Western Notes: Mozgov, Spurs, Calathes, Scott

Teams asked the Nuggets about potential trades for Timofey Mozgov last winter and throughout the summer, writes Chris Dempsey of The Denver Post, indicating that the Cavs aren’t the only opposing club interested in the 7-footer. While Mozgov remains in Denver for the time being, the Nuggets’ frontcourt depth might mean the club is willing to ship him away for a lucrative enough return. As we wait and see if Mozgov remains in blue and gold, let’s round up the latest from out west:

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich indicated that camp invitees Bryce Cotton, Josh Davis, and JaMychal Green are likely to remain with the team through the preseason, tweets Jeff McDonald of the Express-News.
Chris Herrington of The Commercial Appeal doesn’t necessarily see the Grizzlies signing a fourth point guard for depth while Nick Calathes is out with a 13 game suspension. If Memphis does decide to carry a 15th player into the season, however, a one-guard would be the most likely choice. Herrington adds that he’d like to see what Jon Leuer and Jarnell Stokes can do with Kosta Koufos headed towards free agency.
Kevin Ding of Bleacher Report chronicles the events that culminated in the Lakers’ decision to hire new coach Byron Scott. Ding opines that the extensive history Scott has with the franchise will mesh well with Los Angeles’ young cast of players, making him an exceptional hire for the Lakers.

Eric Pincus has once more updated his Basketball Insiders salary pages, and included in his changes are a few tidbits of previously unreported news on players who’ve signed this summer. We’ll pass along those items here:

The two-year deal that Jerrelle Benimon signed with the Nuggets is for the minimum salary and is partially guaranteed for $35K this season, while his 2015/16 salary is non-guaranteed, Pincus reports (Twitter link).
The Blazers gave Diante Garrett a $30K guarantee in the first year of his two-year minimum salary deal, but the second year is non-guaranteed, Pincus notes on Twitter.
Patric Young‘s two-year deal with the Pelicans is a minimum-salary arrangement that’s partially guaranteed for $55K this season, but it’s otherwise non-guaranteed, Pincus notes (Twitter link). Darius Miller‘s deal with the team is partially guaranteed for $400K this year but otherwise non-guaranteed, Pincus adds.
Both Will Cherry‘s and Jordan Hamilton‘s salaries are guaranteed for $25K for the 2014/15 season, Pincus tweets, adding that Hamilton’s pact is for the minimum. The Raptors signed Cherry to a two-year minimum salary deal, and Hamilton to a one-year arrangement. Cherry’s salary for 2015/16 is non-guaranteed, Pincus adds.
Dwight Powell‘s deal with the Cavaliers is fully guaranteed for the first season, with the second year non-guaranteed, Pincus reports (Twitter link). The contract covers just those two seasons, as Pincus notes.
The Spurs‘ two-year deal with JaMychal Green is for the minimum salary and has a $60K guarantee for this coming season, Pincus reports (Twitter link). It’s non-guaranteed for 2015/16, according to Pincus.
Sim Bhullar‘s deal is for one year and comes with a guarantee of $35K, while Eric Moreland‘s three-year contract is guaranteed for $200K this coming season and is otherwise non-guaranteed, Pincus notes (Twitter link). Both players are with the Kings, and, according to Pincus, make the minimum.
The two-year, minimum-salary deal that Jordan Clarkson signed with the Lakers is fully guaranteed for this coming season, but the 2015/16 season is non-guaranteed, Pincus reports (Twitter link).

Spurs Sign JaMychal Green

The Spurs have signed forward JaMychal Green per a team announcement. The 24-year-old has been under the radar since signing in France last year, as evidenced by his sparse Hoops Rumors player page.

The deal is partially guaranteed, and runs for two years, tweets Shams Charania of RealGM. San Antonio has 14 guaranteed contracts already on the books for 2014/15, and restricted free agent Aron Baynes and summer signee Bryce Cotton have potential to take the last spot. Cotton’s signing is relevant in considering Green’s arrangement, as the former will receive only $50K in guaranteed money if he fails to make the Spurs’ opening night roster. The Spurs extended a qualifying offer to Baynes and are interested in bringing him back.

Green went undrafted in 2012 and spent all of 2012/13 in the D-League. He spent training camp with the Clippers last year, but was cut before the season. He averaged 12.3 PPG and 8.1 RPG on .496 shooting in the D-League.

International Notes: Powell, Blue, Green

A few more NBA camp invitees have landed jobs overseas, so let’s round up the latest news in today’s collection of international notes….

