George’s return to play will be determined in the coming days. He played just 13 minutes against Chicago on Saturday before exiting with the finger injury.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse is optimistic George will return soon, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin tweets. “I think it is day to day,” he said. “It’s not major.”

• Sixers rookie Jared McCain admitted to a group of reporters, including McMenamin, he took the news hard when he found out in December he’d require season-ending surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. “I started crying,” McCain said. “It was very tough to hear how long I’d be out for and to know I’ve worked so hard to be in the NBA and now it just gets taken away from me so quick. So, it was tough, especially that night. … Luckily, I’m good now and I got a little cane with me, so taking it step by step.” McCain was part of a pool of players on Tuesday chosen for the Rising Stars event, though he obviously can’t participate. His rehabilitation so far has been limited to walking on an altered-gravity treadmill.
• Knicks big man Karl-Anthony Towns is continuing to battle through a sprained right thumb and bone chip in the finger. It has affected his three-point shooting — he is three for his last 14 attempts, Dan Martin of the New York Post notes. “Man, it’s been a struggle,” Towns said. “I looked bad. I’ve been worried myself.”
• Scottie Barnes has continue to expand his game and that’s a huge development for the rebuilding Raptors, Michael Grange of Sportsnet writes. Barnes is averaging career highs in points (20.2 per game) and assists (6.6) and his on-ball defense has also improved.
• The Raptors are expected to be active on the trade market with a willingness to facilitate bigger moves by other teams in order to accumulate more assets. Blake Murphy of Sportsnet offers a trade primer, including the team’s current cap sheet, trade pieces, and available exceptions.

As usual, the Rising Stars event will consist of four teams and three games. The seven G League players will comprise one team, while the other 21 players will be drafted to three squads on February 4.

The four teams will be split into two first-round matchups and the winners of those two games will face one another for the Rising Stars championship. The two semifinals will be played to a target score of 40 points, while the final will be played to a target score of 25 points.

All three contests will take place on Friday, February 14 as part of All-Star weekend’s opening night. The winning team will compete on Sunday in a similar four-team tournament, with the three other rosters made up of NBA All-Stars.

A handful of injury replacements will be necessary, with McCain, Lively, and Brandon Miller among the players who won’t be available to suit up. Additionally, since players selected as All-Stars won’t play in the Rising Stars event, Wembanyama will almost certainly need to be replaced.

McCain was previously listed as out indefinitely, but the Sixers are shutting down any speculation about a potential return this season with this announcement.

While the announcement doesn’t come as a major surprise, it’s still a big blow to a Sixers team that continues to struggle with injuries. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George missing varying amounts of time during the season’s opening months, McCain looked like a bright spot in a season with few of them in the early going.

The No. 16 pick in the 2024 draft, McCain burst onto the scene as a Rookie of the Year favorite with his play through the first two months of the season. In 23 games (eight starts), he averaged 15.3 points while shooting 38.3% from three on 5.8 attempts per game.

McCain was on a hot streak after being named a starter, averaging 18.2 PPG and making 39.4% of his threes.

When McCain underwent surgery in December, the Sixers’ announcement suggested that he underwent a full repair of his meniscus, rather than a meniscectomy, a procedure that involves removing the meniscus. A player who undergoes a meniscectomy can often return within a couple months, but a repair typically results in a significantly longer absence.

Philadelphia has stayed in the playoff picture in the wake of his injury, winning eight of its last 12 games entering Thursday. The Sixers are just one game back of the Bulls for the final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.

Saint Joseph’s forward Rasheer Fleming and Illinois guard Kasparas Jakucionis have also been impressive during the first two months of the college season. Fleming is now receiving first-round consideration, while Jakucionis is solidifying his projected lottery status.

