Warriors Rumors: Harden, Free Agents, Ellis, Lin

The commissioner is in attendance at Golden State's game against the Rockets tonight, but David Stern's comments about the fate of the Kings overshadowed talk of the other team in Northern California. Nonetheless, there's plenty of Warriors-related news this evening, as we share here:

Sources told Grantland's Bill Simmons that the Thunder and Warriors talked about a James Harden deal last year, but Marcus Thompson II of the Bay Area News Group hears differently, tweeting that he was told the rumor wasn't legitimate.
The Warriors were considering Maalik Wayns, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Josh Childress, Dominic McGuire, Chris Wright (the forward from Dayton, not the guard from Georgetown) and Mickell Gladness before they decided to sign Malcolm Thomas to a 10-day contract, reports Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle. Some of those names could conceivably resurface if the W's don't keep Thomas around, though Wayns signed a 10-day deal with the Clippers.
Monta Ellis has benefited from the trade that sent him from the Warriors to the Bucks a year ago, as Thompson writes, while fellow Bay Area News Group scribe Tim Kawakami ponders what might have happened if the Warriors had held on to Ellis and Jeremy Lin.

Raptors Waive Jerel McNeal, Chris Wright

The Raptors announced that they have waived guard Jerel McNeal and forward Chris Wright. McNeal played in just one preseason game, while Wright was a DNP-CD for all six games. Toronto's roster now stands at 16.

Both players hooked on with the Raptors roughly one month ago on non-guaranteed deals. Wright, 24, appeared in 24 games for the Warriors in his rookie season but notched just 186 minutes in total. The 6'8" forward also played in 13 D-League games, averaging 17.8 PPG and 8.8 RPG.

McNeal, 25, has never appeared in an NBA game despite signing a 10-day contract with the Hornets in 2011. The former Marquette standout averaged 19.4 PPG in 47 games for the D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2010/11 and spent last season in the Italian league.

Raptors Sign Chris Wright, Jerel McNeal

The Raptors have officially signed forward Chris Wright and guard Jerel McNeal, the team announced today in a press release. Terms of the deals weren't disclosed, but in all likelihood, both players' contracts are non-guaranteed, minimum-salary pacts.

Wright, who will turn 24 later this month, appeared in 24 games for the Warriors in his rookie season, recording an impressive 18.6 PER, albeit in a small sample size (186 total minutes). The 6'8" forward out of Dayton averaged 17.8 PPG and 8.8 RPG for the Maine Red Claws and Dakota Wizards in 13 D-League contests.

McNeal, meanwhile, has never appeared in an NBA game, despite inking a 10-day contract with the Hornets in 2011. In 47 games for the D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2010/11, the 25-year-old averaged 19.4 PPG. The 6'3" guard was particularly impressive in the D-League postseason, averaging 27.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 6.5 APG while leading the Valley Vipers to a Finals appearance.

The signings bring the Raptors' roster to a total of 18 players. 14 of those players have fully guaranteed deals, while Jamaal Magloire and Dominic McGuire have partial guarantees, meaning Wright and McNeal will face uphill battles in earning roster spots.

Doug Smith of the Toronto Star first reported that the Raptors were expected to invite Wright to training camp.

Raptors Expected To Sign Chris Wright

In addition to inviting Jamaal Magloire to training camp, the Raptors are expecting to bring at least a couple more players to camp to give them the opportunity to earn a roster spot. According to Doug Smith of the Toronto Star, one of those players will be unrestricted free agent forward Chris Wright.

Wright didn't see a ton of playing time in his rookie season last year, but did make it into 24 games for the Warriors, including one start. In 7.8 minutes per game, he averaged 2.9 points and 1.9 rebounds, good for an 18.6 PER in a very small sample size. The 24-year-old went undrafted out of Dayton in 2011, and also played 13 D-League games in 2011/12, averaging 17.8 PPG and 8.8 RPG for Maine and Dakota.

With Magloire and Wright on non-guaranteed deals, the Raptors will have at least 16 players in camp, so Wright will have to impress to earn a roster spot.

Former Seton Hall standout Jeremy Hazell has latched on with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the D-League, agent Seth Cohen tells HoopsHype (Twitter link). The 6'5" guard went undrafted after his senior year last season, but wound up in camp with the Suns.
The Warriors announced they have recalled forward Chris Wright from the Dakota Wizards, who were eliminated from the D-League playoffs yesterday by the Bakersfield Jam. Wright averaged 17.9 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 1.8 blocks per game in 11 games during three separate stints with the Warriors' D-League affiliate. During 19 NBA games this season, the 6'8", 226-pound University of Dayton product averaged 2.1 PPG in 4.8 MPG.

Chris Wright has been assigned by the Warriors to the D-League's Dakota Wizards, according to a team press release. Golden State recalled Wright for a second time last Wednesday, but he'll head back to Dakota to join the team for its playoff series against the Bakersfield Jam.
The Knicks have reassigned Jerome Jordan to the Erie BayHawks, their D-League affiliate, according to the team's official Twitter account. New York has previously assigned Jordan to Erie in January and March, so this is the last time this season he can be sent down this year. The BayHawks' season could be nearing its end anyway — they'll face the Austin Toros in the playoffs starting this weekend.

The Warriors have recalled Chris Wright from their D-League affiliate, according to a team release. Wright had been assigned to the Dakota Wizards on March 24th for the second time this season.
Sean Williams is rejoining the Texas Legends for the rest of the D-League season, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Williams was waived by the Mavericks in March to make room for Kelenna Azubuike, but will return to the team's D-League affiliate, where he spent time earlier this season.
Former NBA veteran Flip Murray will sign with the D-League's Austin Toros, according to Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio (via Twitter). Murray played for eight NBA teams in eight seasons, last seeing NBA action with the Bulls in the 2010 playoffs. The 32-year-old averaged 9.9 points in 22.7 minutes per contest over the course of 487 career games.

Pacific Notes: Wright, Bryant, Bynum

One Pacific Division team, the Clippers, picked up a win over the Grizzlies in the day's only matinee, while two more Pacific teams, the Warriors and Kings, meet tonight. They're all chasing the first-place Lakers, who look well in control following the acquisition of Ramon Sessions last week. Here's what going on along the West coast:

The Warriors have sent forward Chris Wright to the Dakota Wizards of the D-League, according to a statement released by the team. Wright, in his first NBA season, has averaged 2.1 points and 1.1 rebounds in limited action during 17 games this year. The team has signed big men Mickell Gladness and Keith Benson in recent days, pushing the 6'8", 226-pound Wright farther down the bench.
Ben Golliver, writing for CBS Sports, takes a look at the desire of Lakers executive Jim Buss, son of owner Jerry Buss, to keep Kobe Bryant past his current contract, which expires after two more seasons. Golliver believes making Bryant a "Laker for life" will be an expensive proposition.
The Lakers have a $16.1MM option on Andrew Bynum next season, but there's little doubt they'll exercise it, especially given his continued development this season, as chronicled by Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Times.

Decisions On Non-Guaranteed Contracts

February 10th marks the day that all players on non-guaranteed contracts will have their deals guaranteed for the remainder of the season. However, if a team wants to meet that Friday deadline, it will need to make its decisions today, allowing its player(s) to pass through waivers in time.

Some non-guaranteed players, such as DeJuan Blair and Jeremy Lin, are in no danger of being waived. However, with a few dozen players on non-guaranteed deals across the league, there will be plenty of cuts before the day is out. Some of those players will sign 10-day contracts shortly after being cut, while others could join the D-League or find a place on our list of current unrestricted free agents.

The Clippers have cut Solomon Jones, reports Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times (via Twitter).
The Heat have waived Mickell Gladness, the team announced (Twitter link). Miami's other two players on non-guaranteed deals, Eddy Curry and Terrel Harris, look safe, tweets Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
The Grizzlies have waived Josh Davis, according to Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
The Spurs announced they've waived Malcolm Thomas, who was assigned to the team's D-League affiliate last week.
