Dewayne Dedmon

Sixers Sign Dewayne Dedmon

TUESDAY, 9:56am: The Sixers have officially announced the signing.

MONDAY, 7:54pm: The Sixers are set to sign Dewayne Dedmon to a ten-day deal, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com (via Twitter).  Philadelphia auditioned big men today, including Dedmon and former Heat and Celtics forward Jarvis Varnado.

Dedmon, 24, was with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the D-League after a short stint with the Warriors’ varsity squad.  In 15 D-League games this season, the USC product put up 15.2 PPG and 13.5 RPG.

In addition to Varnado, Dedmon also beat out Kyrylo Fesenko and  Rutgers product Hamady N’Diaye for the vacant spot.  The Sixers had a need for frontcourt depth after waiving Daniel Orton prior to the contract guarantee deadline.

Sixers Auditioning Four Big Men

MONDAY, 1:59pm: Spears adds Kyrylo Fesenko and Hamady N’Diaye to the list of players working out for Philadelphia today (Twitter link).

SUNDAY, 5:11pm: The Sixers are working out free agent big men Monday, including the D-League’s Dewayne Dedmon and Jarvis Varnado, sources tell Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter).   Philadelphia lost some frontcourt depth last week when they waived center Daniel Orton.

Dedmon is currently with the Santa Cruz Warriors after a short stint with the Warriors’ varsity squad earlier this season.  The 7’0” center appeared in four games with Golden State, logging a whopping six minutes.  The Warriors flirted with bringing him back at different points since cutting him loose and as recently as last week they were mulling it over.

Varnado, a shot-blocking forward who spent time with the Celtics and Heat last season, is with the Iowa Energy this year.  The 25-year-old has averaged 14.5 PPG and 9.9 RPG in 23 D-League games this season.

Western Notes: Pelicans, Harris, Franklin

Ryan Anderson will be out indefinitely with a herniated disk, the Pelicans announced today (link via Jim Eichenhofer of Pelicans.com). Anderson has been mentioned in a few trade rumors, but didn’t seem likely to be moved this season. Still, if he’s expected to miss a significant amount of time, it could have an impact on New Orleans’ roster decisions before the trade deadline. The team is currently carrying 14 players, leaving one opening available.

Here’s more from the NBA’s better half:

  • After indicating last night that the Thunder were researching D-League standout Manny Harris, Sam Amick of USA Today follows up by tweeting that Harris had an interview with members of OKC’s front office this week, as the team does its due diligence.
  • The Grizzlies have recalled Jamaal Franklin from the D-League, the team announced today in a press release. Franklin was assigned to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Sunday, and played with the team yesterday in Reno as part of the 2014 D-League Showcase.
  • Dewayne Dedmon was released by the Warriors earlier this season, but Golden State still has interest in bringing him back, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, adding that Dedmon is meeting with three NBA clubs in Reno today.

Warriors Notes: O’Neal, Armstrong, Douglas

Wednesday’s come-from-behind win against the Mavericks was a boost for the Warriors, who would have fallen to within a game of .500 had they lost. Golden State instead entered tonight at 13-10 and tied with Dallas for eighth place in the Western Conference, but the Warriors didn’t envision merely scrapping for a playoff spot this season. Injuries have played a role in the slow start, but it looks like the team has at least considered shaking up the roster with a trade, as witnessed by the team’s rumored interest in Kyle Lowry. It sounds like Lowry won’t wind up in a Warriors uniform, but Golden State will nonetheless be a team to watch if its struggles continue. Here’s more on the W’s:

  • Jermaine O’Neal had surgery today on a torn ligament in his right wrist, but he took to Twitter to insist that he will return at some point this season (hat tip to The Associated Press). GM Bob Myers says O’Neal will probably miss about two months, according to 95.7 The Game (Twitter link). A report yesterday indicated it was likely that O’Neal was done for the year.
  • Coach Mark Jackson explained to reporters, including Tim Kawakami of the Bay Area News Group, why the team chose to sign Hilton Armstrong this week rather than bring back Dewayne Dedmon to fill its need for a backup center. “Just overall we thought we needed a guy that was more game ready today, not to say that Dewayne isn’t, but this is no time for us to experiment. We needed a proven guy off the bench,” Jackson said.
  • Amid the rumors linking Golden State to Lowry, Jackson also said the team still believes in backup point guard Toney Douglas, as Kawakami also notes in his piece.
  • The best outcome for David Lee and the Warriors isn’t a trade that would ship him out of town, but a return to the All-Star form the power forward exhibited last season, opines fellow Bay Area News Group scribe Marcus Thompson.

Warriors Waive Dewayne Dedmon

The Warriors announced that they have waived center Dewayne Dedmon.  The 24-year-old was originally signed as a D-League callup on November 18th.

The 7’0” center appeared in four games with Golden State, logging a grand total of six minutes.  During his time with the Warriors, Dedmon also appeared in one game with Santa Cruz while on assignment to the D-League club, registering 23 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in a 117-103 victory over the Austin Toros on November 24th.

