Gary Neal

Western Rumors: Neal, Miller, Teodosic

The Spurs, like the Thunder last season, have largely stood pat the summer after winning the Western Conference title. The substitution of Marco Belinelli for Gary Neal stands as the most significant change in San Antonio, but, just as Oklahoma City was frequently overlooked in favor of the Lakers in 2012, the Spurs don't appear to be clear favorites to make it back to the Finals. The Thunder are lurking, the Rockets and Warriors have made major upgrades, while the Clippers, Grizzlies and perhaps the Nuggets could also win the West. Here's more on the Spur who got away and other news from the Western Conference:

  • The Timberwolves never spoke with agent David Falk or anyone else from Neal's camp about signing the guard before he reached agreement yesterday with the Buckstweets Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities.
  • Nikolaos Lotsos, the agent for Serbian-born guard Milos Teodosic, tells Sports.ru that his client rejected an offer from the Grizzlies so that he can continue his career overseas (translation via Sportando).
  • Darius Miller's minimum-salary contract with the Pelicans became fully guaranteed for the coming season when the team elected not to waive him by the end of yesterday. Previously, the deal had been completely non-guaranteed.

Bucks Close To Signing Gary Neal

The Bucks are close to finalizing a deal with free agent guard Gary Neal, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com. (via Twitter).  Sources tell Stein that Milwaukee took the lead after Neal's agent, David Bauman, broke off discussions with the Hawks.

The Bucks and Hawks were the leading pursuers of Neal after the Spurs withdrew their qualifying offer, which made Neal an unrestricted free agent.  A deal is now expected to be completed today between Neal and Milwaukee.

Neal's one-year qualifying offer was worth about $1.12MM and would have allowed the Spurs to match any bids for him.  The 28-year-old has posted nearly identical numbers in his three seasons in San Antonio, with his averages ranging from 9.5 to 9.9 PPG in 21.1 to 21.8 MPG.  However, after posting a 41.9% three-point rate in each of his first two years, that mark fell to 35.5% in 2012/13.

Southwest Rumors: Neal, Jackson, Ellis, Dalembert

Yesterday, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reported that the Spurs were in the "process of" withdrawing their qualifying offer to Gary Neal. The RealGM transactions log indicates that the move indeed took place, and if that's so, the timing is key. Yesterday was the deadline for teams to unilaterally withdraw qualifying offers without having to get the player's consent. Teams that pull QOs after the deadline also automatically lose Bird rights to those players. So, the Spurs have not only saved themselves the trouble of getting Neal's permission by presumably withdrawing his QO yesterday, but they've also given themselves more flexibility to re-sign him, if they choose. Here's more on Neal and other notes involving Southwest Division clubs:

  • It's been a couple weeks since Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times mentioned that the Bucks were among the teams interested in Gary Neal, but today Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio indicates that Milwaukee remains in the running (Twitter link).
  • It appears that this year's 42nd overall pick will play in France. Pierre Jackson, whom the Pelicans acquired as part of the Jrue Holiday/Nerlens Noel trade, has agreed to sign with ASVEL Villeurbanne of France, according to Gabriel Pantel-Jouve of Catch-and-Shoot (translation via Emiliano Carchia of Sportando).
  • Now that the Mavs' signings of Monta Ellis and Samuel Dalembert are official, Mark Deeks has provided contract details for them on the Mavs page at ShamSports. Ellis has a three-year, $25.08MM deal with a player option in the final season, and Dalembert gets two years and $7,568,030, with only a $1.8MM guarantee in year two. Dalembert also has a 15% trade kicker.
  • Chandler Parsons believes that he had a critical influence on Dwight Howard's decision to sign with the Rockets, as the big man's new teammate tells Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.

Gary Neal To Become Unrestricted Free Agent

The Spurs are in the process of withdrawing their qualifying offer to Gary Neal, making him an unrestricted free agent, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.com (via Twitter). The move increases the likelihood that Neal will end up landing with a team besides San Antonio, with Stein adding (via Twitter) that the free agent guard is expected to be "snapped up quickly."

Neal's one-year qualifying offer was worth about $1.12MM, and allowed the Spurs to match any bids for him. Had Neal signed an offer sheet with another club, the Spurs would have had three days to decide whether to match it or let him walk. Now, the 28-year-old will be able to sign outright with a rival suitor.

Neal has posted nearly identical numbers in his three seasons in San Antonio, with his averages ranging from 9.5 to 9.9 PPG in 21.1 to 21.8 MPG. However, after posting a 41.9% three-point rate in each of his first two years, that mark fell to 35.5% in 2012/13.

It's not clear where Neal will land once he becomes an unrestricted free agent, but Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times reported a couple weeks ago that the Bucks were one of four interested teams.

Spurs Sign Marco Belinelli To Two-Year Deal

JULY 11TH: The Spurs have officially signed Belinelli, the team announced today in a press release.

