Kyler On Grizzlies, Magic, Redick, Leonard

Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld.com answered some questions from followers on his Twitter account Saturday morning, addressing a variety of trade rumors and speculation.

Kyler doesn't think the Grizzlies will trade Rudy Gay unless it makes them better in the short term. He notes that the recent trade of Marreese Speights, Josh Selby, and Wayne Ellington to the Cavs was their method of getting under the luxury tax, which will make them more hesitant to trade Gay.
Similarly, Kyler doesn't think Memphis will move Zach Randolph this season, although he points out that it could happen this summer as Randolph gets older.
Kyler doesn't see any way that Gay ends up with the Lakers.
The Magic are not interested in trading for Danny Granger, due to the potential of his health and contract to impact their rebuilding timeline.
While Kyler thinks J.J. Redick would be a good fit for the Spurs, he says they are not willing to part with Kawhi Leonard, whom they see as a building block for the future.

Ford’s Latest: Bargnani, Kings, Granger, Draft

Chad Ford's latest chat at ESPN.com includes a handful of trade-related inquiries along with plenty of draft questions. Let's dive in and check out the highlights from both categories….

While the Raptors would likely move Andrea Bargnani for any decent offer, Ford hasn't spoken to any general managers that are excited about making an offer for the former first overall pick.
The Kings could still be active before the trade deadline, but the Maloofs are still in charge of any decisions until the NBA Board of Governors makes a decision on the sale of the franchise. As such, most rival teams view the Kings' assets as "essentially frozen" for now.
Danny Granger is receiving assurances from the Pacers that he won't be traded, but Ford thinks Indiana would change that stance if the right offer came along. A young power forward or point guard could interest the Pacers, says Ford.
Ford spoke to five different NBA GMs this week who said they'd take Kansas guard Ben McLemore first overall next June.
Ford also adds that McLemore would be at the top of his personal top-five list for 2013, with UNLV's Anthony Bennett and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State right behind him.

Bucher On Granger, CP3, Raptors, Cavs, McGuire

Ric Bucher of 95.7 The Game is covering the Warriors these days, but the former ESPN reporter still comes across plenty of leaguewide news, as he did with his story today on the Magic, who are in no hurry to trade J.J. Redick, as Bucher reports. He shared a few more tidbits in a chat for CSNBayArea.com, and we'll round up the highlights:

The Pacers "desperately" want Paul George to emerge as their No. 1 option so they can trade Danny Granger, who's out for the first half of the season. The problem is George hasn't exactly distinguished himself as such this year. Many of his numbers are up, but that's partly because of his increased responsibilties with Granger out. George's field goal percentage is down, as are his win shares per 48 minutes, while his PER is up only slightly, to 16.7 from 16.5 last season. Granger is due about $13MM this year and $14MM for the final year of his deal in 2013/14.
Executives on teams other than the Clippers have told Bucher that Chris Paul isn't as satisfied in L.A., or playing with Blake Griffin, as he seems, though Bucher isn't sure whether the executives might be spinning that information in the hopes Paul will turn his attention elsewhere in free agency next summer.
The Raptors and Cavs are eager to make a trade, according to Bucher, who adds that he thinks at least one deal will get done either this month or next. Aside from that, most teams are playing it cool with still more than two months to go before the trade deadline.
Dominic McGuire signed with the Hornets this weekend, but Bucher says he really wanted to go back to the Warriors, for whom he played last season. Golden State, off to a 16-8 start, is content with its roster, which is at the 15-player limit.

Pacers Notes: Stephenson, Granger, West

Mark Montieth of Pacers.com has a new mailbag column that addresses several topics relating to the Pacers, who are off to a disappointing start to the 2012/13 season. Here are the highlights:

Monteith believes the hot start to the season for Lance Stephenson is sustainable because of the fundamentally sound form to his shooting stroke.
Despite the hole that Danny Granger's injury creates in the team's lineup, Monteith writes that Donnie Walsh is not presently planning to pursue a trade or free agent as a stopgap.
The Pacers want to keep forward David West, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. However, Monteith doesn't believe they will discuss an extension before summer.
Monteith doesn't think rookies Orlando Johnson and Ben Hansbrough will see playing time anytime soon, because it would throw an already-uncertain rotation even further off.

Pacers Unlikely To Add Veteran?

With Danny Granger on the shelf for up to three months, the Pacers have been linked to Mickael Pietrus. With championship expectations, most expected Indiana to make a move to bolster their lineup in hopes of staying afloat without their star forward. Not so fast, says Andrew Perna of RealGM, who has heard that the team is not expected to add anyone in the immediate future.