The Warriors inked Dedmon at a time when they were desperate for frontcourt help in the wake of Jermaine O’Neal‘s injury.  The club even considered asking assistant coach Brian Scalabrine if he would come out of retirement to give the club an extra big.

D-League Notes: Lakers, Warriors, Curry

Let’s round up today’s D-League updates, including a pair of assignments and a pair of recalls out of the Pacific….

  • Ryan Kelly and Elias Harris have been re-assigned to the D-League by the Lakers, according to the Los Angeles D-Fenders (Twitter link). It’s already the third assignment of the season for both players, so it looks like they’ll be shuttled back and forth throughout the year.
  • The Warriors have recalled Dewayne Dedmon and Nemanja Nedovic from the D-League, the team announced today in a press release. The duo helped lead the Santa Cruz Warriors to a victory last night, combining for 54 points.
  • Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group checks in on Seth Curry‘s development with the Warriors‘ D-League affiliate in Santa Cruz.

Odds & Ends: Price, Bennett, Warriors

The Knicks and Celtics were among the losing teams on a five-game Tuesday in the NBA, and while those clubs fall farther beneath .500, it sounds like they’re thinking about helping each other out via trade, as Bleacher Report’s Jared Zwerling detailed tonight. Zwerling has a ton of news from New York and Boston, as well as a couple other NBA teams, in the piece we linked to earlier tonight, and there are still more noteworthy items as a busier-than-usual November continues:

Warriors Sign Dewayne Dedmon

Dewayne Dedmon is suited up for the Warriors’ game tonight against the Jazz, signaling that he has officially signed with the team, tweets Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle.  There was no press release, but the center is warming up with Golden State hours before tipoff.

The 7’0″ center went undrafted in June and joined the Warriors as a camp invitee, averaging 3.4 PPG and 4.0 RPG in five preseason games and was said to impress the club in practice.  While he didn’t make the NBA roster, the 24-year-old’s D-League rights had been retained by the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported earlier today that the Warriors were planning to sign Dedmon.  Simmons also noted earlier today that the team even briefly considered asking assistant coach Brian Scalabrine if he’d come out of retirement to replace the injured Jermaine O’Neal.  Dedmon, along with Marreese Speights, and Ognjen Kuzmic, are expected to help support Andrew Bogut at center.

Warriors Plan To Sign Dewayne Dedmon

After seeing Jermaine O’Neal suffer a strained knee and groin during Saturday’s game against the Jazz, the Warriors will turn to free agency for a replacement, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Wojnarowski reports (via Twitter) that Golden State intends to sign Dewayne Dedmon, who was with the team in training camp.

Dedmon, a 7’0″ center, declared his intent for the draft this past spring, but wasn’t one of the 60 players selected in June. He joined Golden State as a camp invitee, averaging 3.4 PPG and 4.0 RPG in five preseason games, and was believed to be in good position to earn a regular season roster spot. The Warriors ultimately cut the 24-year-old, but could re-sign him without a corresponding roster move, since the club has an open roster spot. Dedmon’s D-League rights had been retained by the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote earlier today that Dedmon would be a candidate to join the Warriors, and noted that the team even briefly considered asking assistant coach Brian Scalabrine if he’d come out of retirement to replace O’Neal. It’s not clear when Dedmon’s signing will become official, or how many minutes he’ll play after he does sign. In O’Neal’s absence, some combination of Marreese Speights, Ognjen Kuzmic, and Dedmon could back up Andrew Bogut at center.

Pacific Notes: Jimmer, Bledsoe, Warriors, Kings

After reporting yesterday that about six clubs had shown some level of interest in trade candidate Jimmer Fredette, Sam Amick of USA Today tweets that the number of teams with substantive interest is “closer to two.” The Kings elected to turn down their option on Jimmer for 2014/15, meaning he’s on an expiring contract now, which will make him more movable, according to Amick.

As the Kings mull what to do with their 2011 lottery pick, let’s check in on a few more items from around the Pacific Division….

  • Eric Bledsoe will head to restricted free agency in 2014 after not reaching an extension agreement with the Suns prior to October 31st. One league source tells Sean Deveney of the Sporting News that Phoenix probably won’t get a discount next summer: “He is probably going to want a max deal. If he plays the way he thinks he is going to, he will get it, too.”
  • Warriors camp invitees Seth Curry, Dewayne Dedmon, and Joe Alexander have joined Golden State’s D-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. The three players, whose D-League rights were retained by Golden State, were considered likely to head to Santa Cruz when they were cut by the NBA’s Warriors.
  • The Kings‘ new management group didn’t just take over a mess when it came to business and fan relations, writes Tom Ziller of SBNation.com. In Ziller’s view, former GM Geoff Petrie‘s rebuild of Sacramento’s roster may require a rebuild itself.
