Cavaliers Finalizing Deal With David Nwaba

The Cavaliers have agreed to sign free agent swingman David Nwaba, reports Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). According to Charania and Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com (Twitter link), Nwaba and the Cavs are still in the process of finalizing the details of the deal.

A former undrafted free agent, Nwaba had a solid season for the Bulls in 2017/18, averaging 7.9 PPG and 4.7 RPG while playing strong perimeter defense in 70 games (21 starts). He opened the month of July as a restricted free agent, but when Chicago made a series of cost-cutting moves to create the cap room necessary to sign Jabari Parker, rescinding Nwaba’s qualifying offer was one of those moves.

After Nwaba became an unrestricted free agent, Vardon reported that there was mutual interest between the 25-year-old and the Cavaliers. Nwaba also reportedly drew interest from the Lakers and Spurs, and Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News tweets that there was “lots of dialogue” with the Timberwolves, but Cleveland was aggressive in its pursuit.

According to Charania (via Twitter), the Cavs were in touch with Nwaba from the very first day of free agency and recruited him hard, meeting last week with the Los Angeles native.

While the terms of Nwaba’s deal with the Cavs aren’t yet known, the team has plenty of options for what it could have offered. Cleveland is over the cap, but still has its full mid-level and bi-annual exceptions available.

Nwaba will only be the 12th Cavaliers player on a fully guaranteed contract for 2018/19, though the club also has decisions to make on Rodney Hood‘s restricted free agency and Okaro White‘s non-guaranteed salary. With approximately $108MM in guaranteed money on their books before signing Nwaba or accounting for Hood or White, the Cavs will have one eye on the $123.73MM tax line as they fill out their roster.

Cavaliers, David Nwaba Have Mutual Interest

The Cavaliers, who were linked to Luke Babbitt and Trevor Booker over the weekend, continue to explore the free agent market as they consider how to fill out their roster. According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, the club has spoken with free agent swingman David Nwaba, who has reciprocated the Cavs’ interest.

After opening the month as a restricted free agent, Nwaba had his qualifying offer rescinded by the Bulls on July 12. The 25-year-old reportedly drew interest from the Lakers, Spurs, and other teams upon becoming an unrestricted free agent, but he has yet find a new NBA home.

A former undrafted free agent, Nwaba had a solid season for the Bulls in 2017/18, averaging 7.9 PPG and 4.7 RPG while playing strong perimeter defense in 70 games (21 starts). He was considered a candidate to receive a solid multiyear deal in free agency this summer, but with roster spots and spending power dwindling around the league, it’s no longer clear what sort of payday Nwaba could realistically seek.

Nwaba would be an interesting target for the Cavs, who still have their full mid-level exception available and could use another strong defender in the wing. However, Cleveland’s cap situation remains uncertain as long as restricted free agent Rodney Hood stays unsigned.

Vardon indicated on Friday that the Cavs are still negotiating a possible deal with Hood. If he receives a starting salary in the $10-12MM range, it would put Cleveland’s team salary right up against the luxury-tax line. That would leave little flexibility to add any other players for more than the minimum — unless, of course, team owner Dan Gilbert is willing to go back into the tax for a roster that no longer features LeBron James. Trades or cuts could also create a little extra spending power below the tax line for the Cavs.

Pacific Notes: Walton, Nwaba, Clippers, Jerebko

LeBron James and Lakers coach Luke Walton held their first face-to-face meeting this weekend, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reports. They had only communicated by text prior to chatting in Las Vegas when James visited the summer league playoffs. So far, so good between the young coach and the league’s premier player, according to Shelburne.

“He’s about the team. He’s about doing things the right way, and he’s about winning,” Walton said. “I can work with those qualities.” The Lakers’ head coach had previously reached out to some of James’ former coaches and teamates to get a better handle on what to expect when coaching James, Shelburne adds.

Restricted free agent Rodney Hood and unrestricted FA guard David Nwaba are potential targets for the Kings in the dwindling market, James Ham of NBC Sports Bay Area speculates. Sacramento could also ease its frontcourt logjam via a deal or simply wait until the market heats up again during the February trade deadline, Ham adds.
The Clippers’ moves have put them in a position to contend for a playoff berth but they might be better off falling out of the race quickly, Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times opines. Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Avery Bradley and Luc Mbah a Moute could turn into valuable trade pieces that could land them some prospects and additional draft picks, Woike explains. That would likely be a better outcome for the franchise’s long-term health than squeaking into the playoffs, Woike adds.
Veteran forward Jonas Jerebko jumped at the chance to join the Warriors, Logan Murdock of the San Jose Mercury News tweets. “My agent called and said the Warriors were interested and after that, it was a wrap,” Jerebko told Murdock. “When the best team in the world calls, you answer.” Jerebko signed a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal with Golden State shortly after being waived by the Jazz.

