Unlike McGee, whose deal with the Warriors is fully non-guaranteed, Williams, Pressey, and Jones all had partial guarantees on their contracts. Pressey’s $35K guarantee and Jones’ $50K guarantee were modest, and suggest they could end up landing with the Santa Cruz Warriors in the D-League. However, Williams, a veteran guard, got $250K guaranteed and was no lock to be cut.

With 14 players on guaranteed salaries, the Warriors have a little flexibility with that 15th roster spot. McGee’s salary for the season won’t become fully guaranteed until January 10, so the club could cut him before then and only be on the hook for a prorated portion of his contract. For now though, it seems the Dubs will hang onto the eight-year veteran and give him a chance to compete for minutes.

• As expected, the one-year deal signed by Elliot Williams with the Warriors earlier this month is a minimum-salary pact. The contract was initially reported as having a “strong” partial guarantee — the amount of that guarantee is $250K, per Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders (via Twitter). If Williams earns a spot on Golden State’s opening-night roster, his full salary will become guaranteed.
• Draft-and-stash signee Semaj Christon got a three-year, minimum-salary deal from the Thunder, according to Pincus (via Twitter). Christon’s 2016/17 salary is guaranteed for $200K, so he’s no lock to make the roster, particularly since Oklahoma City already has 15 players on fully guaranteed contracts.
• D.J. Kennedy‘s three-year contract with the Nuggets is a minimum-salary pact that features a modest $50K guarantee in year one, tweets Pincus.
• The Celtics‘ deal with Marcus Georges-Hunt is a one-year, minimum-salary contract that includes a $25K guarantee, says Pincus (via Twitter). Despite the guarantee, Georges-Hunt is a long shot to make Boston’s regular-season roster.
• By re-signing with the Grizzlies, Tony Wroten received a $25K guarantee and a second non-guaranteed year, tweets Pincus. Wroten’s previous contract included several guarantee dates, but those have been removed — the point guard will get his full 2016/17 salary if he remains under contract through January 10.
• According to Bobby Marks of The Vertical, Marcus Paige‘s new deal with the Jazz is a two-year, minimum-salary pact with $125K guaranteed in year one.

Williams appeared in five games with the Grizzlies last season, averaging 1.6 points in 9.0 minutes. In 2014/15, he played a combined 13 games with the Pelicans and Jazz.

The 6’5” Williams made his league debut with the Trail Blazers in 2011/12, appearing in 24 games. His career was sidetracked by an Achilles injury, forcing him to miss the following season.

His most extensive playing time came with the Sixers in 2013/14, when he saw action in 67 games, including the only two starts of his career. He averaged 6.0 points in 17.3 minutes that season.

The Warriors are quite familiar with Williams, as he played for their D-League team in Santa Cruz last season. Williams averaged 28.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists in 21 games.

Williams has a shot to earn rotation minutes behind Stephen Curry, Shaun Livingston and Klay Thompson. The other guard options are Ian Clark and Pat McCaw.

The Kings will still finish with their best record since the 2007/08 season, but at 32-48 they were tied for seventh in Hoops Rumors’ reverse standings entering Sunday. “I think you can go in there and get a bunch of players,” said small forward Rudy Gay. “But I think at the end of the day you have to mesh personalities, you have to mesh talent, you have to do all of that. It’s not just getting a bunch of people on a team — it’s not that easy.”
• Clippers combo forward Jeff Green earned a $100K bonus today when L.A. defeated Dallas for its 52nd win of the season, tweets Bobby Marks of The Vertical. He will receive another bonus of $250K if the team wins its final two games. Both bonuses were stipulated in the contract Green originally signed with the Celtics and will count against the luxury tax for the Clippers.
• Mavericks point guard J.J. Barea credited coach Rick Carlisle with making him a better player in Dallas than he was in Minnesota during an interview with ESPN Radio 103.3 KESN-FM (hat tip to The Dallas Morning News). Barea, the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, signed a four-year, $16MM deal with the Mavs last summer. “There’s nobody who uses me better than [Carlisle],” Barea said. “He knows when to put me in and when to not put me in. I have a great relationship with Dirk [Nowitzki] out there so that always helps me.”

