C.J. Miles

Amico On Grant, Miles, Irving, Waiters

Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio writes that Cavaliers GM Chris Grant is happy with where the team is now, having added Dion Waiters, Tyler Zeller, and C.J. Miles this summer (Sulia link). However, Grant also says that the team still hopes to sign Alonzo Gee but understands that the process could take some time (Mary Schmitt Boyer of the Plain Dealer tweets). Here are a few more miscellaneous notes coming out of Cleveland this evening, courtesy of Amico:

  • Miles, who looks at his situation in Cleveland as a fresh start, believes that he has more to offer than what he had been able to show in Utah (Sulia link).
  • According to head coach Byron Scott, Kyrie Irving says he's "doing great" and has already been dribbling with his surgically repaired hand.
  • Scott also mentioned that Dion Waiters has been working out in Los Angeles since the summer league and appeared to look much better conditioning-wise.

Central Rumors: Bulls, Cavs, Miles, Gee, Scott

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com looks at how the Bulls are preserving their flexibility for seasons to come with their penny-pinching this summer. The Bulls may wind up paying the luxury tax this season, but are seeking to avoid doing so in later years when restrictions kick in that bar taxpaying teams from acquiring players via sign-and-trade, using cap exceptions, and making uneven financial trades. Elsewhere in the Central Division, Bob Finnan of The News-Herald provides few Cavs-centered updates this evening:

  • Cavs GM Chris Grant was somewhat surprised that the team was able to sign C.J. Miles, given heavy pursuit by the Lakers and Rockets, Finnan writes. Miles will compete for a starting job, Cavs coach Byron Scott says, adding that only Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao are guaranteed spots in the starting lineup.
  • Scott said the team's next move is to get a deal done with Alonzo Gee, Finnan notes. The Cavs are reportedly likely to match any offers the restricted free agent swingman receives from other teams.
  • The Cavs have begun talks on a contract extension for Scott, who expressed his desire to stick around. "We'll take care of that somewhere down the line," the coach said in Finnan's story. "People ask, ‘Do you really like Cleveland?' I love it. The perception of Cleveland is it's the ‘Mistake by the Lake.' I hope I'm here in the next five years. I enjoy what's going on."
  • The Magic have raided one Central Division team, hiring Pistons director of pro personnel Harold Ellis for a similar position, but won't be taking assistant coach Adrian Griffin from the Bulls, who've denied the Magic permission to interview him, as we heard in earlier reports today.

Cavaliers Sign C.J. Miles

THURSDAY, 8:18am: Miles' deal with the Cavs will pay him $2MM per year, with a team option for the second season, according to Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal.

WEDNESDAY, 3:12pm: The Cavaliers have officially signed Miles, the team announced in a press release.

2:22pm: Miles has passed his physical, acording to Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio (via Twitter). The Cavs have yet to officially announce the signing, but should do so soon.

FRIDAY, 11:10am: Miles and the Cavs have agreed to terms on a deal, says Smith in his story for the Salt Lake Tribune.

10:41am: After drawing interest from a handful of teams, including the Lakers and Bucks, C.J. Miles is expected to sign with the Cavaliers, according to Brian T. Smith of the Salt Lake Tribune (via Twitter). Smith adds that Miles' bond with Cavs coach Byron Scott influenced his decision and that his contract is expected to be for two years (Twitter links).

Cleveland is one of the few remaining NBA teams that has a decent chunk of cap space at its disposal, so Miles figures to be signed using some of that space. The Cavs should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-15MM under the cap, though obviously the 25-year-old won't receive a salary that large.

According to Smith, the Rockets and Mavericks were among the other teams interested in Miles this summer (Twitter link). The seven-year veteran has spent his entire NBA career with the Jazz until this point, with his career year coming in 2010/11 when he averaged 12.8 points and 14.4 PER in 25.2 minutes per contest.

Restricted free agent Alonzo Gee has yet to re-sign with the Cavs or sign an offer sheet with another club, but Miles' deal with Cleveland doesn't necessarily mean Gee won't be back. Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer noted earlier this week that even as the Cavs were pursuing players like Miles and Carlos Delfino, the team remained very open to retaining Gee.

Bucks Eyeing Mickael Pietrus, C.J. Miles

The Bucks are currently looking to add an athletic wing to their roster, and according to Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times, the team is mulling either a trade or a free agent signing. While trading one of their many power forwards for a wing is one possibility, the Bucks are eyeing a couple options on the free agent market. Mickael Pietrus and C.J. Miles are both potential targets for Milwaukee, says Woelfel.

According to Bill McCandless, Pietrus' agent, his client would "absolutely" be interested in playing for the Bucks. McCandless confirmed that he and GM John Hammond had exploratory talks in July, and given comments made by the agent last week, I'd assume he's looking for a portion of Milwaukee's mid-level exception for Pietrus.

Miles, meanwhile, is said to be drawing interest from the Cavaliers and Lakers in addition to the Bucks. Like Pietrus, he figures to be seeking more than a minimum-salary contract. For their part, the Bucks still have their full $1.957MM bi-annual exception and $4.35MM of their mid-level exception to use on free agents, if they so choose.

