Free Agent Notes: White, Bell, Fisher

The trade deadline may have passed but that won't keep teams from finding an extra piece or two to help right the ship. Here's the latest news and rumors surrounding players who may be finding a new home in the coming days…
  • Doc Rivers says the Celtics are close to signing D.J. White to a deal in hopes of providing depth off the bench as a big man, writes Chris Forsberg of ESPNBoston.com (on Twitter). The team would like to bring in one more frontcourt player to add to the roster. 
  • The Lakers remain hopeful the Jazz buy out the remainder of Raja Bell's contract so that the veteran can sign with Los Angeles, according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld (via Twitter). The 36-year-old shooting guard would be counted on to provide strong defense and long-distance shooting.
  • Derek Fisher remains another option available for the Lakers as the long-time veteran is eager to return to the court, writes Kennedy (on Twitter). Fisher continues to work out regularly in Las Vegas and has stayed in close contact with Kobe Bryant since being traded to the Rockets last season.

Celtics Eyeing D.J. White

The Celtics bolstered their backcourt with the acquisition of Jordan Crawford yesterday, but trading Jason Collins in the deal still leaves the team a little light on frontcourt bodies. In their search for free agent help, the Celtics are considering signing D.J. White to a 10-day contract, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com (via Twitter).

White, 26, played four NBA seasons with the Thunder and Bobcats, and was actually reasonably productive for Charlotte last season, averaging 6.8 PPG and 3.6 RPG in 18.9 MPG over 58 contests. He didn't land an NBA contract in free agency last summer though, instead heading overseas to play in China with the Shanghai Sharks.

As we heard near the end of January, the Sharks fell out of contention for a CBA playoff spot, so White is eligible to return stateside now that his season is over in China. The 6'8" forward averaged 21.6 PPG and 9.7 RPG in 32 games for Shanghai this year.

Even after signing Terrence Williams to a 10-day contract, the Celtics only have 13 players on their roster, so the club wouldn't have to release anyone to clear room for White or another free agent.

Odds & Ends: Pacers, Gelabale, Joseph, Wolves

Tonight's schedule includes a battle for Western Conference positioning between the Rockets and Jazz, Andrew Bogut's possible return to the court for the Warriors, and an opportunity for the Wizards to win their third straight game (and eighth of their last 11). As we look forward to the evening's slate of games, let's check out a few odds and ends from around the NBA….

  • Dominic McGuire's second 10-day contract with the Pacers has expired, and the team has elected to let him go rather than sign him to a rest-of-season deal. According to Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star (via Twitter), the Pacers will likely bring back Sam Young, though it's not clear whether he'll get a 10-day contract or a rest-of-season deal. Indiana released Young before his contract became guaranteed, and shortly after he suffered an ankle sprain.
  • Agent Bill McCandless expects the Timberwolves to keep Mickael Gelabale for more than just one 10-day contract, as he tells Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype: "Based on my conversations with Timberwolves management, I understand that Minnesota is very likely to offer M.G. a second 10-day contract." (Twitter links).
  • With Sacramento and Seattle potentially set to battle over the Kings, Neema Hodjat of RealGM.com makes a case for why the NBA should consider expansion as an alternative to relocation.
  • We heard last week that Kris Joseph had signed a contract to play for Orleans in France, but David Pick of Sportando reports (via Twitter) that Joseph backed out of that deal for a possible D-League offer.
  • A.J. Mitnick of Sheridan Hoops makes his early picks for the top 10 European prospects of the 2013 draft class.
  • Tracy McGrady, Gilbert Arenas, and D.J. White are among the former NBA players in China whose CBA teams won't qualify for the postseason, according to Shaopeng Shen of Hupu.com (via Twitter). As such, those players would be free to return to the NBA sooner, assuming there's any interest.
  • The Timberwolves received a disabled player exception worth about $381K for Malcolm Lee, tweets Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times and HoopsWorld. Considering how small that amount is, the team is unlikely to use the exception.

