Western Notes: Lakers, Bonner, Taylor

Projecting the playoff teams in the Western Conference would be difficult enough if it weren’t for the unresolved saga involving Eric Bledsoe and the Suns, but Phoenix is the true X-factor in the equation as it stands. The Suns were 28-15 when Bledsoe played last season, a winning percentage of .651 that would have made them the West’s sixth seed. They were just 20-19 without him, which dragged the team down far enough to miss the playoffs. Of course, there are plenty of other unknowns still at play in the West, and we’ll round up the latest here:

The inclusion of Toney Douglas and Bobby Brown among those in Tuesday’s Lakers workout was somewhat curious, since they both have deals to play in China, but both contracts contain NBA escape clauses, as USA Today’s Sam Amick explains. Douglas intends to head to China regardless and views the audition as an early tryout for when he returns stateside after the Chinese season ends, agent David Falk tells Amick. Brown is interested in joining the Lakers right away if given the opportunity, Amick adds, and presumably so are the rest of the hopefuls who took part in the workout.
Matt Bonner only re-signed with the Spurs for one year, but the 34-year-old would like to play until he’s 40, as he tells Jonathan Demay of the French-language website Basket USA (translation via Jeff Garcia of Project Spurs).
Two Western Conference teams invited former University of Wisconsin point guard Jordan Taylor to camp, but he turned them down to take a deal with Israel’s Hapoel Holon instead, tweets David Pick of Eurobasket.com. A trip to camp with an NBA team would have been a first for the 24-year-old, who spent summer league with the Bucks.

Odds & Ends: Basketball Classic, Age Limit, Draft

Earlier today the Thunder topped the Celtics 91-79 to pick up their fifth straight win. Kevin Durant led the way with 23 points and eleven boards in a well-balanced effort at home. The C's turned in an impressive defensive effort on paper, holding Oklahoma City to their lowest output in nearly two months, but it wasn't enough to down them. In his Sunday column, the Boston Globe's Gary Washburn writes that there has been talk that commissioner David Stern would consider the idea of a World Basketball Classic, similar to baseball’s tournament. However, the challenge for Stern and FIBA would be getting American superstars to play. The major shoe companies may also have to get their taste in such a deal.
Over at HoopsWorld, the staff debated whether players should be allowed to jump straight from high school to the NBA. Of course, there have been a number of standout players who decided to skip college and go directly to the pros from Kobe Bryant to Kevin Garnett to LeBron James. However, there have also been plenty of talented players who weren't ready for the transition like New York's Lenny Cooke.
Yannis Koutroupis of HoopsWorld released his latest 2013 mock draft and has Kansas' Ben McLemore going first overall to the Bobcats. After that, Marcus Smart, Cody Zeller, Shabazz Muhammad, and Nerlens Noel round out the top five.
Virtus Roma point guard Jordan Taylor told Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport that he will likely be in the NBA Summer League, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando (on Twitter). The Wisconsin product was not taken in the 2012 draft and spent time with the Hawks' summer league team before being let go.

The Pistons have a big workout scheduled for next Monday, with Jared Sullinger, Tyler Zeller, Meyers Leonard, John Henson, Terrence Jones, and Perry Jones III expected to attend, tweets ESPN.com's Chad Ford.
Harrison Barnes and a pair of possible second-round candidates will work out for the Wizards tomorrow, the team announced.

Two lottery picks officially entered the draft today, in Andre Drummond and Bradley Beal. As the 2012 class continues to expand, let's round up a few of today's draft-related items….

At Rivals.com, Brett Dawson writes that Kentucky coach John Calipari is anticipating losing five underclassmen to the NBA draft — Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Marquis Teague, Doron Lamb, and Terrence Jones.
Sophomore C.J. Leslie, ranked 34th among this year's prospects by DraftExpress.com, is undecided on his future, tweets Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com. People close to Leslie think he's a good bet to return to N.C. State.
Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor has signed B.J. Armstrong as his agent, according to Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times (via Twitter). The senior point guard is ranked 68th by DraftExpress.
A lot of teams rank Kentucky's Davis as a better prospect than former first overall pick Blake Griffin was, tweets Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com. Howard-Cooper spoke to one executive who cited "substance over style" when comparing Davis to Griffin (Twitter link).
Drummond has "other-worldly" potential and will be a top-five pick, an NBA scout told Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv.
