Kenyon Martin Sr.

Eastern Rumors: Knicks, Hamilton, Nets, Oden

The Eastern Conference's top two teams fell last night, as the Heat lost a nailbiter in Portland and the Carmelo Anthony-less Knicks dropped a low-scoring affair in Indiana. Thursday's results further compress the playoff picture in the East, where the top eight teams, from the No. 1 Heat to the No. 8 Celtics, are all separated by just 5.5 games. Here are a few Friday updates related to four of those eight Eastern contenders:

  • Asked about the Knicks' reported interest in Kenyon Martin, coach Mike Woodson told reporters, including Al Iannazzone of Newsday, "that's news to me." If Marcus Camby is forced to miss time after aggravating a foot injury Thursday night, then the Knicks could look to sign someone, says Iannazzone.
  • Richard Hamilton, who turns 35 next month, tells K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune that he doesn't expect to play past age 38. Hamilton's contract for next year is mostly non-guaranteed, and he would turn 38 during the 2015/16 season, so he'd likely have to sign at least a couple more deals to play that long.
  • Nets management has been impressed with the job done so far by coach P.J. Carlesimo, who will "almost certainly" hold the job until the end of the season, a source tells Mike Mazzeo of ESPNNewYork.com.
  • Greg Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., tells Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports Florida that he's 100% certain his client will be playing in the NBA next season. Conley didn't talk extensively about teams that could be in play, but hinted that the Heat aren't necessarily the frontrunners, and said the Trail Blazers definitely aren't an option. I'm not sure the Heat were widely viewed as the favorites — Miami was just the only specific suitor named in Brian Windhorst's report yesterday.

Kennedy On Martin, Anderson, McGrady

Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com has a new column touching on a few relevant topics from around the NBA. Here are the highlights:

  • Kennedy wonders whether the Knicks or Lakers may consider signing veteran forward Kenyon Martin as they continue to battle injuries. Martin does not currently have any NBA offers.
  • In a video interview posted by Kennedy in the column, Hornets forward Ryan Anderson tells HoopsWorld writer Steve Kyler that he's happy in New Orleans after signing a four-year, $36MM offer sheet this summer.
  • Kennedy speculates that Tracy McGrady may attempt an NBA comeback soon, as he is struggling and frustrated playing for the Qingdao Eagles of the Chinese Basketball Association.

Odds & Ends: Knicks, Cousins, Fernandez, Cavs

The Pacers and Trail Blazers head into today having each won 11 of their last 14 contests, but both teams will be in for tough matchups at home tonight, as the Knicks arrive in Indiana and the Heat play in Portland. As we look forward to what should be a fun TNT doubleheader, let's check in on a few afternoon links from around the NBA:

Odds & Ends: Martin, Knicks, Cavs, Andersen

Kenyon Martin is one of many talented NBA veterans who has so far been unable to find a home in 2012/13.  That may change soon as the Knicks are showing interest in him, but a source tells Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com that they have only discussed him internally to this point.  The Knicks haven't reached out to Martin's representative yet, but that could be around the corner.  Here's tonight's look around the Association..

  • Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert did an on-air interview during the telecast of tonight's game to discuss the current state of the club.  While 2012/13 has been difficult for Cleveland thus far, the owner vowed that better days are ahead, according to the Plain Dealer (on Twitter).  "This year has not been an easy year…Things will improve. There are better days ahead. We will get through it," said Gilbert.
  • One NBA executive told Andrew Perna of RealGM that we likely won't see significant trades go down until February.  “There hasn’t really been a lot of talk going around,” the executive said. “There is general chatter, but nothing serious. A lot of teams are trying to figure out what is going on with [the Grizzlies] and all the names that have been thrown around.
  • Nuggets coach George Karl gave Chris Andersen a strong endorsement in an interview with Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports Florida (on Twitter).  While admitting that the 34-year-old isn't what he once was, he believes that he could be a solid piece for the Heat for 15-25 minutes per night.  The forward known as Birdman auditioned for Miami earlier this week.

Knicks Interested In Kenyon Martin

Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports report that the Knicks are beginning to show interest in signing veteran power forward Kenyon Martin. Both credit sources that say the 6'9 big man is open to playing on a 10-day contract in order to showcase his value to the Knicks. The renewed interest in Martin comes from the need for more frontcourt help as Rasheed Wallace continues to deal with a foot injury. Wallace's injury status is considered to be the "critical piece" in New York's pursuit of Martin, writes Wojnarowski and Spears.

The former number one overall draft pick out of Cincinnati last played for the Clippers during the 2011-12 lockout-shortened season, averaging 5.2 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and 1.0 BPG in 40 games along with 44.1% shooting from the field in 22.4 MPG.

With New York's roster currently at 15, the team would have to find a way to open up a spot in order to bring Martin on board.

Western Notes: White, Nowitzki, Wolves, Blazers

So far, votes are virtually evenly split on whether or not the Lakers will earn a playoff spot this season in the competitive Western Conference. You can weigh in with your vote and/or comments on our afternoon poll right here. As the Lakers prepare to face the Rockets tonight in Houston, let's check in on a few Western Conference notes relating to the Rockets and a handful of other clubs….

