Knicks Sign, Waive Andrew White

DECEMBER 12, 3:51pm: White has been waived, according to the team’s Twitter feed. He’ll likely hook on with the Knicks’ G League team in Westchester.

DECEMBER 12, 7:54am: The Knicks officially signed White on Friday after opening up a roster spot by waiving Labissiere, per the NBA’s transactions log.

DECEMBER 8: The Knicks have reached a contract agreement with free agent forward Andrew White, who will sign an Exhibit 10 deal with the team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).

White, 27, went undrafted in 2017 out of Syracuse. He was a Celtics camp invitee as a rookie and had a stint on a two-way contract for Atlanta in 2018, but has otherwise spent his professional career in the G League, playing for the Erie BayHawks, Maine Red Claws, and Westchester Knicks.

In 130 total NBAGL games, White has averaged 13.4 PPG and 4.1 RPG on .438/.389/.838 shooting in 30.6 minutes per contest.

Because the Knicks already hold White’s G League rights, the signing appears designed to get him a $50K Exhibit 10 bonus, assuming he qualifies for it in what figures to be a shortened NBAGL season. Typically, players must spend at least 60 days with the club’s G League affiliate to earn that bonus — it’s not clear if or how the rules might be adjusted in 2020/21.

New York also agreed to Exhibit 10 deals with Skal Labissiere and James Young. The club has a full 20-man camp squad for the time being, so some back-of-the-roster shuffling will be required to complete the three signings. White, Labissiere, and Young will each likely have a very brief stay on the Knicks’ NBA roster.

NBA Announces 80 Players For G League Elite Camp

The NBA has announced in a press release that 80 players are set to participate in its G League Elite Camp next week in Chicago from May 12-14. The event will include 40 prospects who are eligible for this year’s draft, as well as 40 standout prospects from the 2018/19 G League season.

Heading into this spring, the NBA revamped its G League Elite Camp, which in past years has simply showcased some of the NBAGL’s top performers.  That aspect of the event will still exist, but G League players will only participate in the first two days of the event.

The second half of the event will feature 40 draft-eligible prospects who aren’t among the 60 prospects invited to the actual draft combine. The list of participants was determined by an NBA team vote, and those prospects will work out and scrimmage during the final two days of the event — there will be no overlap with the G League portion of the event.

As this week’s announcement confirms, a select number of draft-eligible prospects participating in the G League Elite Camp will also be invited to attend the combine itself, which takes place from May 15-19 in Chicago.

Former Hawk Andrew White To Play In Turkey

After playing for the Hawks on a two-way contract in 2017/18, small forward Andrew White is headed to Turkey for the upcoming season. Turkish club Afyon Belediye published a tweet that included a White highlight package and welcomed him to the team.

White, 25, went undrafted in Syracuse in 2017 but caught on with the Celtics for training camp. He opened the regular season with the Maine Red Claws in the G League after being released by Boston, and a strong showing for Maine (16.0 PPG on .435/.400/.855 shooting in 24 games) led to a two-way deal with the Hawks.

White appeared in 15 NBA games for Atlanta and 15 more games for the Erie BayHawks – the Hawks’ G League affiliate – after joining his new club. However, the Hawks decided to go in another direction with their two-way contract slots this offseason and didn’t tender White a qualifying offer in June, making him an unrestricted free agent.

White is one of several former NBA players set to play in Turkey in 2018/19. Joffrey Lauvergne, Nigel Hayes, Shane Larkin, Markel Brown, and Jeff Withey are among the others who have reached deals with Turkish clubs this summer.

Southeast Notes: Wade, Winslow, Magic, Hawks

While word surfaced earlier this week that a team in the Chinese Basketball Association has offered Dwyane Wade a three-year contract worth $25MM, Rodney McGruder would like to see the future Hall-of-Famer stick with the Heat.

“I hope he stays with us,” McGruder said of his Heat teammate on Tuesday, per Manny Navarro of The Miami Herald. “That’s his personal decision, but I would love to have him back. … I’ve got a sense that he wants to play in the NBA [based off of] when he came back to play for us [at the February trade deadline] and the things that he showed in the playoffs.”

Although Wade hasn’t announced any decisions yet, international basketball reporter David Pick (Twitter link) is told that the rumblings linking Wade to China “aren’t as serious as advertised.”

According to Pick, the Zhejiang Golden Bulls – the club that reportedly made that $25MM offer to Wade – have secured another scorer for the upcoming season by agreeing to sign Marcus Denmon to a $1.2MM deal. A former Missouri standout, Denmon was a second-round pick in the 2012 draft but never appeared in an NBA regular season game.

  • The Thunder assigned rookie center Dakari Johnson to their Oklahoma City Blue affiliate for today’s playoff game, the team announced in an email. Johnson put up 15 points and five rebounds in a loss to South Bay.
  • The Hawks assigned rookie forward Andrew White to their affiliate in Erie, also for a playoff game today, tweets Michael Cunningham of The Atlanta Journal Constitution. White had 15 points and seven rebounds in a win over Lakeland.

