JULY 3: Rose’s two-year, minimum-salary deal is official. The Grizzlies put out a press release announcing the signing.
JUNE 30: Free agent point guard Derrick Rose intends to sign a multiyear contract with the Grizzlies, sources tell Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter link).
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link), it will be a two-year deal for the former MVP. Shams Charania of The Athletic has more details, tweeting that it’ll be a fully guaranteed minimum-salary contract.
A former Memphis Tigers star before he entered the NBA, Rose has battled injuries over the last several seasons and fell out of the Knicks’ rotation this past season even when he was healthy. In 27 total appearance for New York in 2022/23, he averaged a career-worst 5.6 points per game on .384/.302/.917 shooting.
Still, Rose put up solid numbers during the two prior seasons (13.8 PPG, 4.1 APG, .462/.394/.886 shooting in 76 games), and the Grizzlies seem to believe the 34-year-old still has something left in the tank.
According to Wojnarowski, Memphis envisions Rose as a player who can contribute on the floor and be a leader in the locker room. He and recently acquired guard Marcus Smart will give a new look to a Grizzlies backcourt that no longer features Tyus Jones and will be without star point guard Ja Morant for the first 25 games of the season.
The Grizzlies already have 14 players on guaranteed salaries for 2023/24 even before adding Rose, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have to complete the signing and call it an offseason. The team still has flexibility to make trades or to use the mid-level exception.
Another veteran added to the locker room.
yea….how’s that locker room thing been working out?
…which is exactly why they’re trying to address the issue, first via Smart and now Rose. It shows they’re actually taking it seriously for once.
DRose is another perfect guy to mentor Ja, along with Marcus Smart & Sarunas Jasikevicius. Ja is basically a lankier version of young DRose
Called it!
Derrick Rose signing with the Memphis Grizzlies is great!!! I said it a week ago when he got waived by the New York Knicks that he would look great on the Milwaukee Bucks Chicago Bulls or Memphis Grizzlies for he can mentor Ja Morant. It’s a great signing. I would love to see him finish his career with them. Healthy and with Ja Morant all the way focused in this is a championship caliber team.
Got into the league from balling out at Memphis and is going full circle now playing for them in the pros
Not really. That’d be more accurate if he went back to college in a sort of Billy Madison situation, where the only way Derrick could take over his father’s company would be by successfully going back and completing his education.
But of course is won’t be easy. People like Eric who feel it’s their turn will be looking to stymie Rose at every turn. But darned if he doesn’t come through in the end and save the day, winning Miss Lippy’s affection and leveraging his newfound sense of responsibility into a multimillion dollar deal with Netflix.
If that was the case then your comment would be correct. Sorry to break it to you.
Still one of the most liked and respected guys in the league. The biggest college star Memphis has ever had, so if Ja is going to listen. Maybe it will be to a guy who grew up in a really rough part of Chicago and has had more success and hardship than 99% of players ever will.
Don’t forget about this guy… link to m.youtube.com
Maybe Ja could learn a thing or too from him about public relations.
Still one of the most liked and respected guys in the league and I’m still not sure why. Breaks into a woman’s apartment, drugs her, takes turns gang raping her with his buddies, then claims ignorance to get off Scott free in court along with fan and media perception.
He’ll contribute, above the minimum salary level. Just one of those guys who usually puts more in than he takes out. Hopefully some of it will be on the court, not just the locker room. If he can back to where he was before his injury in the season before last, he will. Either way, hope he’s happy with it. Always be welcome back at MSG.
Just mentoring Ja is worth the minimum .
And what’s wrong with 2.6 mill a yr for two yrs.
For that price I’d have kept him if he was willing. I liked who he had become and he still has the skills to perform, although limited.
To the people who felt Rose was worth more than the minimum… Lol
Also, my fantasy team name will be “Guns N Roses”. You’re welcome
Two years for Rose that’s interesting probably a player/coach for the team.
Smart and Rose can hold down PG till Ja returns. Then they have good depth. And I agree. Smart and Rose should calm his ares down. Time to grow up kid ……
Memphis has actually made a bunch of savvy moves, while also bringing back every returning player that mattered. The only criticism would be that they haven’t really moved the needle much overall. But they’ve made no bad moves.
Rose might be the right mentor on the court… Ja takes too many risks and Rose learnt the hard way about those risks…
Ja belongs in jail or an in-patient mental hospital before he hurts someone other than himself.
Should’ve suspended him for a season!
In any sane country he would be in jail for that night club incident…
atlast Aquaman will be teammates with Drose. Adams always wearing Rose signature shoes hehe
If you love this game. You root for DRose. He’s rested for a year and half. And should have plenty in the tank. To be a part of the rotation. We all know when Ja comes back. His mins will go down drastically. He still will be a big part of team. He’s a class act. He’s got the goods to help Morant. And can also help Grizz with depth. Rooting for DRose
Just what the Doctor ordered.
