Gerald Green

Eastern Notes: Raptors, James, Green

With the Bulls and the Heat staking claim to the top two seeds, the rest of the Eastern Conference playoff picture remains up in the air as the season winds down. The Celtics, currently the fourth seed, are in action tonight against the lottery-bound Nets while the Pacers, a surprising three seed at the moment, battle the Bucks, still in the mix as the ninth seed. Let's check in with the rest of the conference to see what other stories are making headlines.

  • Stephen Brotherston of HoopsWorld considers what the Raptors should do as a franchise after suffering through a disappointing season. Team general manager Bryan Colangelo has cleared a great deal of cap space to build around the team's young talent but still has many holes to fill heading into next season. Brotherston identifies Steve Nash as a potential free-agent signing for the Raptors that would provide the team with a buzzworthy star they have been lacking the past few seasons.
  • It may have taken awhile, but LeBron James and his family have finally reached a level of comfort where they feel at home in Miami, writes Ethan J. Skolnick of the Palm Beach Post. The former Cavs superstar may not know how to speak Spanish or how to get around Miami without a GPS, but James is enjoying being able to raise his two sons in South Florida for the majority of the year. James' affinity for Florida living has positively impacted his game as he is currently averaging 26.8 PPG and 7.9 RPG on the season.
  • A. Sherrod Blakely of Comcast SportsNet tweets Gerald Green would prefer to re-sign with the Nets, but would consider signing with the Celtics. Green, originally taken in the first round of the 2005 draft by Boston, had been out of the league since the 2008/2009 season before signing the first of two 10-day contracts with the Nets in February, where he has made the most of his opportunity. The forward from Gulf Shores Academy in Houston should attract significant attention this summer given his 13.0 PPG and 3.3 RPG in 25 games with the Nets.

Lakers Have Interest In Gerald Green

Gerald Green is under contract with the Nets for the remainder of 2011/12, having signed a rest-of-season deal after inking a pair of 10-day contracts with the team. Before the Nets picked up Green though, the Lakers were closely tracking him, GM Mitch Kupchak told Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com. However, the team didn't feel like there was room on its roster for the 26-year-old swingman.

"If you look at him as a small forward, he would have been our fifth small forward behind Metta [World Peace], at the time Luke [Walton], Matt Barnes and Devin Ebanks," Kupchak said. "So, as painful as it was to watch a kid really grow and you get to know a kid, there was just no way to bring him on the team and have him sit and justify it."

Green was playing for the Lakers' D-League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders, prior to being called up by the Nets, making it especially tough for the Lakers to miss out on him. In 20 games for New Jersey, Green has averaged 11.6 points with a .494 FG% in 23.3 minutes per contest. When the two sides negotiated Green's deal, they decided not to extend it through next season, though the former first-round pick has talked about returning to the Nets next year. The Lakers figure to keep an eye on the situation this summer, and haven't ruled out making a play for Green.

"I’m happy for the kid," Kupchak said. "I hope he plays well for the rest of the year and based on how things play out, we’ll take it from there."

Atlantic Notes: Knicks, O’Neal, Lopez, Nets, Celtics

Gerald Green signed with the Nets for the remainder of the season yesterday, but he hopes and expects to remain a Net longer than that, as he told Fred Kerber of the New York Post.

"Me being here is good. I think the team wants me here," Green said. "Next year, I don’t think I’m going anywhere. I’m going to be here and I think we can definitely work something out. I wanted the team to have all the flexibility it could for what they want to do in the offseason so they’re fine with that. I’m not trying to go anywhere. So we’ll just finish out this season and see how it goes."

Here are a few more Monday updates out of the Atlantic Division:

  • Carmelo Anthony says that the Knicks have been more relaxed since Mike Woodson took over as head coach, tweets Al Iannazzone of Newsday.
  • Jermaine O'Neal tweets that he's not sure what his basketball future will hold.  Earlier today, the Celtics announced that the veteran will have to undergo surgery on his wrist and will miss the remainder of the season.
  • Brook Lopez was disappointed earlier this season when the Nets didn't offer him a contract extension but coach Avery Johnson says that the center isn't holding a grudge, writes Stefan Bondy of the Daily News.  Lopez also heard his name pop up in trade rumors once again at the trade deadline as the Nets reportedly offered him to Milwaukee for Monta Ellis.
  • Scott Schroeder of Ridiculous Upside thinks that Green's success with the Nets could make scouts re-examine some so-called failed prospects that are having success in the D-League.
  • After a quiet trade deadline, the Celtics' future is uncertain, writes Paul Flannery of WEEI.com.
  • In a separate piece for WEEI.com, Flannery examines how the deadline deals impact the Celtics.
  • Mike D'Antoni never viewed himself as a locker-room therapist, which was a factor in his parting ways with the Knicks, says Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Nets Re-Sign Green For Remainder Of Season

11:45am: The Nets have officially come to terms with Gerald Green on a contract that will keep him in New Jersey for the rest of the 2011/2012 season.

