Rockets Sign Josh Powell

WEDNESDAY, 11:10am: The Rockets have officially announced the deal, via press release. The statement doesn’t mention the team’s reported release of Pittman, but presumably that’s taken place, as well.

10:57pm: Powell passed his physical, signed his contract, and is joining the team soon, tweets Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston.

12:31pm: It’ll be a multiyear deal that’s non-guaranteed beyond this season, reports Shams Charania of RealGM.

TUESDAY, 7:51am: Sources tell Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston that Powell has received his FIBA letter of clearance, and that he’ll sign with the team on Tuesday as long as he passes his physical.

MONDAY, 11:35am: The Rockets will make a move by Wednesday, but no decision regarding Powell has been finalized, Feigen tweets.

SUNDAY, 4:51pm: Reports out of the Philippines say the Rockets, who were earlier reported to be releasing Dexter Pittman, now intend to sign Josh Powell to take his place on the roster, tweets Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. Powell had been playing with Barangay Ginebra in the Philippines after signing with the team on March 30th.

Powell was in camp with the Knicks prior to the start of the 2013/14 NBA season, but the team reportedly had no intention of retaining him for opening night, no matter how well he played in preseason. He was waived by the Knicks in October then penned a deal with Guangdong where he averaged 15.0 PPG and 9.9 RPG, before heading to the Philippines.

In six seasons in the NBA he has career averages of 3.9 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 0.5 APG in 12.5 minutes per contest, but Powell is best known for being a member of two championship winning Lakers teams in 2009 and 2010.

Josh Powell To Play In Philippines

According to David Pick of Eurobasket.com (Twitter link), former NBA player Josh Powell is signing a deal in the Philippines to play with Barangay Ginebra. Powell spent the first half of the season in China playing with Guangdong where he averaged 15.0 PPG and 9.9 RPG. Powell is no stranger to international basketball, having previously played for Olympiakos in Greece in 2012/13, following previous stints in Puerto Rico and China.

Powell was in camp with the Knicks prior to the start of the NBA season, but the team reportedly had no intention of retaining him for opening night, no matter how well he played in preseason. He was waived by the team in October then penned a deal with Guangdong.

Odds & Ends: Knicks, Salmons, Bobcats

The Knicks were bent on injecting youth into their team, and they brought Josh Powell and Ike Diogu to camp with no intention of retaining them for opening night, no matter how well the two veterans played in preseason, a source tells Bleacher Report’s Howard Beck. For now, New York seems engaged in a pursuit of Kyle Lowry as it tries to unload Raymond Felton, who made Ben Golliver of SI.com‘s “All-Atrocious Team.” Here’s more from around the league:

  • New Raptors small forward John Salmons is a “prime candidate” to be dealt again before the trade deadline, writes Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun, pointing to his de-facto expiring contract. No Raptors appear off-limits for a trade.
  • The Bobcats released James Southerland on Wednesday, but not because the organization was disappointed with him, notes Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer. “He was brought in as a developmental player. We like him a lot,” coach Steve Clifford said. “Nothing he did he could have done better. We just needed someone more ready to play.” Charlotte signed veteran Chris Douglas-Roberts to replace Southerland.
  • Pau Gasol hinted that there’s a chance he could sign an extension with the Lakers, during his recent interview with Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com. The possibility of an in-season agreement has seemed like a long shot.
  • A Prim Capital investor was found guilty of obstructing a grand jury investigation into the firm’s ties to the players union, reports Nate Raymond of Reuters. The son of former union executive director Billy Hunter has served as a Prim executive.
  • Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports profiles freelance trainer Rob McClanaghan, who works with some of the NBA’s top players and has exerted influence on front office decision-making.
  • Mark Deeks of ShamSports examines several free agents and D-Leaguers who could be on the radar of NBA teams in a piece for the Score, calling Drew Gooden perhaps the most talented among available big men. Deeks looked at guards on Wednesday.

