FIBA World Cup Notes: Barrett, Drummond, Adebayo

RJ Barrett will not participate in the 2019 FIBA World Cup for Canada due to a mild calf strain, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets. The most recent No. 3 overall pick will join Team Canada for training camp and team activities in Toronto. Barrett represented his country over the last four summers and helped the squad qualify for the World Cup.

There’s also Team USA news. Here is the latest, via USA Basketball’s website:

Former First-Round Pick Rashad Vaughn Will Play Overseas

Rashad Vaughn will play for the professional Bosnian club Igokea next season, according to the team’s website. It was previously reported that the shooting guard was leaning toward making this move. Full details have yet to be reported, though it is likely a one-year deal.

Vaughn was drafted with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Bucks. During the 2017/18 campaign, he was inserted into a trade to the Nets for Tyler Zeller. Days later, he was sent to New Orleans for Dante Cunningham and was subsequently waived.

Since being drafted out of Nevada, Vaughn has spent time in the G League. The 22-year-old also had a pair of 10-day deals with the Magic during the 2017/18 campaign and he inked an Exhibit 10 contract with the Mavs prior to last season.

Nik Stauskas To Play In Spain

Former lottery pick Nik Stauskas will play in Spain next season. The shooting guard signed a deal with Baskonia, as the team announced on its website. It was recently reported that the 25-year-old was considering the Spanish club.

Stauskas was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2014 draft, spending just one year with the Kings before Sacramento dealt him, along with Carl Landry and Jason Thompson to the Sixers in order to clear cap space (the team surrender the No. 14 overall pick in the 2019 as part of the deal).

The former Michigan Wolverine played in Philadelphia for slightly over two seasons, with the Sixers trading him to the Nets early in the 2017/18 campaign.

Stauskas split time between Portland and Cleveland last season and arguably had a better half of the year with the CavsDuring his time in Ohio, he knocked down 42.9% of his shots from behind the arc on 2.6 attempts per game. However, that showing apparently wasn’t enough to earn him a favorable NBA offer.

Ron Baker Signs With EuroLeague Defending Champions CSKA Moscow

Former Knicks point guard Ron Baker is headed to CSKA Moscow, according to the Russian team’s website. It will be a one-year deal.

“I’m excited for this new opportunity CSKA Basketball has given me. I’m very thankful! After speaking with head coach Dimitris and team captain Kyle Hines, I see myself fitting in with what CSKA is about,” Baker said in a statement. “Their day-to-day culture and achievements on the court were what I was looking for in a franchise during this summer free agency. I’m extremely grateful and most of all ready to compete for the fans of CSKA!”

Nikos Varlas of EuroHoops first had the scoop on the interest between Baker and the defending EuroLeague champs, tweeting that Baker’s decision was deciding between CSKA and the Nets, which would have been on a two-way deal.

Brooklyn currently has Henry Ellenson on a two-way contract, with the other spot open. Second-rounder Jaylen Hands is considered the most likely candidate for that second slot, but perhaps the Nets would’ve been willing to offer it to Baker.

After entering the NBA as an undrafted free agent with the Knicks in 2016, Baker spent parts of three seasons with the club before latching on the Wizards briefly last season. He averaged 3.1 PPG and 1.8 APG in 96 total regular season games (14.5 MPG).

Kosta Koufos also signed with CSKA Moscow earlier this offseason.

And-Ones: Acy, Stauskas, Lin, Retooling

Veteran NBA big man Quincy Acy, who has appeared in 337 total regular season games for the Raptors, Kings, Knicks, Mavericks, Nets, and Suns since 2012, has officially signed with Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv, according to a press release.

“I’m excited to put on the Maccabi jersey, to bring passion, grit, and energy every game as we fight to win and bring success.” Acy said in a statement. “I’m ready to get going, ready to get some wins. I’m ready to come to Tel Aviv with my family and join the fan base.”

Acy, 28, last played in the NBA with the Suns during the 2018/19 season, appearing in 10 games for the team over the course of two 10-day contracts.

