Melvin Frazier – Hoops Rumors https://www.hoopsrumors.com Legitimate NBA free agent and trade rumors. Thu, 07 Apr 2022 11:31:18 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Thunder Sign Melvin Frazier Jr. To Two-Way Deal https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/04/thunder-sign-melvin-frazier-jr-to-two-way-deal.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/04/thunder-sign-melvin-frazier-jr-to-two-way-deal.html#comments Wed, 06 Apr 2022 21:15:02 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=297121 The Thunder have signed Melvin Frazier Jr. to a two-way deal and waived Olivier Sarr to make room for Frazier, the team announced in a press release.

Frazier, 25, was the 35th overall pick of the 2018 draft after three years at Tulane. He played his first couple seasons with the Magic, appearing in 29 games with a modest average of 5.9 minutes per contest.

He has spent more time in the G League than the NBA over the last four years, appearing in 41 games with the Lakeland Magic from 2018-20, then suiting up for the Oklahoma City Blue in the 2021 NBAGL bubble. This season Frazier split time between the Iowa Wolves and the Blue, appearing in 50 games (30.2 MPG) and averaging 13.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 2.0 APG and 1.5 SPG.

Sarr, 23, was signed to a two-way deal back in February after spending the majority of the season with the Blue. Prior to the two-way deal, he’d signed a couple of 10-day hardship contracts with the Thunder.

In 22 games (19.1 MPG) with the Thunder this season, Sarr posted solid averages of 7.0 PPG and 4.2 RPG on .574/.448/.828 shooting. The shooting splits are particularly impressive from the 7’0″ big man.

Opting to waive Sarr is pretty surprising, because he’d played the best basketball of his young NBA career over the last five games (30.3 MPG), averaging 14.8 PPG, 7.4 RPG and 1.4 BPG on .628/.538/.929 shooting. That stretch included a 24-point (on 9-12 shooting), six-rebound, two-block performance in just 22 minutes in the team’s shocking 117-96 win over the Suns on Sunday.

The Thunder are currently carrying 20 players on the roster, including a full 15-man standard rotation, three players on injury-related hardship deals that expire when the season ends, and a pair of two-ways.

Thunder Waive Melvin Frazier, Expected To Sign Zavier Simpson https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/10/thunder-waive-melvin-frazier-expected-to-sign-zavier-simpson.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/10/thunder-waive-melvin-frazier-expected-to-sign-zavier-simpson.html#respond Thu, 14 Oct 2021 18:50:20 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=264034 After joining the Thunder on a training camp deal earlier in the week, veteran wing Melvin Frazier has been waived, the team announced today.

The No. 35 pick in the 2018 draft, Frazier played in just 29 NBA games in his first two professional seasons, with Orlando. He has spent more time in the G League over the last three years, appearing in 41 games with the Lakeland Magic from 2018-20, then suiting up for the Oklahoma City Blue in the 2021 NBAGL bubble.

Frazier played a limited role with the Blue, averaging just 6.8 PPG and 3.4 RPG in 12 games (20.8 MPG), but the fact that he received an Exhibit 10 deal this week suggests the Thunder plan on having him return to their G League affiliate for the 2021/22 season.

The Thunder now have an open roster spot and may use it to sign Zavier Simpson. Our JD Shaw (Twitter link) hears from a source that Oklahoma City is expected to sign the guard to an Exhibit 10 deal.

Like Frazier, Simpson played for the OKC Blue last season and would be in line for a bonus worth up to $50K if he returns to the G League and spends at least 60 days with the club. The former Michigan Wolverine averaged 9.8 PPG, 6.1 APG, and 4.3 RPG in 15 games (28.5 MPG) in the G League in 2021.

Melvin Frazier Joins Thunder On Training Camp Deal https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/10/melvin-frazier-joins-thunder-on-training-camp-deal.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/10/melvin-frazier-joins-thunder-on-training-camp-deal.html#respond Wed, 13 Oct 2021 02:16:48 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=263570 Free agent swingman Melvin Frazier has joined the Thunder on an Exhibit 10 training camp deal, according to Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman (via Twitter).

After being selected with the No. 35 pick in the 2018 NBA draft out of Tulane by the Magic, Frazier appeared sparingly for Orlando, logging time in just 10 games with the Magic during his rookie season in 2018/19. The 6’5″ 25-year-old played in 19 contests for Orlando during the 2019/20 season.

