Lakers Sign Jemerrio Jones To 10-Day Deal

DECEMBER 21: The Lakers have signed Jones to a 10-day contract, the team formally announced today (via Twitter).

DECEMBER 20: The Lakers will add free agent forward Jemerrio Jones to their roster on a 10-day contract via the hardship provision, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). Jones won’t count toward the standard 15-man roster, so no corresponding move is required.

Like many of the players who have joined the Lakers this year, Jones has a previous stint with the team. He signed with the Lakers late in the 2018/19 season and appeared in six games for the club down the stretch, averaging 4.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG, and 2.2 APG in 23.8 MPG.

Those six games represent Jones’ only NBA experience to date, as he has spent most of his first four professional seasons in the G League, appearing in a total of 112 games for the South Bay Lakers, Delaware Blue Coats, and Wisconsin Herd. The 26-year-old has averaged 6.5 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, and 1.5 SPG in 11 games (25.6 MPG) for Wisconsin this season.

The Lakers have been one of the many NBA teams hit hard by COVID-19 this month. They currently have five players in the health and safety protocols. A sixth player – Malik Monk – reportedly tested out of the protocols, but has yet to return to action.

Bucks Sign, Waive Rayjon Tucker

OCTOBER 14: The Bucks, as expected, have waived Tucker, JD Shaw of Hoops Rumors tweets.

OCTOBER 13: The Bucks have signed free agent swingman Rayjon Tucker to an Exhibit 10 contract, a league source tells our JD Shaw (Twitter link). In a corresponding roster move, Milwaukee waived Jemerrio Jones, who signed a training camp contract earlier in the week.

Tucker, 24, spent most of the 2019/20 season with the Jazz, then signed a two-way contract with the Sixers in January of 2021. He has appeared in a total of 34 regular season games in his first two NBA seasons, averaging a modest 2.8 PPG and 0.9 RPG in 6.7 minutes per contest.

The Bucks signed Tucker to his very first NBA contract, an Exhibit 10 deal back in August 2019. He appeared in 16 games with the Wisconsin Herd – Milwaukee’s G League affiliate – as a rookie before getting called up to the NBA by Utah.

The Bucks likely envision Tucker returning to the Herd for the 2021/22 campaign, and Jones figures to join him there.

Bucks Sign Jemerrio Jones To Camp Deal

The Bucks have signed free agent forward Jemerrio Jones to a non-guaranteed training camp deal, according to RealGM’s official transactions log.

Jones, 26, played his college ball at Hill College and New Mexico State from 2014-18 before going undrafted. He has primarily played in the G League since going pro, spending time with the South Bay Lakers, Wisconsin Herd, and Delaware Blue Coats from 2018-21. He also had a brief stint at the NBA level with the Lakers, appearing in six games with Los Angeles at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Jones’ best season came in 2019/20, when he averaged a double-double (10.8 PPG, 12.1 RPG) in 42 games (30.4 MPG) for the Herd, Milwaukee’s G League affiliate. He earned a spot on the All-NBAGL Third Team that year.

The Bucks presumably envision Jones returning to the Herd for the 2021/22 season. Assuming his deal contains Exhibit 10 language, he’ll receive a bonus worth up to $50K if he spends at least 60 days with Wisconsin after he’s waived by Milwaukee.

The Bucks, who waived Johnny O’Bryant on Monday, once again have a full 20-man preseason roster after signing Jones.

2020/21 NBA G League Draft Results

The NBA G League held its draft for the 2020/21 season on Monday afternoon.

In a typical year, the G League draft lasts four rounds and teams are only required to make two selections. However, this year’s draft was just three rounds and teams weren’t required to make any picks.

Because only 17 of 28 NBA G League affiliates (plus the G League Ignite) are participating in the revamped season at Walt Disney World in Florida, and because teams aren’t permitted to bring extra players to training camp for health and safety reasons, roster spots will be at a premium in the NBAGL this season, and the draft reflected that. Only 25 players were selected.

With the first overall pick, the Greensboro Swarm – the Hornets‘ affiliate – nabbed former Wizard Admiral Schofield. The 42nd overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, Schofield averaged 3.0 PPG and 1.4 RPG in 33 games (11.2 MPG) as a rookie before being traded to the Thunder during the offseason. Oklahoma City waived him last month.

