Grizzlies Cut Kris Dunn, Two Others

The Grizzlies have waived former lottery pick Kris Dunn, the team announced today in a press release. Matthew Hurt and David Stockton have also been cut, as Memphis finalizes its roster for the regular season.

Dunn, 27, began his career with Minnesota after being selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2016 draft. He was later sent to Chicago in the Jimmy Butler trade and spent three years with the Bulls before signing with Atlanta during the 2020 offseason.

Dunn has struggled to produce offensively at the NBA level, averaging 8.2 PPG and 4.1 APG in 231 career games (24.1 MPG), with a shooting line of .420/.305/.727. His strong defense earned him a two-year contract with the Hawks last offseason, but an ankle injury limited him to just four games. He was traded to Boston and then flipped to Memphis after he exercised his player option for 2021/22.

The Grizzlies acquired Dunn and Carsen Edwards in that trade with Boston last month, but have since waived both players, signaling that the 2026 second-round pick swap included in the deal was the main reason Memphis pulled the trigger.

Dunn will clear waivers on Monday and could draw interest from teams in need of a defensive specialist in the backcourt.

Grizzlies Sign Stockton, Waive Caver

The Grizzlies announced in a press release that they have signed guard David Stockton and waived guard Ahmad Caver.

The terms of Stockton’s contract weren’t disclosed, but it’s almost certainly an Exhibit 10 contract. As with Caver, he will likely be waived before the season starts. The move is procedural in nature, as it will allow the Grizzlies to give Stockton a bonus of up to $50K if he sticks with their G League squad, the Memphis Hustle, for at least 60 days.

Stockton is a six-year veteran of the G League and has seen action in six total NBA games since going undrafted in 2014. He has also played for several overseas teams during the course of his career. In 184 G League contests, he holds career averages of 17.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and 6.9 APG in 29.9 MPG, with a shooting line of .450/.369/.820. He suited up for the Hustle last season in the G League bubble in Orlando.

Caver spent the past two seasons with the Hustle after going undrafted out of Old Dominion in 2019. He had a productive run for the team last season, putting up 16.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 3.9 APG in 29.4 MPG off the bench.

The move leaves the team with the preseason maximum of 20 players under contract: 15 with guaranteed deals, Sam Merrill with a partial guarantee of $500K, and both two-way slots filled.

David Stockton To Play In Puerto Rico

Veteran free agent guard David Stockton, the son of Hall-of-Famer John Stockton, has agreed to join Mets de Guaynabo in Puerto Rico, reports Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.

Stockton, 29, went undrafted out of Gonzaga in 2014 and has spent most of his professional career since then in the NBA’s G League. In five total seasons with the Reno Bighorns and South Bay Lakers, he has averaged 17.5 PPG, 7.1 APG, and 3.5 RPG on .450/.372/.823 shooting in 169 games (30.0 MPG).

Stockton has also appeared in six total NBA games for the Kings and Jazz, and has some international experience, having played in Croatia in 2016, New Zealand in 2016/17, and Germany in 2018/19.

The timing of Stockton’s move to Puerto Rico is interesting, since a recent report said he has been named vice president of the new G League players’ union (the Basketball Players Union). That report indicated that Stockton was part of the BPU’s “interim” executive committee, so perhaps he’ll be replaced now that he’s apparently headed to Puerto Rico.

Stockton is the second former NBA player to reach an agreement with Mets de Guaynabo this month. Terrence Jones reportedly struck a deal with the Puerto Rican club last week.

Andre Ingram Becomes President Of NBAGL Players’ Union

NBA G League veteran Andre Ingram has been named the president of the Basketball Players Union, the newly-formed union for NBAGL players, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

According to Charania, guard David Stockton has been named the vice president of the union, while top prospect Isaiah Todd will be the secretary-treasurer. Charania classifies the group as an “interim” executive committee — it’s not clear whether that means those players could be replaced in the near future or whether more positions will be added.

As we detailed in July, the Basketball Players Union (BPU) will represent players on all NBA G League teams, including the Select Team that will be launched in 2020/21. Players on two-way contracts or on NBAGL assignments from NBA rosters will continue to be repped by the National Basketball Players Association.

The BPU will have its work cut out for it in its first year, given the uncertain outlook for the G League’s 2020/21 season amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Ingram’s G League résumé makes him an ideal fit as the BPU’s first president. The 34-year-old shooting guard is the all-time leader in NBAGL games played (449), having been part of the league since the 2007/08 season. Ingram has played in just six NBA games during that time, racking up 19 points during a memorable debut for the Lakers in April 2018.

Stockton, the son of Hall-of-Famer John Stockton, is also a G League veteran, having appeared in 169 games for the Reno Bighorns and South Bay Lakers since 2014. Todd, meanwhile, is an NBAGL rookie — the five-star recruit will be part of the new Select Team, the G League Ignite, next season.

Lakers Sign Reggie Hearn, Cut David Stockton

The Lakers have made a minor change to their roster, announcing in a press release that they’ve signed guard Reggie Hearn and waived guard David Stockton.

Hearn, who appeared in three games for Detroit during the 2017/18 season, has spent much of his professional career in the G League, appearing in 227 total regular season games at that level. Last season, the 28-year-old played 40 games (29 starts) for the Stockton Kings, averaging 11.4 PPG and 4.5 RPG with a .429/.408/.873 shooting line.