Here’s more from around the basketball world:

  • After reporting earlier in the week that former lottery pick Nik Stauskas has turned down offers from EuroLeague teams, Lithuanian journalist Donatas Urbonas tweets that Spanish club Baskonia now looks like the most likely destination for the free agent guard. No deal is done yet, however.
  • In the wake of Jeremy Lin‘s emotional comments about how he feels as if the NBA has given up on him, Doug Smith of The Toronto Star puts the point guard’s free agency in context, pointing out that there’s still plenty of time for Lin to catch on with an NBA team. Even if he doesn’t, Lin has a successful career under his belt, says Smith.
  • Given the success that teams like the Clippers and Jazz have had retooling their respective rosters rather than going through an all-out rebuild, Matt John of Basketball Insiders wonders if more lottery-bound clubs will follow that example and look to turn things around quickly rather than resigning themselves to several years of losing seasons.

Latest On Carmelo Anthony

Appearing recently on “The Breakfast Club,” Carmelo Anthony‘s trainer Chris Brickley said that Anthony is still hoping to sign with an NBA team and is being realistic about what sort of role he could play, as Jack Maloney of CBS Sports relays.

“I think teams are afraid of, ‘I want to be the star,’ or ‘I want this.’ That’s not the case, though,” Brickley said. “‘Melo just wants to have a final season, farewell season, do what D-Wade did. Do the jersey swap. He had a great career, he’s a Hall-of-Famer. So hopefully that can happen.”

While Brickley’s comments were well-meaning, they could open up Anthony to unfair ridicule, according to Frank Isola of The Athletic, who says that Carmelo would be better served by speaking for himself. The 10-time All-Star should also be focusing on ways he can help a contending team rather than a farewell tour, Isola adds.

“Can he still play? That’s what teams want to know,” an NBA coach whose team had internal discussions about pursuing Anthony told Isola. “It can’t be about a farewell tour.”

The question of whether Anthony can add value to a playoff team is on the mind of various team executives, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. As Charania explains, those execs want to know if the 35-year-old would be willing to accept a role where he sits on some nights and thrives in other games, based on matchups.

“‘Melo could fill a spot on most second units, but what kind of role works for both sides?” one executive said to Charania.

Charania’s look at Anthony’s future includes several more interesting tidbits, so let’s round up up the highlights…

  • If the Knicks had landed two star free agents this summer, they would have considered bringing back Anthony, league sources tell Charania. Now that the team has gone in a different direction, that no longer looks like a viable option. However, some executives believe that if Anthony doesn’t find another NBA home, he could sign a one-day contract to retire as a Knick.
  • The Lakers are the only other team that currently looks like a potential suitor for Anthony, due to his friendship with LeBron James, but that’s viewed as an unlikely scenario, given the team’s depth at forward and on the wing. The presence of Kurt Rambis in the front office may be a factor as well — Charania notes that Rambis was with the Knicks during Anthony’s final “tumultuous” stretch in New York.
  • Anthony’s camp had conversation with USA Basketball about Carmelo being part of Team USA’s World Cup squad in 2019. Both sides ultimately decided not to go in that direction though, says Charania.
  • Last season, a team in the Chinese Basketball Association was prepared to offer Anthony a deal that would have paid him nearly $1MM for several weeks of work, a source tells Charania. However, those discussions never gained traction and multiple agents who do deals with clubs in China are skeptical that Anthony would go that route, Charania writes. If he were interested in playing in the CBA, Anthony would likely receive lucrative offers.

Timofey Mozgov Rejoins Russian Club Khimki

Veteran NBA center Timofey Mozgov is returning to his home country and rejoining his old Russian team after being released by the Magic earlier this month. Khimki made an announcement today officially confirming that the club has a one-year deal in place with Mozgov for the upcoming season.

Mozgov, 33, spent eight seasons in the NBA from 2010-18, appearing in 454 total regular season games for the Knicks, Nuggets, Cavaliers, Lakers, and Nets. During that time, he averaged 6.8 PPG and 4.9 RPG in 18.0 minutes per contest, winning a title with Cleveland in 2016.

Having been traded from Brooklyn to Charlotte to Orlando during the 2018 offseason, Mozgov was technically a member of the Magic during the 2018/19 season, but he didn’t appear in a single game for the club due to a right knee injury.