JULY 4TH: The Spurs have reached an agreement on a two-year deal with Marco Belinelli, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com (via Twitter). Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports first reported that the two sides were engaged in serious discussions.

Belinelli, an Excel Sports client, is coming off a one-year deal with the Bulls, having averaged 9.6 PPG while shooting 35.7% on three-pointers in 2012/13. The 27-year-old signed for the bi-annual exception last summer, and will receive a slight raise this year. According to Wojnarowski (via Twitter), the two-year deal will pay Belinelli about $6MM.

Having reached agreements to bring back Tiago Splitter and Manu Ginobili, the Spurs almost certainly won't have any cap space available during the offseason, though the club should have the full $5.15MM mid-level exception at its disposal. Presumably, part of that MLE will be allocated to Belinelli, but there still should be $2MM+ left to use another player. Alternately, Belinelli could be signed using cap room if the club decides to amnesty Matt Bonner and let Gary Neal walk, but I think that scenario is probably less likely.

Still, it's unclear where the agreement with Belinelli will leave Neal. The Spurs hold the free agent guard's Bird rights, so they have the flexibility to bring him back if they so choose, but Belinelli may be in line to receive many of the minutes that otherwise would have gone to Neal.

Odds & Ends: Stiemsma, Brewer, Bucks

A few random notes from around the league on this busy Tuesday evening.

Spurs Likely To Re-Sign Neal; Bucks Interested

10:35am: Neal is likely to re-sign with the Spurs, a league source tells Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com (Twitter link).

8:41am: Updates on Gary Neal have been scarce so far this month, with the 28-year-old's name only surfacing in discussions about how the Spurs' agreement with Marco Belinelli affects Neal's future in San Antonio. When the Spurs and Belinelli agreed to terms, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported that there were "strong indications" Neal would be leaving San Antonio, since he was receiving interest from rival clubs at a higher price than the Spurs were willing to offer.

At the time, it wasn't clear which teams were in play for Neal, but Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times reports (via Twitter) that the Bucks are a potential suitor. According to Woelfel, Milwaukee is one of four teams interested in the restricted free agent guard.

With Neal's Bird rights in hand, the Spurs will have the opportunity and the means to match any offer sheet he signs with another team. However, with Belinelli on board, it's not clear whether there will be enough minutes to go around. I would guess the Spurs will still be open to bringing Neal back if the price is right, but it sounds like they'll have plenty of competition.

Stein’s Latest: Nets, Spurs, Cavs, Belinelli, Neal

In between arguments about the relative merits of In-N-Out Burger, ESPN.com's Marc Stein has found time this afternoon to pass along several nuggets related to free agency. Here are the highlights from the ESPN.com scribe's Twitter account:

  • The Nets are still targeting point guards, with Shaun Livingston and John Lucas III among the players on the team's radar, says Stein (via Twitter). The club lost C.J. Watson to the Pacers in free agency.
  • Prior to agreeing to sign with the Spurs, Marco Belinelli had a more lucrative offer on the table from the Cavaliers, says Stein, adding that Belinelli couldn't resist the lure of the Spurs' "all-world operation" (Twitter link).
  • There are "strong indications" that restricted free agent Gary Neal won't be returning to the Spurs, which is why the team moved quickly to bring Belinelli aboard, tweets Stein. According to Stein (via Twitter), Neal is receiving interest at a price point that San Antonio is reluctant to match.

Spurs In Serious Talks With Marco Belinelli

The Spurs are engaged in "serious talks" with unrestricted free agent Marco Belinelli, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (via Twitter).

Belinelli is coming off a one-year deal with the Bulls, having averaged 9.6 PPG while shooting 35.7% on three-pointers in 2012/13. The 27-year-old signed for the bi-annual exception last summer, and figures to be in the market for a mid-level-type deal this time around.

Having reached agreements to bring back Tiago Splitter and Manu Ginobili, the Spurs almost certainly won't have any cap space available during the offseason, but the club should have its full $5.15MM mid-level exception. San Antonio is likely discussing a deal for Belinelli that would use that MLE, though perhaps not the entire thing — the Spurs could break up that exception and use the $5.15MM to sign multiple players, if they so choose.

According to Wojnarowski (via Twitter), if the Spurs aren't able to reach an agerement with Belinelli, the club still plans to re-sign its own free agent guard, Gary Neal.

Money Time: Upcoming Free Agents In The Playoffs

Three of the four conference finalists should return next season with their rosters largely intact, as the Thunder, Heat and Spurs all have at least eight players with fully guaranteed contracts for next season. By contrast, the Celtics only have four such players, so this week's Money Time has a heavy Boston influence. This week, we'll expand our look at free agents in the playoffs to include players with option years and non-guaranteed deals for 2012/13, and next week we'll wrap it up by identifying the free agents who've had the best and worst postseasons overall.
