On this date in 1995, Jason Kidd of the Mavericks and Grant Hill of the Pistons were named co-winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, marking the first time since 1971 that two players shared the trophy. Boston’s Dave Cowens and Portland’s Geoff Petrie were the last players to come away as co-winners of the award.

Hoops Links: D-League, Heat, Parsons

On this date in 1987, Warriors guard Sleepy Floyd set two NBA playoff records when he dropped 29 points in the fourth quarter and 39 points in the second half.  Thanks to Floyd, Golden State beat the Lakers 129-121 in a high-scoring Game 4.  In total, Floyd put up a whopping 51 points against Los Angeles.

Hoops Links: Rondo, D-League, Rockets

On this date in 1988, Michael Jordan became the first player to score 50 or more points in consecutive playoff games when he drilled Cleveland for 55 points in the Bulls’ 106-101 victory in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first round series.  In the game prior, Jordan scored 50 points to power Chicago’s 104-93 victory.

Hoops Links: Sonics, Nuggets, Jordan

On this date in 1984, the Nets shocked the world. New Jersey had never won a playoff game in their NBA history, but they managed to beat Julius Erving and the defending champion 76ers. Led by Buck Williams and Albert King, the Nets won the deciding Game 5, 101-98, at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

On this date in 2001, Mavericks big man Wang Zhizhi played in his first NBA game, a 108-94 win over the Hawks, becoming the first Chinese player to compete in the NBA.  Wang had six points and three rebounds in eight minutes of play against Atlanta.

On this date in 1996, the Jazz beat the (Vancouver) Grizzlies, 105-91, increasing the Grizzlies’ record losing streak to 20 games. Vancouver would extend its losing streak to an NBA record 23 games.  The 23-game mark would later be tied by the Nuggets during the 1997/98 season and eclipsed by the 2010/11 Cavs and last season’s Sixers, who each lost 26 straight games.

On this date in 1992, Cavs coach Lenny Wilkens became only the fifth coach in NBA history (joining Red Auerbach, Jack Ramsay, Dick Motta, and Bill Fitch) to record 800 career victories after the Cavs beat the Nuggets 100-91.  The current leaderboard has Wilkens at No. 2 with 1,332 wins, just behind Don Nelson’s 1,335 career victories as a head coach.

Hoops Links: Knicks, Whiteside, Westbrook

On this date in 2008, the Hawks beat the Heat in the first NBA “do-over” game in a quarter-century.  Months earlier, Atlanta’s scorer mistakenly fouled out Miami’s Shaquille O’Neal with 51.9 seconds left in overtime and the Hawks up, 114-111.  The Heat won their appeal to have the end of the game replayed, but they did so without the services of Shaq since he was traded in the interim to the Suns.

On this date in 1978, John Drew of Atlanta committed 14 turnovers in a game against the Nets in New Jersey, an NBA record.  Years later, Suns guard Jason Kidd tied the record by committing 14 turnovers against the Knicks on November 17th, 2000.
