 10.0 PPG and 3.6 APG in 27 games with Sacramento after being acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline. Wright can play either guard spot and will likely slide into a backup role with Atlanta.
Bad news. You know how many strip clubs are in Atlanta?
Lou Williams does.
Is it that hard to understand that Tristan is going to Sacramento in this deal?
sorry bud, but you’re responding to comments from hours ago before the trade was updated. you’re late.
Weird trade for Atlanta, in my opinion. Does leave the Celitcs with some potentially extremely strong defensive lineups
Dunn misses half the season every year.
Sorta perfect trade for Atl. How u figure it’s “weird”
B/c they need his defense at the guard spot, and he can play with Trae Young and their shooters, and be a good playmaker for them in 2nd units. Thought it was a really strong pickup for them last year. He and Solomon Hill were high on my list for them going into last offseason
I also said that before they amazingly got Delon Wright when they made this a 3 team trade
Yeah Delon is the best player in the trade, IMO. If I were Boston I think I would have tried to do TT for Delon straight up.
Cost saving for Celtics
It’s not always about wins
Id say the Celtics got an amazing return for Tristan
Dunn and Fernando are both solid pickups for an underwhelming Thompson
I got a bleacher report notification that Bruno Caboclo was traded not Fernando. Thompson is old, slightly overpaid and doesn’t fit Atlanta who already has Clint, meanwhile the Celtics get Getnando a young big who will most likely get waived due to Boston’s already tremendous depth at that position. Kris dunn is a good defender for a guard. Boston wins the trade by a hair.
They didn’t get Thompson to replace Clint, they got him to be Clint’s backup. They basically just traded a backup from a position of depth for a backup at a position without depth.
Yeah he’s just backing up until Okongwu gets healthy. Swapping him with Dunn is whatever. Getting the roster spot by trading Bruno is the bigger deal. That dude blows lol
Scratch that, guess Delon Wright is gonna be replacement for Dunn.
Man y’all are terrible at this
celtics back to acquiring injured PG’s
Celtics need to waive Kris Dunn because he has not been playing well for the last 4 years
I read that the kings are involved as well. Anybody else see that?
Seems like a bad trade from both teams really….
The hawks drafted Onyeka Okungwu 6th overall just last year to be the back up centre behind Capela. In college he averaged 16-8.5 with 3 blocks and was developing a three ball. Now he’s going to be the third string centre, what a waste of a draft pick, and poor Okungwu obviously the team don’t care about developing him. Id be demanding a trade.
As for the Celtics Thompson was a weird fit in the first place. He had championship experience and you guys overpaid for him and last season he wasn’t very good. But you traded him to get back Kris Dunn who is always injured. I can see that it saved you money but surely you could’ve done better.
Why not Thompson for DeAndre Jordan?
Basically the same averages but Jordan is a lot better as a rim protector, he is 20% better from the field (meaning he won’t take dumb shots) and his PER (efficiency) is 60 places better.
Or what about Thompson for Pat Beverly?
Beverly is 5 mil more expensive but he could be a start at PG. Hes great defensively, and for his whole career hit about 38% from deep to give you the spacing.
Don’t like Beverly could’ve chosen the return of Rondo? He improved a lot as a 3 point shooter, great veteran leadership, a good defender and still a good playmaker.
Just think it was bad from both teams
okungwu just had surgery. won’t be back until January.
Smh ur reading comprehension is just terrible. Read over the trade again, it’s a 3 team deal & really not that hard to understand… maybe read it again twice actually
Buddy when this trade was posted on here it was orginally written as a Celtics Hawks trade only.
Smh, the joke wasn’t even funny the first 6 or 7 times.
Get some new material, don’t be like Henny Youngman.
His comment was posted when it didn’t seem like a 3 team trade
OO just had shoulder surgery. If he was healthy he’d be the backup. Reading into something that isn’t really there…
Because DeAndre Jordan is not good. Even worse than Thompson
I literally just explained why he’s better. Better blocks, and much better efficiency
I don’t think DeAndre Jordan can run the floor anymore.
Dunn has a chance to be a breakout candidate with the Celtics.
Key word: candidate.. we can expect much of the same from Dunn, but it’s a great fit on the Celtics
Even with the addition of a third team it makes little sense.
Kings get a W cause they need a centre and definitely didn’t need Wright.
Hawks get a down guard but atleast Wright is healthier but he also cost twice as much so that’s an L.
And again Celtics you guys could’ve down better so I’m giving you an L aswell
Tristan Thompson is terrible so I think the Celtics got a solid return
A healthy Dunn is much more valuable than a healthy Thompson
Wright is the best player in the deal , so I think Hawks walk away with a W..
Not sure why the Celtics passed on wright to land dunn, but I guess they like the defensive upside of a potential Dunn/Smart pairing
I swear to God we just keep racking up the Ws #Atl
Can someone help me breakdown this trade?