International Notes: Powell, Blue, Green

A few more NBA camp invitees have landed jobs overseas, so let’s round up the latest news in today’s collection of international notes….

  • Josh Powell was one of the Knicks‘ camp casualties last week, but he’s found a new gig in China, where he’ll join the Guangdong Southern Tigers, tweets Evan Wang of Hupu.com (hat tip to Sportando). Powell is no stranger to international ball, having played for Olympiacos in Greece in 2012/13, following stints in Puerto Rico and China.
  • After leaving Marquette a year early and spending camp with the Sixers, Vander Blue has signed in Israel with Maccabi Rishon Lezion, according to the Israeli Basketball League (via Twitter). The 6’5″ shooting guard helped lead Marquette to the Elite Eight in last season’s NCAA tournament, averaging 18.3 PPG in the team’s four March Madness games.
  • JaMychal Green, who joined the Clippers for a brief camp stint this month, will head to France to play for Chorale Roanne, says Alexandre Lacoste of Catch-and-Shoot (hat tip to Sportando). Green, a former Alabama forward, played for the D-League’s Austin Toros last season.

Knicks Waive Five Players

12:50pm: The Knicks have officially released C.J. Leslie, Josh Powell, and Ike Diogu, as well as Chris Douglas-Roberts and Jeremy Tyler, according to the team (Twitter link). So Chris Smith, Toure Murry, and Cole Aldrich have snagged the three open roster spots.

Tyler’s deal reportedly included a $100K guarantee, so the Knicks will owe both him and Leslie some money.

12:22pm: The Knicks have also cut Leslie, according to Zwerling (via Twitter). While the move had been telegraphed over the last few days, it’s still somewhat surprising, since nearly half of the rookie’s first-year salary was guaranteed.

Zwerling adds that Aldrich appears to have locked up a roster spot, meaning Smith, Tyler, and Murry are likely vying for the final two openings.

11:16am: The Knicks have begun to trim their roster down from the 20-man preseason maximum, according to Jared Zwerling of Bleacher Report, who tweets that the club has released Josh Powell and Ike Diogu. The pair of cuts leaves New York with 18 players under contract, so three more will need to be released by Monday.

Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork, Al Iannazzone of Newsday, and Zwerling all hear that the Knicks are going young with their last few open roster spots. According to both Begley and Iannazzone (Twitter links), Toure Murry, Chris Smith, and Jeremy Tyler are likely to make the regular season roster. Presumably, that would mean that the Knicks would waive Cole Aldrich, C.J. Leslie, and Chris Douglas-Roberts, though Begley adds (via Twitter) that it’s not clear if the club will be making all its moves today.

As for Powell and Diogu, neither player appeared in an regular season NBA game in 2012/13, but they earned camp invites from the Knicks after working out for the team this fall. New York won’t be on the hook for any salary for either player, since they were on non-guaranteed contracts.

SEPTEMBER 30TH: The team has officially announced Powell's signing.

SEPTEMBER 21ST: The Knicks will sign Josh Powell to a non-guaranteed training camp deal, according to a tweet from Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling, who reports that the six-year NBA veteran has agreed to a deal with the team.

Powell worked out with the team last week, and has also recently auditioned for the Pelicans. The 30-year-old Powell has been out of the NBA for the past two seasons, and in 2011 he played for the Hawks. 

Holding a career scoring average of 3.9PPG, Powell is best known for being a member of two championship winning Lakers teams in 2009 and 2010. He was waived by the Spurs last October, but didn't play a game for the team.

Free Agent Notes: Wiz, Byars, Powell

Despite news that Emeka Okafor is out indefinitely with a herniated disc and Chris Singleton will undergo surgery today, the Wizards cannot guarantee money to any free agents to replace them (without letting go of someone else on a guaranteed contract by opening night), tweets NBA.com's David Aldridge.  Washington already has 15 guaranteed deals on their roster, including Okafor and Singleton, but as Aldridge points out (via Twitter), a trade is always possible.  CSN Washington's J. Michael confirms Aldridge's report, via Twitter, adding that the Wizards are likely to bring two or three other players to camp in addition to the 15.