The Pacers are 2-3 headed into Friday night's matchup in Minnesota. While Granger was the subject of some trade speculation earlier in the year, it was quickly quashed by the team. If the Pacers would be better off without Granger, as some executives had hinted, the next three months will go a long way to helping them determine that. Sam Young and Gerald Green may receive the biggest uptick in playing time, but expect the emerging Paul George to have the biggest opportunity to shine in Granger's absence.

Danny Granger Expected To Miss Three Months

The Pacers' prospects for 2012/13 suffered a huge blow today, as the team announced that Danny Granger could be out until February. According to the Pacers, Granger received an injection from Dr. James Andrews to treat left patellar tendinosis. The veteran forward's recovery time is expected to be "approximately three months."

While the Pacers have managed to play .500 ball very early in the regular season without Granger, they were expected to be a top-four club in the Eastern Conference this year, a goal it will be difficult to meet without their top scorer. The 29-year-old averaged 18.7 PPG for Indiana last season, slightly above his career mark of 18.2 PPG with the team.

It remains to be seen whether the Pacers to make a roster move at any point to add depth at the wing, but for now I'd assume the club will let Paul George and others attempt to make up for at least part of Granger's production. Although the Pacers are carrying the maximum 15 players, one of those 15 is Ben Hansbrough, whose contract is non-guaranteed, so the team has the flexibility to make a move if necessary.

Pacers Won’t Look To Move Danny Granger

The Pacers are set to enter the 2012/13 season with their strongest lineup in the post-Malice at the Palace era, but some around basketball still question how far the team can get with Danny Granger as their star player. However, General Manager Kevin Pritchard told Bill Ingram of HoopsWorld that he believes the team can accomplish much more with the forward in the fold.

“Danny was put into a position a few years ago where he needed to score a lot and now we don’t need his scoring as much, we need his overall game and he’s a heck of an overall player…He’s shown to be very unselfish, he’s given up a lot of his offense to be a better defensive player last year," the GM said. We got the fifth-best record in the league last year, you don’t just say, 'We don’t need him.' That’s a bunch of baloney. I don’t believe that.”

Granger, 29, has two years remaining on a five-year, $60MM contract extension inked on Halloween of 2008. The deal was backloaded with 10% escalation in each season, putting Indiana on the hook for $13.06MM this season and $14.02MM in 2013/14.

Granger has seen his PPG average steadily dip across the last four seasons, from 25.7 in 2008/09 to 20.2 last season. However, as Pritchard eluded to, the current makeup of the club demands less shooting out of the forward. In 2011/12, Granger averaged 16.4 shot attempts per game versus a career high of 19 in 2008/09.

New Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry looks to make his debut with the team on Wednesday night, reports Jay Satur from Raptors.com. Lowry has been battling a groin injury this offseason.
Lakers forward Earl Clark is out indefintely with a groin injury, reports ESPNLA.com's Andy Kamenetzky. Clark came over from Orlando in the Dwight Howard trade earlier this summer.
Recovering from a bone bruise in his left knee, Amare Stoudemire plans to make his preseason debut on Friday, reports Newsday's Al Iannazzone.
After sitting out last Friday night's preseason game with a sore groin, Bulls forward Luol Deng will play Tuesday night against the Bucks, reports ESPNChicago.com's Nick Friedell.
Still recovering from a platelet-rich plasma injection he received in September, Pacers forward Danny Granger is aiming to make a return for the last two games of the preseason, reports Pacers.com writer Mark Montieth.

Odds & Ends: Timberwolves, Nets, Daniels

There's a chance that Minnesota could bring Hassan Whiteside into training camp, but Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 believes that it would have to be a non-guaranteed contract. Kennedy On Brown, Lakers, 2014 Free Agent Class

Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld has weighed in today on several relevant NBA topics, including the expectations placed on the Lakers and their options in free agency in coming years:

Kennedy tweets that Mike Brown will likely receive the majority of blame if the Lakers fall short of their championship aspirations following the additions of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard this offseason.
Kennedy also tweets that he would be surprised if Howard did not re-sign with the Lakers when he hits free agency in July 2013.
In a Sulia post, Kennedy takes a look at the 2014 free agent class, some of which could be options for the Lakers. Top players available include Carmelo Anthony, Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce, Danny Granger, and, should they choose to opt out of their contracts in Miami, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
In the same post, Kennedy quotes an anonymous NBA executive as believing the 2014 class has the potential to be more impressive than that of 2010.
