Antawn Jamison

Free Agent Stock Watch: Antawn Jamison

With all the big-money free agents off the board, and most of the mid-level types scooped up as well, HoopsHype.com currently ranks Antawn Jamison as the best option still available. While there are plenty of candidates among the remaining free agents to have better 2013/14 seasons than Jamison, it's hard to argue that any other unsigned player matches his combination of talent and track record. As such, it's worth trying to figure out where the veteran forward may land.

A year ago, when Jamison hit unrestricted free agency following the expiration of a four-year, $50MM contract, his top priority was contending for a championship. At the time, his decision to sign a minimum-salary deal with the Lakers looked like a good way to pursue that title, but the season clearly didn't work out how Jamison or the team planned.

Before he signed in Los Angeles, Jamison was courted by a number of teams, including his hometown Bobcats, who were reportedly willing to offer more money and perhaps more years than the Lakers. Charlotte didn't show the same type of interest in Jamison this time around, but after a frustrating year in L.A., the 37-year-old will no doubt keep last summer's free agency in mind. That may be why he hasn't rushed into a situation that looks great on paper, preferring instead to take his time to figure out the best possible fit.

It's possible that best fit could come with L.A.'s other team, but the Clippers have reportedly told Jamison that they're waiting on Lamar Odom, who is the club's preferred choice. In any case, the Clips would only be able to offer Jamison the veteran's minimum, and it's not clear if he'll have to settle for that amount again. Although Jamison's production took a significant hit last year, that dip can be attributed in part to a non-optimal role with the Lakers. The former fourth overall pick still posted solid offensive numbers, including 9.4 PPG, a .464 FG%, and a 15.3 PER.

As I observed when I recapped how teams have used their mid-level exceptions so far this offseason, plenty of clubs still have money to spend. Contenders like the Thunder, Rockets, Grizzlies, Heat, Pacers, and Pistons could all offer Jamison more than the minimum salary, and a few of those clubs may be in need of some frontcourt depth. If Jamison is willing to play for the minimum again if it means competing for a championship, that opens up a few more doors, including the Clippers.

Jamison has suggested that he wants to play two more seasons before retiring, but he's probably unlikely to land a guaranteed two-year deal this summer. If he signs a minimum-salary contract, perhaps it could include a second-year player option, whereas a deal larger than the minimum could potentially include a non-guaranteed second-year (essentially a team option).

Still, I think the most likely scenario for Jamison is that he signs for the minimum with a contender like the Clippers or the Thunder. He's never been a particularly strong defender, but the UNC product can still contribute enough on offense that he could be a good value for a playoff team in need of one more scoring option off the bench.

Clippers Tell Jamison They’re Waiting On Odom

According to Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, one source says the Clippers have notified free agent forward Antawn Jamison that they are waiting for an answer from Lamar Odom, who is the more preferred target of the two at this point. Yahoo's Marc J. Spears (via Twitter) says that Jamison was led to believe he'd be joining the Clips before being notified of the team's pursuit of Odom today.

The Clippers are willing to offer the veteran's minimum of $1.4MM, and although Odom would prefer more money, no other NBA team has made a higher offer (Twitter links). In addition to a strong recommendation from Vinny Del Negro, Spears tweets that head coach Doc Rivers is patiently waiting to sign the 6'10 forward after getting rave reviews of how great of a teammate he is. The 14-year-veteran appeared in all 82 contests for LAC last season, averaging 4.0 PPG and 5.9 RPG in 19.7 MPG. Odom's shooting percentages (39.9% overall and 20.0% from three) were far below his career averages, although he did hit long range shots at a higher clip in the postseason (35.7%).

