JULY 6: The trade between the Kings and Mavericks is official, according to an announcement from the Mavs (Twitter link). Dallas acquired Holmes into the trade exception created in the Bertans deal, along with the rights to Prosper, in exchange for cash considerations.
JUNE 22: The Kings will trade center Richaun Holmes and the 24th pick to the Mavericks, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Marquette’s Olivier-Maxence Prosper was the selection at No. 24.
Holmes is under contract for 2023/24 at $12MM and holds a $12.8MM player option for the following season. Dallas will acquire him using the traded player exception it created earlier in the night by sending Davis Bertans to Oklahoma City.
Holmes, who had been Sacramento’s starting center for two-and-a-half seasons, saw his playing time slip dramatically after the 2022 trade deadline as Domantas Sabonis took over the starting job. Holmes averaged just 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 42 games while playing 8.3 minutes per night.
The Mavericks continue to add frontline depth after landing Duke center Dereck Lively II with the 12th pick. It appears likely that Holmes will have a larger role in Dallas as the team tries to rebuild its supporting cast around Luka Doncic and the expected return of Kyrie Irving.
Prosper was able to raise his draft stock with an impressive showing at the combine and strong showings throughout the workout process. He reportedly held workouts with at least 16 teams.
The Kings’ return in the deal is not yet known, but it will likely be minimal, since Holmes is considered a salary dump. Sacramento now has the ability to create more than $30MM in cap room this offseason.
For what?
I’m baaaaaccccckkkkk
Nothing. Salary dump trade.
They need to trade something. I forget silvers new NBA. Anything goes
Might not be fore much of anything. Pure salary dump from the Kings. Mavs absorbing due to the Bertans trade.
Now Kings have $50 million cap room
33M is the most they can open up.
Good move for both sides. Holmes will be more important for the Mavs than Bertans was, and the addition of Prosper gives them a player that could evolve into a Finney-Smith knockoff.
Holmes was out of the Kings rotation, so they get out from under his salary and have even more cap space to spend with. Giving up pick 24 to give yourself an extra $12M to spend is a reasonable trade-off.
Wood not coming back …
Mavs got better. Definitely addressed their defense. Still not with Kyrie. Never liked him.
I’ve seen a lot of Kings basketball. Richaun is not that much of a difference maker on the defensive end. Although any defensive would be an improvement in Dallas
What if it a wood sign and trade lol
That’s not a bad idea
Dallas making one questionable move after another. With everyone out in the west making improvements, it’ll be a challenge for them to make the playoffs. And if they get through the play-in, that’s about as far as they’ll go with this squad.
You do realize the off-season is a week old right?
Yes, and the cap will restrict them after resigning Irving. Lively and Holmes aren’t the moves that will get them over the hump.
These moves also opened up the mid level and bi annual exceptions you realize right? So they dumped Bertans contract and #10 for Holmes 12 and 24. All while cutting salary and having those exceptions to sign FA. Which the free agent signing period doesn’t start for another week. “If they make it through the play in which is as far as they will make it with this squad” “aren’t the moves to get them over the hump” What kind of clown starts judging their off-season as a whole before free agency even starts?! How many teams currently assembled could make a run right now? The suns have like 4 players under contract I guess with your logic they can fill out a roster so it’s impossible to think 4 guys can make the playoffs. Get real. You obviously are short sighted and clueless when it comes to understanding how team building the off-season the salary cap etc all work. Maybe you should stick to 2k or draft kings.
Except it’s Dallas. Worst owner in pro sports. No need to wait to judge, we all know how this is going to play out.
Kings should see if they can pry Brandon Ingram from the Pelicans or Siakam or OG from the Raptors. Something like 3 1sts and Malik Monk.
Fox – Huerter – Murray – BI/Siakam/OG – Sabonis
Would take that team to the next level.
A deal of that caliber doesn’t happened without Keegan Murray going the other way which is not happening under any circumstance. That’s why OG isn’t already a King. Hell, considering Ujiri’s delusion trade expectations I’d be surprised if he wasn’t asking for Fox and Murray for Spicy and OG.
Kings don’t need a splash, they need consistency. Monk, Huerter, Lyles, Davion, and Davis were all huge contributors to that 3 seed last year and I hate to break that core up at least until the deadline this year
Nothing the Mavs done really moves the needle much. They played there way out of the playoffs to keep their draft pick which they hoped they could trade to get better.
Ultimately they don’t really add much and missed a playoffs run with Kyrie and Luka.
If I’m Kyrie right now there’s no way I stay in Dallas. They trade for you then tank you out the playoffs in order to try get better. Then they don’t make a trade to get better.
Your just wasting your talent and time there.
Kyrie for PG…
Clippers want a point guard, Kawhi wants someone that can facilitate and run the offence, while also having a sidekick on offence that’ll give them 20-30 points. Kyrie played under Tyrone Lue, he’s a LA guy. He’s a big shot maker and the best ball handler in the league.
After that, you have a good bunch of role playing vets all earning anywhere from 20-10 mil. Marcus Morris, Nic Batum, Eric Gordon, Norman Powell, Robert Covington and Ivan Zubac. Why not try package a couple of these guy and 1 or 2 of your younger guys and try upgrade the talent you have.
RoCo, Mann and BJ Boston for John Collins?
Kyrie Powell Kawhi Collins Zubac
Bones Gordon Batum Morris …
They were never going to acquire a “Star” with the 10th pick. All the talk of them trying to find a third star was always nonsense anyway. They needed to find better fitting pieces around their two stars. Last night was a step in the right direction. I think most would agree that Bertans and 10 for Holmes 12 and 24 while cutting 5 million in salary is a good move. This isn’t 2k and Whether or not you think it “moves the needle” is irrelevant as the off-season just began. A lot is still going to happen. One thing that is not going to happen though is your preposterous Kyrie/PG trade idea.
You keep saying this isn’t 2k…
Pretty obvious you’re the one playing video games here. Enough with the insults, learn some real basketball knowledge before you post.
Learn some real basketball knowledge?! You have posted multiple times “they need a new owner” I think maybe you need to take your own advice when it comes to basketball knowledge pal.
Some logic to it all. If they were going to take Lively at #10 had there been no available trade, then swaping #10 and Bertans (who they really couldn’t, without triggering more guarateed money) for #12, #24 and Holmes (who they can use) is hard to argue with. Holmes can make it look like a great move if he can defend the way he did a few years ago.
He cannot defend like he did
It was a salary dump by the kings, hardly a move to make Dallas better. Only way Dallas improves is with new ownership.
Dallas got a lot better
Does this mean Dallas can no longer trade him
Holmes? He could be flipped right away if his salary isn’t aggregated with another’s player. Dallas would have to wait two months to aggregate his salary in a trade.
Drafting Lively now. It’s good to have vets around him. Like I always say, depth is a good thing. Dallas needs all the help they can get on D.
F- for this illegal trade. They need to receive something. Cash, future considerations, draft rights, etc etc. You cannot trade for salary relief. Traded the 1st to resign Barnes, Lyles and Len. Lol F-