Spurs, Lakers, Others Eyeing David Nwaba

David Nwaba is no longer a restricted free agent, meaning he can sign outright with any NBA team, and interested clubs are checking in on the young shooting guard. According to TNT’s David Aldridge (Twitter link), several teams have reached out to Nwaba, including the Spurs and Lakers. There’s no clear frontrunner at this point, Aldridge adds.

Nwaba, who was eligible for restricted free agency this summer, received a qualifying offer from the Bulls last month, giving the team the right of first refusal on any offer sheet he signed. However, Chicago withdrew that QO on Thursday, despite its modest price ($1.7MM), leading to speculation that the club is maximizing its cap room for a bigger move.

Despite making Nwaba an unrestricted free agent, the Bulls haven’t given up hope of re-signing him. Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer tweets that the Bulls have interest in using the room exception to bring back Nwaba after they use up their cap space. A source confirmed to K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune that the team hasn’t ruled out re-signing Nwaba once it completes other business.

In order to retain Nwaba though, the Bulls would have to count on the 25-year-old waiting out the team’s other move(s) and being willing to accept the $4.45MM room exception. Those aren’t unreasonable requests, but if Nwaba gets a comparable offer from another suitor, he may not want to wait on Chicago.

Bulls Rescind QO For David Nwaba

The Bulls have rescinded their qualifying offer for David Nwaba, tweets Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports. The second-year guard will now be an unrestricted free agent.

Nwaba was productive in his lone season with the Bulls, starting 21 of 70 games and averaging 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per night. Chicago claimed him off waivers last summer after he spent his rookie season with the Lakers.

The unrestricted status should improve the offers for Nwaba, who has reportedly already received a “barrage” of interest from around the league. Nwaba ranks 42nd on our list of the Top 50 Free Agents of 2018.

Friday is the deadline for teams to rescind qualifying offers for NBA and two-way restricted free agents. Any QOs kept active after tomorrow cannot be withdrawn for the remainder of the summer without the player’s consent.

Free Agent Rumors: Mbah A Moute, Capela, Nwaba

While the Rockets secured their top target in free agency over the weekend when they reached a four-year, maximum-salary contract agreement with Chris Paul, the club has plenty of other free agents to address.

Houston agreed to re-sign Gerald Green, but lost Trevor Ariza to Phoenix, increasing the pressure to re-sign Luc Mbah a Moute. For his part, Mbah a Moute is very open to a return, writes Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle.

“Of course, I want to be here, yeah,” Mbah a Moute said. “I think we had a great year last year. I had a good year. The team did great, a game away from the Finals. Hopefully, we’ll bring everybody back. I know Trevor left. But to bring everybody else back and have the same team and try to go at it again, (that) is what I’m hoping to do. We’ll see what happens.”

Here are a few other free agent notes and rumors, including more on the Rockets:

Clint Capela is perhaps the top free agent still on the board, and his restricted free agency will be fascinating to watch. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported earlier this week that – after meeting with the Rockets – Capela’s agent called at least 10 teams around the league, perhaps exploring whether any club might be willing to do an offer sheet (Twitter link via Ben DuBose). However, Orazio Cauchi of Sportando hears from a source that potential suitors are wary of Houston matching any offer.
Cauchi’s source suggests that Capela may be leaning toward signing his qualifying offer, which would allow the big man to become an unrestricted free agent and sign with any team in 2019. Of course, that could be a negotiating tactic — if the Rockets are worried about the possibility of Capela bolting a year from now, it may push them to increase their current offer to him. For what it’s worth, the initial offer from Houston was considered “disappointing” by Capela’s camp, according to Cauchi’s source.
Bulls restricted free agent David Nwaba has received a “barrage” of interest from around the NBA, tweets Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports. We heard earlier this week that Chicago was open to sign-and-trade offers for Nwaba.

Bulls Open To Sign-And-Trade Offers For Nwaba

The Bulls and restricted free agent David Nwaba are at a stalemate in negotiations, according to Michael Scotto of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that the club is open to sign-and-trade offers for Nwaba. The 25-year old wing has received interest from several teams, Scotto notes.

While a team typically doesn’t have a ton of leverage when looking to accommodate a sign-and-trade, the restricted nature of Nwaba’s free agency gives the Bulls some options. A rival suitor interested in signing the RFA may be willing to send an asset Chicago’s way in order to secure Nwaba’s services, rather than risking an offer sheet that the Bulls could match.

A club that acquires Nwaba – or any other player – in a sign-and-trade deal would be hard-capped at $129.817MM for the 2018/19 league year.