Odds & Ends: Sixers, West, Gordon, Jamison

Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool appears to have become the leading candidate in the Sixers head coaching search, according to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. Most reports have cited Brett Brown and Michael Curry as the front-runners, but it seems there are still several hopefuls who could emerge with the job. We passed along news from Washburn earlier today on the continuing possibility of a Rajon Rondo trade to the Pistons, and here's more from the Globe scribe as we round up the morning's news from around the NBA:

  • The Knicks and Grizzlies have reportedly been in talks with Delonte West, but the Knicks appear to be out, and according to Washburn, no team has shown serious interest.
  • The additions of Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans make for a crowded backcourt in New Orleans, but Eric Gordon is glad to have his new Pelicans teammates, he tells Washburn.
  • Clippers boss Doc Rivers didn't make an offer to Antawn Jamison when they met for dinner last night, but the Clippers and Jamison's reps plan to talk soon, reports Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com.
  • The Hawks waived DeShawn Stevenson on Friday, and in the likely event that he clears waivers and hits free agency, he'd like to sign with the Heat, according to a pair ofdispatches from his Twitter account.
  • Shelvin Mack appears in a tenuous position with the Hawks, since his contract is non-guaranteed and he plays the same position as Jeff Teague and first-round pick Dennis Schröder. If the Hawks waive Mack, he'll be the primary point guard target for Olimpia Milano of Italy, Enea Trapani of Sportando reports.
  • Elston Turner has reached an agreement to become an assistant coach for the Grizzlies, a source tells Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com. The defensively minded Turner also spoke about joining the Timberwolves staff.
  • Stefhon Hannah has signed to play with Juve Caserta in Italy, the team announced (translation via Sportando's Emiliano Carchia). Hannah worked out for the Knicks this summer, and spent two weeks last fall in training camp with the Warriors.

Antawn Jamison To Meet With Clippers

Free agent Antawn Jamison will have dinner Saturday night with Doc Rivers, who doubles as Clippers coach and head of the team's basketball ops, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. The Clippers are one of four teams reportedly interested in the 37-year-old. The Bobcats, Grizzlies and Bulls are the others.

The Clippers can only offer the minimum salary, and adding Jamison would put the club over the tax line, even if it waives the non-guaranteed contract of Maalik Wayns. Still, the Clips have been linked to Jamison on numerous occasions this summer, with one report indicating that the team would sign either Jamison or Lamar Odom.

Jamison would be a curious fit for the Clippers, since it would leave the team without a true center to back up DeAndre Jordan. Byron Mullens is a 7-footer, but he, like Jamison, relies on an outside game. The 6'8" Jamison shifted between small forward and power forward this past season for the Lakers, averaging 9.4 points in 21.5 minutes per game, both career lows.

Antawn Jamison Drawing Interest

One month after free agency opened, Antawn Jamison still finds himself without a deal, but that doesn't mean there are no potential suitors out there. According to DeAntae Prince of the Sporting News, the Bulls, Clippers, Grizzlies, and Bobcats have all displayed interest in Jamison, who still believes he has a couple solid NBA seasons left.

Multiple reports within the last month have linked the Clippers and Bobcats to Jamison, but I believe this is the first we've heard of the Bulls' and Grizzlies' interest. It's also not clear whether some of these clubs may have only been interested in the 37-year-old prior to completing other moves. In any case, Jamison is seeking a situation that works out a little better than his one-year stint with the Lakers did.

"Because it looks good on paper doesn't mean it's the perfect fit," Jamison said. "So I really want to make sure the next team I go to, whether it's a one- or two-year deal, that it's a really good fit and we have a understanding with each other as well.

"I made the money, accomplished a lot of things individually. I have a couple years left where I can compete night in and night out and really have an opportunity to enjoy basketball and not dealing with losses and other nonsense. I just want to have fun and be a part of something special."

Jamison signed for the veteran's minimum a year ago with the Lakers, which was viewed as a discount at the time. However, after a down year by his standards (career-low 15.3 PER), he may be in line for another minimum-salary contract this time around.

FA Rumors: Maggette, Blair, Telfair, Tinsley

Restricted free agents like Nikola Pekovic, Brandon Jennings, and Gerald Henderson represent the most intriguing names left on the free agent market, but in his latest piece for HoopsWorld, Alex Kennedy takes a look at a few unrestricted free agents who have flown more under the radar. Here are some highlights from Kennedy:

  • Corey Maggette considered retiring to pursue a front office job, but it looks like he'll postpone that plan for at least a year. Maggette would like to play for a contender, and could likely be had for a one-year, minimum-salary deal.
  • Although more than a dozen teams, including the Bulls and Clippers, have expressed some level of interest in DeJuan Blair, the big man still hasn't been able to secure the sort of multiyear offer he's seeking.
  • There continues to be mutual interest between the Knicks and Sebastian Telfair, who has also attracted some interest from contenders like the Heat and Thunder.
  • The Nets nearly signed Jamaal Tinsley earlier in the offseason, but opted for Shaun Livingston instead. Tinsley is now considering teams like the Mavericks, Rockets, Bobcats, and Suns.
  • Keyon Dooling still appears likely to make a decision on a team within the next week, and he figures to land a one-year contract worth the veteran's minimum.
  • After turning down the Bobcats last summer to join an apparent contender (the Lakers), Antawn Jamison could end up returning home to Charlotte this time around, according to Kennedy.

