Dwight Howard

Odds & Ends: Howard, Knicks, Kaman, Przybilla

In an action-packed Wednesday night of basketball, the Thunder and Knicks have stolen the show so far with impressive victories over quality opponents. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook led the Thunder to 72 points in the first half as the squad held on to beat the Celtics 119-104 in a box score seemingly from a different era. Let's take a look around the league to see what else happened on a night where Kevin Love and the Timberwolves climbed to .500 on the season:

  • In what was potentially a preview of things to come, Magic center Dwight Howard did not disappoint the Nets faithful with his 20-point and 17-rebound performance Wednesday night in Newark. Jake Appleman of The New York Times says the Nets organization gave Howard a special welcome by displaying new signage promoting their Brooklyn arena and shooting off fireworks prior to the start of the game. When asked about playing for the Nets, Howard said he was humbled by the way the crowd of over 15,000 received him, reports Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News (via Twitter).
  • The Knicks are a team bound to benefit from the All-Star break, writes Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday. Having only played two games together as a team with the current roster, the Knicks will utilize their time to schedule five practices with hopes of better acclimating players like J.R. Smith to the offensive scheme.
  • Hornets center Chris Kaman continues to add to his trade value as he scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Wednesday's 89-84 victory over the Cavaliers.  Over the last five games, Kaman is averaging 16.0 PPG and 8.2 RPG and has notched two double-doubles. Thanks to Kaman's strong play, the Hornets have won four of their last six games after starting the season 4-23.
  • Jason Quick of The Oregonian tweets free-agent center Joel Przybilla said he was thinking with his heart when he decided to sign with Trail Blazers instead of the Heat.

Dwight Howard Rumors: Wednesday

The Magic will only play once in New Jersey this season, but can the same be said about Dwight Howard? Howard and the Magic arrive at Prudential Center tonight amidst speculation that Howard would like to be a Net, if not by March 15th, then perhaps by the start of next season. With New Jersey scuffling along at 10-24, the rumors surrounding Howard and Nets point guard Deron Williams figure to get more attention today than the game itself, so let's keep tabs on today's Howard updates here. As usual, the latest items will be added up top throughout the day….

  • The Nets have promoted Howard's appearance in Jersey heavily, hoping to "provide an atmosphere to impress," says Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.
  • Assuming he's not traded, Howard would give up an extra year and around $30MM in guaranteed money if he signed with the Nets this summer rather than re-signing with the Magic. However, Bondy hears from a source familiar with Howard's thinking that the lost year doesn't bother D12 much, as endorsement deals in the right market could help make up the difference.
  • A source tells Bondy it's not a sure thing that Williams would leave the Nets if the team can't obtain Howard.

Odds & Ends: Howard, Iverson, Beaubois, Williams

With this weekend's All-Star game serving as a major benchmark in the Dwight Howard saga, Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel breaks down what could happen, and when, once the mid-season festivities are over with. One interesting thing to note: The Magic's first game after the trade deadline is againt the Nets. If Howard is dealt there, things would get interesting in a hurry.

Here are a few other notes from around the league:

  • In a tweet, Sportando reporter Emiliano Carchia is reporting that a professional team in Puerto Rico has pulled its offer for Allen Iverson off the table.
  • Last night, ESPN's Chris Broussard wrote that Dallas was ready to move on from French point guard prospect Rodrigue Beaubois. Alex Raskin of Hoopsworld disputes the report by saying Beaubois still has the support of several high-ranking executives in Dallas' personnel department. Raskin cites the team's possible need to replace Jason Terry next season as a prime reason as to why the Mavericks will likely keep him.
  • Nets forward Shawne Williams will undergo surgery to remove a bone fragment in his left foot on Wednesday, according to the team. In his first season in New Jersey Williams has been a major disappointment, averaging just 4.5 PPG on 28.6% shooting from the three-point line after breaking out last year with the Knicks.

