Hawks Waive Gabriel, Ogden Jr.

The Hawks waived forwards Kenny Gabriel and Mark Ogden Jr., according to a team press release.

Atlanta signed Gabriel on Friday and inked Ogden Jr. earlier on Saturday with the intent of making them affiliate players for the College Park Skyhawks, their G League squad.

Gabriel, 30, has spent his professional career playing in a handful of international leagues since going undrafted out of Auburn back in 2012. Most recently, he played for Turkish club Turk Telecom in 2018/19, averaging 9.2 PPG and 5.6 RPG in 43 games.

The 6’9” Ogden has spent the past three seasons overseas with the Georgian team Olimpi (2017-19) and in Luxembourg with Racing Lux (2016-17). Ogden went undrafted after playing his last two college seasons at Dixie State.

Both will be eligible for a bonus worth up to $50K if they spend at least 60 days with the Skyhawks.

Hawks Sign Kenny Gabriel

After waiving four players earlier today, the Hawks have filled one of the newly-opened spots on their roster by signing free agent forward Kenny Gabriel, the team announced in a press release.

Gabriel, 30, has spent his professional career playing in a handful of international leagues since going undrafted out of Auburn back in 2012. Most recently, he played for Turkish club Turk Telecom in 2018/19, averaging 9.2 PPG and 5.6 RPG with a .430/.339/.784 shooting line in 43 games.

While they do have a spot open on their 15-man regular season roster, the Hawks presumably view Gabriel as a potential affiliate player for the College Park Skyhawks, their G League squad.

Assuming Gabriel received an Exhibit 10 contract from Atlanta, he’ll be eligible for a bonus worth up to $50K if he signs a G League contract and spends at least 60 days with the Skyhawks.

After a decade of rumors about his possible return to the sidelines, ABC and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy has finally landed a new coaching gig — but it’s not an NBA job. As Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical details, Van Gundy has agreed to coach USA Basketball as Team USA attempts to qualify for the 2019 World Cup.

Last month, we heard that the Team USA roster for the World Cup qualifiers wouldn’t feature NBA players. Instead, USA Basketball will put together a squad primarily made up of G League players. Wojnarowski notes that the roster may also include Americans playing in international leagues. Assuming Team USA qualifies for the 2019 World Cup, which shouldn’t be an issue, NBA players figure to take it from there, while Gregg Popovich will take over for Van Gundy as the club’s coach.

EuroLeague star Chris Singleton has interviews lined up with two NBA teams, and is poised to opt out of his contract with Panathinaikos if he receives an NBA opportunity, tweets international reporter David Pick. However, Singleton’s teammate Kenny Gabriel will remain with Panathinaikos, having opted to pass on a non-guaranteed NBA offer, per Pick (Twitter link).
Pick also provides an update on Brad Wanamaker, reporting (via Twitter) that Brad Wanamaker is putting Euroleague offers on hold in the hopes of securing an NBA deal with the Pelicans or Celtics. Wanamaker, who played for Turkey’s Darussafaka last season, was voted to 2016/17’s All-EuroLeague team.

The NBA formally removed the All Star Game from Charlotte on July 22nd because of concerns about North Carolina’s House Bill 2, which eliminated anti-discrimination protections for those who fall into the LGBT demographic. It appears the event is close to landing a new venue, with the league closing in on a deal with New Orleans to act as host, Scott Kushner and Brett Dawson of The New Orleans Advocate relay. The 2016/17 NBA All-Star game is scheduled for February 19th, 2017.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle is excited about the team’s addition of Andrew Bogut, who fills a big need for the team at center if he can remain healthy, Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com writes. “You know, it gives us not only a legitimate starting center, but it gives us one of the best centers in the game,” Carlisle said of the trade with the Warriors. “I’m looking forward to getting to know Andrew. He’s overseas in Australia with their national team. And you know, it will be a lot happening quick.”
Forward Kenny Gabriel, who played for the summer league squads of both the Cavs and the Heat this offseason, has signed a one-year deal that will pay him in excess of $1MM with the Russian club Kuban, international journalist David Pick tweets.
Kansas swingman Josh Jackson tops the first Big Board for the 2017 NBA Draft from ESPN’s Chad Ford (Insider subscription required). Rounding out Ford’s top three are Duke freshman Harry Giles and Washington guard Markelle Fultz.