MONDAY, 7:00pm: Elliot Williams, who played five games with the Grizzlies last month, has signed with Panathinaikos of Greece, tweets Chris Reichert of Upside & Motor. The offer was “too good to pass up,” according to Adam Johnson of D-League Digest (Twitter link). Williams was the D-League’s leading scorer, averaging 28.4 points per game with the Santa Cruz Warriors, and his absence means a replacement will have to be found for the league’s All-Star Game, Johnson adds (on Twitter).

The 6’5″ combo guard scored eight points in 45 minutes of playing time in his brief stay with the Grizzlies. Williams signed a 10-day contract with Memphis on January 8th, but he was let go when that deal expired. Once starting point guard Mike Conley returned from injury, the Grizzlies decided to sign Ryan Hollins to a 10-day deal instead.

The 26-year-old Williams has bounced around the NBA, mostly on 10-day contracts, since the Blazers drafted him in 22nd in 2010. He has also played for the Sixers, Jazz and Pelicans.

• The Thunder have assigned Josh Huestis and Mitch McGary to their D-League affiliate, the team announced. This will be Huestis’ ninth stint with the Blue on the season and McGary’s fifth.

• The Bulls are a team in disarray, which is a byproduct of parting ways with former coach Tom Thibodeau, Colin McGowan of RealGM writes. Chicago wanted a coach who was more respectful of the chain of command, and it got that in new coach Fred Hoiberg, but the team has looked sluggish on offense and disinterested in defense far too often this season as a result of the switch, McGowan contends.
• Kings shooting guard Ben McLemore‘s playing time has suffered due to the offseason additions of Rajon Rondo and Marco Belinelli, and the third-year player is still trying to adjust to his new role, Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee writes. “I think I’m still trying to find my flow on this team,” McLemore told Jones. “I know what I need to do. I’m just trying to figure it out. Last year I figured it out pretty fast. Now I need to get over this hump and push from there.”
• If the Cavaliers are to maximize their potential this season, power forward Kevin Love will need to fully embrace his role as the team’s third star, Kevin Cottrell Jr. of NBA.com writes. Love has struggled with his touches and role being reduced since arriving in Cleveland, something that Chris Bosh, a former teammate of LeBron James, cautioned could become an issue when the trade for Love was first announced, Cottrell notes.
• LSU’s Ben Simmons tops the latest mock draft from ESPN’s Chad Ford (Insider subscription required). The combo forward is followed on Ford’s list by Duke’s Brandon Ingram and Croatian big man Dragan Bender, who round out the top three.

MONDAY, 11:13am: The Grizzlies will sign center Ryan Hollins, whom Memphis recently waived, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reports (on Twitter). In adding Hollins, the Grizzlies are expected to let guard Elliot Williams go after his 10-day contract expired Sunday, Charania adds. Marc Stein of ESPN.com tweeted earlier today that the Grizzlies would not re-sign Williams.

This will mark Hollins’ third go-around with the Grizzlies. Memphis waived him on January 7th after signing him on December 29th. Hollins was with Memphis during training camp, but the Grizzlies waived him before the season started. Hollins had a strong showing in training camp, but it just wasn’t enough for the Grizzlies to keep him, Ronald Tillery of The Commercial Appeal detailed last month.

The addition of Hollins signals that Mike Conley’s return is imminent, Chris Herrington of The Commercial Appeal tweets. Hollins is averaging 1.7 points and two rebounds per game this season, which includes five games with the Wizards and four with the Grizzlies. Hollins signed with Washington following his initial release from the Grizzlies, but the Wizards waived him December 23rd.