• While the 2025 draft class has received plenty of hype, the top of the 2026 draft could be even more impressive, according to Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. Wing AJ Dybantsa is the top player in his class, while Cameron Boozer and Darryn Peterson have also generated some buzz regarding their futures. One NBA executive suggested to Vorkunov that teams might start positioning themselves for the 2026 draft ahead of this year’s trade deadline.
• Unsigned NBA veteran guard Devonte’ Graham may have earned at least a 10-day deal with his outing in the G League Showcase, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic. Graham had a 24-point game for the South Bay Lakers. Graham spent training camp and the preseason on a non-guaranteed contract with the Trail Blazers before being waived. A few other unaffiliated players stood out, Hollinger adds, with Grand Rapids Gold guard Jahmir Young heading that group. He had 50 points in two games. He was waived by the Nuggets during training camp.
• The race for the Rookie of the Year award is wide open, The Athletic’s Fred Katz notes. With the Sixers‘ Jared McCain sidelined, Grizzlies‘ second-rounder Jaylen Wells currently tops Katz’s ballot. He lists Pelicans big man Yves Missi second and Spurs wing Stephon Castle third but any number of players could emerge from the pack in the coming months and challenge for top honors.

“I call him Unc Lowry,” McCain said of Lowry. “Grandpa. Super vet. Super duper vet.”

McCain is now sidelined indefinitely after undergoing a left knee surgery. But prior to that, the No. 16 pick in this year’s draft was looking like a bona fide Rookie of the Year contender. Lowry’s tutelage has abetted the rookie’s early-season rise.

McCain had earned the Sixers’ starting shooting guard role by early November, but was versatile enough to also spell All-Star starter Tyrese Maxey at the point when he sat. Lowry talked him through that transition on the floor.

“Sometimes when I’m out there on the court, and I’m the only point guard out there, it’s hard for me to kind of adjust to being a shooting guard or a point guard,” McCain said. “Knowing where everybody is at on the court, being able to talk, being vocal. I’ve just got to adjust and be a leader.”

• On Thursday, the Sixers got the green light from Philadelphia’s city council – on a vote of 12-5 – to construct a new $1.3 billion stadium downtown, per ESPN/The Associated Press. Local activists and residents from nearby Chinatown had been protesting the proposed deal. Sixers ownership hopes to relocate the club from its current home, Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia, to this new locale by 2031.
• Although the Grousbeck family, majority owners of the Celtics franchise, had claimed they hoped to offload a majority ownership stake in the franchise by late 2024 or early 2025, no such agreement is yet on the horizon, a source informs Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. The source tells Himmelsbach that prospective buyers are still waiting on initial meetings with Celtics ownership, with bidding expected to tip off in January.
• Nets forward Cameron Johnson is trying to ignore growing trade chatter ahead of this year’s February 6 deadline, reports Brian Lewis of The New York Post. “We’ve communicated that: Be where your feet are,” Johnson told Lewis of his conversations with Brooklyn brass. “I think the understanding is, don’t get caught up in things that we can’t control or things that are off the court when we have so much to worry about on the court.” Through his first 26 games this season, the 6’8″ vet is averaging 19.2 points (on .489/.431/.874 shooting splits), 4.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per night.

McCain experienced left knee soreness after a game against Indiana last week and underwent an MRI on Saturday, which revealed the extent of the injury.

The 16th overall pick of June’s draft after one college season at Duke, McCain has been one of the most productive rookies in the NBA this fall, averaging 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 25.7 minutes per game, with a .460/.383/.875 shooting line in 23 appearances. He was named the East’s Rookie of the Month for games played in October and November.

It’s a blow to the Sixers, though they are getting healthier at the guard spots. Tyrese Maxey, Eric Gordon and Kyle Lowry are all back in action after dealing with assorted ailments.

As we noted earlier today, McCain’s recovery timeline will depend on whether he underwent a full repair of his meniscus or a meniscectomy, which involves removing the meniscus. While the Sixers’ announcement doesn’t provide confirmation one way or the other, the wording suggests it was the former, which typically results in an absence of several months.

“You hate it for him,” Sixers forward Caleb Martin said, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “He’s playing at such a high level, man. He’s such a great kid, and brings such good energy, and you know that does really hurt. Everybody feels for him and really, really hates that for him. It just (stinks).”

“I think it’s definitely going to be hard (to replace him),” big man Guerschon Yabusele added. “I think Jared is one of a kind, a kid with a lot of energy, no fear, being able to bring so many good things for us on offense. I think it’s going to be hard.”

