Draft Notes: Hampton, Elite Camp, Celtics, Simonds, Hawks

RJ Hampton has decided to graduate high school early and reclassify to the Class of 2019, he told ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. Hampton is the No. 4 player in ESPN’s top-100 class of early 2020 rankings, explaining his major decision to reclassify to Givony.

“I’ve decided to reclassify to the 2019 class,” Hampton told ESPN. “I am doing this because I feel that from a development standpoint, this is the right move for me at this time in order to play against the highest level of competition possible. I am eager to test myself against older and more physically developed players in order to help improve my weaknesses and prepare me for reaching the ultimate goal of playing in the NBA.”

With his decision, Hampton will enroll for college this summer and be eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft. A 6-foot-5 versatile player at 188 pounds, Hampton is one of the most promising young point guards in high school, now shifting his focus to interested schools such as Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis and Texas Tech, according to ESPN.

“This is a move we’ve been contemplating for some time and we don’t take lightly,” Hampton’s father, Rod, told ESPN. “As someone that played in college as well as professionally in Europe, I know that you can’t skip steps in a player’s development. Thankfully, because of the hard work that RJ has put in in the classroom — achieving a 3.75 GPA and a 1280 SAT — he was able to have this option. This weekend playing against the top players in high school basketball at the Nike EYBL, as well as earlier this month at USA Basketball, my wife, Markita, and I realized that RJ is ready to take the next step and challenge himself by taking the next step in level of competition.”

Here are some other draft-related notes today:

Cavs Secure Permission To Interview Ettore Messina

The Cavaliers have received permission to interview Spurs assistant Ettore Messina for their vacant head coaching job, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times (Twitter link).

Messina adds to a long list of coaches who have registered interest from Cleveland, including Blazers assistants David Vanterpool and Nate Tibbetts, Nuggets assistants Jordi Fernandez and Wes Unseld Jr., Mavs assistant Jamahl Mosley, Jazz assistant Alex Jensen, Heat assistant Juwan Howard, Spurs assistant Ime Udoka and former Grizzlies head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

Among the group, only Mosley, Howard, Bickerstaff, and Jensen have interviewed to date. The Cavs are conducting a wide-ranging search in wake of their mutual parting with former coach Larry Drew, but the team has yet to ask for permission to interview any college coaching candidates, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

Messina holds several years of coaching experience and started with the Spurs in 2014. Before that, he spent over two decades coaching overseas and eventually agreed to become a consultant for the Lakers in 2011-12.

“Coach Messina is one of the finest coaches we have in the business, and hopefully he will get a shot to show that (as a head coach) in the NBA at some point” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said this season, as relayed by Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.

This would be the second head coaching gig Messina has interviewed for in the past calendar year. He pursued the Suns’ job last spring and ultimately lost to the recently fired Igor Kokoskov, also receiving interest from teams such as the Kings and Lakers in their coaching searches at the time.

Cavs To Meet With Spurs Assistant Udoka

The Cavaliers will interview Spurs assistant Ime Udoka this weekend for their head coaching vacancy, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets.

Udoka was a candidate for the Pistons’ head coaching job last summer before Detroit owner Tom Gores chose Dwane Casey.

Udoka joins a growing list of possible replacements for Larry Drew, who mutually agreed to part ways with the organization after the season.

Former Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff interviewed for the position on Tuesday and Jazz assistant coach and former Canton Charge assistant Alex Jensen was interviewed on Friday. Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley sat down with Cleveland’s brass last week. Nuggets assistants Jordi Fernandez and Wes Unseld Jr. are also expected to be interviewed.

Cavs To Interview Nuggets Assistant Jordi Fernandez

The Cavaliers have requested and been granted permission to interview Nuggets assistant Jordi Fernandez for the team’s head coaching gig, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com passes along.

Cleveland is being respectful of the Nuggets’ playoff run and an exact date for the interview has not yet been set. The Cavs have long viewed Fernandez as a candidate for the position, a source tells Fedor.

