Magic Second-Rounder Out For The Season

Justin Jackson, a second-round pick by Orlando who is spending the year with the Lakeland Magic on a G League contract, has suffered a season-ending injury, according to a tweet from the Lakeland team.

The Magic weren’t specific about exactly what happened to Jackson, but he had a torn labrum when he played at Maryland that forced him to miss much of the 2017/18 season and kept him out of summer league action. Jackson averaged 4.5 PPG and 3.8 RPG in 10 games while shooting 34% from the floor in his first G League season.

Orlando picked up Jackson’s rights in a draft-night trade with the Nuggets, moving down from No. 41 to No. 43 and acquiring a 2019 second-round pick in the deal.

Southeast Notes: Lin, Wizards, Magic, Plumlee

It sounds like interest around the NBA in Hawks point guard Jeremy Lin is picking up, according to Keith Smith of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). After missing most of the last two seasons in Brooklyn due to injuries, Lin is averaging 10.9 PPG and 3.6 APG with an efficient .502/.380/.821 in the final year of his contract.

Lin’s salary is fairly sizable ($13.77MM), but given the lack of clear-cut sellers around the league, as well as the number of teams that could use one more play-maker, he could be a sought-after trade chip. Smith speculates that the Hawks should be able to secure a “decent asset” – albeit nothing “amazing” – in return for Lin if they move him by February 7.

Here’s more from around the Southeast:

  • After waiving Ron Baker earlier this week, the Wizards now have two open spots on their 15-man roster and will need to fill at least one of those two openings soon. Head coach Scott Brooks said on Tuesday that the club is exploring its options, with power forward and point guard among the positions that could be fortified (Twitter link via Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington).
  • Point guard remains the most problematic spot for the Magic, as Josh Robbins of The Athletic details. While Orlando hasn’t fallen out of the playoff race in the East yet, the club may require a trade in order to fortify its bench and avoid slipping from contention, writes Robbins. It remains to be seen whether the Magic will be buyers or sellers at the deadline.
  • The Lakeland Magic have waived forward Justin Jackson, the team announced today (via Twitter). While Orlando’s G League affiliate will no longer carry the Maryland product, who suffered a season-ending injury, the Magic still hold the NBA rights for Jackson, the 43rd pick in the 2018 draft.
    • [UPDATE: Lakeland has since deleted its tweet announcing the release of Jackson. It’s not clear what this means for his spot on the roster.
  • Hawks big man Miles Plumlee, who underwent a non-surgical procedure on his left knee in December, underwent another procedure on that same knee this week, per a press release from the team. The Hawks say Plumlee will be re-evaluated in about two weeks, while Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets that the procedure was a PRP-like injection.

Teams Now Allowed To Sign Players To 10-Day Contracts

Teams looking to fill roster spots temporarily are now allowed to add to on 10-day contracts. As noted by ESPN’s Bobby Marks, salaries for 10-day deals are based on a player’s years of service and will be either 10 days or three games, whichever is longer.

[RELATED: Hoops Rumors Glossary: 10-Day Contracts]

Current teams with open roster spots include the Warriors, Hornets, Pacers, Grizzlies, Heat, Thunder, Sixers, Suns, Raptors and Wizards. Teams are permitted to sign a player to two 10-day pacts, then would have to sign him for the remainder of the season or let him go after the second one expires.

As Keith Smith of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link) notes, luxury tax restrictions may dissaude the Warriors, Heat, Thunder, Raptors, and Wizards from adding a 10-day player. Also, given Monday’s deadline to waive players before salaries become guaranteed, we examined five notable non-guaranteed contract situations that are worthy of monitoring. On Jan. 10, all standard contracts become fully guaranteed.

Additionally, Jan. 15 is the last day teams can sign players to two-way contracts. As it stands, the Celtics, Nets, Knicks and Trail Blazers (two slots) are the only teams with the ability to add two-way players. You can keep track of all two-way deals with our tracker.

As Marks notes, since half the teams with open spots are in the luxury tax and many clubs still have NBA days available for their two-way players, this year’s market for 10-day contracts may be a quiet one.

And-Ones: Trade Deadline, Goodwin, Watson, Williams

There probably won’t be significant activity prior to the trade deadline, according to Keith Smith of RealGM (Twitter links). The biggest trades this season may have already occurred, one source told Smith, because teams are intent on preserving salary-cap space for 2019. Still, some expiring contracts could be moved and there’s always a possibility that a team “might get desperate” and do something bold, the same source suggested.

A front-office member from another team believes many of the trades coming before the deadline could be motivated by trying to stay below the luxury-tax line, even if it results in a talent downgrade. However, that executive also believes that there should be more sellers in a month than there are now. “Some of us will get real about our chances and start moving guys,” the source said to Smith.

We have more from around the basketball world:

The shooting guard played his first three seasons with Phoenix. The Red Claws acquired his returning player rights in a trade prior to the season. Goodwin lost his roster spot with China’s Zhejiang Golden Bulls to former Spurs guard Brandon Paul in late December.
  • Lakers guard and former UCLA star Lonzo Ball has endorsed former Suns coach Earl Watson to be the Bruins’ next coach, Tania Ganguli and Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times report. UCLA recently fired Steve Alford and replaced him on an interim basis with assistant Murry Bartow. “I know Earl personally,” Ball said. “I think he has coaching experience in the league. Obviously, he went there, he’s alumni, so I think he’s a good fit.”
  • Veteran big man Alan Williams is in advanced talks with China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. Williams was waived by the Nets this week to allow him to pursue the overseas opportunity. He was on a two-way deal after getting released by the Suns during the offseason. Williams was playing well in the G League but did not make an appearance with Brooklyn.
  • Forward Okaro White, who was waived by the Wizards last month, has signed with the G League’s Long Island Nets, according to NetsDaily.com. Long Island acquired his G League rights last year.