With the second overall pick, which they acquired in a trade earlier in the day, the Memphis Hustle selected former Baylor standout Freddie Gillespie, who had been in camp with the Mavericks. Gillespie recently spoke to JD Shaw of Hoops Rumors about his desire to make it to the NBA and his plans to begin his professional career in the G League. He’s now in position to suit up for the Grizzlies‘ affiliate.

The teams that didn’t make any picks will fill their rosters with affiliate players and returning rights players, meaning they didn’t need to draft anyone and/or didn’t have the open spots to do so.

As Jonathan Givony of ESPN and Blake Murphy of The Athletic noted (via Twitter), NBAGL teams overwhelmingly opted for youth, passing on most of the notable veteran NBA players in the draft pool. That group included Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers, Lance Stephenson, Emeka Okafor, and Shabazz Muhammad, among others.

Former Nets first-rounder Dzanan Musa removed his name from the draft pool before the event began, per Marc Stein of The New York Times (Twitter link).

Lance Stephenson Among NBA Vets Eligible For G League Draft

As previously reported, the NBA G League’s 2020/21 draft will take place on Monday, January 11. And according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN (Twitter links), there will be some interesting names on the list of players eligible to be selected in that draft.

Veteran swingman Lance Stephenson, former No. 2 overall pick Emeka Okafor, and other recent NBA players like Justin Patton, Jacob Evans, Dzanan Musa, and Admiral Schofield will be part of the draft pool, per Givony. Former first-round picks Terrence Jones and Shabazz Muhammad will be draft-eligible as well.

According to Givony, the following players who have been on NBA rosters in the past are also among the G League’s other draft-eligible veterans: Kenny Wooten, Antonio Blakeney, Tyler Ulis, Quincy Pondexter, Diamond Stone, Hollis Thompson, Cat Barber, Isaiah Briscoe, Phil Booth, Dusty Hannahs, Jemerrio Jones, Cory Jefferson, and Freddie Gillespie.

These, presumably, are players who have signed G League contracts but whose rights aren’t currently held by any teams. A player whose returning rights are controlled by a club participating in the G League’s bubble season wouldn’t be eligible to be drafted.

For instance, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports (via Twitter) that LiAngelo Ball has signed a contract to play in the bubble. Since the Oklahoma City Blue hold his returning rights and are playing in the bubble, Ball shouldn’t be in the general draft pool.

The Blue are one of 18 teams set to participate in the shortened bubble season, which is expected to take place at Walt Disney World. That list of teams can be found right here.

Givony previously reported that the G League is adjusting its roster rules for this season to make it easier for NBA teams to recruit and sign veterans with five or more years of NBA experience. Each NBAGL team will be able to designate an “NBA Vet Selection” who fits that bill and can sign that player directly without navigating the league’s complicated waiver process. My understanding is that those designated won’t be in the draft pool.

NBA G League Announces 2019/20 All-NBAGL Teams

After being named the G League’s Most Valuable Player on Thursday, Wisconsin Herd guard Frank Mason III – who is on a two-way contract with the Bucks – headlines the All-NBA G League First Team, as the league announced today in a press release.

Mason was joined on the All-NBAGL first team by teammate Jaylen Adams, as well as Salt Lake City Stars forward Jarrell Brantley, South Bay Lakers big man Devontae Cacok, and Memphis Hustle forward Jarrod Uthoff. Mason, Brantley, and Cacok are currently on two-way contracts with NBA teams.

That’s a common theme for this year’s All-NBAGL teams. The majority of the 15 players named to the three squads are either currently on two-way contracts or have had NBA experience in the past.

Adams and Jones have previous NBA experience, while Koumadje and Hollins have yet to make their regular-season NBA debuts.

Lakers Notes: Opening Night, LeBron, Kawhi, Jones

Kyle Kuzma is not playing for the Lakers tonight against the Clippers as he recovers from a stress reaction in his left foot. According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com, it’s not clear how long Kuzma will remain sidelined.

“He’s on no-contact, half-court now,” coach Frank Vogel said of Kuzma. “I’m sure we’ll build up to no-contact, full-court with sprinting or potentially half-court with contact. I’m not sure which direction they’re going to take it next, but there will be a progression this week building him up.”

Vogel added that Kuzma has been “impatient” with his injury but is “on board with the plan” that the team has to get him back at full strength.