Josh Powell was one of the Knicks‘ camp casualties last week, but he’s found a new gig in China, where he’ll join the Guangdong Southern Tigers, tweets Evan Wang of Hupu.com (hat tip to Sportando). Powell is no stranger to international ball, having played for Olympiacos in Greece in 2012/13, following stints in Puerto Rico and China.
After leaving Marquette a year early and spending camp with the Sixers, Vander Blue has signed in Israel with Maccabi Rishon Lezion, according to the Israeli Basketball League (via Twitter). The 6’5″ shooting guard helped lead Marquette to the Elite Eight in last season’s NCAA tournament, averaging 18.3 PPG in the team’s four March Madness games.
JaMychal Green, who joined the Clippers for a brief camp stint this month, will head to France to play for Chorale Roanne, says Alexandre Lacoste of Catch-and-Shoot (hat tip to Sportando). Green, a former Alabama forward, played for the D-League’s Austin Toros last season.

Clippers Waive Green, Farrakhan

The Clippers announced today that they have waived JaMychal Green and Mustapha Farrakhan, trimming their roster down to 16 players. The two combined for 11 minutes of play during Monday night’s preseason victory against the Trail Blazers.

Farrakhan has spent the past two seasons on several teams in the D-League, posting averages of 8.0 PPG, 2.5 APG, and 1.9 RPG. In 40 games with the D-League’s Austin Toros last season, Green averaged 12.3 PPG and 8.1 RPG.

Farrakhan spent the 2012 preseason with the Bucks, while Green participated in the Spurs training camp.

Clippers Sign JaMychal Green

Free agent power forward JaMychal Green will join the Clippers in training camp, according to Mark Deeks of ShamSports.com, who tweets that Green has signed with the team. Green figures to compete for a regular-season roster spot with other bigs in camp, including Brandon Davies and Louis Amundson.

Green, an Alabama product, went undrafted last June, and joined the Spurs for training camp. When he didn't make San Antonio's regular-season roster, he joined the club's D-League affiliate, the Austin Toros. The 23-year-old appeared in 40 games for Austin, including 25 starts, and averaged 12.3 PPG and 8.1 in 24.2 minutes per contest for the season.

The Clippers are currently carrying 13 players on guaranteed contracts, leaving a couple roster spots potentially available for the likes of Green, Davies, Amundson, and Maalik Wayns.

Spurs Waive Wesley Witherspoon, JaMychal Green

The Spurs have officially waived camp invitees Wesley Witherspoon and JaMychal Green, the team announced today in a press release. The moves reduce San Antonio's roster to 15 players, the maximum number allowed in the regular season.

Witherspoon, signed in late September by the Spurs, played in three preseason games, averaging 8.3 PPG. Green, meanwhile, quietly signed with the team on October 22nd and didn't see any preseason action. Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News speculated earlier this week that both players could be released soon to join the Spurs' D-League affiliate, the Austin Toros. I expect that will be the case, especially for Green, whose signing doesn't make a lot of sense otherwise.

With 15 players under contract now, San Antonio may be finished making cuts. If that's the case, it's good news for Josh Powell, who currently represents the 15th man on the team's roster. His contract won't be fully guaranteed until January, so the Spurs could decide to keep him for the first few weeks of the season and release him before they're on the hook for his full salary. DeJuan Blair and Gary Neal also have non-guaranteed contracts, but their roster spots aren't in jeopardy.

Western Notes: Jordan, Lakers, Suns, Blazers

Back in August, when we asked Hoops Rumors readers for their Rookie of the Year pick, over 44% of about 1,050 voters selected Anthony Davis, making him the top choice by far. Davis is off to a promising start, averaging a double-double in five preseason games and making a strong impression on Hornets coach Monty Williams.

"He’s just a coach’s dream," Williams said, according to Bill Ingram of HoopsWorld. "He handles the situations with wisdom that’s beyond his years. He listens, he’s humble, and yet he still has an edge…. He’s going to be pretty special if he continues to work and allow himself to be coached the way he has so far. He’s just an amazing kid."

Here are a few more of today's notes from around the Western Conference:

A number of recent reports have linked Jerome Jordan to teams in China, but for now Jordan is still hoping to make the Grizzlies' regular season roster, writes Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I know my agent has been talking to a bunch of teams. You know, as a worst-case scenario," Jordan said. "I don't know if there's a deal, per se, in China. But it's about making it in the NBA this year. I'm about trying to make it in the league and establish myself. I want to be around a long time."
The Lakers are expected to waive second-round pick Darius Johnson-Odom soon, tweets Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.
Making an educated guess, Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic predicts that Luke Zeller and Diante Garrett will earn spots on the Suns, and explains his reasoning.
Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News wonders if two players under contract with the Spurs, Wesley Witherspoon and JaMychal Green, will be released soon to join San Antonio's D-League affiliate.
Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts says he expects to keep Nolan Smith as the team's backup point guard over Coby Karl, as Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com tweets. Karl himself indicated this week that he's bracing for news of his release.
ESPN.com's John Hollinger (Insider link) wouldn't be surprised if the Blazers consider moving Wesley Matthews at this season's trade deadline.