Latest On Antawn Jamison

Antawn Jamison has been on the free agent radar of teams for the last couple of weeks, but he says that teams have shied away from him due to unnecessary concerns about his surgically-repaired wrist, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter).  He has been linked to the Clippers quite a bit, but a source tells Spears (link) that the Bobcats are interested as well.

Jamison told Spears (Twitter link) that he began shooting 3-pointers again last Friday and can do full contact 5-on-5 in a month.  He's also willing to workout for teams to show that he will be good to go in time for the start of the 2013/14 season.

Last week we heard that the Clippers continue to eye both Jamison and Lamar Odom, but are taking their time as they determine the best fit.  The Clips are unlikely to sign both, so it's probably a one-or-the-other scenario for them.

Pacific Notes: World Peace, Odom, Kings

Metta World Peace was officially amnestied by the Lakers on Thursday, and remains on amnesty waivers, rather than regular waivers–instead of claiming his entire salary, teams can now place partial bids for his services, with the highest bid winning out. Here's the full explanation of the amnesty provision, and this year's amnesty primer.

Doug Davis, one of a pair of agents for the former Ron Artest, suggested that his client's assertion that he may leave the NBA should be taken with a grain of salt, notes Marc Berman of the New York Post. World Peace doesn't want to uproot his family, so the Clippers appear to be his first choice among NBA teams, but Knicks coach Mike Woodson said the team is "on alert" in case World Peace clears amnesty waivers.

"There’s a number of definitely positive things about New York," Davis said. "Hopefully we’ll have the opportunity to assess them [Sunday] after he clears waivers. It’s a very tense time, this 48-hour period. We want him to be in control of his own destiny."

Here's what else is happening around the Pacific Division on this Saturday in the midst of amnesty week:

  • The Clippers continue to eye free agent big men Lamar Odom and Antawn Jamison, but sources tell Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports that the team is taking it slow as it determines the best fit (Twitter link).
  • Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times examines whether the Lakers should attempt to avoid paying the luxury tax this season.
  • The Kings have renounced their rights to Toney Douglas, who already has an agreement in place with the Warriors, according to the RealGM transactions logThe Kings also renounced their rights to Cole Aldrich.
  • And the Kings officially announced in a press release that rookie Ben McLemore had been signed"The Sacramento Kings today signed first-round draft pick Ben McLemore to a contract, according to Kings General Manager Pete D’Alessandro. Sacramento selected McLemore with the seventh-overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed."

Pacific Notes: Nash, Jamison, Clippers

A few notes from around the Pacific Division.

  • Steve Nash told ESPN 710 radio that he believes the Lakers had no chance in convincing Dwight Howard to re-sign in Los Angeles.
  • ESPNLA.com's Ramona Shelburne tweets that free agent forward Antawn Jamison will delay his decision on signing with the Clippers until later in the week.
  • The Clippers have officially renounced the rights to Chauncey Billups and Lamar Odom, but are still interested in signing Odom, according to a tweet from Los Angeles Times reporter Brad Turner.

Clippers Talking With Antawn Jamison

MONDAY, 12:15pm: The Clippers and Jamison are making progress in talks on a one-year contract, but have yet to reach an agreement, tweets Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

SUNDAY, 5:20pm: The Clippers and veteran free agent Antawn Jamison are in contract talks, NBA executives told Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times.  The Clippers are over the cap so the most they could offer is the veteran minimum of $1.4MM as Jamison has more than ten years of NBA experience.

Jamison, 37, played for the Lakers last season and averaged 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game, mostly off the bench.  The two-time All-Star has career averages of 18.8 points and 7.6 rebounds over 16 seasons in the league.  The Wizards are also said to have interest in Jamison.
