Derrick Jones’ 2019/20 Salary Becomes Guaranteed

Derrick Jones‘ $1,645,357 salary for the 2019/20 season has become fully guaranteed as a result of the Heat standing pat today. The small forward had an August 1 guarantee deadline on his deal, which meant that if he remained under contract through today’s waiver deadline (5:00pm ET) and didn’t agree to push that date back, he’d be assured of receiving his full salary for the coming season.

Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel wrote earlier today that a source close to the situation stressed there were “no plans” to make any roster moves that would allow the Heat to avoid Jones’ guarantee.

Jones had a promising season for the Heat in 2018/19, averaging 7.0 PPG and 4.0 RPG in 60 games (19.2 MPG). On the opening night of free agency a month ago, it appeared that the 22-year-old might be Dallas-bound as part of the multi-team trade that would ultimately land Jimmy Butler in Miami. However, that deal fell through, with reports indicating that the Heat didn’t want to part with Jones. Now, it looks like a near-lock that he’ll be part of the team’s regular season roster in 2019/20.

August 1 also represented a guarantee deadline for a handful of other players around the NBA. It’s possible that one or more of these players agreed to push his deadline back at the request of his team, but nothing along those lines has been reported.

Unless we hear otherwise, we’re assuming the following players received full or partial guarantees by remaining under contract through today’s waiver deadline:

Dwayne Bacon (Hornets): $1,618,520 salary becomes fully guaranteed (Twitter link via ESPN’s Bobby Marks).
Deonte Burton (Thunder): $1,416,852 salary becomes fully guaranteed (Twitter link via Marks)
Kendrick Nunn (Heat): $50,000 partial guarantee increases to $150,000 (link via Winderman). Nunn is no longer eligible to sign a two-way contract with Miami. His full salary is $1,416,852.

Thunder Sign Deonte Burton To Multiyear Deal

3:27pm: Oklahoma City has officially signed Burton to a full NBA contract, announcing the news in a press release.

2:42pm: The Thunder have agreed to a new multi-year deal with guard Deonte Burton, converting him from a two-way contract to a standard NBA contract, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports (via Twitter).

Burton, 25, originally signed a two-way deal with the team last July. He went undrafted in 2017 after spending seasons at Marquette and Iowa State, later attending training camp with the Timberwolves before heading overseas to play in South Korea.

Burton has appeared in 23 games with the Thunder this season, averaging 3.1 points, one rebound and 8.7 minutes per contest off the bench. He’s holding shooting averages of 44 percent from the floor and 33 percent from deep.

The Thunder had been carrying 13 players on standard contracts, so promoting Burton to the 15-man roster helps the team get back to the NBA-mandated 14-player minimum.

Thunder Sign Deonte Burton To Two-Way Contract

The Thunder have signed former Iowa State guard/forward Deonte Burton to a two-way contract, tweets Keith Smith of RealGM. The Thunder also officially announced the signing.

Burton, 24, went undrafted in 2017 before signing with Wonju DB Promy of South Korea’s KBL, where he started 63 games and averaged 23.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game last season.

He is currently playing for the Thunder in the Las Vegas Summer League, who are coached by Mark Daigneault. Daigneault also coaches the Thunder’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, where Burton is likely to spend most of his time next season.

Mavs Notes: Nowitzki, Draft, Liggins, Powell

Last summer, Dirk Nowitzki signed a two-year deal with the Mavericks that included a team option for 2017/18. The Mavs are due to make a decision on that option before the end of June, but Nowitzki told local reporters today, including Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com (Twitter video link), that he doesn’t know yet what the club plans to do.

According to Nowitzki, team owner Mark Cuban is on vacation, and the two sides will likely sit down and discuss the big man’s contract situation when Cuban returns. While Dallas will certainly keep Nowitzki on the roster, his option is worth $25MM, so the team may be interested in lowering that number.

Nowitzki was also asked today about the Mavericks’ draft plans, and acknowledged that it’s “not a secret” the club would “love” to add a point guard (Twitter link via Sneed).
After claiming DeAndre Liggins off waivers late in the 2016/17 season, the Mavericks intend to use the summer to get more familiar with the former Cavalier and to evaluate whether he has a spot on the roster going forward. Given Dwight Powell‘s contract situation, he’s unlikely to draw a whole lot of trade interest anytime soon, which means it makes sense for Dallas to be patient and eventually hope for a payoff on the team’s four-year contract investment, says Eddie Sefko of The Dallas Morning News.

Atlantic Notes: Knicks, D. Smith, Sixers, Celtics

While top point guard prospects like Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, and De’Aaron Fox may be off the board by the time the Knicks pick at No. 8 in the draft, North Carolina State’s Dennis Smith Jr. has “landed squarely in their crosshairs,” according to Marc Berman of The New York Post. Berman takes a closer look at Smith, and speaks to his college coach Mark Gottfried, who is skeptical that the young point guard will still be available at No. 8.

And-Ones: Bargnani, Jersey Ads, Burton

Former Nets power forward Andrea Bargnani, who was waived in February as part of a buyout arrangement, took to his personal Facebook page to explain the reason he wanted out of Brooklyn (translation via Orazio Cauchi of Sportando). The veteran claims he was promised more minutes than he was seeing by the team prior to inking his deal, and since he wasn’t receiving the playing time he was promised, it made more sense to part ways with the club than remain unhappy. Bargnani also added that he wanted to sign with a Euroleague club after securing his release from the Nets, but there wasn’t enough time to get a deal done. The 30-year-old former No. 1 overall pick made 46 appearances for Brooklyn this season, notching averages of 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per outing.
