International Notes: Powell, Nicholson, Pangos, Ojeleye

Free agent guard Myles Powell and forward Andrew Nicholson are joining the Bay Area Dragons of the new East Asia Super League, according to an announcement from the league (Twitter link). The Dragons are a Hong Kong team, but are temporarily based in Manila in the Philippines due to COVID-19 restrictions in Hong Kong.

The new East Asian league is recruiting some noteworthy U.S. players with significant financial commitments. According to Adam Zagoria of NJ.com, Powell’s deal is worth seven figures. The former Seton Hall guard, who finished 2021/22 on a two-way contract with the Sixers, intends to return stateside when the EASL season ends in February.

“I’ll be back in six months, so the plan is to go over there, make some money, and then I’ll be back in February and hopefully join an NBA team before the playoffs,” Powell told Zagoria. “That’s around the time NBA call-ups start anyway.”

While Powell played in the NBA last season, Nicholson hasn’t suited up for an NBA team since 2017. He appeared in 285 total regular season contests from 2012-17 for Orlando, Washington, and Brooklyn.

Kevin Pangos‘ deal with Olimpia Milano, first reported in April, is now official, the Italian club announced today in a press release. It’s a two-year contract for Pangos, who appeared in 24 games for the Cavaliers last season before being bought out in February.
After Orazio Cauchi of BasketNews.com reported that Virtus Bologna is eyeing veteran NBA forward Semi Ojeleye as a possible target, Emiliano Carchia of Sportando tweets that the Italian club has had discussions with Ojeleye. The 27-year-old appeared in 30 total games last season for the Bucks and Clippers before being waived by L.A. in March.

COVID-19 Updates: Noel, Hornets, Pacers, Ingles, Reed, Bucks, Metu

Knicks center Nerlens Noel has cleared the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols, per New York’s PR team (Twitter link). Noel entered the protocols in late December.

The 6’11” big man has only appeared in 17 contests, starting 10, for New York so far this season. The 27-year-old out of Kentucky is averaging 3.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.5 BPG and 1.1 SPG across 23.1 MPG. Knee injuries kept Noel absent for much of the start of the 2021/22 season. He signed a lucrative three-year, $32MM contract with the Knicks during the offseason.

Hornets power forward P.J. Washington and shooting guard Scottie Lewis, signed to a two-way contract, have exited the league’s coronavirus health and safety protocols, the club’s PR team has announced (via Twitter). Charlotte adds that both players are questionable to play on Wednesday’s game against Detroit.
Pacers guards Jeremy Lamb and Malcolm Brogdon have cleared the NBA’s health and safety protocols but will not play in tonight’s game and are uncertain to suit up for tomorrow’s contest, per James Boyd of the Indianapolis Star.
Jazz forward Joe Ingles has become Utah’s first player to enter the league’s COVID-19 protocols this season, tweets Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Sixers big man Paul Reed has entered the league’s coronavirus protocols and will be unavailable to play against the Magic on Wednesday, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Pompey adds (Twitter link) that three of the Sixers’ other four players currently in COVID-19 protocols have already been ruled out for the game, with only Myles Powell seeing his status upgraded to questionable.
Bucks guards Grayson Allen and Pat Connaughton have entered the league’s COVID-19 protocols, per Eric Nehm of The Athletic (via Twitter). Nehm adds that Milwaukee forwards Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Jordan Nwora and Semi Ojeleye, all still in protocols themselves, have seen their statuses upgraded to questionable ahead of the team’s Wednesday matchup against the Raptors.
Kings big man Chimezie Metu is now in the NBA’s health and safety protocols, reports Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee.

Doc Rivers, Michael Malone Enter COVID-19 Protocols

Two more NBA head coaches have entered the health and safety protocols and won’t be on the sidelines for their respective teams in the short term.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports (via Twitter) that Sixers coach Doc Rivers has entered the protocols, while Mike Singer of The Denver Post (Twitter link) hears from a source that Nuggets coach Michael Malone has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in the protocols.

