Free Agent Rumors: Flynn, Heat, Mahinmi

We're less than 14 hours away from the July moratorium coming to an end and this season's signing period beginning in earnest. As of 11:00pm central time tonight, teams can officially sign free agents, trades can be consummated, and players can sign contract extensions. In the meantime, free agents have one more day to try to reach contract agreements before clubs start finalizing the moves they've agreed to over the last week and a half. We'll track today's rumors on free agents here, with the newest updates up top:

  • Jonny Flynn has worked out for the Hawks and will visit the Bulls on Friday, tweets Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. Count the Cavs as another team interested in the point guard's services.
  • Look for the Heat to add a minimum-scale big man, such as Kwame Brown or Joel Przybilla, as they finish up their offseason spending, tweets Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
  • Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times (Twitter link) hears from NBA officials that the Bucks have some interest in Ian Mahinmi.

Bulls Sign Mike James For Rest Of Season

The Bulls have signed Mike James to a contract for the remainder of the season, the team officially announced today. The addition of James brings Chicago's roster to 14 players, so the club still has room to sign another player before the end of the season.

James, 36, started the season with the Bulls, was waived by the team in late January, and later signed a pair of 10-day deals. Chicago didn't re-sign him immediately after the second contract expired, but planned to bring him back in April.

In eight games with the Bulls this season, James has scored 5.4 points and handed out 3.1 assists in 11.4 minutes per contest.

Mike James Has Interest In Knicks

Ian Begley of ESPN New York writes that guard Mike James would welcome a chance to play for the Knicks, according to James' agent Brian Lee. New York is currently at the maximum roster limit and would have to waive a player in order to make room for Mike, which is why Lee isn't expecting a call from the team.

The Amityville product signed a nonguaranteed contract and two 10-day deals with the Bulls this season, and put up a notable 16 points and seven assists in 23 minutes before fouling out in a loss to the Nets on February 18th.

Southeast Notes: Lewis, Heat, Howard

Let's take a look around the Southeast Division as the Louisville Cardinals knocked off the NBA lottery pick-laden Florida Gators to punch their ticket to the Big Easy for the Final Four.

  • Michael Lee of The Washington Post checks in with Rashard Lewis, who is dealing with two injured knees and hasn't played since the All-Star break. He said Lewis was part of a proposed deal that would have sent him and Javale McGee to the Hornets for Chris Kaman, Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry, but the Wizards chose to make last week's three-team deal with Clippers and Nuggets instead. Lewis is making one of the highest salaries in the league at $21.1MM this season. He's guaranteed only $13.7MM next year, and while the Wizards said in December they wouldn't use the amnesty clause on him, you have to wonder whether they'll rethink that decision.
  • Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel finds it interesting the Bulls are letting point guard Mike James dangle until April when the Heat could use a veteran at his position (Twitter link).
  • While Dwight Howard's status with the Magic has become a bit clearer for the immediate future, Brian Schmitz considers what the long term holds for the Orlando big man heading into next season.

Bulls Plan To Re-Sign Mike James In April

Mike James‘ second ten-day contract with the Bulls expired on Friday and the veteran guard wasn’t present at the team’s morning shootaround.  The team’s plan for James now is to re-sign him at some point next month, tweets K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune.

Until then, the Bulls are left with two vacant roster spots and could use one to sign Rasual Butler.  James, 36, saw time in eight games for Chicago this season and averaged 5.4 PPG and 3.1 APG in 11.4 minutes per contest.

Bulls Eyeing Rasual Butler, Prioritizing Big Man

Mike James' second 10-day contract with the Bulls expires at the end of the day, which will leave Chicago with two open roster spots if the team doesn't re-sign James for the remainder of the season. With an eye on the postseason, the Bulls are considering how best to make use of those two spots.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that Chicago is a potential destination for Rasual Butler, who was waived by the Raptors today. Meanwhile, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune says (on Twitter) that landing a big man is still a priority for the Bulls.

The Bulls have been linked to Leon Powe and were also thought to have a little interest in Ronny Turiaf, but Turiaf quickly signed with the Heat upon clearing waivers. If Chicago decides to use its open roster spots, expect the club to add a shooting guard and a big, but as we heard earlier this week, the team's current players don't feel like an addition is a necessity.

Bulls Re-Sign Mike James To 10-Day Contract

The Bulls have re-signed Mike James to a second 10-day contract, reports K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune. The signing has been officially announced by the team in a press release.

With Derrick Rose's status uncertain for tonight's game due to groin soreness, James will provide backcourt depth. Though this will be James' third stint with the Bulls in 2011/12, the team won't be required to sign him for the rest of the season, since the 36-year-old had only signed one 10-day contract so far.

Despite only appearing in seven games for the Bulls this year, James has been productive in limited action, averaging 6.1 points and 3.6 assists in 12.3 minutes per game.

Winderman On Possible Heat Moves

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Ira Winderman touched on a few transaction-related topics in today's Heat mailmag. Here are the details:

  • Winderman thinks Mike James is worth considering as a backup point guard, but warns that his last stint with the Heat didn't go well, and points out that he may not get much playing time in Miami competing for minutes with Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole.
  • There is a distinct possibility that players who went overseas during the lockout, such as guard Chris Quinn, could be back in time for the playoffs.
  • Winderman does not believe the Heat will make a major trade before the deadline. Rather, he views it as more likely that they'll try to find help among the players who may be bought out in the final months of the regular season.

Bulls Notes: Thibodeau, James, Roster

The Bulls head into the All-Star break trailing the Heat by mere percentage points in the Eastern Conference standings. Let's round up the latest out of Chicago, as the team hopes for a healthier backcourt in the second half….

  • K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune asked chairman Jerry Reisendorf why the team hasn't picked up Tom Thibodeau's third-year option for 2012/13. While Reisendorf said there was nothing to announce at this point, he added, "We certainly hope and expect that Tom will be with the Bulls well beyond his current contract."
  • Johnson notes that when the Bulls were in a similar situation with coach Scott Skiles, the team waited until June to exercise his option, but also signed him to a three-year extension at that point.
  • Mike James' 10-day contract has expired, and he won't sign another one right away. Johnson says the Bulls could re-sign James in March, a decision which I expect will depend on the health of Derrick Rose, C.J. Watson and Richard Hamilton.
  • Even if the team doesn't make a move before the trade deadline, the Bulls' players believe they have a better squad than last year, says Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Bulls Sign Mike James To 10-Day Contract

With Derrick Rose's back continuing to plague him, the Bulls announced today via a team release that they've signed Mike James to a 10-day contract.

Rose's nagging injuries prompted the Bulls to sign James once already this season. The 36-year-old appeared in three games, including a nine-point, 10-assist outburst in just 16.5 minutes against the Bobcats. He was waived on January 28th.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein (Twitter links) first reported that the two sides had agreed to a 10-day contract.
