MARCH 3, 7:58pm: The Sixers have officially signed Jordan and ended Cauley-Stein’s 10-day deal, the team confirmed in a press release. Jordan will earn a rest-of-season salary of $592,103, while Philadelphia takes on a cap hit of $374,126.
MARCH 3, 1:55pm: Jordan is expected to sign with the Sixers unless a team claims him off waivers prior to the 4:00pm CT deadline Thursday, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link). A waiver claim is considered unlikely, says Wojnarowski.
The Sixers plan to release Willie Cauley-Stein from his 10-day contract a couple days early in order to sign Jordan, Wojnarowski tweets. Cauley-Stein’s 10-day deal had been on track to run through March 5.
FEBRUARY 28: The Sixers are the frontrunners to acquire DeAndre Jordan, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, though the timing of such a move will have luxury tax implications.
The Lakers are waiving DeAndre Jordan in order to add free agent guard D.J. Augustin. Once Jordan hits the waiver wire, his veteran’s minimum contract could be claimed by any team. Philadelphia, which has the seventh-best record in the league, is low in the pecking order.
As Bobby Marks of ESPN points out (Twitter link), Philadelphia currently has a projected $13.19MM tax bill and that would rise to $16.1MM if the team claims Jordan and his $1.66MM cap hit.
If the Sixers wait for Jordan to pass through waivers with the hope no other team claims him, they could sign him for the prorated veteran’s minimum. In that scenario, their projected tax bill would only increase to $13.8MM.
The Sixers have been seeking a veteran center to back up Joel Embiid since trading Andre Drummond to Brooklyn in the Ben Simmons–James Harden blockbuster. They acquired Paul Millsap in that deal but Millsap, 37, is 6’7”’ and a natural forward. They also signed Willie Cauley-Stein to a 10-day deal but may view Jordan as a better option.
Not quite as good as Dwight or Drummond who they had the past couple seasons but he’s very similar to those guys & a seasoned vet who should be able to hold his own against most backup 5s for about 10-12mins/gm
Jordan is done
Dwight is 3 times better
Drum is 6 times better than Jordan
Ergo Dwight = 1/2 Drummond?
Just want to get my math straight.
Go. Just Go.
Sillivan, Jordan might be done but he’s better than Willie cauley-stein.
Jordan might just be the worst player in the league. Sounds like you haven’t watched ball in quite some time my friend
This same dude said the Knicks are bad this year because they miss Elfrid Payton. He does not actually watch basketball.
I’d be surprised if he plays that many minutes before the playoffs esp with WCS in the mix. He does allow Doc to get more situational I guess, and it’s another big body which matters at this pt in the year. Not a superhero but not a bad pickup.
Only exception is if they have a big lead in garbage time against a garbage team like the Sixers.
Oh wait…
Ah yes, the “garbage” Sixers who sit in 3rd and have the best superstar pairing in the league. Gtfo
Biggest question for the Sixers is who they’ll blame this year now that scapegoat Ben is gone…
Ben put a huge cloud over Philadelphia before the season started until now . Now adjust and try steady the ship
Troll says what?
I’ve never heard of you sorry
Celtics should of signed him. Not only to keep him away from Sixers. But they could use a rim protector.
Adding Jordan makes sense. Veteran who can block shots and rebound when Embiid needs a blow.
Needs a blow?
Ok lets not get blue here this is a family operation.
I thought it was Harden that alienated Jordan out of Brooklyn…. They even had altercation during the game on the bench last season…
Everyone & their mother values more DJ than WCS, get real!
Here everybody says how finished DJ is, but… seems that many teams are interested in him, he must be still pretty good at what he does, right?
BTW… how cheap can that awful organization also known as PHI can be? I mean they are claiming to wanna compete this year & they are worrying ’bout a couple mil?!? Seriously go for it or not, if a couple mil makes such a difference just ain’t worthy to try, SMH!
Geez louise, learn to comprehend the difference between a reporter speculating or rather explaining what the options/ scenario that could play out vs what the team has stated or indicated what they plan to do. Sixers have said zero about their approach to the buyout market. The article is simply laying out what the tax implications are for being aggressive and claiming him or waiting for him to pass thru waivers and signing him.
He’s not interested in facts.
Why so mad bro?
Would prefer Jordan over WCS that’s for sure.