The Sixers announced that McCain will require surgery, but it remains unclear what kind of procedure he’ll undergo. As Jeff Stotts of In Street Clothes tweets, the location of a meniscus tear determines whether the cartilage can be repaired or if it must be removed. The recovery timeline for a removal is often measured in weeks, whereas a full repair typically sidelines a player for multiple months.

Here’s more on the 76ers:

• Veteran shooting guard Eric Gordon, an offseason free agent addition, fell out of Philadelphia’s rotation after struggling early in the season, but played 26 minutes and made three 3-pointers on Monday in his first appearance since November 30. Head coach Nick Nurse suggested prior to Monday’s game that Gordon was “one of the candidates” to play more minutes as a result of McCain’s injury. “I think the first step is if somebody is out of the rotation, what are they doing to try to get themselves back in, right?” Nurse said, per Pompey. “Eric has come in here (on Saturday) and had a great workout. He’s trying to get himself back in there. He’s trying to stay ready and be ready to go.”
• Joel Embiid‘s sinus fracture is “not nearly as severe” as the two orbital bone fractures the star center previously sustained, Nurse said on Monday, according to Steve Reed of The Associated Press. While Nurse acknowledged Embiid’s “breathing isn’t going to be easy for a little bit” and the Sixers ruled him out for at least one week, it’s possible his absence won’t extend much beyond that. According to Stotts (Twitter link), Embiid’s first orbital fracture sidelined him for 22 days, while the second kept him out for eight days, though in each of those cases he returned in the postseason, which likely sped up his timeline.
• Paul George‘s performance in Monday’s win over Charlotte was very encouraging, according to Pompey, who says the star forward was moving as well as he has all season, having shed his bulky knee brace. George’s involvement in the offense – or lack thereof – has been a concern as of late, but his 33 points and 20 field goal attempts vs. the Hornets both represented season highs.

According to Fischer, McCain requires surgery and will be out indefinitely. Philadelphia confirmed the news in a press release (Twitter link).

The news is devastating for the 76ers, who have struggled mightily to open 2024/25 amid injuries to Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey, among others. The team hoped to be in title contention, but is currently just 7-16, the No. 12 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Embiid suffered a sinus fracture on Friday as well, though it’s unclear how long he’ll be sidelined as a result of his latest injury.

McCain also had a very hard fall on Friday vs. the Pacers, but a concussion was ultimately ruled out after multiple tests, including one today, per Kyle Neubeck and Derek Bodner of PHLY Sports (Twitter link). Obviously, that’s of little consolation now that the 20-year-old sharpshooter is out for the foreseeable future with a knee injury.

It’s unclear how Philadelphia will look to fill the void of McCain’s pace, energy and scoring, but second-year wing Ricky Council saw an uptick in minutes vs. Indiana and could receive more run going forward.

9:50pm: Sixers center Joel Embiid exited Friday’s loss to Indiana just before halftime after being struck in the face by Pacers wing Bennedict Mathurin and didn’t return in the second half, per The Associated Press.

Mathurin and Embiid were battling for a rebound under the Sixers’ basket when Mathurin’s left forearm and elbow made hard contact with the the right side of Embiid’s face and the bridge of his nose (Twitter video link via Bleacher Report). He fell to the floor and held his face in pain for a few moments before walking to the locker room.

The Sixers announced at the start of the third quarter that Embiid had been ruled out for the rest of the night and would undergo further testing to assess the severity of the injury, per Derek Bodner of PHLY Sports (Twitter links). As Bodner observes, The former MVP has a history of facial injuries, having sustained orbital bone fractures on both the left side of his face (in 2018) and the right side (in 2022). He also dealt with Bell’s palsy during last season’s playoffs.

Sixers head coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the game that Embiid was still being tested to determine whether there are any fractures in the area where he was hit (Twitter link via Bodner). Even if X-rays come back clean, Embiid could end up in the NBA’s concussion protocol, meaning he’d have to pass a series of tests before being cleared to return to action, Bodner tweets.

Friday’s contest was just the sixth of 23 Sixers games that Embiid has played this season. He has missed time due to left knee swelling and was also suspended three games for a locker room run-in with a reporter.

Philadelphia will be back in action on Monday in Charlotte, then won’t play again until hosting the Hornets next Friday, so if Embiid’s injury turns out to be minor, he’ll have plenty of recovery time in the next week. The 76ers figure to provide an update on his status at some point this weekend.