  • Royce White appeared on Slate's Hang Up and Listen podcast, and went into detail in discussing his relationship with the Rockets and the mental health protocol he's hoping to establish. You can listen to the conversation at about the 24:15 mark of the podcast or view the complete transcript over at Slate.com.
  • Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson says he expects Dirk Nowitzki to remain with the Mavericks for the rest of his career, according to Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (via Twitter). Nowitzki recently questioned some of the Mavs' roster-building strategies, but insisted he wants to remain in Dallas and not be traded.
  • Even though Kevin Love will be out for an extended period, the Timberwolves, like every other team in the NBA, aren't currently interested in Kenyon Martin, tweets Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities.
  • Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey isn't looking to make superficial changes to his team's roster, but is ready to make a move if the right kind of deal arises, as Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld writes.
  • Terrel Harris, who was cut this weekend by the Heat, will join the Rockets' D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, tweets Fran Blinebury of NBA.com. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle clarifies (via Twitter) that Harris won't be part of Houston's 15-man roster, but the Vipers are operated by the Rockets, who want to take a look at the guard.

Western Notes: Lakers, White, Nowitzki, Wolves

Things aren't getting any easier in Lakerland, where Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, and Jordan Hill have all been sidelined with injuries. Howard suffered a torn labrum, Gasol has a concussion, and Hill is dealing with a hip issue, meaning the Lakers' frontcourt looks awfully thin in the short-term. While Robert Sacre looks forward to more playing time and we wait to see if the Lakers add another body, let's round up a few more notes out of the Western Conference….

  • The Lakers haven't reached out to free agent big man Kenyon Martin, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports.
  • Sam Smith of Bulls.com wonder if the Lakers should consider trading Howard.
  • The Rockets are prepared to chalk up 2012/13 as a lost season for Royce White and attempt to reach some sort of agreement with the rookie forward in the offseason, according to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today. Zillgitt and TNT's David Aldridge have the latest details on White, including his desire for the NBA and the Rockets to sign a document detailing his wishes for the mental health protocol that the team believes would be in violation of the CBA.
  • Despite recent comments by Dirk Nowitzki questioning the Mavericks' approach to building the roster, owner Mark Cuban tells Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com that Dallas won't be altering that approach. "If you only knew the things [Dirk] has said to me during recent seasons about our team," Cuban joked. "I'm glad I didn't listen."
  • Nowitzki stressed to reporters today, including Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News, that he never said he wanted to be traded.
  • The Timberwolves have kicked the tires on Sam Young, who was released by the Pacers this weekend, but he's unlikely to land in Minnesota, tweets Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities. Young is currently out with an ankle injury.
  • It would be a surprise if the Timberwolves don't move Derrick Williams at the trade deadline, says Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio.

Atlantic Notes: Celtics, Raptors, Knicks

Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston delves further into what today's roster moves meant for the Celtic green, noting that the $275K the team saved by waiving Kris Joseph is nearly the amount it will cost the team to sign a veteran-minimum player late in the season. He also points out that Boston must wait for Joseph and Jarvis Varnado to clear waivers before being able to offer 10-day contracts. As for the now-former Celtics, Forsberg writes that both will have the option of returning to the D-League while awaiting their next opportunity. Here's the rest of what we've heard out of the Atlantic Division tonight:

  • ESPN New York's Jared Zwerling describes how current Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga played a pivotal role in helping Knicks forward Chris Copeland earn a shot to play in the NBA.
  • With P.J. Carlesimo, Nets rookie Mirza Teletovic has another chance to make a first impression (Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports).
  • In a Q&A with readers that covered a variety of miscellaneous topics, Doug Smith of TheStar.com said that with a full roster, the Raptors aren't currently inclined to waive anyone in order to sign someone to a 10-day contract. With regards to their point guard situation, Smith thinks that Toronto should stand pat for now and seems confident that the team will eventually have discussions next summer to try and keep Jose Calderon

Heat Rumors: Harris, Big Men, Martin, Pittman

The Heat were pounded on the boards last night in a loss to the the Bulls, who outrebounded them 48-28. That came just days after Nikola Vucevic set a Magic franchise record by pulling down 29 rebounds against the Heat. No team has grabbed fewer rebounds this season than the defending champs, and that makes it easy to assume Miami will pursue a rebounder with the open roster spot they'll have when Terrel Harris clears waivers. We have more on that and other matters out of South Beach this afternoon.

  • Team president Pat Riley said through a team spokesman that Miami is not looking to add anyone at the moment, reports Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. That echoes the sentiments of coach Erik Spoelstra and the players, who believe the team can solve its rebouding woes on its own.
  • Free agent Kenyon Martin had the Heat atop his wish list in November, but the team has shown little recent interest in the veteran who's averaged 7.1 rebounds per game for his career, writes Michael Wallace of ESPN.com.
  • Part of the reason the Heat let go of Harris is so they can keep a roster spot open to add someone via trade, or make a signing after the trade deadline when players from other teams are bought out, as Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida explains (Sulia link).
  • If Harris clears waivers, the Heat could opt to bring him back via 10-day contract, just as they did with Mickell Gladness last year, Winderman points out.
  • Winderman also checks in with Heat center Dexter Pittman, who's on assignment with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the D-League, and provides updates on a handful of former Heat players.

International Notes: Martin, White, Oberto

The latest rumors about NBA players signing internationally on Wednesday evening:

  • Sports Interactive Network Philippines is reporting that agent Sheryl Reyes has begun negotiating with representatives for former NBA All-Star Kenyon Martin about possibly playing in the Philippines, although no deal is close between the sides. Martin last played in the NBA for the Clippers in 2011/12.
  • Sportando reports that the agent for troubled Rockets forward Royce White will listen to offers from several European teams, and a loan arrangement with the Rockets is possible.
  • Sportando also reports that former Spurs big man Fabricio Oberto, who retired from the NBA in 2010 due to heart problems, will apparently sign with Atenas de Cordoba, in his native Argentina.
