Cavs Notes: Kidd-Gilchrist, Fournier, Melo, Leonard

The Cavs hold picks No. 4 and No. 24, but unlike other teams with two first-round draft choices, they aren't looking to trade one of them. The team seems to be zeroing in on Harrison Barnes with the fourth pick, but Mary Schmitt Boyer of the Plain Dealer says a scenario is in play that could have them leaving Barnes on the board.

Fournier Won’t Participate In Draft Combine

Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress (via Twitter) confirmed that Evan Fournier will not participate in this year's NBA Draft combine (Fournier's agent, Bouna Ndiaye, first tweeted the news). The 19-year-old, 6'7'' wing player is currently rehabbing an ankle injury, but will still attend EuroCamp.

Fournier recently finished his second season in the Pro-A French League, averaging 14 PPG, 42.5% shooting, and 1.2 steals per game in 30 games. He is currently slotted to go #22 overall on the DraftExpress mock draft board.

Draft Updates: Fournier, Kleber, Nedovic

When the NBA released its official list of early entrants for the NBA draft, 17 international prospects were among the players named. Three of those international players are in the news, so let's round up the updates:

  • Wendell Maxey of Ridiculous Upside passes along reports that French guard Evan Fournier injured his ankle Wednesday in New Orleans and had to use crutches after the game. Fournier is considered this year's top international prospect and a likely first-round pick, but his status for this weekend's workout in New Jersey is up in the air.
  • German forward Maximilian Kleber will likely withdraw from the draft, according to an interview with Heinnews.com (hat tip to Maxey). Kleber suggests that he was advised to enter the draft to get his name out there, but that his chances of being selected are too low to remain in the player pool. Chad Ford of ESPN.com has Kleber ranked 81st on his list of 2012 prospects, though the German doesn't crack DraftExpress.com's top 100.
  • Serbian guard Nemanja Nedovic is also expected to withdraw from consideration for the 2012 draft, tweets Emiliano Carchia of Sportando, per agent Misko Raznatovic. Nedovic ranks 60th on DraftExpress' list of top prospects, and 62nd on Chad Ford's.

Draft Notes: Fournier, Lottery, Jazz, Wolves

With the 2012 NBA Draft scheduled for Thursday June 28th, we should expect to see more and more early entrant decisions and mock drafts as the next two months progress.  Luke Adams recently posted an index page for our Prospect Profile series, which should become more complete as we near the draft.  Let's take a look at some draft updates as we head into Friday night's games:

  • Jonathan Givony from Draft Express takes a look at Evan Fournier, and he says could be the only international player taken in this year's first round.  Givony says the 19-year-old Frenchman is, at 6-foot-7 with a good frame, the ideal size to play wing in the NBA, but needs to work on his jumper.
  • Chad Ford in an ESPN insider piece provides a detailed look at the race for the top selections in June's draft as well as many of the existing trade scenarios that will help to shape the order.  The Jazz, in particular, are an interesting case – they can still end up with two lottery picks, or they can end up with none.
  • Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press takes a look at the Timberwolves' draft situation, who will have an eye on the Jazz's final few games of the season.  Minnesota traded away their own first rounder, but should the Jazz make the playoffs the Wolves would get their first rounder as part of the Al Jefferson trade.  Walters says Minnesota is desperate for a shooting guard.
