Jose Calderon

Odds & Ends: Calderon, Suns, Magic, Howard

Ever since the Raptors' acquisition of Kyle Lowry, there has been a steady flow of rumors revolving around Jose Calderon's future, or lack thereof, in Toronto.  Calderon, who will run the point for Spain's Olympic team later this month in London, has already expressed his discontent with the thought of being relegated to back up duties, but according to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun, he may not have a choice.

Wolstat caught up with Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo who said, “We have had a few more trade inquiries regarding Jose (but) the scenario doesn’t seem to present itself to a trade today, but we’ll continue to monitor that and just try to determine whether it’s going to work in the long run.”  Colangelo also implied that amnestying Calderon is not in the plans.

Here are some more updates from around the league on Sunday night:

Landry Fields Signs Raptors’ Offer Sheet

JULY 14TH, 8:38pm: The Knicks will not match Toronto's offer sheet, officially making Fields a member of the Raptors, reports Al Iannazzone of Newsday (via Twitter).

JULY 11TH, 4:31pm: Fields officially signed Toronto's offer sheet today, according to Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com (via Twitter). The Knicks will have three days to decide whether to match it, and figure to take their time, as we heard earlier today.

JULY 3RD, 1:09pm: The third year in Fields' offer sheet with Toronto is worth roughly $8.5MM, tweets Marc Berman of the New York Post. Added to a first-year salary of $5MM and a second-year salary of $5.225MM, that would put the total value of the agreement at a little over $18.7MM. Berman adds that the Knicks are unlikely to match the offer.

Odds & Ends: Lorbek, Magic, Mavs, Nash

Although the Spurs will bring one international prospect stateside this season, having signed Nando De Colo to a contract, another of the team's top international players doesn't appear headed for San Antonio. Spanish club Regal Barcelona announced today that they have re-signed Erazem Lorbek to a three-year deal to remain with the team (English translation via Emiliano Carchia of Sportando). The Spurs, who hold Lorbek's NBA rights, were said earlier this offseason to be "very close" to a deal with the Slovenian forward, so it's a little surprising to see him re-up with Regal Barcelona.

Let's round up a few more Friday morning odds and ends….

Calderon Requests Trade From Raptors

Marc Stein of ESPN writes that Jose Calderon would like to be traded from the Raptors. Calderon is well aware that the team does not plan to waive him with their amnesty clause, but is likely seeking a change of scenery with Kyle Lowry appearing to be the team's new starting point guard. Calderon's agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed that he and Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo are now working to find a deal (Twitter link). Stein cites sources that believe the Raptors prefer to trade the Spanish guard to a team with cap space in order to acquire a trade exception.

Kyler On Calderon, Howard, Blair, Augustin

Jose Calderon's name has surfaced as a possible amnesty candidate a few times this offseason, but according to Raptors president Bryan Colangelo, the team doesn't expect to amnesty Calderon or anyone else this week. While Colangelo acknowledged that Calderon wasn't "thrilled" about the trade that brought Kyle Lowry to Toronto, he still views him as a valuable piece on the roster, as Eric Koreen of the National Post writes. Colangelo confirmed that a few teams have inquired on Calderon, and Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld writes that a trade is much more likely than an amnesty. Here are a few more notes from Kyler's HoopsWorld piece:

Raptors Shopping Jose Calderon

JULY 6th, 3:16pm: There's a "growing sense" around the league that the Raptors will either trade or keep Calderon, rather than amnestying him, says ESPN.com's Marc Stein (via Twitter).

JULY 1st, 11:52am: The Raptors are trying to trade Calderon so that they don't need to amnesty his expiring contract, tweets ESPN.com's Marc Stein. Stein adds in a second tweet that the Raps are seeking a trade partner with a big enough trade exception or chunk of cap space to absorb Calderon's salary. The Nuggets are the only team with a trade exception large enough for Calderon's contract, so finding a deal could be tricky.

Lakers Eyeing Jose Calderon

The Raptors don't necessarily have to amnesty Jose Calderon to create the necessary cap space to make Steve Nash an aggressive offer in free agency, but it seems like the team is at least considering it. Clearing Calderon from their books could give the Raptors the flexibility to try to sign not just Nash, but another quality free agent as well. If Toronto does decide to use its amnesty provision on Calderon, the Lakers may have the inside track on picking him up, says ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Raptors Shopping First Round Pick

9:21pm: According to Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun, the asking price reported by ESPN is a little steep in comparison to what his sources have told him. Wolstat writes that the Raptors are willing to deal the No. 8 pick, but that they aren't willing to package a young talent like Ed Davis in it.

Raptors Rumors: Calderon, Bayless, Casey

News and notes on the Raptors courtesy of Mike Ganter and Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun..

  • Despite some speculation that the Raptors might use their amnesty clause to rid themselves of Jose Calderon's contract, GM Bryan Colangelo club intends to hold on to the point guard.  The 30-year-old is owed $10.56MM next season but Colangelo is impressed by the progress that he has made and his leadership skills.  The article adds that the GM even seems reluctant to use the amnesty clause at all.
  • Guard Jerryd Bayless said earlier this week that he wants to re-sign with Toronto.  Colangelo said that Bayless is a young prospect whom he would be interested in retaining but admitted that he could possibly be moved in a sign-and-trade.   Bayless will have a $7.2MM cap hold until he signs a qualifying offer or new contract, which could hinder the club's off-season flexibility.
  • Head coach Dwane Casey strongly believes that the club can attract elite free agents north of the border.  “All the stuff people say about free agency with Toronto being another country and you’ll have tax problems , all that is crap,” the coach said. “I’m telling you right now. This city is one of the finest cities. It’s a top five city in North America. It’s not even close and I’ve been in all of them. For any free agent who doesn’t think this is a special situation, they are sadly mistaken.”  Casey, who just wrapped up his first year with the club, had his third-year option exercised yesterday.

Odds & Ends: Calderon, Kanter, Blazers

The latest news and notes from around the NBA on Tuesday night:

  • Frank Zicarelli of the Toronto Sun examines the future of Jose Calderon with the Raptors. He says the Spanish guard has played well enough to deserve a long-term commitment from the Raptors, but that trading him might also make financial sense for a rebuilding Toronto team.
  • The Salt Lake Tribune's Brian T. Smith looks at the development of rookie center Enes Kanter, the Jazz' third overall pick in the 2011 draft.
  • The Oregonian's John Canzano wants to see a larger commitment to the future of the Trail Blazers from owner Paul Allen. Canzano also suggests that this could be an opportune time for Allen to sell the team.
  • Philly.com's Bob Cooney has quotes from Sixers CEO Adam Aron, who stresses the organization's commitment to putting a winning product on the floor going forward.