Nwaba earned a rotation role for the Bulls in 2017/18, averaging 7.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 1.5 APG in 70 games (23.5 MPG). While the 25-year-old’s offensive game is somewhat limited, he’s a strong perimeter defender.

A little less than a month ago, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports identified Nwaba as an under-the-radar candidate to earn a solid deal in free agency, suggesting that the swingman could land $5MM+ annually. It will be interesting to see if Nwaba meets that projection with cap room drying up around the NBA.

Free Agent Rumors: Gordon, Brewer, Favors

While the Magic plan to pursue a long-term deal with restricted free agent Aaron Gordon, another team to keep an eye on is the Lakers, Marc Spears of ESPN tweets.

It’s no surprise that Gordon, a 23-year-old fresh off of a career year with averages of 17.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, is generating interest in free agency but Zach Lowe of ESPN writes that Orlando may not have much pressure to go as high as the max to retain him.

The Lakers join a number of other teams apparently interested in poaching Gordon’s services, including the Pacers (story) and Kings (story).

The Rockets have scheduled a meeting with free agent wing James Nunnally, per international basketball reporter David Pick (Twitter link). Nunnally, who has also been linked to Portland and Minnesota, played for Turkish team Fenerbahce last season and knocked down 55% of his three-pointers in EuroLeague play, making him an interesting fit for Houston.
Having already been linked to several potential targets since the free agent period opened, the Timberwolves have also “planted seeds” with Corey Brewer and Davis Bertans, according to Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News (Twitter link). As Wolfson observes, Minnesota has made a habit in recent years of spreading a wide net in free agency, inquiring on dozens of players.
In a later tweet, Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News added that the Timberwolves have also checked in on Derrick Favors, Mike Scott, David Nwaba and Ian Clark.

Bulls Extend Qualifying Offer To David Nwaba

The Bulls have issued a qualifying offer to shooting guard David Nwaba, ensuring that he’ll become a restricted free agent on Sunday, reports Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter).

The move had been expected, since Nwaba’s qualifying offer will only be worth about $1.7MM and he has developed into a solid rotation player over the course of two NBA seasons. In 2017/18, Nwaba averaged 7.9 PPG and 4.7 RPG in 70 games (23.5 MPG) for the Bulls. The 25-year-old is also viewed as a strong perimeter defender.

Nwaba will now have the option of accepting his one-year qualifying offer, negotiating a new agreement with the Bulls, or trying to secure an offer sheet from a rival suitor. If Nwaba signs with another team, Chicago would have two days to decide whether or not to match his offer sheet.

Nwaba is one of three Bulls veterans eligible for restricted free agency this summer. Zach LaVine and Noah Vonleh are in line for qualifying offers worth approximately $4.33MM — LaVine is a lock to receive one, while Vonleh isn’t.

Central Notes: Casey, Nwaba, Bulls, Pacers

While Dwane Casey was always viewed as a strong candidate for the Pistons‘ head coaching job, right up until the team hired him on Monday, the former Raptors coach seriously considered taking a year off, tweets Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca. As Lewenberg observes though, the Pistons really sold Casey on their situation, and sitting around isn’t really in his nature anyway.

TNT’s David Aldridge provides further context on Casey’s decision, tweeting that the veteran coach wasn’t inclined to accept the job as recently as Saturday morning. However, Pistons ownership and management – led by Tom Gores – put the “full-court press” on in order to finalize a deal.

According to Aldridge, one concession the Pistons made was letting Casey pick his assistants. Vince Ellis of The Detroit Free Press (Twitter link) hears from a source that there was no pressure from ownership to pick Casey’s assistants for him, and Aldridge notes the team’s denial, but insists that multiple sources say otherwise (Twitter link). As Aldridge notes, it wouldn’t have been unprecedented for Casey to inherit some assistants that Pistons management likes, and it’s possible he’ll do just that, but he won’t be obligated to do so.

With his restricted free agency approaching, Bulls swingman David Nwaba has hired new representation, signing with agent Charles Briscoe, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). Charania previously identified Nwaba as an under-the-radar RFA target who should generate plenty of interest this summer.
When word of Jimmy Butler‘s trade broke last June, Butler’s trainer Travelle Gaines made some pointed comments about the Bulls and GM Gar Forman in a now-deleted tweet. However, as he tells Vincent Goodwill of NBC Sports Chicago, Gaines doesn’t “feel the Bulls are a bad organization or franchise” and wouldn’t steer current clients like Trae Young away from Chicago.
As Thaddeus Young considers opting out of his contract, ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes (via Twitter) that the Pacers could easily carve out about $23MM in cap space if Young walks. Meanwhile, J. Michael and Scott Horner of The Indianapolis Star identify some free agents the Pacers could go after with that space.