• James Ennis hasn’t seen much playing time with the Grizzlies, but he’s too much of a bargain to get rid of, Herrington argues in the same piece. Ennis came to Memphis from Miami in a November 10th deal, but has appeared in only seven NBA games and has made eight trips to the D-League. However, he is signed for next season at a little more than $980K, and Herrington says that value made it a wise decision to keep him over Ryan Hollins last week when Memphis signed Elliot Williams to a 10-day contract. Herrington also speculates that Hollins could be brought back after Williams’ deal expires Sunday.
• Matt Barnes hasn’t changed his mind about Knicks coach Derek Fisher in the wake of the October incident that led to a two-game suspension for Barnes, writes Ian Begley of ESPN.com. The former friends haven’t been on speaking terms since an alleged physical confrontation October 3rd at the home of Barnes’ estranged wife, and Barnes said he plans to keep it that way when the Grizzlies host the Knicks tonight. “I just don’t like him, plain and simple. He knows I don’t like him,” Barnes said. “Don’t say nothing to me, I don’t plan on saying nothing to him. Don’t try to shake my hand. There’s none of that. There’s nothing there. There never will be. Just stay away from me basically.”

• The Suns‘ Ronnie Price won’t be able to resume basketball activities for at least three weeks after having surgery on his right big toe, tweets Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic. Surgeons had to remove “loose bodies” from the toe. The veteran guard has appeared in 34 games this season.
• The 10-day contracts signed by the Suns‘ Lorenzo Brown and the Grizzlies‘ Elliot Williams will both expire on Sunday, tweets former Nets executive Bobby Marks. He notes that both teams will have the option of offering a second 10-day contract.
• The Rockets have recalled K.J. McDaniels from their Rio Grande Valley affiliate in the D-League, the team tweeted today. McDaniels has appeared in just 11 games with Houston after signing a three-year, $10MM deal in the offseason.

• Improved defense, better 3-point shooting and the presence of Patrick Beverley in the starting lineup instead of Ty Lawson have sparked the Rockets to improved play, as Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com details, but GM Daryl Morey isn’t satisfied. “I’m worried given our goals,” Morey said, according to Watkins. “We still have a lot of improvement to do and we’re working towards that.”
• The performance Matt Barnes has put on for the Grizzlies lately makes it clear his controversial October encounter with Knicks coach Derek Fisher isn’t a distraction to the team and that he’s been one of the most valuable Grizzlies on the court, writes Ronald Tillery of The Commercial Appeal. The 35-year-old has maintained his high level of defensive play all season, and more recently he’s begun to regain his usual shooting touch, Tillery notes. Barnes delivered pithy comments to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, saying, “I don’t talk to snakes” when asked if he’ll speak to Fisher while the Knicks are in Memphis for Saturday’s game. Barnes sent threatening text messages to Fisher in the weeks preceding Barnes’ alleged physical attack on Fisher at the home of Barnes’ estranged wife, a source told Marc Berman of the New York Post.
• A pair of small trade exceptions expired for Southwest Division teams this week, vestiges of the three-team trade that sent Jeff Green to the Grizzlies. The Pelicans allowed their $507,336 Russ Smith trade exception to lapse, while the Grizzlies didn’t find a use for the $396,068 leftover scrap of the Quincy Pondexter trade exception. Memphis used most of that Pondexter exception, originally valued at $3,146,068, to take in Luke Ridnour, whom the Grizzlies promptly flipped for Barnes.
• Chris Herrington of The Commericial Appeal doesn’t think the Grizzlies will issue a second 10-day contract to Elliot Williams, whose existing 10-day deal expires at the end of Sunday (Twitter link).

“You don’t recruit individual free agents,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. “You define your brand as a team and attractiveness as a team to all free agents. We don’t do something geared to one guy. We try to show: ‘Here, this is who we are and this is what we stand for and this is our culture.’ That’s our recruiting message. We don’t try to be anything to anybody. We try to be ourselves and hope that that’s a good fit. You can’t try to alter who you are for one free agent. It just won’t work.”