Gilbert Arenas Talks Lakers, Health, Howard

Free agent Gilbert Arenas worked out for the Lakers recently, but there are no indications he's close to a deal with Los Angeles. Arenas sat down for a lengthy interview with SI.com's Sam Amick, in which he discussed a handful of topics, including the Lakers workout, his health, his former teams, and much more. Here are a few highlights from the informative two-part piece:

  • Because he's still rehabbing and working his way toward full health, Arenas says he doesn't expect to sign anywhere until at least the All-Star break.
  • Arenas spoke to Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak at his L.A. workout, but wouldn't comment on what the two discussed.
  • The platelet-rich therapy Arenas underwent last month has improved his health immensely: "I'm jumping and moving like before I got injured, like it's basically '06 again. My explosiveness, my jumping ability, my quickness — it feels like I never got injured."
  • Arenas talks to Dwight Howard every day, but says he doesn't know where Howard will end up next season and beyond: "I have no idea [if Dwight will stay], because like any big decision you're going to go back and forth every day."
  • Howard and Arenas have talked about playing together again, which could still technically happen in Orlando next year if the former Wizard sits out this whole season, according to Arenas. I believe CBA rules prohibit an amnestied player from rejoining his old team for the duration of his contract, but presumably Arenas has been advised on this loophole. Regardless, I expect the odds of Howard and Arenas both wearing Magic uniforms next season are close to zero.

Dwight Howard Rumors: Monday

Over the weekend, we heard that the Warriors were still considering making a play for Dwight Howard, while Stephen Jackson was unconvinced that his friend would be leaving Orlando. With the All-Star Game in Orlando just six days away now, the Howard rumors could start to really heat up in a week or so. For now, here's the latest on the Magic star….

  • Citing team sources, Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld says the Magic will "actively explore the trade landscape" again starting on March 1st.
  • The Rockets and Warriors are viewed as two teams who could try to acquire Howard, despite not being on his list of preferred destinations. Kyler says both teams feel like they'd have a chance at convincing Howard to stay if they could land him using non-core assets.
  • Regardless of whether or not Howard is traded by March 15th, he intends to explore his options in free agency this summer, with both the Nets and Mavs having been promised a chance to make a sales pitch in July.

Stephen Jackson Talks Potential Destinations

It's no secret that Stephen Jackson is a trade candidate, and that the Bucks wouldn't hesitate to move him if they got an offer they liked. But just in case there was any confusion, Jackson expressed his opinion to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

"No disrespect to the guys (on the Bucks)," said Jackson. "But I’m at the stage of my career where I want to be in a different situation."

Reports have suggested that Dwight Howard and Jackson would like to play together, perhaps for the Magic or Nets. While the possibility of the pair teaming up in Orlando is likely a long shot, Jackson seemed enthusiastic about the chance to play in Brooklyn next season with Howard and Deron Williams. Williams had positive things to say about Jackson as well, telling Bondy he tried to recruit the 6'8" forward when he played for the Jazz.

"I like his game," said Williams. "I know a lot of people that knows him. I’m good friends with Baron Davis, who says (Jackson) was a great teammate. So he was just one of the guys I always wanted to play with."

Jackson says he has no desire to play for the Mavericks, another potential offseason landing spot for Williams and Howard. However, as Bondy points out in a pair of tweets, neither the Nets or the Mavs would be able to take on Jackson's $10MM+ 2012/13 salary if they signed Williams and Howard to max or near-max deals. To have a chance to team up with both players, Jackson would probably need to be amnestied by the Bucks.

Kupchak, Lakers Not Expecting Any Moves

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped a game to the Phoenix Suns tonight and appear to be falling further away from their status as overwhelming Western Conference favorites from just a season ago.

After a failed attempt at a blockbuster trade for Chris Paul before the season, and a flurry of trade rumors involving Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak told SI.com's Sam Amick he does not expect any big moves this season.

Despite popular opinion, a trade for Dwight Howard is hardly a cure-all for this Lakers' season. Howard's biggest strength is his ability to anchor a defense, and the Lakers are already quite formidable on that end, at fourth in the NBA at points per game allowed.

Their frontline of Bynum and Gasol is still perhaps the best frontline in the league and quite capable of generating high efficiency looks from the post and drawing double teams–and in Gasol's case, passing better out of those double teams. Howard might augment some of that, but his presence still leaves the Lakers woefully lacking.

Bryant already largely underutilizes Gasol and Bynum in the post, and according to previous reports, would look to do the same with Howard. The Lakers troubles remain on the offensive end.

