Arnett Moultrie

Odds & Ends: Howard, Profits, Suns, Draft

It was another wild night of playoff basketball that included more unfortunate injuries, this time to the Bulls Joakim Noah and Avery Bradley of the Celtics. Here's what's been going on off the court while you've had your eyes fixed on the hardwood:

  • Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel dissects the latest comments from Dwight Howard, who told TMZ that he would never quit on his team or Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, with whom D12 says he's had several conversations since the start of the playoffs.
  • Commissioner David Stern says that most NBA teams will turn a profit this year, and predicts all 30 franchises will be profitable within two years, according to a report from Jonathan D. Salant of Bloomberg News, who rounded up comments Stern made on a Bloomberg Television show airing this weekend. Stern had said during the latest CBA negotiations that NBA teams had lost a combined $300MM over the previous three seasons.
  • Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic examines the desire of the Suns to keep restricted free agent Robin Lopez
  • HoopsWorld unveiled its mock draft, with all four contributors agreeing on Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal for the top three spots. Steve Kyler adds a report that Arnett Moultrie and Andrew Nicholson are rocketing up some teams' draft boards.
  • Brian T. Smith of The Salt Lake Tribune compares the approaches of Jazz GM Kevin O'Connor and Spurs GM R.C. Buford, both of whom share a connection with longtime NBA coach Larry Brown.
  • Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida breaks down the potential U.S. Olympic team roster, and Rob Mahoney of The New York Times examines what the team needs.

Odds & Ends: Howard, Draft, Hornets, Blazers

Tuesday afternoon links from around the NBA….

  • David Pingalore of Local 6 in Orlando, who reported earlier this month that Dwight Howard had asked the Magic to fire Stan Van Gundy, says Howard no longer wants to play for Van Gundy. This situation may end up working itself out: Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel argued yesterday that the Magic should shut down Howard for the rest of the year, and Van Gundy is unlikely to remain the team's coach for next season.
  • The latest mock draft from ESPN.com's Chad Ford has received plenty of feedback from NBA scouts and executives, Ford writes. Mississippi State's Arnett Moultrie and Dion Waiters of Syracuse were among the players Ford's sources felt were ranked too low — the latest ESPN.com mock had them coming off the board at 19th and 23rd respectively.
  • North Carolina's John Henson has hired Jim Tanner as his agent, reports Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype (via Twitter). The junior forward announced in late March that he was entering the NBA draft.
  • Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld explores the direction of the Hornets now that the team is under new ownership.
  • Having been officially eliminated from the playoffs, the Trail Blazers now look like a good bet to score two lottery picks, as Mike Tokito of the Oregonian writes.

Draft Update: Moultrie

According to a tweet from Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com, Mississippi State's Arnett Moultrie has officially declared for the NBA draft. The 6'11" junior has been projected for selection from mid-lottery to late first round.

Moultrie first made his intentions to declare public last week, but there was some talk of him entering a graduate program elsewhere and applying for a waiver to play one more year of college basketball.

Last season he averaged 16.4 PPG and 10.5 RPG on 54.9% shooting from the floor.

Draft Updates: Moultrie, Mock Draft, Cavaliers

The NBA officially announced today that this year's draft will be held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. With exactly three months until the June 28th event, let's round up the latest news and rumors….

  • Arnett Moultrie, who projects as a mid-to-late first-round pick, intends to enter the draft, as he tells Brad Locke of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. "I… have decided to explore my options and enter my name into the 2012 NBA Draft," the Mississippi State big man wrote in a text message. "I have not signed with an agent, as of yet. However, I do anticipate doing so."
  • Moultrie's declaration will prevent him from returning to Mississippi State for his senior year. However, there's one loophole that could allow him to withdraw and play one more year of college basketball, as Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com explains.
  • ESPN.com's Chad Ford released his second mock draft today (Insider-only link) and fielded draft-related questions in a chat. In another Insider piece, Ford previews the best of the 2012/13 NCAA freshman class.
  • Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio also answered a number of draft questions in his latest chat, with a strong focus on the Cavaliers' draft prospects.