Eastern Notes: Gabriel, Rondo, Thomas

The Cavaliers have expressed interest in forward Kenny Gabriel, who has received an invitation to attend training camp with the team, Antonis Stroggylakis of Eurohoops.net relays. If Gabriel decides to remain overseas, he’s likely to sign with the Russian club, Lokomotiv Kuban, Stroggylakis notes. He appeared in 51 games last season for Pinar Kasiyaka, also in Russia, notching averages of 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds on 47.1% shooting. The 27-year old was a member of Cleveland’s squad in the Las Vegas Summer League this year, where he averaged 7.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

The Bulls‘ addition of point guard Rajon Rondo could pay dividends for the team, Sam Smith of NBA.com writes, noting that Rondo’s reputation as being a disruptive force is a bit overblown. Rondo believes he and fellow new arrival, Dwyane Wade, will mesh well together, Smith adds. “I think I’m coming off one of my best seasons,” said Rondo. “I didn’t miss any games as far as injuries. I feel great. Dwyane’s been doing the same. We’re a little bit older in age, but I think that’s wiser. I’ve talked to Wade. I think we’ll be a very talented team, a very versatile team, especially at the guard position. To play with a guy like that, that I’ve battled against personally, it’s always great to have a guy like that on your side.”
The free agent spending boom sparked by the league’s new TV deal this summer has many role-players earning higher salaries than the Celtics‘ All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas, who will be paid $6,587,132 for his work in 2017/18. Thomas isn’t bitter about his situation, but the player does worry if these larger deals will affect locker rooms around the NBA, Chris Forsberg of ESPN.com writes. “Hopefully it doesn’t mess up any locker rooms, hopefully it doesn’t mess up ours, but it can,” said Thomas. “Definitely if you get paid that much, you feel like you should have a bigger role than whatever that role is. But hopefully for the betterment of the team and the guys we have around the locker room, I don’t think it’s going to happen.“
Despite feeling the pressure to add a superstar to the Celtics‘ roster, team executive Danny Ainge should hold onto the teams ample assets and not deviate from the plan merely to add a short-term piece, Michael Pina of RealGM opines in his look at the team.

Southeast Notes: Winslow, Durant, Hornets

Heat swingman Justise Winslow just completed his rookie campaign and hopes to develop into a player who the franchise can build around, Ethan J. Skolnick of The Miami Herald relays. “Yeah, definitely. Growing up, that was something I always wanted,” Winslow responded when asked if he wants to be the face of the franchise. “And being part of an organization that over the past 10, 13 years has sort of been built around one guy, it’s just something to look forward to. I know there’s a lot of work to be done. I’m not sure what team it will be with, hopefully with Miami, but eventually I would want to be a franchise guy, a leader on a team and the guy that the organization kind of builds around.”

The Heat held a free agent mini-camp this week and attendees included Rodney McGruder, Quinton Upshur, Brandan Kearney, Juwan Howard Jr., Jabril Trawick, Okaro White, Xavier Gibson, Kevin Tumba, Kenny Gabriel and Norvel Pelle, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald notes.
While the notion is certainly a long-shot, Mike Bianchi of The Orlando Sentinel makes the case for why Kevin Durant should sign with the Magic if he departs Oklahoma City as a free agent this offseason. The scribe cites the lack of media pressure, the presence of GM Rob Hennigan, who Durant is familiar with from their time together with the Thunder, new coach Frank Vogel and the team’s wealth of cap space as reasons the Slim Reaper should give serious consideration to joining Orlando.
The Hornets have workouts set for Thursday with Isaiah Cousins (Oklahoma), Anthony Gill (Virginia), A.J. Hammons (Purdue), Codi Miller-McIntyre (Wake Forest), Chinanu Onuaku (Louisville) and Kyle Wiltjer (Gonzaga), the team announced.