Woelfel adds that the Bucks are viewed as the frontrunners to land Joel Przybilla, whose meeting with the team earlier this week reportedly went well.

Cavs Eyeing C.J. Miles, Carlos Delfino

The Cavaliers continue to shop for small forwards, and aren't necessarily targeting players to replace Alonzo Gee, says Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. According to Pluto, the Cavs may add a small forward in addition to Gee, and are eyeing C.J. Miles and Carlos Delfino.

This isn't the first time we've heard about Cleveland's interest in Miles, who met with the Cavs last week. While the Cavs could view Miles as a Plan B if they fail to come to terms with Gee, it seems unlikely that the restricted free agent will slip away, as the team is prepared to match any offer sheet he signs. So it's not surprising that Pluto suggests the Cavs could be interested in signing both players. Still, Miles may be headed elsewhere, as he's said to be close to a decision and drawing serious interest from the Lakers.

Delfino, meanwhile, has reportedly received some interest from the Rockets and others, but has yet to find the multiyear deal he's seeking. With a few expiring contracts coming off their books at the end of 2012/13, the Cavs have the flexibility to make Delfino a multiyear offer if they so choose, but the club may view that as an unnecessary commitment for a non-core player.

C.J. Miles Drawing Serious Interest From Lakers

In a string of tweets, Brian T. Smith of The Salt Lake Tribune says that unrestricted free agent C.J. Miles has drawn serious interest from the Lakers and that they currently have the edge among other teams that Miles is strongly considering. The 6'6 guard/forward played in 56 games for the Jazz last season, averaging 9.1 PPG on 38.1% shooting from the field and 30.7% from long range in 20.4 MPG.

According to Smith, the Lakers are offering a one or two-year deal for the mini-mid level exception and that Miles could finalize his decision within the next two or three days.

Cavs Notes: Kevin Jones, Alonzo Gee, C.J. Miles

With the start of the 2012/13 season mere months away, the Cavs have been relatively quiet this offseason in terms of free agent signings and trades. From signing Luke Harangody to a qualifying offer to acquiring Jeremy Pargo in a trade with Memphis, Cleveland has yet to make a true splash this summer. Let's check in with Bob Finnan of The News-Herald to catch up on the latest news and headlines surrounding the Cavs…

  • The Cavs remain interested in fully committing to power forward Kevin Jones even though the team already has five players on the roster who play his position. The undrafted rookie from West Virginia suffered a bone bruise in his ankle but is expected to be ready for training camp if Cleveland ends up signing him. Jones, 22, averaged 19.9 PPG and 10.9 RPG during his senior year with the Mountaineers.
  • Cleveland has yet to decide on what to do with small forward Alonzo Gee, a restricted free agent. Gee is hoping that the Cavs offer him a long-term deal instead of just a qualifying offer. If Gee isn't offered the type of deal that he desires, he can simply sign the qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
  • If the Cavs aren't able to come to terms on a deal with Gee, they will turn their attention to signing unrestricted free agent C.J. Miles. The former Jazz guard averaged 9.1 PPG and 2.1 RPG during the 2011/12 season. Finnan suggests that there is a small chance the Cavs sign both Gee and Miles.

Alonzo Gee, Cavs Far Apart In Negotiations

Restricted free agent Alonzo Gee and the Cavaliers are "said to be far apart in negotiations," reports Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio. The Cavs extended a qualifying offer to Gee last month, making him restricted, but the 25-year-old wing has received very little interest from other clubs, according to Amico.

With no clear rival suitors in play, the Cavs are under no pressure to up their offer to Gee. The team's standing QO is worth close to $2.7MM, and Gee has the option of accepting that offer and becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer. However, he would presumably prefer to land a multiyear deal. Gee finds himself in a situation similar to Warriors swingman Brandon Rush, who has also been unable to find an offer sheet, with rival teams assuming Golden State will match any reasonable offer.

I'd expect the Cavs and Gee to reach a resolution eventually, given Cleveland's cap room and Gee's apparent lack of alternatives. However, the Cavs seem prepared to explore other options. As we heard last night, the team has set up a meeting with unrestricted free agent C.J. Miles. According to Amico, the scheduled visit will be a two-day affair.

Odds & Ends: Celtics, Hawks, Miles, Brewer

ESPNBoston.com's Chris Forsberg takes a closer look at the non-guaranteed contract Jamar Smith has signed with the Celtics after impressing the team in summer league. That's one of a handful of Tuesday night odds and ends from around the league. Here are a few more:

Southwest Rumors: Anderson, Pargo, Miles

The Rockets have arguably been the Southwest team in the news most often this month, as they've pursued restricted free agents and continued to try to land a superstar like Dwight Howard via trade. For now though, Daryl Morey and the Rockets are playing the waiting game, as they wait to see whether the Knicks will match their offer sheet for Jeremy Lin. In the meantime, here are a few updates on Houston's division rivals….
