Amile Jefferson – Hoops Rumors https://www.hoopsrumors.com Legitimate NBA free agent and trade rumors. Fri, 20 Dec 2024 17:31:59 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Celtics Notes: Mazzulla, Brown, Springer, Horford https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2024/12/celtics-notes-mazzulla-brown-springer-horford.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2024/12/celtics-notes-mazzulla-brown-springer-horford.html#respond Fri, 20 Dec 2024 16:05:48 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=413523 Head coach Joe Mazzulla had to be restrained from approaching official Justin Van Duyne after the Celtics lost to Chicago on Thursday night, writes Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe. Mazzulla was angry about being whistled for a technical foul for coming onto the court after a jump ball was called following a loose-ball battle between Payton Pritchard and Ayo Dosunmu. Although Mazzulla was upset in the moment, he admitted to reporters after the game that the technical was justified.

“I just can’t be on the court,” he said. “The ref had to do his job. I was on the court.”

Jaylen Brown, who also received a technical during the exchange, provided a little more insight, Washburn adds. Brown told Van Duyne that he T’d up Mazzulla for no reason and alleges that the official told him not to say that again or he would get a technical of his own. When Brown repeated his comment, Van Duyne obliged.

“You can’t threaten guys with a technical foul,” Brown said. “That’s not part of the game either. You want to fine people for gestures and all this stuff, [then] fine that. We were down three at that time and that led to us being down eight. That affects the game. That could have been avoided. Joe didn’t say anything to deserve a tech.”

There’s more from Boston:

  • Brown’s mother and assistant coach Amile Jefferson both had their homes broken into this week, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. Jefferson was with the Celtics in Washington when burglars struck his house on Monday, but Mechalle Brown was at home when she was targeted on Sunday. “We’re all right,” Jaylen Brown said. “We’ll deal with situations accordingly. Thank God nothing serious or physical or threatening happened, but the fact that it could have kind of lingers in your mind.” The NBA issued a statement saying that it is “deeply concerned” about burglaries in the Boston area, and its security representatives have contacted the Celtics and local law enforcement.
  • With Sam Hauser unavailable on Thursday, Jaden Springer got a rare opportunity for extended playing time, notes Souichi Terada of MassLive. Springer had four rebounds and missed both his shots in 13 minutes, marking the first time this season he’s played outside of the fourth quarter. Mazzulla said matchups were behind his decision to keep Springer on the court so long. “Just match the speed that (the Bulls) play with overall,” Mazzulla said. “I thought he does a good job on the offensive glass and his individual defense and just kind of wanted to match the speed there. I thought he played well.” Terada adds that Springer has already been involved in trade rumors and that his $4.2MM expiring contract could be useful in any Celtics deal.
  • Al Horford believes that becoming a three-point threat has extended his career, Terada states in a separate story. Horford only attempted 65 total shots from beyond the arc during his first eight NBA seasons, but he has evolved as the game has changed. “For me, physically, it has added years to my career, I feel like,” Horford said. “It’s been good for me, and I think Brook (Lopez) saw it as well, and it’s been a great benefit. And that’s what I was mentioning, that now, like the guys are coming in from college, and they’re already shooting it, and they’re confident, they’re giving them the green light, and it’s a good thing.”

Celtics Notes: J. Brown, Jefferson, G. Williams, Banton, Madar https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/07/celtics-notes-j-brown-jefferson-g-williams-banton-madar.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/07/celtics-notes-j-brown-jefferson-g-williams-banton-madar.html#comments Wed, 12 Jul 2023 21:00:34 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=354592 A fifth-year player option and a trade kicker could be among the contract details being haggled over as the Celtics and Jaylen Brown continue to negotiate a potential super-max extension, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe and Brian Robb of MassLive.com.

Given that Brown has been the subject of frequent trade speculation in recent years and might be the odd man out down the road if the Celtics want to shake up their roster and/or reduce their payroll, the possible inclusion of a trade kicker could be a key point of contention for both sides, Robb speculates.

According to Himmelsbach, the Celtics and Brown’s camp continued to talk over the weekend and into this week, and league sources remain confident that an extension will be completed sooner or later, but one source told The Globe that “there is work to be done” still.

Here’s more on the Celtics:

  • In a separate story for The Boston Globe, Himmelsbach looks at the friendship between former Duke teammates Jayson Tatum and Amile Jefferson, who is joining the Celtics’ coaching staff as an assistant for the 2023/24 season.
  • Grant Williams, whose sign-and-trade to Dallas was finalized on Wednesday, spoke to Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports about leaving the Celtics, referring to it as a situation where “both sides just did what’s best for each.”
  • Dalano Banton, who said he’s excited to be joining a “championship organization,” wasn’t able to play in the Celtics’ first two Summer League games in Las Vegas due to a minor injury, according to Souchi Terada of MassLive.com. However, Banton apparently plans to play in Wednesday’s game. His two-year deal with Boston isn’t yet official but will presumably be finalized shortly.
  • Celtics draft-and-stash prospect Yam Madar, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft, has signed with Turkish club Fenerbahce, per a press release from the team. It’s a two-year deal with a third-year option, though it may include NBA outs.
  • In case you missed it, the Celtics officially signed Kristaps Porzingis to his two-year extension on Wednesday.