That’s we’re having Doc Rivers comes in handy. Having been his long time coach at the clippers hopefully Jordan can go back to being a little bit more happier and productive.
Everyone is saying he’s washed but He’s currently putting up 4-5.5 with a block in 13 with the Lakers. Would be better if he could be abit closer to JaVale McGee who is putting up 10-7 with a block in 16 in Phoenix.
According to PER, he’s currently the 80th most efficient player in the league. Just for reference that’s better than Boogie, Dedmon, Tristan Thompson, Enes, Ibaka, Tony Bradley and Blake Griffin (all small minutes 5’s).
Would be ideal if he can give us 7-6 in about 13 mins. He’s kinda perfect for that second unit who have loads of three point shooters and he can just collect offensive rebounds and get us second chance points. Then defensively he can be of use aswell.
Really like this team Doc and Daryl are putting together. Won’t be surprised to see Austin Rivers come in the offseason too. Our bench could do with combo guard that can shoot and has some experience.
DeAndre was only good bc of Chris Paul, if not he’s a center who had a good stretch of like 5 years with good D but now he can’t do anything.
No idea why he’s signed. Games he’s played the last couple of years- non existent. Way too slow.
The BEARD makes everyone better, welcome DeAndre.
Ever since he joined the Lakers he was ‘done’. Now suddenly he’s a Seasoned vet that can rebound and block.
He’s 9th with 20 TRB per 100 with 400 or more minutes played. Will take that all day. Look at advanced stats before you talk sometimes, yes he’s mostly cooked. But it’s 12 mpg and he’s getting 5 boards. It’s exactly what the Sixers need. Extra possessions.
He can still rebound and block shots at a solid clip. But he can’t move his feet to stop anyone at all
DJ has his best chance at winning a ring being a 2nd or 3rd backup for Embid with Doc an the sixers
This guy has been washed for three years… Better off signing a G-League guy. At least they can jump. Yeah he’ll block a shot if someone runs right at him…
I’d rather have Callie Stein
I think that offensively and defensively they are a wash statistically. WCS can probably keep up with defensive switching better than DJ because he is 5 years younger.
Who is he legitimately guarding most of the time tho. 6 Minutes on D, he can guard traditional bigs like Drummond, ,Capela, Vucevic to a degree, Horford.
Watching Willie cauley-stein on the Warriors I disagree. He gets lost out there. Maybe the Warriors scheme is complicated? I’d rather go with the vet though he may have slipped physically with quickness.
Was huge on WCS out of Kentucky
I saw a great 8/5/1/1/1 guy
But he never grew, never got a handle nor a jumper and is now 5 years later
He’s basically a pro rebounder
He should go to the TWolves and maybe playing with KAT Dlo and those guys he could carve out a role off the bench or something.
Another good deal by the FO. Jordan is a solid back up and an upgrade over WCS
Have you not see Jordan? He is done been done since his days with the Clippers he has nothing left in the tank WCS is probably an upgrade over DJ but hey maybe him back with Doc would get him good again.
He’s the 80th most efficient player in the league, meaning when he’s on the court he gets about putting up numbers without hesitation. Considering his best days were under Doc at the clippers I’m hoping he can refind some of that form a little and be a little better. I’ll be happy to see him chime in with 8-7 in 12 minutes most nights.
8-7 in 12 minutes? Good lord. They can’t play him for 12 minutes, he can’t guard anyone.
He currently averages 4-5 with a block in 13 minutes.
I don’t expect him to be JaVale McGee who averages 9-7 in 16.
But if he could meet in the middle with about 7-6 in 13 would be good.
Horrible pick up DJ isn’t good anymore he has nothing left 76ers were better of keeping WCS DJ has been done since lob city.
Can’t believe they did my man Willie like that and he can’t even be in the playoffs? Smdh! What a classless org
Cauley-Stein is still playoff-eligible — only a player who is placed on waivers after March 1 is ineligible, and a player who has his 10-day contract terminated early doesn’t technically go through waivers (he becomes a free agent immediately).
Ah, thank you Luke as always!
DJ hasn’t aged well. If there was any doubt that he’s done, it ended last year in BKN after the Harden (Allen) deal (with Claxton still hurt). Hard to imagine a team more desperate for someone who could just give them some decent minutes at C, and he couldn’t give them anything, starting or off the bench.