First Trade (immediate)
Kris Dunn into Boston trade exception.
Atlanta gets $5M trade exception
Second Trade (delayed until free agency)
Delon Wright to ATL
Tristan Thompson to SAC
POR 2023 2nd from ATL to BOS
Does Bruno Fernando go to SAC or BOS?
Does the Hawks accept Delon Wright into their MLE or use Bruno Fernando & the trade exception from Kris Dunn to trade him to Sacramento?
idk
Khole said he better get on a Cali team so she can keep an eye on him or they are done ..
Geez great 24 hrs for Atl, this is what you call letting all the value come to you while being prepared doing your homework beforehand
Great draft great trade
I know a lot of people are weary of turning to ATL so quick but Imo they are a lot better off than the Boston’s Miami’s of today- I’ll move them into tier one in the East w Mil Brk Philly today confidently.
They’ll have the depth over all of them to run a cleaner season and cover postseason injs better as well
They’ll be solid as long as they stay healthy
@Wut- Thats the thing tho, nobody wants injs but ATL is better prepared for them than those other 3 teams if they do occur. They can probably rest players better in season as well (at least while supplanting the W-L record while)
Nobody has ever really had a problem of having too much depth but ATL is giving the notion a run for its money
Can’t have too much depth. Trading two guys and an irrelevant pick to get Wright and an opening spot on the roster, schlenk is no joke. Good GM.
Considering that the Hawks picked up that POR 2023 2nd rounder in the trade of Rajon Rondo -> Lou Williams. (Hawks still holding onto the LAC 2027 2nd rounder also from that trade.)
Those Rondo & Dunn signings from last year are looking better now after LouWill’s trip to the Eastern Conference Finals and the arrival of Delon Wright to provide a defensive guard with size.
We weren’t even close to healthy this season & we were a top 4 team. We’ll be much better next season
no team was healthy this season..
I was big on the hawks this year but how do you figure they will just automatically be better next year?
Even if healthy, they are not better than the Bucks or Nets. That only leaves the Sixers for them to leapfrog, and the only way they do that is if Embiid is hurt most of the year. But that has nothing to do with the health of the Hawks and has everything to do with Embiid
Big facts
This is a good trade for Kris Dunn. Boston probably has the weakest PG depth chart in the league so this is a great opportunity for him to earn a new contract.
But it’s better for Atlanta. Wright will be a notch up on both Lou Will and Dunn, IMO.
Atlanta looks poised to be good next year, especially if Reddish and Hunter continue to improve.
I think I’d put Brooklyn and Milwaukee a notch above everyone. But Atlanta is definitely in the thick of it with Philly, Miami, Boston, and possibly NY in that Tier 1A for me.
They’ll be solid as long as they stay healthy
Delon is the best player in this lot by far
Remember when Lebron was getting this clown a max deal?
Shlenk said he would be upgrading backup PG and did.
It took him two (financial) years to do it! ;)
Works for all teams. Do t need Thompson with Al here. Worth to look at Bruno for a yr. He needs to wake up. Has potential to be atleast a solid backup. Dunn too, they should get a chance in Boston. Both on expiring deals. Thompson is good for a young team. And Hawks get a solid backup for Young.
Still scratching my head over Kings pick. Why another PG, seriously why ?? Z Williams or Bouknight right there. All the Buddy drama still going on. Laker trade almost happened. They could of moved him by picking either of two. Now what , they are trading Halliburton. Makes no sense.
You know what though, a couple years ago when Kings had Fox, Buddy and Bogdan, you might have said the same thing if the Kings drafted Luka over Bagley. Sometimes its better to take the best available player instead of trying to fill a need with an inferior player
This is either good or bad news for richaun Holmes. Time will tell though.
Delon Wright is a huge pickup for Atlanta. Perfect for for what they’ve needed. Also, the little I’ve seen of Jalen Joh son so far, he fits exactly another thing they’ve needed with defense and versatility at the 4/5. So really big additions for them the last couple of days, and I’m really curious to see how they decide to handle things with their roster.
Give their GM credit. He got put in a situation where he had to overpay for pieces he didnt want to last year, but he continued to grab the pieces he knew he wanted to build
Considering that the Hawks picked up that POR 2023 2nd rounder in the trade of Rajon Rondo -> Lou Williams. (Hawks still holding onto the LAC 2027 2nd rounder also from that trade.)
He turned Rondo & Dunn (and Fernando) into Wright & 2027 2nd rounder from LAC.
Anybody that does not think ATL will be better is wrong. Reddish and Hunter are growing. Heueter is coming into his own. Trae will be better too. They will be top 3 in wins In the East I see Philly or Mil taking the regular season easy.
Just another journeyman…
I’m sure this isn’t Thompson’s first 3 way.