Sixers guard Jared McCain also suffered an apparent head injury when he hit his head on the floor during the second half on Friday, but he cleared the NBA’s concussion protocol and was able to return to the game (Twitter link via Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports).

As Terada writes, Boston is likely just being cautious with the All-NBA forward — the team doesn’t play again until Sunday, giving Tatum a full week of rest. Sam Hauser (right adductor strain) and Jaden Springer (illness) will also miss Thursday’s contest.

• Head coach Darko Rajakovic is understandably disappointed that the Raptors have yet to see all of their young core players share the court together this season, writes Eric Koreen of The Athletic. Scottie Barnes is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a right ankle sprain, and Immanuel Quickley remains sidelined with a left elbow injury. “It would be awesome,” Rajakovic said of seeing the core together. “We have not had our core guys and main guys in their roles pretty much all season. And what it does at the same time, it’s not allowing us to look (at) what our bench would look like when we have those guys in their roles. … I’m staying hopeful that sooner than later we have this situation to look at our full roster, what it looks like. And I think it’s going to be great for guys to get the chemistry of playing together, (growing) together and give us a lot of answers.”
• With the Sixers nearing full strength, what is Jared McCain‘s ideal role? Head coach Nick Nurse hasn’t settled on a decision, but the reigning Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month should get plenty of opportunities either way, as Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer relays. “I’m still not quite sure,” Nurse said. “But I think right now, it looks like he’s kind of an early scorer off the bench at the two. Certainly, we’ll play him some at the one. I could see that changing a little bit somewhere down the road. But [I] really liked him.”
• On Wednesday, the Sixers and Philadelphia’s city council continued to spar about the community benefits agreement portion of the proposal for a new arena, report Sean Collins Walsh and Anna Orso of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Some council members wanted the team to increase its public offer of funding from $50MM to the range of $75-100MM. However, despite some opposition, on Thursday the council gave initial approval of the proposed plan, which includes $60MM in funding from the 76ers for the community benefits agreement, according to The Inquirer. A team spokesperson said the Sixers were reviewing last-minute changes to the deal.

The 16th overall pick in the 2024 draft, McCain didn’t initially project to be part of Philadelphia’s regular rotation and played fewer than four minutes in each of his first two games of the season.

However, injuries cleared a path for him to get minutes and he took advantage of that opportunity, averaging 16.0 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.5 rebounds on 25.2 minutes per game across 18 outings (seven starts) to open his NBA career. McCain also posted a solid shooting line of .448/.364/.906.

Wells, who was drafted with the No. 39 pick in June, is an even unlikelier early-season standout than McCain, but also took advantage of his team being affected by the injury bug and capitalized on an opportunity to play rotation minutes right out of the gate.

In 20 games (15 starts) in October and November, Wells averaged 12.2 PPG, 3.3 RPG, and 1.9 APG in 25.3 MPG. He provided some much-needed outside shooting for the Grizzlies, knocking down 39.4% of 5.0 attempts per night from beyond the arc.

According to the NBA (Twitter link), McCain beat out fellow nominees Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, and Carlton Carrington for Rookie of the Month recognition in the East. The other nominees in the West were Dalton Knecht, Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, Ryan Dunn, and Wells’ teammate Zach Edey.

Russell’s wife is of Lithuanian descent, but today’s statement from the Lithuanian Basketball Federation indicated that there are no grounds for Russell himself, as a foreigner, to be granted citizenship by exception, which can only be approved by the President of Lithuania.

As BasketNews.com notes, Lithuanian Basketball Federation president Mindaugas Balciunas added that national team head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis and general manager Linas Kleiza, “aim to achieve success using our own talent pool.” The naturalized slot on the club’s roster is currently held by Ignas Brazdeikis, who was born in Lithuania but moved to North America as a child, represented Canada in youth international competitions, and had his Lithuanian citizenship restored in 2021.