Celtics Rumors: Pritchard, Draft, G. Williams, Beal, Jefferson https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/06/celtics-rumors-pritchard-draft-g-williams-beal-jefferson.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/06/celtics-rumors-pritchard-draft-g-williams-beal-jefferson.html#comments Wed, 21 Jun 2023 23:35:37 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=350103 The Celtics have been weighing the possibility of trading Payton Pritchard to try to move into the first round of the 2023 NBA draft, reports Sean Deveney of Heavy.com. Boston doesn’t currently control a first-round pick.

A couple of possible targets could be Marquette wing Olivier-Maxence Prosper and UCLA wing Jaime Jaquez, according to Deveney.

Great organization, great history. I had a really good time there,” Prosper said of his workout with the Celtics.

However, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports suggests (via Twitter) that a potential package deal involving Pritchard and the No. 35 pick might be shelved if the team is able to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from Washington, with Malcolm Brogdon possibly heading to the Clippers and Danilo Gallinari being sent to the Wizards. Losing Brogdon would obviously affect Boston’s backcourt depth and would seemingly open up playing time for Pritchard.

Here are a few more rumors and notes on the Celtics:

  • Multiple league sources tell Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe that if the Celtics do land Porzingis, there’s a good chance Grant Williams may be headed to a new team (Twitter link). As Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype tweets, adding Porzingis’ $36MM contract for 2023/24 would push the club close to the second tax apron, and releasing Williams’ cap hold (along with several others) would give Boston access to the taxpayer mid-level exception. Re-signing Williams would push the Celtics past the second apron.
  • Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston explains why the Celtics weren’t in on the Bradley Beal sweepstakes despite the three-time All-Star’s close ties to Jayson Tatum. Aside from his massive contract and full no-trade clause, which have to be highlighted when talking about a taxpayer like Boston, the Celtics are focused on rebalancing the roster by adding size at other positions rather than acquiring another guard, Forsberg writes.
  • Former NBA big man Amile Jefferson, who was an assistant coach with Duke in ’22/23, is finalizing a multiyear contract to join the Celtics as an assistant, a source tells Travis Branham of 247Sports.com. Jefferson played 30 games with the Magic from 2018-20.

And-Ones: Jefferson, Somacescu, Musa, FAs By Position https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/07/and-ones-jefferson-somacescu-musa-fas-by-position.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/07/and-ones-jefferson-somacescu-musa-fas-by-position.html#comments Wed, 21 Jul 2021 18:29:37 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=242886 Veteran power forward Amile Jefferson, who appeared in 30 games for the Magic between 2018-20 and was in camp with the Celtics last December, has returned to his alma mater and will be part of the Duke staff going forward. The Blue Devils announced today in a press release that Jefferson has been named the director of player development for the men’s basketball team.

“This is an honor to be back at Duke and I’m so grateful to Coach (Mike) Krzyzewski for considering me for this opportunity,” Jefferson said in a statement. “I’d also like to thank Coach (Jon) Scheyer for his help through the process and look forward to his leadership in the future. Duke has been a part of my story and my life and it’s a privilege to give back to the program and the University that has meant so much. I can’t wait to work with these guys — helping them develop, grow and learn — and be a small part of something bigger than myself.”

In addition to playing in the NBA and the G League since going pro in 2017, Jefferson – who won a title with Duke in ’15 – has spent some time overseas, playing for Turkish team Galatasaray in 2020/21. It’s unclear if the 28-year-old will look to resume his playing career at some point or if he’s prepared to transition to coaching full-time.

Here are more odds and ends from around the basketball world:

  • Up-and-coming Romanian-born point guard Tudor Somacescu, who turned 16 in June, became the 12th player to sign with the Overtime Elite league, as Jonathan Givony of ESPN writes. Somacescu is the youngest player to sign with Overtime Elite to date, per Givony.
  • Dzanan Musa, a first-round pick in 2018, has joined Spanish team CB Breogan, according to agent Misko Raznatovic. Musa appeared in 49 across two seasons with Brooklyn before being traded to Detroit last November. The Pistons waived him a month later and he spent most of the 2020/21 season with Anadolu Efes.
  • Point guard looks like the strongest position in this year’s free agent class, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic, who writes that as many as 10 starting-caliber players could be available on the open market. Based on Hollinger’s system, Dennis Schröder barely cracks the top-10 list of free agent point guards, while Derrick Rose comes in at No. 11.
  • In two more stories for The Athletic, Hollinger also previewed this year’s crop of free agent shooting guards and small forwards. There are no elite shooting guards available, but the class includes several reliable rotation options. At small forward, despite his injury, Kawhi Leonard easily headlines a group that doesn’t include a ton of surefire starters.

Amile Jefferson Signs With Turkish Team https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/amile-jefferson-signs-with-turkish-team.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/amile-jefferson-signs-with-turkish-team.html#comments Tue, 29 Dec 2020 14:37:59 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=197427 Free agent power forward Amile Jefferson has signed with Galatasaray, the Turkish club announced today in a press release. The contract will cover the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

Jefferson, 27, spent part of the 2017/18 season on a two-way contract with the Timberwolves after going undrafted out of Duke. He subsequently signed a two-way deal with the Magic for the ’18/19 season and then was promoted to Orlando’s standard roster at the start of the ’19/20 campaign before being waived in February.

