Iverson Declines Offer From Venezuela

12:35pm: Guaros de Lara GM Tomas Morris says that Iverson has declined the offer from the club, though the door remains open to a deal happening, tweets Francisco Vega of Latinbasket.com.  Sources tell Vega (via Twitter) that Guaros de Lara's offer was worth twice as much as the offer from Puerto Rico.

11:13am: Venezuelan club Guaros de Lara reached agreement on a deal with guard Allen Iverson, Venezuelan sources tell Sportando.  The pact will likely be announced at some point today.

Iverson was said to be deciding between the offer from Guaros de Lara and Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez.  The eleven-time All-Star also had conversations with the Lakers but the deal would have required the 36-year-old to spend time in the D-League.

Free Agent Rumors: Iverson, Przybilla, Taylor

J.R. Smith's potential deal with the Knicks is the biggest free agent story of the day, but there are plenty of players out there hoping to land contracts of their own. Let's round up a few of the day's free agent updates….

  • Allen Iverson is still drawing international interest, though there are conflicting reports on whether A.I. has received official contract offers. According to Sportando, Iverson has offers on the table from Puerto Rican and Venezuelan teams, but ESPN.com's Chris Broussard hears no formal offers have been extended so far. Broussard says Iverson would sign in the Caribbean, South America, or even the D-League, if it could lead to another shot at the NBA.
  • Both Iverson reports agree that the next week will be crucial. According to Broussard's source, Iverson will "accept that his forced retirement is permanent" if he hasn't signed by the All-Star break.
  • Some teams are backing off of Joel Przybilla, concerned that he's not fully healthy, tweets Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports Florida. Przybilla was thought to be deciding between the Heat and Bulls, but perhaps those clubs are wary of extending formal offers.
  • Jermaine Taylor, who appeared in 34 games for the Kings and Rockets last season, has signed with the D-League, according to Scott Schroeder of Ridiculous Upside. Perhaps Taylor's time in the D-League will be short-lived though — Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld says (via Twitter) the Suns will work out Taylor today, while Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports tweets that the 25-year-old will work out for the Clippers tomorrow..

Latest On Allen Iverson

While the Lakers reportedly had some level of interest in Allen Iverson, it appears the 11-time All-Star could be headed out of the country rather than to an NBA roster. According to Primera Hora (via Sportando), Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez is close to offering a contract to Iverson, who has also received offers from Venezuela, Iran, and the Philippines.

We heard last week that Iverson was drawing interest from the Venezuelan and Puerto Rican professional basketball leagues, and that Venezuela's Guaros de Lara had made him a formal offer. Indios de Mayaguez is waiting to determine the availability of one or two of the team's other players before deciding whether to extend an offer to Iverson, according to manager Luis Vargas.

Lakers Notes: Iverson, Alston, Fisher

Currently in second place in the Pacific Division, the Lakers are 2-3 on their six-game, 10-day Grammy road trip. Ever since the Grammy Award ceremonies started being held at the Staples Center in 2004, the Lakers have been forced to take a lengthy road trip at this point of the season each year. Here's a look at some Lakers-related items as the team heads to Toronto this afternoon to conclude their road trip against the Raptors.

  • ESPN's Stephen A. Smith says there was conversation between Allen Iverson and the Lakers about a possible contract offer. Terms of the deal would have required Iverson, 36, to spend time in the NBA Developmental League before joining the Lakers. Smith suggests signing Iverson would be a mistake given the fact that he is simply not a point guard.
  • Rafer Alston, more of a true point guard than Iverson, was recently signed to the Los Angeles D-Fenders, the Lakers' NBA Developmental League affiliate. Smith contends Alston and the Lakers have talked about promoting the 35-year-old former Rockets guard to the parent club at some point in the future. There is no timeline in place for the move, however.
  • Patrick Ewing points to Derek Fisher's NBA lockout duties as a cause for his poor performance thus far this season, says Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News. Ewing speaks from experience as he previously served as the president of the Players Association and believe his Achilles problems during the '98/'99 season stemmed from spending too much time talking and not enough time working out. Fisher, 37, is currently averaging 5.2 PPG, his lowest output since his rookie year.

Iverson Drawing Interest From Venezuela, PR

SATURDAY, 8:52am: Today could be the crucial day in negotiations for Iverson, according to a  report from Sportando.  Venezuela's Guaros de Lara and Puerto Rico's Indios de Mayaguez are in competition for the former All-Star's services, with the Venezuelan team having made an offer.

THURSDAY, 12:56pm: Iverson may be heading to Venezuela rather than Puerto Rico, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando, who says Venezuela's Guaros de Lara made Iverson an offer (Twitter links). A decision could be made within the next 24 hours.

WEDNESDAY, 12:06pm: According to a Sportando report, Mets de Guaynabo of the Puerto Rican league turned down a proposal that would have brought Iverson to the team for the maximum salary allowed ($5,000 per week). However, other Puerto Rican teams, including Indios de Mayaguez, maintain interest in signing Iverson.

MONDAY, 2:32pm: NBA teams may not be fighting for Allen Iverson's services these days, but non-NBA clubs are still showing interest in the longtime 76ers star. Iverson has engaged in discussions with Puerto Rico's professional basketball league about a possible deal, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

According to Wojnarowski, the league's commissioner is attempting to sell Puerto Rico to Iverson as a way of working his way back to the NBA. The league hopes to convince Iverson to fly down to take a closer look at the possibility of playing on the island.

Iverson has been out of the NBA since he appeared in 28 games for the Grizzlies and Sixers in 2009/10. After playing in Turkey in 2010/11, the 36-year-old returned to America and has been working out in hopes of making an NBA comeback. A former MVP and 11-time All-Star, Iverson ranks 17th on the Association's all-time scoring list.

Odds & Ends: Iverson, Lin, Green, Kaman, Heat