Fernandez is the second candidate on Denver’s staff that the Cavs have requested permission to interview. The club is also expected to meet with Wes Unseld Jr. at some point.

Former Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff interviewed for the Cavs’ position on Tuesday and Jazz assistant coach Alex Jenson will interview with the team on Friday. Mavs assistant Jamahl Mosley is expected to get another interview during the next wave after he had an impressive meeting with the team last week.

Five Key Offseason Questions: Cleveland Cavaliers

No team dropped off more significantly from 2017/18 to 2018/19 than the Cavaliers, who went from winning 50 regular season games and three playoff series to posting a dismal 19-63 mark and firing their head coach.

That drop-off was to be expected — no other team lost a player of LeBron James‘ caliber last summer, after all. Still, it was a jarring reminder that the post-LeBron era in Cleveland will be a challenging one, as the roster James left behind will have to be retooled – or rebuilt entirely – before it’s capable of contending again.

Here are five key questions facing the franchise this summer:

1. What’s the timeline for the Cavaliers’ rebuild?

Although the Cavaliers jettisoned several of their veteran players in trades over the last year, many high-priced vets remain on the books for one more season. Beyond 2019/20, only Kevin Love and Larry Nance have guaranteed salaries (Cedi Osman will be a restricted free agent that summer, and the club holds options on Collin Sexton and Ante Zizic).

The Cavaliers – whose first-round pick this spring can’t fall lower than No. 6 – could be in position to snag a potential franchise player like Zion Williamson or Ja Morant with some luck in the lottery. Throw in a pretty clean cap sheet starting in 2020 and there’s a blueprint for the team pushing its way back into the playoff picture in the East within the next couple years.

Still, the Cavs’ roster isn’t exactly loaded with young talent yet, and it’s not as if star free agents will be clamoring to sign with Cleveland in the summer of 2020, whether or not the team has cap room. If the organization is serious about building a roster capable of sustained success, it makes more sense to be patient than to try to get back to the postseason as soon as possible.

The Cavs’ long-term priorities will influence their moves this summer. If they recognize that it might be a few more years before legit contention is a possibility again, taking on bad-money contracts that extend beyond the 2019/20 season could be the right approach — even if those deals limit their cap flexibility for an extra year or two.Read more

Cavs Receive Permission To Interview Nuggets’ Unseld

The Cavaliers have received permission to interview another candidate for their head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who reports (via Twitter) that the Nuggets will allow Cleveland to meet with assistant Wes Unseld Jr.

Unseld’s inclusion in the Cavs’ head coaching search doesn’t come as a surprise. Shortly after word broke last month that Larry Drew wouldn’t return to the team’s sidelines next season, Wojnarowski identified Unseld as a potential target for Cleveland.

A veteran NBA assistant – and the son of Hall-of-Famer Wes Unseld – the younger Unseld served on coaching staffs in Washington, Golden State, and Orlando before arriving in Denver. He has been Michael Malone‘s lead assistant on the Nuggets’ bench since 2016.

The Cavaliers appears to be casting a wide net as they seek Drew’s replacement. Having already met with Juwan Howard, Jamahl Mosley, and J.B. Bickerstaff, the club has a Friday meeting lined up with Alex Jensen and has also received permission to speak to Unseld, David Vanterpool, and Nate Tibbetts.

Nuggets assistant Jordi Fernandez and Bucks assistant Darvin Ham have also been mentioned as possible candidates for the Cleveland job. Both of those teams remain alive in the playoffs, but now that they’ve requested permission to meet with Unseld, the Cavs could do the same with Fernandez and Ham.

Latest On Suns’, Cavs’ Head Coaching Searches

The Suns met with Monty Williams for a second time on Wednesday night, with team owner Robert Sarver in attendance for the interview, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (via Twitter). According to Marc Stein of The New York Times (via Twitter), league sources say the Suns’ job will be Williams’ if he wants it, and the possibility of a union between the two sides is one that’s gaining real momentum.