• Looking ahead to the 2025 NBA draft, Jonathan Givony of ESPN identifies 10 international prospects worth knowing, starting with French point guard Nolan Traore, a projected top-10 pick, and Spanish wing Hugo Gonzalez, a lottery candidate. Israeli guard Ben Saraf, French forward Noa Essengue, and Croatian forward Michael Ruzic are among the other candidates to be first-round picks, according to Givony.
• Also at ESPN.com, Tim Bontemps shares his top takeaways from the first month of the 2024/25 NBA season, noting how important depth has been for many of this fall’s top teams, and ESPN’s NBA insiders make their early award picks, selecting Nikola Jokic (MVP), Jared McCain (Rookie of the Year), and Payton Pritchard (Sixth Man of the Year) as a few of their first-month winners.
• Former NBA big man Tacko Fall has officially finalized a two-year deal with the New Zealand Breakers that will run through the 2025/26 season, per the team. A previous report indicated that Fall would join the Breakers to replace Freddie Gillespie, who left Australia’s National Basketball League to play in the EuroLeague.

“I felt great,” Porzingis said, smiling, after the game. “It was a long rehab, and I was itching to get back out there with this team after winning a championship. It was a good beginning, good first game back.”

As Bontemps points out, while Porzingis’ ability to score around the basket and from beyond the arc will further diversify a Celtics offense that ranks third in the NBA (120.9 offensive rating), his impact on defense figures to be even more significant. Entering Monday’s game, Boston ranked 19th in the NBA in rim defense after placing first in that category last season, Bontemps notes. In Monday’s game, the club set a season high with 11 blocks.

• Already shorthanded entering Monday’s matchup in Golden State, the Nets saw Cameron Johnson leave the game in the first half due to a sprained right ankle and Cam Thomas exit in the third quarter after battling a back issue. They still managed to go on a 27-6 second half run and pull out an upset victory over the Warriors, led by Dennis Schröder (17 fourth quarter points) and de facto center Ziaire Williams (19 points, 10 rebounds), as Brian Lewis of The New York Post details. “Shout out to the guys, we lost two more, but our guys stepped up, made big-time shots,” Williams said. “(Trendon Watford) made big-time shots, and it was a team effort. It was super fun out there.”
• Hawks rookie Nikola Djurisic, the No. 43 overall pick in the 2024 draft, is fully recovered after undergoing foot surgery in July, according to agent Misko Raznatovic, who says (via Twitter) that the 6’7″ swingman is on track to make his G League debut on Tuesday for the College Park Skyhawks vs. the Long Island Nets. Djurisic is essentially a draft-and-stash prospect — he signed a G League contract for the 2024/25 season and Atlanta still holds his NBA rights.
• The 3-13 Sixers have the NBA’s second-worst record, but No. 16 overall pick Jared McCain should be considered the Rookie of the Year frontrunner, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who makes McCain’s case for the award.

As Olgun Uluc of ESPN details, United big man Rob Loe drew a charge on Harrell early in the fourth quarter of the contest, and while both players were on the ground, Harrell shoved Loe. That led to a “melee involving most players” for both teams. Harrell appeared to throw a punch at one opponent and “multiple open-handed strikes” at other United players, per Uluc.

Directly after the on-court scuffle, 36ers staffers and players — including Harrell and teammate Kendric Davis — were involved another altercation, this time with spectators behind the team’s bench. Davis received a two-game suspension for initiating contact in that incident, which saw four spectators ejected. Davis claimed a fan directed racist language at him; the United put out a statement saying they were unable to corroborate that allegation.

The 36ers have 24 hours to appeal the suspensions, according to Uluc, who says Harrell has suggested multiple times on social media he may not return to Australia, pending the outcome of his punishment; he’s currently back home in the United States with the NBL season on pause due to the FIBA window (qualifiers for international tournaments).

