John Jenkins

Hawks Pick Up Option On Jenkins, Not Cunningham

The Hawks have announced via press release that they’ve exercised the 2014/15 option on second-year guard John Jenkins, who will make $1.31MM next season. Meanwhile, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the team will not pick up their third-year option on Jared Cunningham.

Atlanta selected the sharp shooting Jenkins out of Vanderbilt with the 23rd pick in the 2012 draft. He averaged 6.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game as a rookie, starting twice in 61 games. He also spent a brief amount of time in the D-League in December. The Hawks acquired Cunningham, taken the pick after Jenkins, in a draft day deal with Dallas. He will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Hawks To Recall John Jenkins

The Hawks will bring John Jenkins back from D-League today, according to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter).  Jenkins was assigned to the Bakersfield Jam along with fellow rookie Mike Scott last week.  Scott is sick and will remain in Bakersfield until he gets healthy.

The 21-year-old was taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Vanderbilt.  Jenkins had an enjoyable two game stint in the D-League, scoring 22 points against the Santa Cruz Warriors in his debut and 29 points against the Los Angeles D-Fenders last night.  The guard saw just 13 minutes across four games this season for the Hawks.

Hawks Assign Jenkins, Scott To D-League

The Hawks are sending rookies John Jenkins and Mike Scott to their D-League affiliate in Bakersfield, according to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter).  The length of stay for both players is to be determined.

Jenkins was taken with the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Vanderbilt.  The 21-year-old guard saw just 13 minutes across four games this season and figures to see more action in the D-League.  Scott, a 6'8" forward, was tabbed in the second-round (43rd overall) and saw 16 minutes of burn in five games.

Hawks Sign John Jenkins

The Hawks have signed first-round pick John Jenkins to a rookie scale contract, the team announced today (via Twitter). Atlanta selected the Vanderbilt shooter with the 23rd overall pick in the June draft.

The rookie scale amount for Jenkins' slot is slightly over $1MM, so the 21-year-old will earn a first-year salary worth a little more than $1.2MM if he signs for the full 120% allowed. Because first-rounders can sign during the moratorium, Jenkins' deal can be finalized immediately.

Prospect Profile: John Jenkins

Vanderbilt's John Jenkins is a hot name with teams picking in the latter part of the first round and with good reason.  He can really shoot.  Jenkins played three years at Vanderbilt and shot over 40 percent from three in every one of them.  His jumper is by far his best feature as a player, so expect playoff teams that could use a sniper off the bench to have interest.

Equally important at the next level will be Jenkins ability to utilize his lethal range in a variety of fashions.  He has an extremely quick release and showed he could shoot off screens and off the dribble in college.  Jenkins' form is picturesque and he has mastered squaring up on his release, making his jumper effective in most in-game situations.
