No Deal For Alessandro Gentile, Rockets

The Rockets and 2014 second-round pick Alessandro Gentile don’t have a deal in place for him to join the team for training camp, writes Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.

Gentile, a 6’7″ wing who has remained overseas since being selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2014 draft, appeared poised to come stateside this fall, having indicated last month that he expected to join the Rockets for camp. However, according to Carchia, the Rockets offered Gentile a two-way contract and he prefers an Exhibit 10 deal.

An Exhibit 10 contract would allow Gentile to compete for a spot on the Rockets’ 15-man regular season roster, but it could also be converted to a two-way deal by a team before the regular season begins. If Gentile isn’t on board with the idea of becoming one of Houston’s two-way players, he may also be reluctant about agreeing to an Exhibit 10 pact.

For now, the Rockets retain Gentile’s NBA rights — we’ll see if the two sides can come to some agreement one way or the other before the 2018/19 season begins.

Alessandro Gentile Not On Rockets Training Camp Roster

With the Rockets starting training camp on Tuesday, the team released the roster of players participating in camp this season. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter) pointed out that Alessandro Gentile is not on that roster, despite previous expectations and wishes for him to join the team and try to make the jump to the NBA this season. Gentile, who was drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft, has been recovering from hand surgery and will likely have to wait another year in his attempt to make it to the NBA.

Wolves Owner Wants Jimmy Butler Deal Done Soon

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor has taken control of the Jimmy Butler trade talks and wants to get a deal completed as soon as possible, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Tom Thibodeau, who serves as president of basketball operations as well as coach, had been objecting to a deal, hoping to hold onto the veteran forward for another season. However, Taylor wants the process to end before training camp starts Tuesday and has mandated that a deal get done quickly.

Wojnarowski cautions that no team has entered serious discussion with the Wolves yet, but he identifies the Nets, Pistons, Rockets, Clippers, Heat, Sixers and Trail Blazers as franchises that have shown interest.

Taylor plans to review the offers over the next two days, then present the best ones to Butler and his agent, Bernie Lee, to see which teams Butler would be willing to sign a five-year extension with. That information will be used to help finalize a deal, although Wojnarowski adds that some teams would be willing to trade for Butler with no guarantee of an extension .

GM Scott Layden may have jeopardized his job by refusing to talk to other teams about a Butler deal, according to Wojnarowski. Taylor has demanded that Layden start aggressively pursuing a trade, even to the point of contacting rival GMs. Taylor has been considering changes in the front office for months and may re-evaluate Layden’s role once the Butler deal is done.

International Notes: Christon, Nogueira, Llull, Melli

Semaj Christon, who appeared in 64 games for the Thunder during the 2016/17 season, will play in Israel this season, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. Hapoel Be’er Sheva has announced the signing of the 25-year-old point guard, who split last season between China and Puerto Rico.

Christon was part of Oklahoma City’s rotation two seasons ago, averaging 2.9 points and 2.0 assists in about 15 minutes per game. The 55th pick in the 2014 draft, he was waived by the Thunder prior to the start of last season. A former star at Xavier, Christon played in the G League and Italy before coming to Oklahoma City.

Lucas Nogueira‘s contract with Fuenlabrada in Spain has been approved, tweets Varlas Nikos of Eurohoops.net. Nogueira’s former Estudiantes club in Madrid had objected to the signing, claiming it still owned his rights, but the team refused to send documentation to ACB. Nogueira spent four seasons with the Raptors, who paid a $650K buyout to Estudiantes to get his release. Nogueira was with Estudiantes from 2009 to 2014.
Sergio Llull has turned down numerous opportunities to join the Rockets and is now talking about staying with Real Madrid for the rest of his career, relays Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. “It is difficult to say to the NBA because it is an important League,” Llull said in a recent interview with Radio Marca. “But I have said several times that I am happy with Real Madrid. I want to remain here and win again. I would love to finish my career with Real Madrid. I have a contract for a lot of my year. But my goal now is to play a huge season.”
The Jazz, Hawks and Nets all have interest in signing Nicolo Melli for next season, tweets Orazio Cauchi of Sportando. Atlanta and Brooklyn both made contact with him this summer, Cauchi adds.

Rockets’ Brandon Knight Sidelined By Knee Surgery

Newly acquired Rockets guard Brandon Knight recently had “clean up” surgery on his left knee and will miss an unspecified amount of time, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Houston acquired Knight from Phoenix in a four-player trade at the end of August. Knight missed all of last season with a torn ACL and played just 54 and 52 games the prior two years. He wasn’t projected to have a significant role with the Rockets as Chris Paul, James Harden and Eric Gordon fill most of the minutes in the backcourt, so the team can wait for Knight to recover.

Knight will make $14.6MM this season and another $15.6MM in 2019/20.

Zanik, Rosas Receive Second Interviews For Sixers’ Post

Jazz assistant GM Justin Zanik and Rockets VP Gersson Rosas have earned second interviews for the Sixers’ GM opening, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets.

