Warriors To Sign Jaleel Cousins To Exhibit 10 Deal

The Warriors are signing center Jaleel Cousins to an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link). Golden State doesn’t currently have an opening on its 20-man roster, so a corresponding move will be required to finalize the signing.

Cousins, the younger brother of Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins, went undrafted in 2016 after playing his college ball at South Florida. Since then, he has played for the G League’s Texas Legends and Reno Bighorns, and also spent time with the Formosa Dreamers in Taiwan. The Warriors figure to waive him shortly and have him play for their own G League affiliate in Santa Cruz.

Golden State is currently carrying six players on non-guaranteed contracts, though one of those players – Alfonzo McKinnie – is reportedly receiving a two-way deal. That leaves five other candidates to be cut to make room for Cousins — Deyonta Davis, Marcus Derrickson, Danuel House, Kendrick Nunn, or Tyler Ulis.

And-Ones: Salary Cap, Munford, Christmas, Barber

James Johnson and Taurean Prince have been fined $25K each after getting into a shoving match in Thursday’s match-up between the Hawks and Heat. According to the league’s official website, Prince was assessed the fine for “forcefully pulling down” Hassan Whiteside, and Johnson was penalized for escalating the situation by throwing an elbow at Prince. In a show of appreciation for his teammate’s loyalty, Whiteside told Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald he would pay Johnson’s $25K fine.

Other notes from around the league…

The NBA has reduced its salary cap estimate from $103MM to $102MM for the 2017/18 season, Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders reports. Additionally, the luxury line is projected for $122MM; an increase from this season’s $113.287MM.
Xavier Munford agreed to terms with FC Barcelona, according to Fersu Yahyabeyoglou of Euro Basket. After starting 2016/17 with the D-League’s Greensboro Swarm, Munford will spend the rest of the season in Barcelona. Munford averaged 5.7 points through 14 games with the Grizzlies last year.
Italian professional basketball team Vuelle Pesaro is targeting Dionte Christmas, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. A former Temple Owls standout, Christmas made NBA appearances with the Pelicans and Suns in 2013/14.
Sacramento’s D-League affiliate, The Reno Bighorns, claimed Jaleel Cousins out of the available player pool, according to the team’s official website. Jaleel is the brother of Kings center DeMarcus Cousins. This will be Cousins’ second D-League team in 2016/17, having played in 15 games for the Texas Legends earlier this season.
The Delaware 87ers acquired Aaron Harrison from the Greensboro Swarm for Anthony “Cat” Barber and the rights to Sam Thompson, according to Keith Porter of Philly.com. While Barber has yet to make his NBA debut, Harrison has appeared in five games with the Hornets this season.

NBA D-League Affiliate Players For 2016/17

Throughout the offseason, and in the weeks leading up to the start of the regular season, NBA teams are permitted to carry 20 players, but that total must be cut down to 15 in advance of opening night. However, up to four players waived by teams before the season can be designated as affiliate players and assigned to their D-League squads.

The players have some say in the decision — if they’d prefer to sign with a team overseas, or if they get an opportunity with another NBA club, they’re free to turn down their team’s request to have them play in the D-League. Most NBA and international teams have fairly set rosters by late October though, so having the opportunity to continue playing in the same system is appealing to many of those preseason cuts. Especially since they’ll maintain NBA free agency while they play in the D-League.

There are a few other rules related to D-League affiliate players. A player whose returning rights are held by a D-League team can’t be an affiliate player for another club, which is why undrafted free agents from the current year are commonly signed and assigned. Additionally, an affiliate player must have signed with his team during the current league year, which explains why we often see players signed and quickly waived in the days leading up to the regular season. And, of course, not every NBA team has a D-League affiliate, so clubs like the Hawks, Nuggets, or Clippers have no place to send affiliate players.

With all that in mind, here are the NBA D-League affiliate players to start the 2016/17 season:

Southwest Notes: Stephenson, Green, Cousins

The Pelicans have 16 players under contract and it appears the final roster spot is between Lance Stephenson, whose contract is non-guaranteed, and Alonzo Gee, John Reid of The Times-Picayune notes on Twitter. New Orleans has until 5:00pm eastern time on Monday to make a decision.

Danny Green will miss three weeks with a quad injury, according to the team’s website. Green missed the Spurs‘ final preseason game on Friday and Kyle Anderson started in his place.
C.J. Williams and Jaleel Cousins are expected to play for the Texas Legends, the D-League affiliate of the Mavericks, according to D-League Digest (Twitter link). Both players were waived by Dallas earlier today.
DeMarcus Cousins will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2017/18 season and the Mavericks are expected make a hard push to sign the big man, Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com tweets.

Mavericks Waive Five Players, Keep Dorian Finney-Smith

5:35pm: The team has indeed waived the five players, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com confirms (Twitter link).

SATURDAY 5:25pm: The Mavs will waive Jonathan Gibson, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com (ESPN Now link). MacMahon adds that Dallas will opt to give Dorian Finney-Smith its 15th and final roster spot, meaning the team will also waive Kyle Collinsworth, Keith Hornsby, Jaleel Cousins and C.J. Williams.

Gibson’s release is particularly surprising because his minimum salary deal is fully guaranteed for the upcoming year. Dallas also chose to keep Nicolas Brussino, whose contract became guaranteed on Thursday.

Brussino and Finney Smith are both forwards and the Mavericks appear to be looking for upside and versatility in the players they keep at the end of their bench. Gibson, who turns 29 next month, doesn’t fit that profile. He can score the ball, but he has limitations on the defensive end.

Mavericks Sign Jaleel Cousins

The Mavericks have added a big man to their roster, announcing in a press release that they’ve signed former South Florida center Jaleel Cousins to a contract. Terms of the agreement aren’t known, but Cousins will almost certainly get a minimum-salary contract with little or no guaranteed money.

Cousins, who went undrafted in June, is the brother of All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins. The younger Cousins averaged 8.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG, and 1.6 BPG in his senior year at South Florida in 2015/16, appearing in all 33 games for the team. He also spent some time with the Mavs in July, playing for the club’s Orlando Summer League squad.

As is the case with many signings of undrafted free agents at this point, the Mavs likely added Cousins with an eye toward having him join their D-League team. Because Cousins wasn’t previously affiliated with another D-League club, he’d be eligible to join the Texas Legends if and when he’s waived by the Mavs.

Dallas is now back at 20 players on its preseason roster, having cut Jameel Warney on Sunday.