8:52am: With his second 10-contract set to expire on Sunday, Gerald Green is close to signing a deal with the Nets that will keep him in Newark for the remainder of the season. Initial reports suggested that the contract would extend beyond this season, but both parties want to keep their options open moving forward, writes Fred Kerber of the New York Post. Green, 26, is averaging 18.6 PPG over his last five contests after spending the majority of the past two seasons playing overseas before signing with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of D-League prior to the start of the 2011/2012 season.

“I’ve seen a lot of players on 10-day contracts and I would say what he’s done, independent of tonight’s game, he’s been really good,” said coach Avery Johnson.

The former first-round draft pick by the Celtics in 2005 has had an inconsistent career ever since entering the league seven seasons ago. After a nondescript rookie season, Green showed signs of promise during his sophomore campaign where he averaged 10.4 PPG while grabbing 2.6 RPG. The former Mavericks forward has enjoyed a career renaissance during his 11-game stint with the Nets as he is currently averaging 11.7 PPG in 21.9 MPG.

Gerald Green Expects To Re-Sign With Nets

Gerald Green's second 10-day contract is set to expire this weekend, but don't expect Green and the Nets to part ways when the deal ends. Green tells Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News that, although the paperwork isn't official yet, he plans to sign with the Nets for the remainder of the season (Twitter link).

Green, who had been playing for the D-League for most of the season, has been very impressive in his stint with the Nets, averaging 11.0 PPG on 51.3% shooting in nine games. In the last week, the 6'8" forward has been especially productive, averaging 21.0 points in just 26.2 minutes per game over his last three contests.

Nets GM Billy King told New York's WFAN this morning that the team is in talks with Green to keep him for not just this season, but for next year as well (hat tip to Andy Vasquez of the Bergen Record).

Nets Re-Sign Gerald Green

The Nets have officially re-signed Gerald Green to a second 10-day contract, tweets Colin Stephenson of the Star-Ledger.

Fresh off an MVP performance in the D-League's All-Star Game, Green signed with the Nets last Monday. In his brief stint with New Jersey, the 26-year-old has averaged 18.6 minutes per contest, with double-digit scoring in his first two games with the team.

Given all the injury problems New Jersey has faced over the course of the season, Green should continue to provide valuable depth and minutes in place of sidelined players like Damion James, Shawne Williams, and Keith Bogans. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Nets sign the former first-round pick for the rest of the season when his second 10-day contract expires.

GM Billy King first told Andy Vazquez of the Bergen Record on Tuesday that the Nets would re-sign Green (Twitter link).

Atlantic Notes: Celtics, Pierce, Nets, Green

Last night, the Celtics topped the Nets at home 107-94 for their third straight win.  The C's are now one game over .500 and will look for another intra-divisional W tomorrow afternoon when they face the Knicks tomorrow afternoon.  Here's more out of the Atlantic..

Atlantic Notes: Celtics, Green, Elson, Humphries

No Atlantic teams are in action tonight, but we have a few links from out of the division to round up….

  • The Celtics are very active in trade discussions, and HoopsWorld's Alex Kennedy's sources expect the club to make a deal in the next couple weeks (Twitter link).
  • Currently playing on a 10-day contract, Gerald Green has a decent chance to stick with the Nets for the remainder of the season, says Colin Stephenson of the Star-Ledger. I provided an update on this season's 10-day deals earlier today.
  • While it wasn't reported at the time, Francisco Elson appears to have signed a pair of 10-day contracts with the 76ers, according to the team's game notes (PDF link). HoopsHype reported today that the team has waived Elson, but I believe it's just a matter of his second 10-day deal, signed on February 21st, expiring.
  • Tom Ziller of SB Nation explores whether or not the Celtics should trade Rajon Rondo in the next two weeks.
  • Reports of Kris Humphries having returned to agent Dan Fegan are premature, says Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). The Nets forward is leaning toward Fegan, but is currently without representation.

Nets Sign Gerald Green To 10-Day Contract

Gerald Green has officially signed a 10-day contract, the team announced (Twitter link). He'll take the roster spot that was vacated when Andre Emmett's 10-day deal expired.

Green had been a member of the D-League's Los Angeles D-Fenders, and was the MVP of this weekend's D-League All-Star game. He has averaged 19.1 points in 22 games on the season.

The 26-year-old Green last appeared in the NBA in 2009 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks when he averaged 5.2 points in about 10 minutes per game.  The Nets will be his fifth NBA franchise, as the forward also had stops in Boston, Houston and Minnesota.

Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio first reported (via Twitter) that Green would sign with the Nets.

Odds & Ends: Iverson, Lin, Green, Kaman, Heat