LeBron James could envision a world where Kawhi Leonard was also on the Lakers, but he isn’t sure why the reigning Finals MVP picked the Clippers in free agency, as McMenamin relays in a separate piece. “Man, how the hell can I answer that? I don’t [expletive] know,” James said jocularly when asked what convinced Leonard to sign elsewhere. “I don’t know. I don’t know. Ask Kawhi.”
Anthony Davis said he had a role in attempting to recruit Leonard. “It was fun just to go through it, for me, with a player like Kawhi, trying to recruit him to come here. It was fun,” Davis said (via McMenamin in the same article). “We had one conversation, and I think he came out with a statement, or his uncle or something … somebody said he don’t really like all the recruitment and all that stuff, so I felt like I overstepped my boundaries…But it was a fun process. I would do it all over.”
The South Bay Lakers have traded the G League rights of Jemerrio Jones to the Wisconsin Herd (Bucks‘ affiliate), per a team press release. The Lakers’ affiliate will receive the No. 8 overall pick in the upcoming G League draft and the Herd’s 2020 first-rounder for Jones, who was recently waived by the Wizards and signed by Bucks on an Exhibit 10 deal.

Bucks Waive Tucker, Lacey, Jones

Rayjon Tucker, Trevor Lacey and Jemerrio Jones are the final three roster cuts for the Bucks, the team announced in its Twitter feed. All three were on Exhibit 10 contracts and are likely to wind up with the Wisconsin Herd, the organization’s G League affiliate.

Tucker signed with Milwaukee in August and appeared in three preseason games, averaging 3.3 points in 9.7 minutes per night. He announced in the spring that he was transferring to Memphis from Arkansas-Little Rock, but opted to keep his name in the draft, where he wasn’t selected. Tucker played for the Bucks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Lacey signed with Milwaukee on Thursday and Jones inked a deal with the team earlier today, so neither saw any preseason action with the Bucks. Jones was waived by the Wizards earlier this week.

Bucks Sign Jemerrio Jones

The Bucks have signed former Lakers and Wizards forward Jemerrio Jones, the team announced today (via Twitter).

Jones, 24, finished the 2018/19 season with the Lakers, averaging 4.5 PPG and 8.2 RPG in six games (23.8 MPG). He was sent to Washington in the three-team Anthony Davis blockbuster this summer for salary-matching purposes, then was waived by the Wizards earlier this week.

Because Jones received a partial guarantee of nearly $200K as a result of his inclusion in the Davis trade, he’s ineligible to sign a two-way contract with any NBA team this season. However, he can still play in the G League.

According to Bobby Marks of ESPN (Twitter link), Jones’ new deal with Milwaukee contains an Exhibit 10 clause and the plan is for him to be waived and to join the Wisconsin Herd to start the season, so he can earn a $50K bonus. Of course, if he gets an NBA opportunity before he spends 60 days with the Herd, that plan could change.

Wizards Waive Justin Anderson, Others; Sign Jalen Jones

After reporting earlier today that the Wizards are signing Anzejs Pasecniks, Fred Katz of The Athletic has the details on several more roster moves made by the team. According to Katz (Twitter links), Washington has waived Justin Anderson, Jemerrio Jones, and Phil Booth, using one of the newly-opened roster spots to sign Jalen Jones to an Exhibit 10 contract.

Booth, an undrafted rookie out of Villanova, is expected to join the Capital City Go-Go – the Wizards’ G League affiliate – for training camp later this month, per Katz. It’s not clear what the next steps will be for Anderson and Jones.

Anderson, the 21st overall pick in the 2015 draft, spent last season with the Hawks, recording 3.7 PPG and 1.8 RPG in 48 games (9.6 MPG). He averaged 9.8 PPG with a .385 3PT% in four preseason games for Washington, though his most memorable moment came when he mixed it up with Marcus Morris, goading the Knicks forward into a Flagrant 2 foul and an ejection.

Jemerrio Jones, meanwhile, was one of three Wizards players acquired from the Lakers as part of the three-team Anthony Davis blockbuster. He played limited minutes in three preseason contests for the club. Jones received a partial guarantee worth just under $200K as a result of his inclusion in the Davis deal, so Washington will have to keep that dead money on its cap this season.

Jalen Jones, a 6’7″ forward out of Texas A&M, has appeared in 32 total games for the Pelicans, Mavericks, and Cavaliers over the last two seasons. He was waived from his two-way contract with Cleveland back in January and finished the 2018/19 season with Baskonia in Spain.

With three players released and two signed, Washington would have 19 players under contract, leaving one opening on its preseason roster.
