James Anderson

Hawks To Sign James Anderson

On Friday night, Danny Green tweeted congratulations to former Spurs teammate James Anderson on his "new deal with Atlanta." According to Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Hawks have indeed invited Anderson to join the team's camp, as confirmed by GM Danny Ferry. Based on Green's tweet, it seems Anderson has accepted the offer.

According to Cunningham, Anderson is likely to be signed to a summer contract, and figures to receive a non-guaranteed deal for 2012/13 with a strong camp. Anderson's numbers in his two seasons with San Antonio were hardly eye-opening (3.7 PPG in 11.5 MPG in 77 contests), but the 6'6" wing was a standout scorer at Oklahoma State, and is still just 23 years old. If his contract with Atlanta is non-guaranteed and for the minimum salary, it could be a nice bargain for Ferry and the Hawks.

Even after adding Anderson, the Hawks will still have room to add at least one more player before camp begins. Assuming Anderson and second-round pick Mike Scott, whose signing has yet to be announced, are on board, Atlanta would have 14 players under contract.

Odds & Ends: Anderson, Bosh, Bryant, Najera

According to a tweet from Spurs guard Danny Green, James Anderson may have reached an agreement with the Hawks. Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express-News says the possible signing would make sense, being that current Atlanta GM Danny Ferry worked in San Antonio last season, where Anderson played.

On this Friday night, here's a look around at some other NBA related news circulating around the league.

Southwest Rumors: Anderson, Pargo, Miles

The Rockets have arguably been the Southwest team in the news most often this month, as they've pursued restricted free agents and continued to try to land a superstar like Dwight Howard via trade. For now though, Daryl Morey and the Rockets are playing the waiting game, as they wait to see whether the Knicks will match their offer sheet for Jeremy Lin. In the meantime, here are a few updates on Houston's division rivals….

Southwest Notes: Anderson, Odom, Hornets

If the NBA season ended today, the Southwest would be the only division to send four teams to the postseason. Only the Hornets would fall short, with the Spurs, Mavericks, Rockets, and Grizzlies already a combined 31 games over .500 (81-50). Let's check in on the latest updates from one of the league's strongest divisions….

  • James Anderson's agent has encouraged the Spurs to trade his client, reports Buck Harvey of the San Antonio-Express News (via Twitter). The 22-year-old has appeared in 49 career games (11.2 MPG) for the Spurs since San Antonio drafted him 20th overall in 2010. While Anderson may not be receiving as much playing time as he'd like, it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to leave a team on an 11-game winning streak.
  • Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle says expectations for Lamar Odom should be kept in check, writes Jeff Caplan of ESPNDallas. "I would love for Lamar to be the kind of high-impact player that he is supposedly advertised as being," Carlisle said. "But the truth is, he has been a consistent player…. I think we’re really looking for spectacular things from him on a night-in, night-out basis; that’s not who he is." Odom's 9.8 PER since joining the Mavs in a preseason trade is a significant drop-off from his career rate entering the year (17.1).
  • The Hornets are going through some growing pains, but GM Dell Demps tells John DeShazier of the Times-Picayune that he's happy to see some of the team's young players get an opportunity to play.