The South Bay Lakers, L.A.’s G League affiliate, acquired the NBAGL returning rights to both Hearn and Stockton in a trade with the Kings’ G League affiliate last month, so it’s a safe bet that both players will suit up for South Bay this season.

Assuming Hearn and Stockton remain with the Lakers’ G League team for at least 60 days, they’ll be in line for Exhibit 10 bonuses worth up to $50K.

Lakers Sign David Stockton, Cut Jordan Caroline

The Lakers have made a change to their 20-man preseason roster, announcing today in a press release that they’ve signed guard David Stockton, waiving forward Jordan Caroline in a corresponding move.

Stockton, the son of Hall-of-Famer John Stockton, appeared in three games with the Kings during the 2014/15 season and three more with the Jazz in 2017/18. However, most of his professional career has been spent in the G League or in international leagues.

The South Bay Lakers – L.A.’s G League affiliate – acquired the 28-year-old’s NBAGL returning rights last month, so it looks like he’ll end up playing for South Bay this season. Assuming his new deal with the Lakers contains an Exhibit 10 clause, Stockton will be in line for a bonus worth up to $50K if he spends at least two months with the G League club.

Caroline is also a strong candidate to head to South Bay. The Lakers will have the ability to make the undrafted Nevada wing an affiliate player for their G League squad, assuming he doesn’t sign with another NBA team before the season begins.

Jazz Waive Guard David Stockton

The Jazz have waived guard David Stockton, the son of their Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports tweets.

This comes as no surprise since the younger Stockton had already signed to play in Germany with Medi Bayreuth. Stockton had a non-guaranteed contract with the Jazz for the upcoming season.

Stockton joined Utah on a pair of 10-day contracts, then signed for the rest of the season in early April. He appeared in three games and played nine total minutes. He also made a couple of playoff cameos.

With Stockton off the books, the Jazz now have a roster total of 18, with 14 guaranteed contracts, two non-guaranteed contracts and a pair of two-way deals. Stockton had no path to playing time on the Jazz with Ricky Rubio, Dante Exum and Raul Neto ahead of him on the point guard depth chart.

Stockton has previous overseas experience in Croatia and New Zealand. He also played three games for the Kings in 2015.

David Stockton Will Play In Germany

David Stockton, who finished last season with the Jazz, has signed with Medi Bayreuth in Germany, tweets Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.

Stockton inked a pair of 10-day contracts with Utah in March, then signed for the rest of the season in early April. He appeared in three games and played nine total minutes, then saw brief action in two playoff contests.

Stockton, the son of Hall-of-Famer John Stockton, has previous overseas experience in Croatia and New Zealand. He also played three games for the Kings in 2015.

Oddly, despite the fact that Medi Bayreuth has already put out an announcement confirming its deal with Stockton, the veteran guard remains under contract with the Jazz, since his rest-of-season contract last year included a non-guaranteed salary for 2018/19. Presumably, Utah will soon waive Stockton, freeing him up to officially join his new German club.

And-Ones: Brown, Motiejunas, Broekhoff, USA Basketball

Longtime NBA coach Larry Brown will sign his contract to become the head coach of the Euroleague’s Fiat Torino on Sunday, according to a Sportando report. Brown’s agent, Massimo Rizzo, said his client has already signed a letter of intent to coach the club but won’t ink the official contract until his press conference this weekend, the report adds. The 77-year-old will be taking his first head coaching position since resigning from Southern Methodist two years ago.

Forward Donatas Motiejunas will remain in China next season, Sportando relays. He re-signed with Shandong for approximately $3MM, the report adds. Motiejunas played 34 games with the Pelicans in 2016/17 after beginning his career with the Rockets, but long-terms concerns over the soundness of his back sidetracked his NBA career.
Australian swingman Ryan Broekhoff has visited several teams this week hoping to land an NBA contract, HoopsHype tweets. Broekhoff, who went undrafted out of Valparaiso in 2013, was scheduled to visit and work out for the Wizards, Timberwolves, Bucks and Nets, HoopsHype adds.
Reggie Hearn, Jonathan Holmes, Amile Jefferson, David Stockton and Xavier Munford are among the 14 players who will be on the training camp roster for the USA World Cup Qualifying Team, according a USA Basketball press release. Training camp begins on Wednesday and the final roster will be pared to 12 players. In the FIBA World Cup Qualifying games, the U.S. will face Mexico on June 28th in Mexico City and Cuba on July 1st in Havana.
The Hornets and Raptors are interested in adding Sergio Scariolo, who is currently the head coach of the Spanish national team, to their staffs, according to another Sportando post.

Jazz Sign David Stockton For Rest Of Season

3:51pm: The Jazz have officially signed Stockton, per the NBA’s transactions log.

8:09am: David Stockton‘s second 10-day contract with the Jazz expired overnight, but he won’t be going anywhere, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). League sources tell Charania that Utah intends to sign Stockton to a new contract that covers the rest of the season.

Stockton, the son of former Jazz star John Stockton, has played sparingly for his father’s old team during his 20 days in Utah, averaging 3.3 PPG in 3.0 MPG over the course of three games.

The Jazz are currently looking to secure a top-four seed in the West and then will head into the playoffs next week, so Stockton is unlikely to see his minutes increase in the near future. However, the 26-year-old point guard will be postseason-eligible on his new deal and will serve as an insurance policy in Utah’s backcourt.

Once Stockton officially inks his new deal with the Jazz, the team will have a full NBA roster, with 15 guaranteed contracts.