Knicks Worked Out Diop, Aldrich, Others

2:29pm: Jared Zwerling of Bleacher Reports adds DeSagana Diop to the list of players who participated in the Knicks' workouts this week (Twitter link). Meanwhile, Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld isn't sure if Hassan Whiteside worked out for the Knicks, but says the team has expressed interest in the former King (Twitter link).

1:47pm: The Knicks may have 16 players under contract, but the team is still eyeing free agents and weighing the possibility of adding a few more bodies to its camp roster. The club has conducted mini-camp workouts this week, and according to Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com (Twitter links), Ike Diogu, Cole Aldrich, and Josh Powell are among the players who have auditioned.

Reports yesterday indicated that Ricky Davis and Justin Brownlee were also working out as part of the Knicks' mini-camp, so the team seems to be casting a wide net as it searches for potential contributors.

Despite the fact that the Knicks are already carrying more than 15 players, only 12 of those contracts are fully guaranteed. C.J. Leslie and Jeremy Tyler have small guarantees – $200K and $100K, respectively – which could give them an inside track at roster spots, but Tyler is recovering from foot surgery, so it's no surprise that New York is still auditioning big men.

If we assume Leslie will earn a roster spot, that would leave two possible openings for Tyler, Chris Smith, Toure Murry, and up to four more camp invitees.

Pelicans Audition Terry, Powell, Childress

Jared Zwerling of ESPN New York has heard from a source that the Pelicans have worked out Reyshawn Terry, Josh Powell, and Josh Childress over the past two days. Hoopshype also relayed the news from a source who confirmed Powell's audition for New Orleans today (Twitter links).

After officially announcing the signings of Lance Thomas and Arinze Onuaku earlier today, the Pelicans currently have 15 players under contract. It's worth noting that only 13 of those deals are guaranteed, which means that the final two roster spots are still up for grabs. 

Powell last played in the NBA as a member of the Hawks during the 2010/11 season, averaging 4.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and shooting 45.2% from the field in 12.1 MPG. Last November, he signed with the eventual champion Olympiacos Piraeus of the Euroleague after a few short stints in China and Puerto Rico. The 30-year-old power forward enjoyed two championship seasons as a reserve on the Lakers in 2008/09 and 2009/10, and his most productive NBA season to date appears to be with the Clippers in 2007/08, where he posted career bests of 5.5 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and 19.2 MPG in 64 games played.  

Childress, also 30 and a former member of Olympiacos, is looking to land with another NBA team after an underwhelming season on the Nets last year. The former sixth overall pick of 2004 played in just 14 games with Brooklyn, averaging 1.0 PPG and 28.6% shooting overall in 7.1 MPG before being waived in late December. Childress showed some promise in 2007/08 before leaving for Greece over the next two seasons, averaging 11.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 29.9 MPG and shooting an incredible 57.1% from the field in 76 games for the Hawks. However, upon returning to the league three years ago, the 6'8 swingman is still trying to regain his niche in the NBA.

Terry may not have much NBA experience other than his summer league cameos with the Mavericks and Trail Blazers in 2008 and 2010 respectively, but he brings a wealth of international experience to the table. After being selected as the 44th overall pick in 2007, the 6'8 forward headed overseas for the next six years, playing in Greece, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Ukraine, and most recently in Lebanon. Zwerling (via Twitter) noted the opinion of one scout who likened the former North Carolina Tar Heel to "a better version of Chris Copeland," and added that the 29-year-old swingman got off to a late start this summer after being hurt. As a member of Champville SC in Lebanon for 17 games last season, Terry averaged 19.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG, and 36.6 MPG while shooting 56.0% from inside the arc and 37.5% from long range.