Bobby Brown May Join NBA This Season, D.J. White Next?

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that Montepaschi Siena point guard Bobby Brown, who is currently the Euroleague's leading scorer and is in strong contention for Most Valuable Player, could become a free agent and will be available to join an NBA team this season. Although going undrafted after entering the 2007 NBA Draft, Brown found his way into opportunities with the Timberwolves, Kings, Hornets, and Clippers, playing a combined 113 games and averaging 5.1 PPG and 1.8 APG in 12.8 MPG for his career. 

In Italy, Brown currently boasts averages of 21 PPG, 5.9 APG, while shooting 46.4% from two-point range, 40.2% from long-distance, and 89.3% from the charity stripe. Despite Brown's success, Siena may not have the financial ability to retain the 28-year-old former standout from Cal State Fullerton for the long-term. Wojnarowski also mentions that several NBA teams have already inquired about bringing in the 6'2 Brown as a back up point guard.

Another name that Wojnarowski says to keep in mind is 6'8 forward D.J. White, who is currently playing for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association and will be eligible to sign with an NBA team after the conclusion of the CBA's season in February. The five-year veteran has been averaging 22.6 PPG and 10.6 PPG for Shanghai and holds NBA career averages of 6.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG, and 50.7% shooting from the field in 16.3 MPG. He last played for the Bobcats during the 2011-12 season.

D.J. White To Sign With Shanghai Sharks

Free agent forward D.J. White has agreed to terms with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter). The deal will be for one year, with White eligible to join an NBA team in March when the CBA season ends, says Wojnarowski (Twitter link).

White spent the 2011/12 season with the Bobcats after the club acquired him in a trade with the Thunder at the 2011 trade deadline. He earned 11 starts for Charlotte, and in 58 overall contests, averaged 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

The 6'9" forward hasn't seen a ton of playing time in his four NBA seasons, but has recorded a solid 14.5 career PER in his 124 career games. That wasn't enough to earn a qualifying offer from the Bobcats this summer though, as the team allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported last Friday that the Sharks were heavily pursuing White.

Bulls Rumors: Pargo, White, Allen, Gibson

The Bulls find themselves in a pickle as training camp approaches, with a $73.55MM payroll that bumps up against a hard cap of $74.3MM invoked when they exceeded the taxpayer's mid-level exception to sign Kirk Hinrich. That gives them enough room for a rookie on a minimum-salary deal of $473,604, and they might be able to squeeze in a one-year vet at the $762,195 minimum, depending on the accuracy of their reported salaries. Aside from that, they'll have to get rid of one of their contracts to add anyone else to the regular season roster. The team could swing a trade or waive Nate Robinson and his partially guaranteed contract to find a place for Andre Emmett, a player with two years of experience who'll be in training camp on a non-guaranteed deal. Still, the team appears to continue to look around for additional free agent help, as Aggrey Sam of CSNChicago.com chronicles. 

  • Sam hears that free agents Jannero Pargo, D.J. White and Ryan Allen are joining many of the Bulls for voluntary workouts in Chicago leading up to the opening of camp. Allen is the brother of Grizzlies guard Tony Allen, and is a native of Chicago. Pargo is having discussions with a few NBA teams, as we heard yesterday, and White is reportedly drawing interest from multiple teams overseas.
  • Taj Gibson indicated earlier this month that talks were under way about an extension, and agent Mark Bartelstein confirms that to Sam. "It's something we've been talking about for a while," Bartelstein said. "(GM) Gar (Forman) and I have been putting a lot of work in. Taj would love to be a Bull for a long time, there's no question about that."
  • The Bulls place a high value on Gibson and privately "acknowledge he's a keeper," Sam writes, but the presence of Carlos Boozer, who has three years and $47.1MM left on his contract, at his position complicates matters. The Bulls have an October 31st deadline to extend Gibson and keep him from becoming a restricted free agent next summer.