However, Williams is in high demand this spring, having also interviewed with the Lakers. Plus, he’d likely be a strong candidate to replace Brett Brown in Philadelphia if the Sixers bow out in the second round and the team decides to make a change on the sidelines. In other words, Williams can afford to be deliberate about his next move.

For what it’s worth, the Suns have yet to formally put an offer on the table to Williams, according to Wojnarowski. Stein and Woj both confirm that Williams is Phoenix’s top target, so the club may be waiting to see if the Lakers make him an offer that can be countered, as Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic hypothesized earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers – one of the other four teams in the market for a new head coach – continued their search this week by interviewing former Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff on Tuesday, per Joe Vardon of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Vardon also reported that Jazz assistant Alex Jensen would be interviewing with the Cavaliers later in the week — that meeting will take place on Friday, writes Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

The Cavs are being patient as they go through the interview process, and appear likely to meet with their finalists for a second round of interviews once they’ve talked to all the candidates once. Stein reports (via Twitter) that Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley, who met with Cleveland earlier in the process, is expected to advance to the next round.

Grizzlies Interview Alex Jensen For Head Coaching Job

After a front office shakeup that saw top decision-maker Chris Wallace re-assigned to the scouting department, the Grizzlies have taken their time addressing their head coaching vacancy. However, we can now add at least one name to their list of candidates.

Jazz assistant Alex Jensen was in Memphis today to interview for the Grizzlies’ head coaching position, league sources tell Tony Jones and Omari Sankofa II of The Athletic (Twitter link). Jensen becomes the first known candidate to replace J.B. Bickerstaff, who was dismissed by Memphis nearly three weeks ago.

Jensen, who has been on the coaching staff in Utah since 2013, has also been identified this month as a candidate for the Cavaliers‘ head coaching job. Joe Vardon of The Athletic reported today (via Twitter) that Jensen’s interview with the Cavs will take place later this week.

Prior to joining the Jazz, Jensen served as the head coach of the G League’s Canton Charge from 2011-13. He has also worked with the German national team in recent years, serving as an assistant coach for the squad since 2015.

Latest On Cavs' Head Coaching Search

  • The Cavaliers and J.B. Bickerstaff are working to set up a meeting for next week, sources tell Joe Vardon of The Athletic. Bickerstaff said on Wednesday that he’s “definitely interested” in Cleveland’s head coaching job. Vardon also confirms that Juwan Howard and Jamahl Mosley are the only candidates who have formally interviewed with the Cavs so far.
  • The Cavaliers remain interested in Nuggets assistant Jordi Fernandez, but have yet to officially line up an interview, league sources tell Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com (Twitter link). Denver remains alive in the playoffs, so the Cavs will have to work around the Nuggets’ schedule.

Cavs To Interview Jazz Assistant Alex Jensen

The Cavaliers requested and were granted permission to interview Jazz assistant Alex Jensen for their head coaching position, league sources tell Joe Vardon and Tony Jones of The Athletic (Twitter link). According to the Athletic duo, the meeting is expected to take place sometime next week.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported earlier this month that the Cavs were expected to meet with Jensen sometime after Utah’s season ended. The Jazz fell to the Rockets on Wednesday night, bringing their first-round series – and their season – to a close.

As Vardon observes (via Twitter), Jensen is one of many candidates with pre-existing ties to Cleveland — he served as the head coach of the Canton Charge, the Cavs’ G League affiliate from 2011-13 before joining the Jazz.

Of the Cavaliers’ other head coaching targets, Jamahl Mosley and Nate Tibbetts were previously a part of coaching staffs in Cleveland, while J.B. Bickerstaff‘s father Bernie Bickerstaff was also a Cavs assistant a few years ago.

Heat assistant Juwan Howard and Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool are among the other coaches who have either interviewed for the Cavs’ job or will do so soon.