Philadelphia’s ownership group dined with Zanik on Sunday and will do the same with Rosas on Monday. The ownership group will also hold second interviews with internal candidates on Thursday and Friday, Pompey adds in another tweet. The news was confirmed by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).

Warriors assistant GM and director of player personnel Larry Harris was also recently interviewed for the vacancy, though there’s no indication if he’ll receive another interview.

Some of the internal candidates for the job who were reportedly interviewed this month include former Sixers player Elton Brand, Marc Eversley, Ned Cohen and Alex Rucker.

The organization has been operating without a GM since Bryan Colangelo departed in June amid charges of releasing sensitive information on Twitter.

The Sixers initially targeted big-name NBA GMs and presidents like Rockets GM Daryl Morey, but have since cast a wider net, focusing more on executives who would view the Philadelphia job as a promotion rather than a lateral move.

Associate Head Coach Jeff Bzledik Retires

The Rockets will be without the services of associate head coach Jeff Bzdelik this season, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets. The mind behind Houston’s defensive improvement has decided to retire at the age of 65.

Wojnarowski adds that the departure, less than 10 days before training camp opens, will put the Rockets on their heels and many of Bzdelik’s responsibilities will be spread over the remaining staff.

A number of NBA players will enter the 2018/19 campaign with trade kickers built into their contracts, so be sure to check out our list of those included. Among the 18 noted are Spurs big man LaMarcus Aldridge, Rockets star James Harden and Mavs forward Harrison Barnes.

G League's Matt Brase To Join Big League Staff

The Rockets will add former Rio Grande Valley Vipers coach Matt Brase to head coach Mike D’Antoni‘s staff this season, Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle tweets. Joseph Blair is a favorite to replace Brase in the G League.
A city prosecutor is reviewing an allegation against James Harden, an Associated Press report states. The Rockets star allegedly grabbed a woman’s wrist and threw her cellphone on the roof outside of a nightclub when she was recording a fight.

Rockets Notes: Morey, Knight, Chriss, Ceiling

GM Daryl Morey believes both Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss will fit nicely into the Rockets‘ system, as Mark Berman of Fox26 passes along via Twitter.

“Typical kind of transaction we try to do. They can be optimized in our system with Coach [Mike] D’Antoni,” Morey said of the two incoming players. We wrote about how Chriss could give the franchise a major piece to use on the trade market earlier today.

Morey was in the Bahamas to see the many of the Rockets‘ players work out together, Berman adds in a separate tweet. “I was super-impressed…I think it’s really critical. The players put it all together themselves,” Morey said.
Some on the Rockets believe the team is better this season than the 65-win juggernaut that made it to the Western Conference Finals, Morey tells Berman (separate tweet). “Mike’s the most confident of all, which I love. Usually coaches are sandbagging, but Mike feels like we’ve got a better team this year that last year. So we’re very excited,” Morey said.
The Rockets sit at No. 3 in ESPN’s Future Power Rankings, an index led by Bobby Marks and Kevin Pelton projecting how NBA teams will fare over the next three years. Houston has the second-best roster on the scribe’s rankings, though the team’s age and looming tax concerns may put a ceiling on what it can accomplish over the next three seasons.

Rockets In Position To Make Another Move

The Rockets set a franchise record for most wins in a season with 65 victories last year. The team didn’t take home a coveted NBA championship but GM Daryl Morey believes no matter what pinnacles a franchise reaches, there’s always room to improve.

“When you’re trying to win a title, there’s always fine-tuning, you can always get better,” Morey said (via Mark Berman of Fox 26 on Twitter).

Morey hinted that he wouldn’t hesitate to make a major move should a worthwhile opportunity present itself. “We have all of our draft picks going forward. If something presents itself that allows us to make a trade to improve the team we’re not going to hesitate to do that,” Morey explained.

Houston lost Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute in free agency, though they were able to add Carmelo Anthony and Michael Carter-Williams.

The team also traded away Ryan Anderson, bringing in a former top-10 pick in Marquese Chriss. Chriss, who plateaued during his sophomore campaign with the Suns, is far from a finished product. However, the Rockets should be able to provide him with a better situation to develop, as he’ll be playing alongside established All-Stars and veterans as opposed to a team full of young talent and past-their-prime players.

Should Chriss improve, Morey will have another top trade asset in his arsenal and Houston could be in a position to add a real piece on the trade market.

Chriss, who is owed $3.2MM this season and has a team option on his deal for the 2019/20 season, can be dealt by the team right away, just not in a deal that aggregates his salary with another player. Those restrictions are removed two months after a trade, meaning when the calendar turns to November, Morey can attach Chriss to other players in a trade that brings back a larger salary.

There haven’t been any reports of Chriss being a trade candidate this season, though as we’ve seen with Morey, the wheels are always turning. It’s hard not to see the path that improves Chriss’ trade value early in the season and puts the Rockets in a place where they can yet again be major players on the trade market.
