Free Agent Rumors: Nets, Pacers, Green

The July moratorium came to an end late last night, and a number of teams didn't waste any time in finalizing moves. The Lakers' acquisition of Steve Nash was the first transaction to become official, followed closely by the Knicks' signing of J.R. Smith, Deron Williams' contract with the Nets, and Blake Griffin's five-year extension with the Clippers. We're expecting more deals to be formally announced today, but there are plenty of free agents still on the market too. We'll be tracking the latest news on those guys right here, with the newest items added to the top of the page throughout the day….

Bulls Waive C.J. Watson

Faced with a decision on his 2012/13 contract, the Bulls officially waived C.J. Watson last night, tweets Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld. The move clears Watson from the team's books for the coming season, assuring that they won't have to pay his $3.2MM salary.

If another team is willing to take on Watson's $3.2MM figure, he can be claimed off waivers. However, it's more likely that the 28-year-old guard will clear waivers and become an unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team. Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group believes Watson could be a fit for the Warriors.

The Bulls also parted ways with Ronnie Brewer, and are still deciding whether to retain Kyle Korver.

Free Agent Rumors: Lucas, Camby, Lewis

Jeff Green reached an agreement to remain with the Celtics on Saturday, while Aaron Brooks became an unrestricted free agent after the Suns withdrew their qualifying offer to the guard. What will Sunday bring? Here are the latest rumors on a number of free agents still on the market:

Free Agent Rumors: Lin, Hinrich, Kaman, Nash

While a report surfaced last night suggesting that the Knicks may be reluctant to match a backloaded offer to Jeremy Lin, it doesn't appear that such an offer will come from Brooklyn. According to TNT's David Aldridge, the Nets haven't reached out to Lin, and appear to be viewing Steve Nash as Plan B if they can't lock up Deron Williams. Let's round up a few more free agent tidbits from around the league….

  • While an earlier report (linked below) from K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune suggests the Bulls will only offer the minimum to Kirk Hinrich, Johnson says he's now emerging as the team's top target (Twitter link).
  • Chris Kaman had a "positive" meeting with the Pacers today, but no offer was made, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.
  • Frank Isola of the New York Daily News believes Lin and Nash may be an either/or proposition for the Knicks.

Bulls Expected To Let C.J. Watson Go

The Bulls are expected to allow point guard C.J. Watson to become a free agent this summer, as Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle writes. Simmons indicates that the Bulls will decline a team option, but the Bulls don't possess an option. Instead, Watson's $3.2MM salary for the final season of his contract next year is not guaranteed if he's off the Bulls roster by July 10. Hayes On Bulls’ Offseason Plans

In a new column, Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times addresses several major questions the Bulls will face this offseason:

  • Despite his on-court regression in his second season, the Bulls are expected to match all offers on restricted free-agent center Omer Asik.
  • Chicago will likely not pick up their options on all three of C.J. Watson, Ronnie Brewer, and Kyle Korver, because they want to clear cap space to re-sign Taj Gibson after next season.
  • Hayes speculates that John Lucas III may develop into more of a three-point specialist than a backup point guard, which will likely make him cheaper to retain.