Orlando waived Mozgov in early July despite the fact that he still has one year and $16.7MM left on his contract — stretching his cap hit for ’19/20 allowed the team to remain under the luxury tax line.

For Mozgov, it will be his third stint with Khimki. He also played for the EuroLeague squad from 2006-10, then again in 2011 during the NBA lockout. The big man is the second player to move from an NBA team to Khimki so far this offseason — Dairis Bertans also lined up a deal with the club after being released by the Pelicans.

Johnathan Williams To Play In Israel

Former Lakers two-way player Johnathan Williams is headed overseas to continue his playing career. Israeli team Maccabi Rishon announced today (via Twitter) that it has signed Williams to a contract for the 2019/20 season.

After going undrafted out of Gonzaga last spring, Williams spent the 2018/19 season on a two-way deal with the Lakers, spending most of his time with the South Bay Lakers in the G League. The young forward/center averaged 15.3 PPG and 8.4 RPG in 36 NBAGL contests (27.3 MPG).

Williams also saw some playing time in the Lakers’ frontcourt near the start and end of the season. He appeared in 24 games for the NBA club, posting averages of 6.5 PPG and 4.1 RPG in 15.5 minutes per contest.

The Lakers initially tendered Williams a two-way qualifying offer, but withdrew it and renounced his rights early in the free agent period, making him an unrestricted free agent. Zach Norvell Jr. and Kostas Antetokounmpo are now L.A.’s two-way players.

International Rumors: Lin, Stauskas, Vaughn, Colson, Acy

Although he recently expressed frustration about how his free agency has played out, veteran point guard Jeremy Lin doesn’t appear ready to give up on seeking an NBA deal for the 2019/20 season.

A source tells Emiliano Carchia of Sportando that talks between Lin and EuroLeague powerhouse CSKA Moscow have broken down, with the 30-year-old turning down the Russian club’s interest. Lin remains interested in playing in the NBA rather than heading to Europe, according to Carchia.

Another free agent NBA guard, Nik Stauskas, is also resisting a move to Europe, according to Lithuanian journalist Donatas Urbonas. Urbonas tweets that Stauskas has received offers from Russian and EuroLeague teams, but has rejected them. The former eighth overall pick finished the 2018/19 season with the Cavaliers, but is currently an unrestricted free agent.

Here are a few more notes and updates on players being courted by non-NBA teams from around the world:

  • Former first-round pick Rashad Vaughn is leaning toward accepting an offer made by Bosnian team Igokea, a source tells Carchia. The NBA journeyman, who played for Milwaukee, Brooklyn, and Orlando from 2015-18, spent the 2018/19 season in the G League.
  • Bonzie Colson‘s rumored deal with Turkish team Darussafaka is now official, agent Misko Raznatovic tweeted this morning. Colson finished the 2018/19 campaign on a two-way contract with the Bucks, but was recently waived by Milwaukee.
  • Israeli and EuroLeague club Maccabi Tel Aviv is eyeing NBA big man Quincy Acy, a source tells Carchia. Acy has logged 337 career NBA regular season appearances, but saw action in just 10 games in 2018/19 when he signed a pair of 10-day contracts with the Suns.

Mitch Creek Headed Back To Australia

Swingman Mitch Creek, who finished last season with the Timberwolves, will return to Australia next season and play for South East Melbourne Phoenix, according to a post on the Melbourne team’s website.

The Australian team will be making its franchise debut in the country’s National Basketball League this year.

“Mitch was the club’s first signing,” head coach Simon Mitchell said.

Creek signed a standard contract to finish out last season with Minnesota after his 10-day contract expired in April. He also had a pair of 10-day contracts with the Nets last season.

He scored six points in 12 minutes in his lone appearance with the Timberwolves. He played in four games with Brooklyn, averaging 3.8 PPG and 2.5 RPG in 9.0 MPG.

He appeared in seven summer league games at Las Vegas for the Timberwolves earlier this month. He averaged 11.1 PPG and 4.3 RPG in 25.7 MPG.

“I did everything humanly possible to make my NBA dream come true and have no regrets,” Creek said.

Creek led Adelaide to the 2017-18 NBL Grand Final series against Melbourne United and was the leading rebounder in the series with 8.7 RPG.