Despite spending parts of three seasons on NBA rosters, Jefferson has seen limited playing time, averaging 1.4 PPG and 1.5 RPG in 30 total games (4.7 MPG). He has thrived at the G League level, however, recording 18.5 PPG, 12.2 RPG, and 2.9 APG in 88 NBAGL contests (34.2 MPG) for the Iowa Wolves and Lakeland Magic.

Jefferson was with the Celtics during the preseason after signing an Exhibit 10 contract, but was waived 10 days ago when the club set its regular season roster. He’ll look to help jump-start a Galatasaray squad that is off to a slow start this season, with a 5-9 record in Turkish League play.

Celtics Waive Amile Jefferson https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/celtics-to-waive-amile-jefferson.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/celtics-to-waive-amile-jefferson.html#comments Sat, 19 Dec 2020 23:51:49 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=195050 The Celtics got down to the roster limit by waiving power forward Amile Jefferson, tweets Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

Jefferson, 27, signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Boston two weeks ago, so he could wind up with the Celtics’ G League affiliate. He played a combined 30 games for the Magic in his first two NBA seasons before being waived in February. Jefferson got into 18 games last season, but played just 4.1 minutes per night.

Boston’s roster appears to be set for the regular season, with all 15 slots filled, as well as a pair of two-way players.

Celtics Sign Amile Jefferson To Exhibit 10 Deal https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/celtics-sign-amile-jefferson-to-exhibit-10-deal.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/celtics-sign-amile-jefferson-to-exhibit-10-deal.html#comments Sat, 05 Dec 2020 15:05:00 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=191306 The Celtics have signed former Duke big man Amile Jefferson to an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Jay King of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Jefferson, 27, spent five seasons with the Blue Devils, including being team captain for three of them. The Philadelphia native helped lead Duke to the 2015 National Championship.

A right foot fracture in 2015/16 limited Jefferson to just nine games and he was granted medical redshirt approval by the ACC to return for a fifth season. Jefferson’s fifth season at Duke included being teammates with now Celtics All-Star Jayson Tatum.

Jefferson has spent parts of the last two seasons suiting up for the Magic, appearing in 30 games and averaging 1.4 PPG and 1.5 RPG for Orlando. He also had a stint in the G League with the Timberwolves’ G League affiliate Iowa Wolves.

Jefferson’s Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed one-year, minimum salary pact that allows a player to make a bonus of up to $50K if he is waived and remains on the franchise’s G League squad for at least 60 days.

Sixers Trade James Ennis To Magic https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/02/sixers-dealing-james-ennis-to-orlando.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/02/sixers-dealing-james-ennis-to-orlando.html#comments Thu, 06 Feb 2020 22:03:54 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=152944 4:03pm: The trade is now official, the Magic announced in a press release. President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement that Ennis will add “shooting, athleticism, and toughness” to the team.

Orlando also confirmed the release of Amile Jefferson, which we noted in a separate story.

2:00pm: The Sixers have reached an agreement to trade James Ennis to the Magic in exchange for a second-round pick, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ennis’ approval was required to complete the deal, adds Bobby Marks of ESPN (Twitter link). He has veto power over any trade because he’s on a one-year Bird restriction.

Philadelphia will receive the Lakers’ 2020 second-rounder in return, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic (Twitter link). It would be 59th overall if L.A. remains in its current position in our Reverse Standings.

Because Orlando has a full roster, an opening must be created before the deal can be finalized. The most likely move is an early termination for Gary Clark‘s second 10-day contract, which expires tomorrow night.

The Sixers needed to clear two players off their roster after agreeing to a deal last night with the Warriors that will bring Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III  in exchange for three second-round picks.

Magic To Waive Forward Amile Jefferson https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/02/magic-to-waive-forward-amile-jefferson.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/02/magic-to-waive-forward-amile-jefferson.html#comments Thu, 06 Feb 2020 21:10:55 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=152991 The Magic plan to waive forward Amile Jefferson, Josh Robbins of The Athletic tweets.

Orlando needs to open up a roster spot to make room for incoming forward James Ennis. The Magic agreed to acquire Ennis from the Sixers for a second-round pick on Thursday.

Jefferson, 26, has made 18 mostly brief appearances with the Magic this season, averaging 0.8 PPG and 1.3 RPG in 4.1 MPG. He also appeared in 12 games with Orlando last season.

Jefferson signed a two-year contract with Orlando in early November after playing for the team on a two-way deal last season. However, the second year of the minimum contract was not guaranteed. Jefferson, who was on a two-way contract with the Timberwolves for a good portion of the 2017/18 season, spent a majority of this season in the G League.

With Jefferson on his way out, it appears Orlando will retain Gary Clark for now. His second 10-day contract with the club expires on Friday night, so the club would have to re-sign him to a rest-of-season deal to keep him beyond that point.