Southeast Notes: MCW, Sessions, Heat, Hawks

After signing with the Hornets during the 2017 offseason, Michael Carter-Williams has served as the team’s primary point guard behind Kemba Walker. However, Carter-Williams’ season appears to be in jeopardy.

As Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer writes (via Twitter), the former Rookie of the Year suffered a left shoulder injury on Sunday and is currently weighing whether to elect for surgery or rehab. According to Bonnell, it could be a few days before Carter-Williams makes a decision, but if he opts for surgery, it figures to end the 2017/18 season for the Hornets guard.

For now, the Hornets figure to turn to Malik Monk for the backup minutes behind Walker, and the team’s lone All-Star is also ready to play a few extra minutes if needed, as Bonnell notes (Twitter links).

  • Although he didn’t play a single minute for the Wizards during his first 10-day contract, Ramon Sessions inked a second 10-day deal with the club on Monday. As he tells Candace Buckner of The Washington Post (Twitter link), Sessions he’s prepared to see the court this time around. “If I sit for another 10 days, it’s nothing that I’ve got grudge on my shoulder or anything,” Sessions said. “But if they call me, I’ll be ready to go.”
  • Despite slipping to a tie for seventh in the Eastern Conference standings, the Heat like their roster and are confident they’ll finish the season strong, writes Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel. “We have everything we need,” said team president Pat Riley. “We have shot blocking. We’ve got pick-and-roll bigs who can catch lobs. We’ve got pick-and-roll bigs who can catch layups. We’ve got shooters, defenders. We’ve got a lot of versatility. … I think Coach (Erik Spoelstra) has done a great job in developing a system that’s for everybody. And so let’s get on with it.”
  • Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution provides an update on the Hawks‘ two-way players, tweeting that – as of Monday – Josh Magette had 25 days of NBA service left, while Andrew White had 13 days left. Given Atlanta’s place in the standings, the team won’t have to worry about making either player postseason-eligible via an NBA contract.

Andrew White Signs Two-Way Deal With Hawks

JANUARY 15: White’s two-way deal with the Hawks is now official, according to a press release issued today by the team.

JANUARY 13: The Hawks will sign forward Andrew White to a two-way contract, tweets Shams Charania of The Vertical.

White has been playing with the Celtics’ G League affiliate in Maine, where he is averaging 16.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in 22 games. He signed a partially guaranteed deal with Boston in August, but was waived in the preseason.

The Hawks have a two-way slot open, so no other move will have to be made before adding White. Josh Magette holds Atlanta’s other two-way deal.

Celtics Trim Roster With Four Cuts

The Celtics have waived Daniel Dixon, Jonathan Holmes, L.J. Peak and Andrew White, the team announced on Twitter.

Dixon, initially reported to be joining the team in August, didn’t officially sign on with the C’s until this week. The shooting guard went undrafted out of William & Mary back in June.

Holmes, on the other hand, a big man out of Texas, went undrafted back in 2015 and has struggled with injuries since.

Peak, a familiar face from his time at Georgetown also went undrafted this summer after declaring as an early entrant.

Finally, White, a sharp-shooting swingman inked back in August has also been let go.

Dixon, Peak and White could all end up as affiliate players with with the club’s G League squad while Holmes could end up in Maine as well, with returning rights.

Celtics Sign Andrew White

AUGUST 29: The Celtics formally signed White on Monday, according to RealGM’s official NBA transactions log.

AUGUST 17: Syracuse guard Andrew White has signed a partially guaranteed one-year contract with the Celtics, tweets Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. He is probably ticketed for Boston’s G League affiliate in Maine, Himmelsbach adds.

The signing was confirmed to Mike Waters of Syracuse.com by White’s agent, Adie von Gontard.

At 6’7″, White was the leading scorer for the Orange last season at 17.4 points per game, while setting a school record for 3-pointers with 112. He played for the Cavaliers during summer league.

Pistons Notes: Downtown Move, Kennard, FA Workouts

The Detroit City Council voted on Tuesday in favor of several key agreements related to the Pistons’ move downtown, as Christine Ferretti and Jennifer Chambers of The Detroit News report. However, while Tuesday’s votes finalized approvals for the Pistons’ new practice facility and headquarters, there are more roadblocks that will need to be cleared before the club’s move to the Little Caesars arena is fully approved.

On June 20, the Detroit city council is scheduled to vote on the issuance of $34.5MM in proposed taxpayer-funded DDA bonds. Shortly after Tuesday’s city council session took place though, a federal judge granted a June 19 lawsuit that seeks to halt that June 20 vote, per Louis Aguilar of The Detroit News. As Aguilar explains, that lawsuit seeks to allow Detroit and Wayne County residents to vote on whether taxpayer money should be put toward the new arena and team facilities.

As the Pistons wait for resolution to the legal battle over their potential new arena, here are a few more items related to the team:
