Bobcats Re-Sign DJ White To 10-Day Contract

The Bobcats have re-signed power forward DJ White to a second 10-day contract, the team announced via press release. White’s first 10-day deal with the team expired last night.

The team brought him aboard to shore up its depth inside, but the Bobcats have had little use for him so far, putting him in just one game for a total of four minutes. Still, the front office is familiar with his game, having had him during the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. The Jeff Wechsler client has spent most of the season in China, where he averaged 20.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Sichuan Blue Whales.

Charlotte’s move fills the team’s final open roster spot once more. The Bobcats will have to decide whether to keep White for the rest of the season or part ways at the end of his second 10-day contract. Last year, Boston picked him up out of China and gave him a pair of 10-day contracts before keeping him for the season. The Celtics also included a non-guaranteed season for 2013/14 in his deal, but they traded him to the Nets, who waived him over the summer.

Bobcats Sign DJ White To 10-Day Deal

FRIDAY, 10:53am: The team has officially announced its 10-day deal with White.

WEDNESDAY, 1:24pm: The Bobcats are planning to sign DJ White to a 10-day contract once they receive clearance from FIBA, reports Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer. Shams Charania of RealGM reported earlier today that the team was strongly considering the big man. FIBA, basketball’s international governing body, requires that players switching countries seek clearance from the organization before signing a contract. White has spent most of the season playing in China with the Sichuan Blue Whales. FIBA approval is usually a formality, meaning it’s probably only a matter of time before the 27-year-old joins the Bobcats.

White spent part of 2010/11 and all of 2011/12 with Charlotte, averaging 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 82 appearances as a Bobcat. That’s so far the most productive stretch the former 29th overall pick has enjoyed in the NBA. He made it into a dozen games with Boston last year, but like this season, White spent most of 2012/13 playing in China. The former Indiana Hoosier averaged 20.2 PPG and 8.5 RPG with Sichuan this year, but he did so primarily as a reserve.

The Bobcats appear to envision White as a third-string center, even though he’s only 6’9″. Charlotte worked out a handful of players last week in hopes of finding a center to replace Brendan Haywood, who appears likely to miss the season, but coach Steve Clifford has acknowledged the difficulty of finding free agent pivotmen this time of year, Bonnell notes.

Charlotte has an open roster spot, so the team won’t have to cut anyone to bring White aboard. I speculated that the Bobcats might offer the Jeff Wechsler client a deal for the rest of the season instead of a 10-day contract, but it looks like White will have to prove himself on a short-term deal before the team commits to him for the balance of the year.

Bobcats Strongly Considering D.J. White

The Bobcats are giving strong consideration to signing power forward D.J. White, tweets Shams Charania of RealGM. White’s name didn’t emerge as one of the players reportedly set to work out for the club last week, but he did audition around the same time with the Warriors. Charlotte has apparently been on the lookout for a third center amid the team’s assumption that Brendan Haywood will miss the rest of the season. The 6’9″ White is undersized for that role, but he did play primarily at center for the Bobcats during his 24-game stint with them in 2010/11. Charlotte returned him to power forward the next season.

White recently became a free agent following the completion of his season in China, where he played for the Sichuan Blue Whales. The Jeff Wechsler client is following a familiar path back to the NBA, as he spent much of last season playing in China and returned stateside to sign a deal with the Celtics. The 27-year-old put up 20.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for Sichuan this year, numbers that were similar to the ones he put up in China last year. He appeared for just 7.2 minutes per game in 12 appearances for Boston last season, but his most significant NBA action came with Charlotte, where he made 11 starts and averaged 6.8 PPG and 3.6 RPG in 18.9 minutes per game in 2011/12.

The Bobcats have an open roster spot, so they wouldn’t have to cut anyone to bring White aboard. I imagine the deal would be for a 10-day contract, but given the familiarity that Charlotte’s front office has with him, and the interest from at least one other club, I wouldn’t be shocked if the ‘Cats dispensed with any 10-day offer and gave him a deal for the rest of the season.

Warriors Audition D.J. White

TUESDAY, 4:36pm: Warriors GM Bob Myers confirmed on KNBR radio today that the team worked out White, but Myers is unsure if he’s a fit right now, suggesting that the team could invite the power forward to summer league. Diamond Leung of the Bay Area News Group passes the news along via Twitter.

MONDAY, 5:01pm: The Warriors are auditioning free agent D.J. White today, a source tells Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). The big man has spent time with the Celtics, Thunder, and Bobcats.

White spent time with the Bulls in camp over the summer but didn’t make the cut in the fall and wound up signing with China’s Sichuan Blue Whales. The 27-year-old appeared in 12 games last season for the Celtics and found himself in the Kevin Garnett/Paul Pierce blockbuster but was promptly cut by the Nets. Although the former first-rounder didn’t see the court much in Boston, he has been reasonably productive in parts of five NBA seasons, recording a career PER of 14.6.

International Rumors: Cook, Landry, Johnson

It’s been an active day on the international market, and for Chinese teams in particular. China has been a hub for players fresh off NBA rosters of late, and there’s news linking the country’s Chinese Basketball Association to three more NBA veterans, while a fourth appears to be headed elsewhere. Here’s the latest:

Six-year NBA veteran Daequan Cook has agreed to play for Budivelnyk Kyiv, a Ukrainian club, as Basket.com.ua reports (translation via Sportando). BDA Sports Management handles Cook’s representation, as our Agency Database shows.
Lakers training camp casualty Marcus Landry is a primary target for the Shanghai Sharks of China, who are seeking a replacement for the injured Von Wafer, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com. The 28-year-old Landry is the younger brother of Kings power forward Carl Landry.
Former Timberwolves center Chris Johnson has signed a one-year contract with the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions in China, as Shams Charania of RealGM.com confirms. Sportando contributor David Pick first reported the deal was in the works (via Twitter). Johnson had a guaranteed minimum-salary contract with the Timberwolves, who nonetheless cut him at the end of camp. Depending on how much money the Eric Fleisher client’s new contract is worth, it could trigger set-off rights that would allow Minnesota to pay slightly less than the $916K they owe him. Multiple teams from overseas appear to have been interested in the 6’11” center from LSU, as Charania writes that he was “scouring offers” on the international market.
D.J. White has officially signed with China’s Sichuan Blue Whales, Sportando reports (on Twitter). Stein reported earlier this week that the Blue Whales and the Jeff Wechsler client had agreed to the deal. The Bulls cut White at the end of the preseason.

International Notes: Kings, White, Thornton, Spurs

The Kings are dedicated to expanding their brand internationally, Will Robinson of Reuters reports. Kings president Chris Granger expressed his interest in appealing to NBA fans over in India: “Our overall mission for us is to become India’s home team.” This announcement is hardly surprising since we’ve heard numerous times that David Stern and the NBA as a whole are keen on expanding the league’s presence overseas.

Former first-round pick D.J. White will be returning to China. Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports that the Sichuan Blue Whales are bringing aboard the ex-Bobcats big man. Although White was in Chicago for training camp, he failed to make the Bulls’ opening day roster and most recently saw playing time for the Shanghai Sharks. White will join Hamed Haddadi on the Blue Whales, another former NBA player.
Al Thornton inked an international deal today in Puerto Rico. According to Sportando, the Brujos de Guayama have announced his signing. The former lottery pick hasn’t seen NBA action since 2010/11 when he put up a meager 7.4 PPG for the Wizards and Warriors.
Dan McCarney over at Spurs Nation takes a look at how the Spurs depth is due largely to the team’s excellent assortment of international players. McCarney notes that with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker aging, great play off the bench from “The Foreign Legion” is critical.

Bulls Release Dexter Pittman, D.J. White

The Bulls have placed Dexter Pittman and D.J. White on waivers, the team announced via press release. Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com reported the news shortly before the transactions took place (Twitter link). The moves pare the team’s roster down to 13, the minimum number of players a team can carry in the regular season. Both were on non-guaranteed deals.

Mike James remains the only Bulls player without any guarantee on his contract, so it looks like the 38-year-old guard has made the opening night roster. Second-round pick Erik Murphy, who has a $250K guarantee, also remains with Chicago.

The Bulls are over the luxury tax line, so getting down to 13 players is likely a cost-cutting move for the franchise, which paid the tax for the first time last season.

Bulls To Sign D.J. White

Free agent forward D.J. White will join the Bulls for training camp, according to ESPN.com's Marc Stein (via Twitter). While it sounds as if White will be on a non-guaranteed contract, Stein reports that he'll be given a chance to earn a regular-season roster spot.

White, 27, appeared in 12 games last season for the Celtics after returning from China, but was included in the blockbuster trade that sent him to Brooklyn along with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry. The Nets waived him shortly thereafter, and White was said last month to be mulling another stint in China. Although the former first-rounder didn't see the court much in Boston, he has been reasonably productive in parts of five NBA seasons, recording a career PER of 14.6.

For the Bulls, White will be the 17th player on the camp roster, but only 11 of those 17 guys have fully guaranteed deals. Erik Murphy, who has a $250K guarantee, figures to make the team, but that still leaves as many as three open spots for camp invitees like White, Dexter Pittman, Patrick Christopher, Mike James, and Kalin Lucas. Even if Chicago doesn't carry a full 15-man roster due to tax concerns, at least one – and perhaps two – of those non-guaranteed players should end up on the roster to reach the minimum requirement.

Atlantic Rumors: Wilcox, Blalock, D.J. White, Nets

Dwane Casey might not be on the most solid of footing with the Raptors, but he's the longest tenured coach in the Atlantic Division, where three of the five clubs will debut first-time NBA bench bosses this season. The expectations on Brad Stevens of the Celtics and Brett Brown of the Sixers could probably accomodate a winning percentage similar to the .385 mark Casey has posted in two seasons with Toronto, but Jason Kidd of the Nets will have to do much better than that right away. Here's the latest out of the Atlantic:

Free agent center Chris Wilcox would like to return to the Celtics, but that's a longshot with Stevens and his staff in place, according to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, who passes along the news amid an array of topics in his weekly column. The C's attempted to trade Wilcox at the deadline last season before the veteran center vetoed the move, so it appears the team wasn't too high on him even when former coach Doc Rivers was around.
Will Blalock has just 14 NBA games on his resume, all of them during the 2006/07 season. Still, he maintains hope of making it back to the Association, and he's been working out at the Celtics facility this summer, Washburn notes.
D.J. White spent time with the Celtics last season after a stint in China, and he's weighing options that include offers to play in China again, the former Indiana Hoosier told The Associated Press.
Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov will dish out $180MM+ in salary and luxury tax for his team, but Brooklyn is still without someone who can hit clutch end-of-game shots, as HoopsWorld's Bill Ingram opines in his NBA AM piece.

Sean May, Others Worked Out For Knicks

4:41pm: The workout list just keeps on growing, as Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com tweets that a Lithuanian big man participated as well. It's not clear who exactly the player was.

12:37pm: Wojnarowski adds one more name to the list of players working out for the Knicks today, tweeting that Lester Hudson was also in attendance.

11:18am: D.J. White is the third member of the group working out for the Knicks today, tweets Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com.

11:02am: Former lottery pick Sean May is working out for the Knicks today, a source tells Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (Twitter link). A report yesterday suggested that Bobby Brown and two other players would work out for the Knicks this week, so May appears to be one of those players. The third is also a big man, according to Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com (via Twitter).

May, 29, was selected 13th overall by the Bobcats in the 2005 draft. However, the UNC product ended up only playing a total of 119 NBA games with Charlotte and Sacramento, most recently in 2009/10, before heading overseas. In 2012/13, May played for Paris-Levallois, averaging 18.4 PPG and 7.8 RPG in 29 French League contests.

The Knicks recently added another big man to their frontcourt by signing Jeremy Tyler to a partially-guaranteed two-year contract. The team still has a pair of open roster spots though, and also has plenty of room to bring in players on training-camp invites.