Here are a few more odds and ends from around the basketball world:

• In an interview with Sam Yip of HoopsHype, free agent forward Robert Covington says he’s confident he can still contribute to NBA teams. “Ain’t nothing changed,” Covington said. “Someone that can give energy on the other side, the defensive side, can come in space the floor, move the ball, do the little things that won’t show up on the stat sheet, what made me very effective.” The 33-year-old, who holds 11 seasons of NBA experience, dealt with a knee injury for most of last season, last suiting up on December 30, 2023, but he says he’s fully healthy now. Covington is currently playing for Team USA in a qualifying round for the AmeriCup. One recent report said he might be open to playing in the G League as he attempts to make it back to the NBA.
• Former NBA guard Raul Neto has signed a rest-of-season contract with Spanish club Barcelona, as Johnny Askounis of Eurohoops relays. Neto, who played eight seasons in the NBA from 2015-23, missed all of last season with a knee injury, but he’s “fully recovered” now. Barcelona was looking for backcourt help after losing Nicolas Laprovittola to a season-ending ACL and meniscus injury, Askounis notes.
• Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports lists his award winners for the first month of the 2024/25 season. As of now, O’Connor has Nuggets center Nikola Jokic as the frontrunner to win his fourth MVP in five years, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama leading the race for Defensive Player of the Year, and Sixers guard Jared McCain as the league’s top rookie.
• On a somewhat related note, with the first month of the season finished, several writers for The Athletic to compiled a list of each team’s biggest concern, with one exception — the 17-1 Cavaliers don’t have a have a real weakness right now, says Joe Vardon.
• Magic guard Anthony Black and Rockets guard/forward Amen Thompson are two of the six young players John Hollinger of The Athletic highlights as showing marked improvement in their season seasons.

“I was ecstatic that we found somebody that can give me relief and a break, so I don’t have to have the ball in my hands so much,” Maxey said (Twitter video link via Derek Bodner of PHLY Sports). “… So we have another guy out there who can make plays, can shoot the ball, can play off the ball, on the ball. It just makes the game a lot easier.”

When a reporter wondered after Friday’s game whether Maxey (6’2″) and McCain (6’3″) believe they can thrive together as “smaller” guards in the Sixers’ backcourt, Maxey half-jokingly took exception to the premise that the duo is “small,” as Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer relays. Asked by that reporter how tall he is, Maxey shot back, “Taller than you,” while McCain added, “And I’m taller than him.”

“We both play hard,” McCain said in explaining why he and Maxey don’t believe their size will be an issue. “I think a lot of the game is just playing hard. At this point, they’re going to try to get the mismatch. They’re going to have an offensive scheme to try to go at us. But as long as we play hard, I think we will be able to hold our own. That’s something that a lot of people don’t do. And I think we give a lot of effort, give a lot of energy, and I think we can make up for that.”

• Knicks forward Josh Hart won’t turn 30 until March, but the eighth-year veteran believes he’s already in the “back end” of his playing career, he told Steve Popper of Newsday. “I always told my wife, I’m hanging it up around 34 or 35, maybe with God’s grace get 36 in there. But I’ve got hopefully five years left in the league,” Hart said. While the 29-year-old is averaging a career-best 14.1 points per game this season, he suggested he’d be happy to see that number drop if it helps the team get closer to its ultimate goal: “One thing I’ve always wanted was a (championship). For me, that’s more important than the statistics. When you win a (championship), no one remembers how much you scored. No one remembers what your role is. They care about (if) you got a ring. And at the end of the day, I’ve got hopefully five years left, maybe six. I’m on the back end. That’s what I’m trying to accomplish.”
• Veteran point guard Cameron Payne said on Friday that he didn’t really know what his role would be when he signed a one-year, minimum-salary contract with the Knicks during the offseason, but he hopes he’s “starting to turn some heads” with his play so far, per Peter Botte of The New York Post. Payne is averaging 8.2 points in 17.1 minutes per game and has made 44.4% of his three-point attempts. “Honestly, I just wanted to come and help,” Payne said. “When I get out there, I want to be aggressive and just utilize my opportunities. Obviously, I have. I’m in there. I didn’t know, though, coming in. I just wanted to be the best player I could be every day.”
• Although the Nets reacquired control of their 2025 and 2026 first-rounders with the expectation that those picks would be high ones, it’s fine that they’ve exceeded expectations in the early going, according to Brian Lewis of The New York Post, who points out in a subscriber-only article that the club doesn’t want to create a losing culture and that the NBA’s flattened lottery odds don’t necessarily reward the very worst teams. I’d also note that despite picking up a few early wins, the Nets are still tied for the league’s sixth-worst record and will likely get worse as the season progresses and they sell off pieces, so a high draft pick remains very much in play.