Free Agent Notes: D.J. White, Whiteside, Yi

As teams continue to fill out their training camp rosters with free agent signings, Eric Pincus of HoopsWorld takes a look at which clubs still have cap space or various cap exceptions. Pincus' piece is worth checking out for an update on where your favorite teams stands, financially, and it also provides one important reminder: When the season begins, sign-and-trade deals are no longer permitted. Given the rule changes coming next summer, these next few weeks will be the last opportunity taxpaying teams will have to conduct sign-and-trade deals under the current CBA.

Here's the latest on a few free agents still looking for work:

  • ESPN.com's Marc Stein passes along "word from China" suggesting that the Shanghai Sharks are strongly pursuing unrestricted free agent D.J. White (Twitter link). We heard earlier this week that White was drawing interest from Israel.
  • GM David Kahn and the Timberwolves have been doing extensive due diligence on Hassan Whiteside, says Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500, who believes the big man is a good bet to join the T-Wolves (Twitter links).
  • Gino Pilato of Ridiculous Upside looks at whether Yi Jianlian's NBA window could be closing, and wonders if the former lottery pick would give the D-League a shot if it provided the best path back to the NBA.
  • Matt Dickey, who went undrafted out of UNC Asheville, is hoping to join the D-League for the coming season, according to Keith Schlosser of Ridiculous Upside.

Eastern Notes: Gomes, Bobcats, White, Sixers

This morning, we learned that the Magic are expected to sign Armon Johnson and DeQuan Jones to non-guaranteed contracts. That's one of a handful of items related to Eastern Conference teams today, so let's round up the rest right here:

  • Although he worked out with the team recently, it doesn't sound as if Ryan Gomes will be in training camp with the Bobcats, tweets Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.
  • Unrestricted free agent D.J. White spent the last season and a half with the Bobcats, but it doesn't appear he'll be back in Charlotte either. David Pick of Sportando reports that White is drawing interest from Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv.
  • After receiving head coach consideration this offseason, Michael Curry will return to the 76ers' staff, and coach Doug Collins is elated to have him back, writes Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News.
  • The Celtics have added former Erie BayHawks head coach Jay Larranaga to their staff as an assistant coach, the team announced today in a press release. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports first reported the hire last month.
  • Asked whether Ray Allen or Rashard Lewis will provide the Heat more "bang for the buck," Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel says Lewis "could be a revelation" if he provides some rebounding and defense for Miami.

Odds & Ends: Tolliver, Rubio, Knicks

Anthony Tolliver has been working out with several Timberwolves players, namely Brandon Roy and Chase Budinger (Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune tweets). Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN (via Twitter) looks at it as a sign that Tolliver "badly" wants to remain in Minnesota next year. In another tweet, Zgoda caught Nikola Pekovic's thoughts regarding Ricky Rubio, saying that while the Spanish point guard looks good and hopes to be running again next week, he is still aiming for a return in December. D.J. White Visiting Teams, Hopes To Sign Soon

Unrestricted free agent D.J. White had planned to visit "a couple teams" this week, and hopes to decide on a new club soon, according to Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com (via Twitter). It's not clear which specific teams might be in on White, but the 26-year-old expects to sign somewhere before camps begin.

"I have a couple options," White said (Twitter link). "I just want to be in a position to succeed. Hopefully I know my future in a couple weeks."

White spent the 2011/12 season with the Bobcats after the club acquired him in a trade with the Thunder at the 2011 trade deadline. He earned 11 starts for Charlotte, and in 58 overall contests, averaged 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. The 6'9" forward has seen limited action in his first four NBA seasons, but has shown some promise, recording a 14.5 career PER. Still, it wasn't enough to earn a qualifying offer from the Bobcats, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

As Zwerling notes (on Twitter), White isn't the only power forward expected to land with an NBA team in the coming weeks. Louis Amundson, Andray Blatche, and Chris Andersen are among the other bigs talking to teams, in search of a new contract.