• Lakers coach Byron Scott says his relationship with young power forward Julius Randle is like that of a father and son, and the coach believes that Randle requires some tough love from time to time, Mike Bresnahan of The Los Angeles Times writes. “The thing that I told him is that he’s probably never had adversity in his life on a basketball court because he’s been so good everywhere he’s been,” Scott said. “This is the first time that he’s had to face it. I told him, ‘You’re going to have to deal with it. And the way you deal with it is going to determine how great you’re going to be as a basketball player.’”
• Elliot Williams, who inked a 10-day contract with the Grizzlies this past week, believes he can provide a spark with his fresh legs and defensive abilities, Ronald Tillery of The Commercial Appeal relays. “I can fit in pretty well defensively,” Williams said. “I know most of the guys already from staying here in the offseason and playing with them in the offseason. I’m familiar with the team and I’m looking to come in here and make an impact.”

THURSDAY, 12:58pm: The Grizzlies are expected to sign Elliot Williams to a 10-day contract, reports Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). It’ll necessitate a corresponding move, since Memphis already has 15 players on its roster. Ryan Hollins joined the club just last week, while James Ennis has a partially guaranteed contract. JaMychal Green does, too, though he’s an unlikely candidate to hit waivers. All salaries for this season become fully guaranteed if not waived by 4:00pm Central today.

Memphis will become the fourth team to sign Williams to a 10-day contract in the past two seasons, since he had 10-day deals with the Jazz, Hornets and Pelicans last year, as our 10-day Tracker shows. He didn’t end up sticking for the balance of the season with any of those three teams, though he was back with Charlotte for the preseason before the Hornets again let him go. The five-year NBA veteran who was the 22nd overall pick in 2010 joined the D-League affiliate of the Warriors in early November, and he’s put up impressive numbers in 16 appearances for that club, averaging 28.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.9 turnovers in 40.9 minutes per game.

The 26-year-old has also canned 36.1% of his 3-pointers in the D-League this season, a key stat for Memphis, which lacks outside shooting, but Williams is just a 31.2% shooter from behind the arc over the course of his NBA career. The Grizzlies, at a disappointing 19-18, begin a key six-game homestand Friday.

In news around the NBA:

• The Cavaliers are leaning toward retaining combo guard Jared Cunningham, a source informed Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com. Unless Cleveland waives Cunningham by the close of business Thursday, his $981,348 salary for the remainder of the season is guaranteed. It’s a bigger money commitment than that, since his salary would cost the Cavs approximately $3.8MM in luxury tax if no other changes are made to the roster. Cunningham will accompany the Cavs on their upcoming road trip, McMenamin continues, and is viewed by them as a young, versatile bench player who has endeared himself to his teammates. Joe Harris‘ potentially season-ending injury will not influence Cleveland’s decision, McMenamin adds.
• Jason Terry could be closing out more games for the Rockets, considering the way interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff gushed about him to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. Terry, who has shared the point guard spot with Ty Lawson and Patrick Beverley, made a key basket and assist that lifted Houston to a two-point win over the Jazz on Monday. “Jet is clutch,” Bickerstaff said. “He’s been that way since I can remember, since he was in college at Arizona. In the big moments, when a big shot is needed, Jet makes those plays.”
• The Thunder assigned small forward Josh Huestis to their D-League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, according to the team’s website. Huestis has already appeared in 10 games for the Blue.

The Hornets were one of them, and they gave him a partial guarantee of $80K when he signed with Charlotte this past summer. That was slightly more than the $75K the team gave rookie Aaron Harrison, but the team kept Harrison and released Williams at the end of the preseason. Williams saw action in only two preseason games for Charlotte, averaging 5.5 points in 13.0 minutes per contest.

Santa Cruz is also adding Daniel Orton, another former first-round pick who last appeared in the NBA during the 2013/14 season, reports Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports (Twitter link). It’s yet more talent for a team that won the D-League championship last spring, matching the NBA title that the parent club won, but Williams and Orton have no direct ties to Golden State and remain free to sign with any NBA franchise.