Frazier had a better showing with Orlando’s G League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic. He averaged 12.2 PPG and 4.7 RPG in 18 games during the 2018/19 season and 18.1 PPG and 6.6 RPG across 23 games in 2019/20.

After failing to develop in Orlando, Frazier next appeared in 12 games for the Oklahoma City Blue during the Orlando “bubble” NBAGL season in 2021, averaging 6.8 PPG and 3.4 RPG. His new deal with the Thunder suggests the plan is for him to return to the Blue in 2021/22.

Thunder Waive Melvin Frazier Jr. https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/thunder-waive-melvin-frazier-jr.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/thunder-waive-melvin-frazier-jr.html#comments Sun, 06 Dec 2020 19:55:17 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=191632 Shooting guard Melvin Frazier Jr. has been waived by the Thunder, according to the NBA’s official transactions log.

The Thunder signed Frazier earlier this week. Initially drafted by the Magic in the second round of the 2018 draft out of Tulane, Frazier played just 29 games for Orlando over the past two seasons.

Frazier got significantly more run with the Magic’s G League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic. Frazier played 41 games (all starts) for Lakeland, with a competitive slash line of 15.5 PPG/5.8 RPG/1.9 SPG/1.9 APG. The 24-year-old will now look to continue his basketball career beyond Oklahoma City.

Frazier’s brief stint on Oklahoma City’s roster signals that the club may have been looking to secure his G League rights.

Thunder Add Melvin Frazier Jr., Waive Antonius Cleveland https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/thunder-to-add-melvin-frazier-jr-waive-antonius-cleveland.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/12/thunder-to-add-melvin-frazier-jr-waive-antonius-cleveland.html#comments Fri, 04 Dec 2020 02:02:09 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=190982 The Thunder are adjusting their backcourt depth, essentially exchanging one 6’5″ shooting guard for another. The club has signed Melvin Frazier Jr. and waived Antonius Cleveland, per Keith Smith of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter).

Frazier was drafted by the Magic with the No. 35 pick out of Tulane in the 2018 NBA draft, but appeared in just 29 games across two seasons with Orlando, averaging 5.9 MPG.

In two seasons with the Magic’s G League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic, Frazier played 41 games (all starts), averaging a solid slash line of 15.5 PPG/5.8 APG/1.9 SPG/1.9 APG, while shooting 48.7% from the field. The club declined his $1.66MM player option for 2020/21 earlier in this offseason.

Oklahoma City had just added Cleveland to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract to join the club’s training camp roster. Cleveland was a two-way player for the Mavericks for the 2019/20 season, and saw limited NBA action in 11 games with Dallas.

In 36 games for the Mavericks’ G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, Cleveland averaged 14.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, and 1.6 SPG. After going undrafted out of Southeast Missouri State in 2017, Cleveland split the 2017/18 season between the Hawks and Mavericks. He spent the 2018/19 season with Golden State’s G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors.

The Thunder are among the teams that figure to turn over their back-end roster spots in the coming days and weeks with an aim toward securing players’ G League rights and/or ensuring that they receive $50K bonuses if they play in the G League.

Magic To Give Clark Qualifying Offer, Let Iwundu, Frazier Walk https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/11/magic-to-give-clark-qualifying-offer-let-iwundu-frazier-walk.html https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/11/magic-to-give-clark-qualifying-offer-let-iwundu-frazier-walk.html#comments Thu, 19 Nov 2020 21:35:17 +0000 https://www.hoopsrumors.com/?p=184286 The Magic will extend a $1.82MM qualifying offer to forward Gary Clark, Josh Robbins of The Athletic tweets.

They will not extend a $2MM qualifying offer to swingman Wesley Iwundu and they’ll also decline their $1.66MM option on guard Melvin Frazier Jr. Both players will head into unrestricted free agency, while Clark will be restricted.

Orlando signed Clark after the Rockets waived him in early January. Clark, 25, appeared in 24 games for Orlando, averaging 3.6 PPG and 2.9 RPG in 14.8 MPG.

The decision on Iwundu, a second-round pick in 2017, is somewhat surprising. He started 21 of 52 games last season, averaging 5.8 PPG and 2.5 RPG in 18.3 MPG. It signals that Orlando felt it could get a rotation upgrade elsewhere.

Orlando’s decision on Frazier didn’t raise eyebrows. A 2018 second-round pick, Frazier never cracked the rotation, appearing in just 29 games over two seasons.