The Lakers need to make some moves on the fringes of their roster. Replacing underproducing veterans like Fisher or World Peace with merely replacement level players would do wonders for the Lakers offense. Guys like Ramon Sessions or Aaron Brooks would provide significant upgrades.

Unfortunately, it appears the Lakers seem intent on standing pat.

Assessing Stocks: Golden State Warriors

Portfolio Review: The ownership and coaching staff has changed, but so much has remained the same for the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors are in the basketball equivalent of hell, which is ninth seed purgatory. They are not quite good enough to be in the playoffs, and not bad enough to get top level talent through the draft.

The backcourt is the team's strength between Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson, but they also represent the best trade assets the team has going forward. Word is the Warriors are interested in Dwight Howard still. While it's doubtful they land him, it shows they are willing to blow things up for the right price. They need to. Even if it means taking a step or two back to start pushing forward again.

Prime Assets: The easy answer is Ellis, though the answer is not as easy as it was at the beginning of the season. Curry's ankle woes are a little concerning, and help obscure the Ellis vs. Curry debate a little.

Ellis is the Warriors' best player. Still, there are legitimate questions to how far a team can go with an undersized, high usage shooting guard not named Allen Iverson. If Ellis is your team's best player, what is the ceiling for your team? Ellis for draft picks or a frontcourt piece could work (the Utah Jazz, for example, have a plethora of big men and lack a dynamic perimeter threat). If the trade picks up an asset and drops the Warriors out of the middle of the first round and into a top ten pick over the next couple of years, it might even prove to benefit the team.

Worthless Stock: Andris Biedrins. Big, mobile big men are always going to have some value. But one on a big contract whose career is currently stalled by a phobia of free throw attempts?

The Rest: Curry should only be available for a near elite talent or top ten pick in this draft. For the former, given that Curry is on his rookie contract, he would probably have to be packaged with David Lee. Thompson could be a solid third guard on a good team eventually and merits holding onto. Dorell Wright might fetch a good first round pick for a potential playoff team, but is young, cheap, and understands his role well enough to be part of the answer going forward.

Dwight Howard Rumors: Saturday

The Dwight Howard rumor mill has quieted down lately with many pundits believing that the Magic will keep the center right up until the trade deadline.  This morning, however, we learned that there could be another serious suitor in the Howard sweepstakes.  Here's the latest, with the most recent updates up top.

  • Stephen Jackson's indication to HoopsWorld last night that he would love to play for the Magic gives Orlando fans a glimmer of hope that their team can convince Howard to stay, writes Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel. Robbins suspects the Magic's failure to acquire Jackson around draft time last year, when the Bucks picked him up, may have led to Howard's questioning of GM Otis Smith. Still, Robbins believes Jackson, and his $10.5MM payday next season, may not be a worthwhile risk.
  • The Warriors are convinced that they're still players in a potential deal for Dwight Howard, writes Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle.  Warriors sources believe the Magic could part with Howard without receiving a draft pick in return, if there are enough players involved.  Golden State has a 14-man roster to work with and could put together a deal like David Lee, Monta Ellis and either Ekpe Udoh or Klay Thompson for Howard and Glen Davis.

Dwight Howard Rumors: Wednesday

We're exactly a month away from this season's trade deadline, and it's looking more and more like there won't be any major developments on the Dwight Howard front until after the All-Star Game in Orlando. That doesn't mean the rumors don't continue to swirl though. We'll keep tabs on today's Howard updates right here….

  • ESPN.com's Chris Broussard (Insider link) disregards Howard's list of preferred destinations and explains why hypothetical trades to the Heat, Knicks, Hawks, Lakers, and Bulls could make sense.
  • The Magic appear content to play out the month and reassess the situation on March 1st, says Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel. The team believes there's no rush to make a decision and that Howard will still be in high demand at the deadline.
  • A pair of TNT personalities, Shaquille O'Neal and Steve Kerr, weighed in on Howard yesterday, according to the Associated Press (ESPN.com link). Kerr said he'd play out the season and try to keep the star center if he were running the Magic, while Shaq said it would be a "travesty" if D12 leaves Orlando, pointing out differences between his situation in 1996 and Howard's this season.