In Philadelphia, assistant Dan Burke will take over for Rivers as the 76ers’ acting head coach, according to Wojnarowski. Malone will be replaced in Denver by assistant David Adelman for the time being, says Singer.

The list of head coaches in the protocols continues to grow — Frank Vogel, Billy Donovan, Monty Williams, Chauncey Billups, and Mark Daigneault are also currently affected. Rick Carlisle and Alvin Gentry were in the protocols earlier in the month but have since resumed coaching the Pacers and Kings, respectively.

In addition to placing Rivers in the health and safety protocols today, the Sixers also had two more players enter — Myles Powell and Tyler Johnson are now in the protocols and have been ruled out for Thursday’s game vs. Brooklyn, tweets Wojnarowski.

Sixers Sign Myles Powell, Waive Grant Riller

DECEMBER 19: The Sixers have officially signed Powell to a two-way deal and waived Riller, according to Derek Bodner of The Daily Six newsletter (via Twitter).

DECEMBER 18: The Sixers will sign former Seton Hall standout Myles Powell to a two-way contract, according to Kyle Neubeck of The Philly Voice. Current two-way player Grant Riller will be waived to make room on the roster, Neubeck adds.

Powell is currently with the Westchester Knicks in the G League, where he had 15 points, five rebounds and two assists in the only game he has played this year. He also appeared in 13 games for Westchester last season.

Powell has been seeking an NBA opportunity since going undrafted in 2020. He has signed three times with the Knicks, only to be waived shortly thereafter. The last time was in mid-October so that New York could retain his G League rights and give him an Exhibit 10 bonus for returning to Westchester.

He was a prolific scorer at Seton Hall, putting up 21.0 PPG in 2020 while earning Big East Player of the Year and first-team All-American honors.

Riller, a 24-year-old point guard, has been slowed by injuries since signing with Philadelphia in August and hasn’t appeared in any games this season. He suffered a torn meniscus in early October and injured his right shoulder in a G League game last month. He played seven games for the Hornets last season.

Knicks Release Myles Powell

After signing him earlier in the week, the Knicks have waived guard Myles Powell, the team announced today (via Twitter).

Powell, a 6’2″ guard who went undrafted out of Seton Hall in 2020, averaged 17.8 PPG, 3.8 APG, and 3.4 RPG in 13 games (28.1 MPG) for the Westchester Knicks during the abridged 2020/21 season, posting an impressive shooting line of .448/.446/.818 for New York’s G League affiliate.

As Fred Katz of The Athletic confirms (via Twitter), the Knicks signed Powell to an Exhibit 10 contract this week with an eye toward having him return to Westchester for the 2021/22 season. The team already has Powell’s NBAGL returning rights, but completing an Exhibit 10 deal will allow him to receive a $50K bonus, assuming he spends at least 60 days with New York’s G League team.

The Knicks now have 19 players under contract, including 14 on guaranteed deals and one on a two-way pact.

Knicks Sign Myles Powell, Waive Tyler Hall

The Knicks have made a pair of minor roster moves, announcing in a press release that they’ve waived guard Tyler Hall and replaced him with guard Myles Powell.

Both players were members of the Westchester Knicks, New York’s G League affiliate, last season and appear likely to return to the team in 2021/22. By signing them to non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contracts, the Knicks can give Hall and Powell bonuses worth up to $50K if they spend at least 60 days in the G League.

Powell, a 6’2″ guard who went undrafted out of Seton Hall in 2020, averaged 17.8 PPG, 3.8 APG, and 3.4 RPG in 13 games (28.1 MPG) for Westchester during the abridged 2020/21 season, posting an impressive shooting line of .448/.446/.818.

Hall, 24, went undrafted out of Montana State in 2019 and has spent the first two seasons of his professional career as a rotation player for Westchester. In 53 total games at the NBAGL level, the 6’5″ guard has averaged 9.5 PPG, 3.6 RPG, and 2.0 APG on .421/.411/.742 shooting in 26.1 minutes per contest. He also played for New York’s Summer League team in August.

Knicks Waive Myles Powell

The Knicks have waived guard Myles Powell after signing him to a two-way deal on Friday, the team announced (via Twitter).

The 23-year-old was never expected to remain with the team, explains Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter link). The Knicks signed Powell to give him some extra money for his contributions to their G League affiliate. He averaged 17.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists for Westchester in 13 games in the G League bubble.

The move leaves New York with an open two-way spot. Former two-way player Jared Harper had his two-way deal converted to a 10-day contract on Friday.

Myles Powell Signs Two-Way Deal With Knicks

The Knicks have signed guard Myles Powell to a two-way contract, the team’s PR department tweets.

Powell went undrafted after a stellar college career with Seton Hall, culminating with a First Team All-American selection after the 2019/20 season. The Knicks brought him in to training camp but waived him prior to the start of the season.

He played 13 games for Westchester, the team’s G League affiliate, and averaged 17.8 PPG and 4.0 APG. He was expected to sign with Milwaukee on a two-way deal in early March but that never came to fruition.

New York had a two-way spot open after promoting Jared Harper to the 15-man roster on a 10-day contract.

Bucks To Sign Myles Powell To Two-Way Contract

The Bucks intend to sign former Seton Hall guard Myles Powell to a two-way contract, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

Powell, who went undrafted in 2020, joined the Westchester Knicks for the G League season and has played well at the Walt Disney World bubble, averaging 17.8 PPG, 3.8 APG, and 1.8 SPG with a .448/.446/.818 shooting line in 13 games (28.1 MPG).

The NBA is expected to loosen the rules for players on two-way contracts this season, removing the restrictions that limit them to 50 regular season games and make them ineligible for the playoffs. So once Powell officially signs with Milwaukee, he should be eligible to play in the rest of the team’s regular season and postseason games.

The Bucks currently don’t have a two-way slot open, so they’ll have to waive either Mamadi Diakite or Jaylen Adams to make room for Powell.

Adams has logged just 18 minutes for Milwaukee this season and Diakite has yet to make his NBA debut, but both players have impressed at the G League level — Adams put up 20.9 PPG and 5.2 APG with a .401 3PT% in 34 games for the Wisconsin Herd last season, while Diakite averaged a double-double (18.5 PPG, 10.4 RPG) with 2.1 BPG and a .580/.500/.750 shooting line in 12 games for the Lakeland Magic before being recalled today.

New York Notes: McGee, Noel, Toppin, G League, Nets’ D

The Nets were granted on Friday a disabled player exception worth approximately $5.727MM due to Spencer Dinwiddie‘s season-ending injury. With that in mind, HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan takes a look at some of the frontcourt players Brooklyn could pursue in a trade that would fit the salary slot. JaVale McGee, Nerlens Noel, Ed Davis and Bismack Biyombo are among those options for the Nets, who could use another veteran in the middle.

The Knicks had concerns about Tyrese Haliburton‘s slender build when they passed on the point guard in favor of Obi Toppin during the draft lottery, Marc Berman of the New York Post writes. Haliburton has made an immediate impact with the Kings, who selected him with the No. 12 pick. Toppin, the eighth overall selection, has played an average of 12 MPG the last four games after recovering from a calf injury.
The Knicks unveiled their G League roster for the Orlando “bubble” season, which is slated to begin next month. According to a team press release, forwards Louis King and Skal Labissiere and guards Myles Powell and James Young have been named affiliate players. Affiliate players remain free agents available for any of the 30 NBA teams to sign.
The Nets know they can’t rely on the offensive prowess of their Big Three to make the Finals, Brian Lewis of the New York Post notes. After giving up 147 points to the Cavaliers in a double-overtime loss, they must focus on defensive improvement. “We feel positive in that we can improve defensively; but it’s definitely got to be a priority,” coach Steve Nash said.
